Comment: Their fried chicken karaage was so juicy, tender, and perfectly fried! We enjoyed both the original and hot honey nanban flavors. The latter doesn’t really taste like hot honey but rather has a Mayo drizzle, furikake, and jalapeños, which was still delicious. We also ordered their ramen and chicken sando (it tastes just like their hot honey nanban karaage with bread and a few pickled radishes), which were both good as well.

Comment: This review is for their location in Market 57.We were exploring Market 57 and caught a glimpse of the assembly of a monstrous sandwich. Upon closer inspection, the chef was making the Hot Honey Nanban Chicken Sando and we wanted to try it out. It cost $18. I think given the size and the location, the price is fair. They were kind enough to cut it in half for me and my companion. The sandwich was quite large. It had the fried chicken, the Nanban sauce, cabbage, and slices of pickled daikon. The chicken was super juicy and soft - so delicious! We were just slightly disappointed by the breading of the chicken - we felt it couldve covered the chicken more (some spots had no breading) and been a bit crispier.Given that the chicken is greasy (obviously since its fried) and the sauce seems to be mayo based, the sandwich did get a bit heavy after a while - 2 of us split the sandwich.I would recommend this place for those that like fried chicken sandwiches but not sure I would visit again myself. But still so delicious! Ill never forget how juicy the chicken was.

Comment: The food is delicious. Price is fair.Recommend you find a nice place to sit and enjoy a delicious meal. The chicken is very crunchy and the different accompanying sauces complement your meal to create a true delight for your palate.Constructive feedback: My order took a little longer because they didn’t have all the ingredients available. They had to go look for some but it was shortly out after that.We will come back and recommend.

Comment: Some delicious food. We enjoyed seasonal menu. I didnt like they serve cold sake in a used jar. I found it offensive to drink beautiful sake out of used jar and also not right for those sake brewery who went pain staking labor to make this. I am probably too Japanese on this. :(

Comment: We came with a reservation for lunch at 12pm on a Sunday and opted to sit outdoors to enjoy the sun. The outdoor seating is a bit funky due to the uneven streets so you’d be dealing with tilting chairs and table throughout the meal, but it didn’t deter us from trying it. The food was delicious. I enjoyed my Dan Dan noodles with their chili oil and onsen poached egg. The broth and ground meat was tasty, which went well with the bland noodles. The noodles were the chewy, soft texture I enjoy, so I loved it. I tried my friend’s curry shashuka and it was basically Japanese curry with fried chewy rice to go with. Solid spot, would return to try other things. Service was also friendly and quick.

Comment: I’ve loved in-person dining at Bessou but the at-home Lunar New Year meal kit my family and I enjoyed yesterday was sublime. Comment: I have visited Bessou multiple times and each time they WIN! During brunch their Banana Hotcakes and the Salmon Japanese breakfast are our FAVORITES - very savory, healthy portions meant to be shared and the hotcakes are like a great dessert. During dinner our go to are the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna/Salmon, Chicken Karaage, Deviled Eggs, the Blistered Greens and Shishitos are a great vegan option. It is not your traditional Japanese restaurant (NO California rolls) - more like Japanese comfort food.

Comment: Overall the staff were friendly and the food was very on point. Highly recommend the mushrooms and the softshell crab small plates. Also the Clam Udon was really great with the clams and broth being fresh and clean. The Karaage was interesting since it tasted like an apple pie fritter on the outside (with the sauce) and chicken in the inside. It was interesting with a lean of tasting good.Atmosphere was a cozy Japanese minimal design with an open kitchen. Only critique I have is when we were ordering a variety of dishes (6 dishes), the staff didn’t think to take our serving plates and chopsticks that we continuously used until we asked for a new one.

Comment: I love a restaurant with a good concept, and Bessou certainly fits the bill with modern take on everyday Japanese comfort food. The restaurant itself has a very cool old meets new vibe.BUT the execution was a little underwhelming. We shared a few plates for brunch:- Fried chicken karaage: This was good, but not the most amazing version of Japanese fried chicken Ive had. The pieces are pretty chunky.- Mushroom crispy rice: This wasnt usually on the brunch menu, but crispy rice is apparently one of their more popular dishes (they have salmon and tuna crispy rice on their dinner menu). I dont know what I was expecting but it turned out to be just a rice ball thats grilled (like a yaki onigiri). It was yummy as far as rice balls go but again nothing terribly special.- Banana hotcakes foster: Whoa, this was pure decadence. It was described on the menu as Japanese hotcakes but instead we got a whopping stack of American-style pancakes lavished with black sugar syrup and a giant dollop of salted miso caramel ice cream. I am not complaining. This was mind-numbingly satisfying, but it just wasnt quite what I was expecting. It was also a little TOO big and too decadent. I dont see how one person couldve had this for brunch when the two of us struggled to get even halfway through it.All in all, the food fell somewhat short of expectations. They did, however, mistakenly make us two orders of the fried chicken and gave us both when they could have easily just kept the other order in the kitchen (we wouldnt have known). That was very generous!Food: 3 starsService: 5 stars

Comment: This is a perfect (and very underrated) restaurant. I have come here on a date, with a bunch of friends and when my parents were in town and we brought our infant. So for whatever type of meal youre looking to have with whatever size group, its going to satisfy and deliver. They have been accommodating and welcoming every single time. Beyond the staff being cool knowledgeable and the service being wonderful; the food is exciting, flavorful and gorgeous. I was recently there for dinner and the open street allows for a perfect sidewalk dining experience. There are zero misses on the menu so whatever you order youre ordering the right thing. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. 10/10 every time.

Comment: I cannot truly describe the excellence of the food in this restaurant. Well there are some dont orders on the menu, most Japanese food lovers can find dishes that they find truly fantastic. The service here is very fast, and and the restaurant looks equally beautiful. However, while I said most people can find at least two dishes that they like, the menu isnt very wide. I would not recommend taking children here unless they have very refined palates.

Comment: We finally got a table last week to visit Bessou again for their weekend brunch and the food was much better than the dinner menu in our opinions. We tried their Banana Hot Cakes, Chicken Karaage, Japanese Curry Shakshuka and Wagyu Steak with fried eggs & a side of fries to share with a group of four. Everything was delicious especially the hot cake, which is puffy, soft and perfect with the homemade miso ice cream. The only complaint is the portion of ice cream was super small and was off-balanced with the huge hot cake.

Comment: The dishes came out a bit slow, but they are absolutely delicious and thoughtful. The pork belly chashuu platter came with nori, lettuce, rice, pickled veggies and shiso verde, which I can either DIY a Korean style lettuce wrap or a Japanese temaki. The whole idea of this dish made the meal more fun and interactive:) The pork belly is thick, tender but not greasy. It’s also not as sweet as the Cantonese chashuu. The pickled veggies include white radish and burdocks, balanced very well with the pork fat. The Brussels sprouts was a great starter, crispy and flavorful.

Comment: Because the foods and the vibe were really good when I visit here last year, so I took my friends there again, no more long waiting like the last time. The food still looks pretty good, but the taste is kinda disappointing. The rice in the fried rice ball was overcooked, which makes the rice ball too hard to eat together with the tuna. I would say 5 stars for Instagram, but 3 stars for the taste.

The food we got was also really good. My wife and I ordered the nori fries, chicken nanban, and tonkatsu. Everything was really good. The nori fries were basically just french fries with some furikake type stuff on them but they were really good. Chicken Nanban was also really good. The tonkatsu was okay, not great though. I think I am just use to more fatty cuts of meat but if you prefer something a bit leaner this would be a good fit. Portions were also quite generous, my wife and I couldnt finish everything. All in all a solid spot. Will definitely come again to try their dinner menu

Comment: Loved a dinner in such an intimate setting. When you think Japanese cuisine, you think sushi, so it was hard for me to think of other things to order when I realized they don’t have traditional rolls, but this pushed me outside of a usual boundary. We ordered the house made pickles three ways and unanimously did not like one of the preparations (it tasted like a campfire), but again, it was fine because we were expanding our palates. We also ordered the shishito peppers, a chicken dish with potatoes, and one kind of fried rice. I recommend ordering various items and sharing amongst the table. Portions are pretty small, but the three of us were full from sharing four items from various menu subheadings.

Comment: This place has a great atmosphere. I went here for Saturday brunch. The bananas foster pancakes were amazing, and more than enough to share between 3 people. (Our waiter warned us about the large portion and we ordered accordingly.)

Comment: Make Bessou your go-to spot in NoHo, and you will always be well fed (and impress whoever you’re with). Particularly great for a romantic date night or small group dinner.Everything on the menu surprises and delights. I recommend the salmon handroll platter, miso roasted brook trout, and the smashed potatoes. Sake list is first rate.

Comment: Fantastic overall, would recommend the japanese set breakfast. However, I would warn that the hotcakes are closer to cakes than pancakes. Very dense, not fluffy. Not really what I was expecting nor what I like. Even splitting it as an appetizer between 3 people, we werent able to finish it because of how dense it was.

Comment: Their Banana Hotcakes were HUGE, bigger than my hand. They couldve been less muffin-like in the middle but the edges were absolutely delicious. I recommend it but theyre big enough for 4 people to share. We also got their Japanese Curry Shakshuka, and we loved it. I wouldnt get it with tonkatsu, though; the pork cutlets were tough and too chewy. I love the ambiance at this place. Its intimate and cozy with beautiful decor. The noise level is ~60 dB, much like a chatty coffee bar. I want to go back and try their other dishes.

Comment: This is a very special little restaurant. One of my closest friends and I have made it our regular spot. We visit multiple times a year. We have gotten to know the owner and the staff who are all lovely and dedicated to getting the details right. We love the whole menu, but we must get the fried chicken every time. We always over order and we never have any food left to take home: speaks for itself.

Comment: The pancake is amazing. If you’re familiar with Filipino Bibingka, this feels like a not-too-distant cousin. Maybe they can do a version of this dish as an homage. The portions are nice, the food is creative and the price point is appropriate. It’s a small restaurant and the seats don’t invite you to linger but the staff is kind, attentive and didn’t rush us.

Comment: The dan dan noodle dish was FIRE. So so good. The udon noodles were buttery smooth and almost melted in your mouth?? Idk how to describe it... the pork belly was tender and the ground pork was flavorful. I loved that the broth was creamy too. The only thing is that the dish was a bit too salty for my taste, but otherwise it was perfect!!

Comment: Enjoyed the food and the cozy atmosphere very much! My favourite was the udon. I realise that I ordered too many fried dishes. I would’ve preferred the onigiri to be grilled rather than fried. The fried chicken is alright. The best dish I had was the charred shishito peppers and string beans. The udon was also very good. I look forward to coming back and trying the other dishes.

Comment: So this is 4.5 stars not 4 primarily because the gluten-free and vegetarian options are limited and it is a bit overpriced, but the quality and service is great otherwise. Coconut ice cream is delicious. Green team ice cream delicious. Salted caramel miso flavored ice cream was meh. The mochi is sublime—such fantastic texture. The hot cakes are HUGE. Despite not having much in gluten-free options, the chef works with customers to create a special meal to suit their needs.

I loved they are not trying to be as authentic as they could be but challenging to create their own taste for New Yorkers. I would come back to try other menus and recommend here to my Japanese friends as well! The fried rice ball was amazing. The fried chicken could be juicier.

Comment: We found this place by accident, when my husband and I were out for date night, and the place I had selected didnt work out. It was the first warm day in quite a while, so lots of people were out, and we were looking hard for a place that wasnt packed. Bessou was an awesome surprise. The menu is pretty unconventional for American tastes, so perhaps thats why it was quieter. (The place was by no means dead; just more of an enthusiastic niche crowd.) We enjoyed a variety of dishes that we shared, and the food I found to be a rare sensory experience. This is certainly not the place you plonk down and fill up while youre preoccupied with socializing and, um, dont notice or care what youre eating. It was really a great meal - and Im selective about restaurants - so Ill certainly be back.

Comment: I absolutely loved everything I had, but you have to be aware they dont have all the typical sushi/sashimi fare of a Japanese place. On the flip side, they will also have Japanese comfort food that you wont find anywhere else. My first time going there, I went with 3 friends so we had the collective bandwidth (or bellywidth!) to try a lot of dishes -- I would highly recommend this eating strategy because the dishes are so unique. The pickled veggies and brussel sprouts were delish, but the shiso cigars were my favorite appetizer. Also I loved all the noodle dishes I had. The udon is made into chewy perfection. Im getting hungry just thinking about it. I have also had great, fruity sake there that I havent seen anywhere else.

Comment: Solid brunch place in a cute space and friendly service. The Japanese Breakfast Set has lots of variety and very filling. The Dan Dan Udon is more soupy than I expected (Dan Dan noodles usually are dry noodles) but still very good. The noodle and meat topping portions are both plentiful. The Tonkatsu Sandwich is large, and the pork is crispy but still tender and juicy. The sauces complement the meat very well. The only complaint is that I wish the sauce covered the edges of the bread too, because the bites from the edge of the toast was a bit dry with just bread and pork. For dessert, the Hojicha ice cream is great. The flavor is smoky but so rich in the “green tea” flavor (but the color of the ice cream looks more like coffee).

Comment: I really wanted to like this place, and I will admit the service, drink menu, and execution of the food are all without fault. The concept is incredibly creative - high-end takes on homestyle Japanese food. That said, the menu conceptualization suffers a lot - many of the flavors are just not quite right. The karaage was phenomenal and I would happily order it again, as were the smashed potatoes. The other things we ordered, less so: the ume fritters were great on their own but the pairing of the tahini was just both overwhelming and made the dish bland, the tuna crispy rice sushi is just a sloppy fried mess without distinct flavor, the pickles were a mixed bag with some being overtly sweet (though the curried cauliflower was excellent!) and the sashimi bowl quite simply had way too much going on which greatly detracted from the quality of the fish. I probably wont go back for dinner but still want to try their takeout bentos and their brunch menu just out of curiosity.

Comment: This is a review of the even by Tasting Collective that we attended. It was a 9-Course Modern Japanese Soul Food Feast. Since my favorite cuisine in the world is Japanese food, I was super excited for this event. The Bessou means Holiday Villa, or home away from home, kind of vacation home. The owner opened Bessou to offer a traditional home cooked Japanese food, with a modern twist. The inside is rather small but cozy and home-y. I liked the simplicity of the interior, with some elements that reminds me of traditional Japanese home, like the use of wood on floor and walls, the light fixture, and geometric lines and shapes. They have a small bar seating at the end, where you can look into their kitchen. They do serve alcohol, all sorts of Japanese sake (hot and cold) and beer. Pretty nice selection, so if you like sake or beer, you should check out their drink menu.At this event, we got to try Beef Shortrib Kakuni, Charred Eggplant Caponata, Crispy Rice Salad, Grilled Romaine, Onigiri with Mushroom, Roasted Carrots and Kabocha, Tortilla Japonesa, Whole Dorade, and Strawberry Matcha Shortcake. They were all very tasty. Not so much home-cooked food, unless your mom is a chef... But it was still really nice.We had a great dinner here at Bessou. The servers did a nice job handling our group, and the owner & chef are really sweet. I hope they will have continuous success so that we can go back for another visit. They are open for Brunch as well, I might want to try their Japanese breakfast items in the near future… Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.
