Comment: I’ve been going to this restaurant since its opening, about 20 years ago. To me, it’s the best Japanese restaurant in the world. I make this claim after having been to some of the best restaurants in Japan. Masa is not tied down by limitations of traditional Japanese sushi restaurants in Japan, in terms of cooking style, ingredients... Though Masa keeps the finest traditions of sushi making, he’s very creative and fusion in its appetisers. All very good, but you would have to say up😵‍💫😵‍💫

Comment: We made a reservation at the counter at Masa. With a $1000/person price tag and 3 Michelin stars, we obviously came with extremely high expectations. The experience was overall quite underwhelming. The sushi was good but definitely not the best we had in NYC and definitely not worth the insane price. The service was great.

Comment: It was my first time visiting this restaurant, and I was fascinated by the impressive display and delightful taste. The highest quality ingredients and mesmerizing flavors, not to mention the top-notch service, made the experience unforgettable. I cant wait to return to New York for another visit. I ordered the shabu with foie gras and Wagyu. Omg, I still vividly recall the taste lingering under my teeth. Additionally, the tuna with caviar, the makis, and king crab, the Udon, the duck tacos, the beef carpaccio with truffle and the miso code. The dessert is another story.

Comment: This review is for the omakase at sushi masa where there are no pictures allowed. You get what you pay for here. There is a TON of food, so prepare for that 😂. I had to say I was full long before the serving was over. We ate at the chef bar and really enjoyed eating and watching our food be prepared.

Comment: Bar Masa offers a simple yet transcendent lunch experience. It is pricey but the precision of each nigiri is evident with traditional Japanese techniques. Ingredients are of the highest quality — including the best rice — ensuring freshness in every bite. The sushi is melt-in-your-mouth textures with robust flavors. Though on the pricier side, the culinary journey is worth every penny. Highly recommended for those seeking a memorable and refined dining affair for lunch or at dinner.

Comment: This is not a review of Bar Masa. It’s a review of Masa. No photos are allowed of Masa dishes. My background is Tokyo and Kyoto 1-3 star Mich. I have read many of the reviews of Masa. Most are sadly wrong. I’ll explain.Masa is expensive. All the 3 stars in Tokyo and Kyoto are about the same price. Many of the reviews for Masa are about quality vs price. Forget that. It’s not about money at this level.I sat at the $1000/ guest sushi bar seating tonight. I saw the perfect cadence of the back chefs (the guys grilling) and the front chef (the guy doing sushi and talking). It was 3 star level. I had lots of interaction with the Somme, the waitstaff, and the rest of the crew. All were completely on top of it. A grain of rice gone astray? Someone comes and grabs it. An empty glass? Someone comes and fills it. Immediately.Believe me, I would be more than happy to rip this place to shreds, but no. It’s the real deal.It fully deserves its 3 star rating. If money is an issue for you, forget it. It’s super expensive. There’s plenty of other omakase places in NYC. But if you’ve had other 3 star places in Japan and money is not an issue, come here.

Comment: To taste what may be the continent’s best sushi, experience the contemplative and very exclusive ceremony of Chef Masa Takayama’s omakase. Everything here carries a certain weight, from the heavy wooden door to the bill.Attention to detail is unsurpassed and at times it may seem like a bit much, but a reverential spirit is part of your meal here. Service displays the same smooth grace, with servers at the ready.Awaken the palate with a sweet chunk of hairy crab meat dressed in citrusy yuzu beneath creamy tomalley. This may be followed by the chef’s signature glass coupe of minced toro and a very fine—and generous—pile of Osetra caviar. Maine uni is wondrous, served in its shell with caramelized custard and paper-thin white truffle.

Comment: Have always wanted to try Bar Masa, I had lunch there for the first time recently. The food, service, and atmosphere were all great. Yes, the sushi is very expensive, but it was worthwhile to try at least once. Bar Masa is definitely more of a special occasion type experience. A reservation in the main dining room, which is next door, is now around $1000 per person. No thanks on that!

Comment: Bar Masa offers a great space to enjoy a really good meal. I had the Sushi Assortment which featured the chefs choice of various cuts. I also enjoyed a salad and a shrimp tempura roll. The server was very attentive to my needs, even though she was very busy with a neighboring table who had trouble ordering, though no fault of the server or establishment. At one point my server was kind enough to send another server to my table to assist since she was caught up at that table for a longer period of time.Over all, Bar Masa is a great place to visit. The location allows you to eat and then shop all without ever leaving and e steering the cold!

Comment: My wife and I dined here on 6/17/2022. The staff was very friendly and approachable when we had questions about the wine vs sake pairing. The food was excellent. Not as much sushi/sashimi as I would have thought (personal opinion), but had a lot of other seafood/food.For the best overall experience, Id suggest sitting at the counter, in front of the Chefs. It costs more but if you want a more elevated experience, that would be the pinnacle.

Comment: The chef is really nice and made good sushi! The Uni is the best Uni in my life! I like the sweet shrimp too. However, I think the water (and sparkling water) is a total scam! (Green tea too) They continuously pour water to you non-stop. Literally will not wait to let you ask for water.First, they didn’t even tell us water needs money, which is not unacceptable. The most stupid part: In the end, we find out that we are charged 4 bottles of water(and sparkling water) $10/each! I am kinda angry! Did you ask for our permission before opening a new bottle? I think it is a total scam! We didn’t know this until we get the final bill. Totally unexpected!

Comment: Great experience with amazing variety of sushi. Number of portions were more than other omakese. We liked the intimate experience as we were sitting on the counter and had an amazing chef (Gino) serving us. The only reason I gave 4 (instead of 5) starts, were the crowdedness of chefs behind thr counter and the level of noise.

Comment: Yes, this place deserves all three Michelin stars and yes its worth making that reservation. No, I havent found another omakase that is on par with this yet. Frankly, Ive never had a meal in my life that comes close to this.I wish I was a seasoned sushi reviewer who could explain in detail the intricacies of each piece. Im not up to that task so suffice it to say that I felt forced to close my eyes to truly appreciate the pure euphoria brought on by the pieces here.I was so honored to be served by Chef Masa Takayama himself and to be given the opportunity to take a photo with him. Comment: High end authentic Japanese restaurant. It is a fixed price menu and it is not cheap probably one of the most expensive restaurants in New York. But the quality is high. Some of the best sushis that you may find in New York. Some of the dishes however were not to my like. It could be a personal taste. Decor and ambience is authentic and pleasant. Service was excellent. They have no photographic policy which I find to be unrealistic and meaningless.

Comment: Sadly, I couldn’t take a picture since it’s not allowed. The food was good. But I’d rather buy a flight ticket to japan & eat sushi instead of paying here. Of course the food is good.. but I don’t think it’s that good for the price . In terms of service … it was average service . I expected more since it’s the most expensive restaurant in nyc. Since I’m in usa, i’m not supposed to compare to restaurants in japan. But i expected service like the way fancy restaurants treat customers in japan due to the price . But no . It was average service like anywhere in fine dining restaurants in USA.

Comment: Unfortunately, you cannot take pictures when your enter the restaurant, but that is also its charm. The experience of getting served one piece of sushi at a time is magical. Watching searing of a piece of tuna with a hot poker is something that is so unique and unusual itll make you forget about the dinners price tag. The taste is nice, no better than you will probably find in your local sushi restaurant, but the visual of the process, army like coordination of orders being shouted from Chef to his support staff is not like anything youll ever see anywhere else.

Comment: Youre not allowed to take photos except when invited to. We were allowed a few for my husbands birthday, and I also snapped one of the parting gifts (two menus and the paper one of our meals was prepared on) once back outside. The restaurant entry is hidden behind a banner hanging at its front. I thought it was simply decorative marketing until my husband ducked behind it and waved me over. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and polite. To quote a server I spoke with, Chef Masa is perfect; therefore, he expects nothing less. And the dinner really lives up to that. I didnt dislike anything we ate, and surprisingly, we were stuffed by the end of our 2 hours there. I say surprisingly because each item you eat is what I call a petite serving. Basically, everything fits in your mouth in one bite, and youre done. No redos or seconds. So you must savor the flavors. Every plate is timed so you fall into a rhythm set by the chef and his staff. You even receive specific instructions on not using your tiny serving of soy sauce until youre told you may, and thats important because every detectable bite already has everything you need built into its creation. Then theres the dinnerware! Its so pretty and unique. Every piece is specially designed by Chef Masa to complement his sushi creations and then manufactured for the restaurant. We didnt sit at the sushi bar where Chef Masa and his staff were most active, but we did have the best view of their process as our table was diagonal to the right of the bar (as you look at it from the front) so we could see every roll made, every bit of sashimi sliced, etc.Dining at Masa is an experience, and although Im not rich enough yet to go on a regular basis (our dinner, additional appetizer, and 4 alcoholic beverages were almost $2k), it was worth it.

Comment: What we have is an interesting conundrum where there is spectacular artistry and tastes, but recommending it is extremely difficult as it appeals to a minute demographic. To begin, MASA is somewhat of an American mecca for Japanese gourmets. But I have to emphasize that it is a place for the gourmets among gourmets. It will simply go over the heads among foodies who are just touring Michelin stars or want to throw out names. So how is it different? Lets start with the crab and uni aioli. Its served in an upside down in the crab shell. Most foodies should know that the brain of the crab is high in fat and chock full of umami. MASA opted out of the brain (though maybe it was used in the base of the dish) and prepared the uni as an aioli to substitute, if not improve upon the standard method of eating crab head. Then theres kabocha, which is central in many Japanese comfort meals. What I thought was pumpkin was actually toasted papaya with uni custard. Again, re-introducing core dishes with a twist. Think about it, uni custard and toasted papaya? Where else but MASA?Of course, during the nigiri course, you are served masses of uni again, and maybe now, youre thinking, Oh he just stuffs you with Hokkaido uni as an easy way to bump up the price. Wrong, absolutely wrong. Whats he done is prepare uni in multiple ways that continue to give you the strongest umami without boring your taste buds.Honorable mention is the caviar and toro tartare. Its so simple, but the Osetra they chose wasnt nearly as salty as it normally is and perfectly salted the toro. Literally an adults savory parfait. Some small feedback:1. The pacing was about 15 - 20 seconds too fast. It wouldve been perfect had I been a patron who did not order alcohol. I was easily rushed through the omakase portion and outpaced even the couple next to me that were seated and started eating 5 minutes prior to me.2. During the tiger shrimp nigiri, the towel they use for wiping the board landed on the shrimp and dragged against it. This towel has been wiping the vinegar rice off plates and the board all meal.Overall, small bumps in an otherwise perfect meal. Definitely someplace Id visit again, though Id pick my guests carefully.

Comment: Amazing overall experience! My wife and I have tried many of the 3 Michelin star restaurants in the U.S. (4 out of 5 in NYC, Alinea, French Laundry, Meadowood) and I can easily say this is the best service I have ever experienced. Service staff would literally stand behind you waiting to attend to your every need, it was truly remarkable and precise, just like the food. I wouldnt outright say this was my top in terms of food, but certainly in the top 3-5 best food weve ever had. I thought it would be all sashimi/sushi, but in addition there were 6 appetizer courses that were really creative and delicious and the wine/sake pairing (although expensive) were perfect complements. If youre worried about the price for what you get, then you probably shouldnt be going - thats just to say that maybe you could find similar quality fish in other sushi houses, but none of them would touch this overall once in a lifetime experience when you put it all together.

Comment: Made a special trip just to eat at Masa. It was certainly expensive, but justified. It’s not a large restaurant. It’s tranquil and quiet. Staff are professional, courteous, and charmingly welcoming. No menu is presented until the end. One of our party has a dislike of truffles and this was accommodated with ease with some rather fabulous substitutions throughout the meal.We started with stone crab with a uni sauce. This was followed by various appetizers, including toro tartare with caviar. Next came course upon course of sushi. Each bite is exquisite and perfect. 25 odd courses later, we finished with dessert, which was simply mango slices and a cup of buckwheat tea. It’s difficult to explain why this justifies the hefty price tag. There are no garnishes. The table is unfinished wood. Cutlery is simple, and the restaurant is serenely hushed. Each bite is made as perfect as humanly possible with taste, temperature, and texture expertly refined and crafted.Would I go back? Maybe. I’ve experienced the magic, and it was close to divine. I’m not eating sushi anywhere else for a bit.

Comment: If I could leave more that 5* I would! Where do I begin? We had lunch at Masa on a Saturday afternoon (dinner was sold out) we have a tradition of going to Michelin restaurants whenever we can and Masa has been on our list-!The entry is clean and beautiful- we were promptly greeted and explained phones needed to be silenced… ohhh I wish I could’ve taken pictures but I understand why. The restaurant is tasteful, minimalist in decor and works to help really showcase the food.We added the Sake pairing to our tasting menu which was an undescribable addition!!! Wow!! The gentleman that explained everything was so incredibly professional, friendly and knowledgeable- he really added to this amazing experience! There was so much that goes into this menu- we also added the Wagyu addition- which we ordered 2 but easily could’ve shared 1.Every detail in service was top notch and we are looking forward to going back for a dinner! On the exit we were presented with one of the bottles from the sake pairing we had and it was the icing on the cake-Yes, Masa is expensive but it was worth every penny. And we are looking forward to going back when we are in nyc again.

Comment: Came here with my boyfriend for our (almost) two year anni. The service was great and all the staff were so professional. Setting was quiet and beautiful (no photos allowed). The food was sooo amazing. As someone who doesn’t eat a lot of seafood, I came to like all of the courses on the menu and they all tasted so fresh. Chef Masa was very nice and you can tell that he’s very skilled, professional and passionate about his work. Plating was great too (and all the plates were so beautiful). Definitely the best dining experience I’ve had so far and will visit again in the near future.

Comment: The legend is true, Masa is the BEST sushi in the world!Having been to Jiro in Tokyo and many of his disciples around the world we can say that Masa is the best…by far!The very first piece of toro sushi and you’ll know, this is special! Nothing else like it! From the perfect sushi rice to the slightly pungent wasabi to the toro’s texture and the overall temperature, perfection!Sushi lovers have to make this trip to Masa. Best in the world! They don’t allow any photography so the seal is all I can post.

Comment: The obvious downside of finishing the most exquisite sushi youve ever had: Now, how can I be satisfied with any other sushi for at least the next year.. or two. Maybe three. Also, was not expecting Masa to be located inside a shopping mall.Covid rules have restricted seating at the bar, obviously changing the normal interactions between the chef and the guests. And Masa was never a large restaurant, so seating is now extremely limited.Chef Masayoshi Takayama does not allow photos of his amazing, delicious food, to show the prix fixe omakase of about 25 small plates, each meticulously prepared.A couple of the pieces were fired to bring out more flavor, but not with a common torch - instead, a square iron wand, heated in the wood coal grill is used. Something different.I found the food, service, and decor incredible. And although seated at a table between the plastic Covid screens, I was directly in front of the chef. It is extremely rare to watch a sushi chef at the top of his form, working with impeccable tools and perfect ingredients. Now I have to start saving up my pennies to return to this amazing experience as soon as possible.2020 10 15. Comment: I always love this place. Most reviews will do a better job at explaining how amazing the food is. One thing I really like about this place is they make your very expensive dinner almost seem like a deal/good value. They treat you the way you expect to be treated when spending 2K on dinner. For me, its just perfect on so many levels.

Comment: The best Japanese food I’ve ever tasted! First of all, their service was top notch and they didn’t have any annoying rules at all when we went. The food was soooooooo good, I’ve been to all the top restaurants in nyc, I thought Per Se was my favorite for a long time until I came to Masa. You won’t believe how good the food is until you have it, I was hesitant about the price at first but it was totally worth it, in fact we went to a really good Japanese place the next day and the food tasted so blend to me after I went to mass lol. I don’t think I can ever have regular Japanese food anymore after masa because they just aren’t good.

Comment: When I was here, Chef Masayoshi Takayama was doing a small Omakase of the most simple and at the same time best nigiri youll ever taste. Ill understand that Masa now has three Michelin stars so I doubt that he are doing these small tasting services at the bar himself anymore, but even this simple dish deserved three Michelin stars. Every simple ingredient could be tasted and at the same time it all came together in one perfect harmony. Pure perfection.

Comment: This is the best sushi experience in the world! So far. Having attended Jiro and Jiro Roppongi (Jiro’s son) sushi temples in Tokyo, Japan, I can say that Masa offers the same sushi quality in a much more relaxed atmosphere. The Japan experience is very stressful, as you are rushed and almost looked down upon, specially for a first timer. I was expecting the same at Masa, but was pleasantly surprised. Everyone is very friendly, the conversation with the sushi master is fluid, as well as with the staff and sommelier. The pace is fast, but not rushed. The explanation of each piece is thorough. My favorite was the minced toro with caviar. Wow!

Everything about the food was delicious really an eating experience a journey so to speak. Service was top-notch informative, friendly without being intrusive. We love Japanese food and have eaten it all over the world. I was very pleased that we made the decision to come here. Masa gives you an experience, In my opinion you’re not just eating food you are living it. The ingredients are top-notch and some of them very expensive for a restaurant to purchase which is probably why it is so expensive to eat here.

Comment: Fascinating! 10/5 stars. The food was absolutely incredible. The customer service was outstanding. This has been the best experience of 2019 for me. I was almost certain Sean Penn was at one of the tables? I didnt want to ruin anyones moment so I just kept it to myself (never will get a chance for autograph again). I suggested to the manager 750.00 - 850.00 per person would still pack the restaurant. She just winked at me and smiled (super cute lady). After my extraordinary, out of body, culinary experience; my pallet has never been the same (in a phenomenal way). You will see me dining with Masa even when the prices reach 1,500.00 - 2,000.00 per person. Money is only paper. The food at this establishment is an absolute work of art! This would have been Picassos or Divincis heaven on Earth. I am sure they would have donated one of their pieces to the restaurant? Thank you for giving my pallet such a sacred blessing. Anyone who has read this, I encourage you to walk through the doors of Masa and enjoy yourself. You deserve it! I never thought I would experience what I have in this lifetime. God bless and thank you a million times over........

I made my reservation a few weeks ahead on the phone a reservation (the staff had a annoyed/arrogant tone on the phone when I asked a question)* On site staff was very attentive and friendly, very humble!* Simple but thoughtful decor with elegant Chinese Quince center piece* Extensive list of fine wine(I dont know wine but those prices makes me think they know what theyre doing :)* Staff let us know that food pictures are off limit, but pictures of environments and people are A ok!* Omakase by the sushi bar for the best intimate dining experience (strongly recommended)* Fuji San was our sushi master and made us felt very comfortable and made us whole with his skills and wits* Shared Omi beef plate with black truffle (YMMV we thought the beef was more lean than other top beef but it was very tender and beefy without a lot of fat, very interesting experience)* Dessert served for our special occasion(lady M green tea cake thats much more fluffy than you can buy in store). But the real dessert was taking group photo with Masa San and Fuji San (Wow! what a way to remember our experience by.)The verdict: one in a life time experience for 🍣 lovers. Price might be high, but well worth experience. We would return once we save up enough dough :)

Comment: The best sushi and experience. Its worth every penny and I had the most wonderful time dining here. The decor is simple and elegant. We were lucky to sit at the bar. I kept feeling the wood, it was so soft. Lol. The food presentation was beautiful and tasted even better. Getting to watch Chef Masa make precision cuts to the fish and his sushi creations was like watching a performance and seeing the art. The flavors of the fish is so fresh. The service is also the best weve experienced. The presentation of placing the dishes in front of us at the same time (for the dishes not being made directly by the Chef). The sushi he makes gets placed in front of us one at a time. Constantly making sure our drinks are filled and never empty. Any little drop onto the bar gets cleaned up immediately. The use of phones and photographs are not permitted during dining. Only at the end a photo is allowed to be taken with Chef Masa. One of the dishes was made on some sort of paper which they treated and he autographed. Definitely going to frame it... This place is a gem and a once in a lifetime experience. I would love to come back! The price is very steep but so very worth it. The price also includes tax and tip, but not alcoholic beverages, unsure about teas and whatnot. I highly recommend Masa, so save up!

Comment: We were quite fortunate to get a seat at the counter... And what a counter it is. A single piece of Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) sanded down to a smoothness second only to a babys bottom. It was also the first time I had Fugu. Didnt really care too much for it ... Was hoping for some mild neurotoxicity but the reaction was not immediate... Most of the Numbness tingling and in my case expressive aphasia manifested after I was handed the bill.We also opted for the Wagyu with Truffles which was an additional to the standard Omakase. It made me happy to be alive. The sushi service itself was spectacular. No surprise there. My wife prefers it over Nakazawa. I prefer the latter.

Comment: If money is no object then I highly recommend this restaurant. Sit in at the sushi bar and having Masa Takayamas Omasake is something else. Everything was terrific. However, this place isnt really as good as the price dictates. Starting at $595 plus the $140 for the Kobe dish plus $300+ for wine we are taking about $1,800+ for a table for 2. You could go to Per Se and Eleven Madison Park for that price. Or any other combination of 2 NYCs 3 Michelin starred restaurants. So is it twice as good as these others. No chance. But I go back to my original statement. If money is not in the consideration then I fully recommend dinning here at the bar in front of Masa himself.

Comment: This place is awesome, but very expensive. I still would recommend it if your willing to lay down that kind of cash. The spot is small, i counted 26 seats but the experience is exquisite. This is Japanese fine dining at its best. There are no menus at this restaurant and the server explained to me that its not a restaurant its a dining empiricism. (and yes i had to look that one up, thank you Google). The whole experience took about 3 hours. In my opinion the best seats in this restaurant are at the bar so you can get the full omakase experience. Definitely try this place out, you wont regret it. (Unless of course rent is due the next day, LOL)

Comment: Well deserving of its three Michelin stars, youll be hard-pressed to find any sushi that can top Masas. While its extremely expensive, youre paying for an unforgettable culinary journey.

Comment: Its tough to get over the prices at Masa, but Ill admit the food is tasty. Everyone who works there is polite and professional, and the food comes out pretty fast. If you can spend the cash, I recommend trying this place for high-end Japanese.

Comment: A real sushi bar with exceptional food quality.I love Japanese food and I had the chance to spend some time over there and I can tell you that Bar Masa is the closest to the quality over there!A very good tip: lunch menus with Bento Box for as low as $25!Great staff, great atmosphere and very good sake menu.

Comment: Delicious sushi is here. But the cooked dishes are great too. The location is convenient for midtown. Service is outstanding! But some aspects are overpriced.

Comment: While everything was excellent, I still believe this place is slightly overpriced. But the food, being asian fusion, was definitely very exotic in the best possible way. Came for a date and solved my relationship problems.

Comment: Excellent foods, yet definitely overpriced. But, you are of course paying for the status besides the air shipping fees for the best sushi directly came from Tokyo tsukiji market. The service is great, yet one thing I noticed was the main chef seems too nervous about their services that the way how he was speaking to his staff also made us nervous as opposed to creating a relaxing environment to enjoy the meals. On top of the prefix price, of course, you have to pay for the drinks which are equally overpriced. I would not go back there unless you are treated by someone who has enough money to spend on anything.

Comment: Took my son there for his graduation. Great original sushi but Id rather go across the hall to Per Se. I really dont think the price justifies the food. Meant more for business dinners where the bill can be deducted from business expenses.

Comment: Superb variety of dishes served from the same kitchen as Masa Restaurant next door, with flexible and well-informed service. Hard to pick a favorite, but if you can swing the $$, try the truffle ball; its just rice rolled around in truffle shavings, but oh my!

Comment: Masa is amazing food and service - a true experience. Bar Masa next door is *better* value (still crazy expensive) but easy to get into and a relaxed environment.
