Comment: Such an enjoyable space, the staff were welcoming and warm.Food was outstanding. For my pallet it was complex, having contrast in flavors, temperatures and textures that made for an enjoyable and interesting light meal. While eating I think I witnessed a birthday which made the experience a touch more wholesome. Will definitely be returning to purchase a peice from one of the wonderful artists on display ☺️

Comment: Dashi Okume is a remarkable blend of a restaurant, dashi specialty store, and a haven for Japanese culinary enthusiasts. The dining experience is self-service with a cozy ambiance, offering around 16 table seatings and a few bar tables. The highlight was their teishoku set meals - a culinary delight with options like marinated king salmon (saikyo-zuke) and saba, all freshly prepared and served with tasty sides, miso soup, and rice. The dashi section is a standout, allowing customers to create custom dashi blends. I highly recommend the sweet shellfish dashi - an absolute treat! A great experience for its innovative concept and delicious offerings.

Comment: Dashi Okume is part specialty grocery, part restaurant. It shares its space with another vendor. Their specialty is housemade Dashi and dashi-based products. You can even make your own custom dashi. The restaurant features some dishes with their housemade Dashi.I made my visit on a Monday, around 12PM. I was excited to check this place out after a recommendation from family! They had free samples for some of the different dashi broths you could buy, along with other pantry staples and accessories. I purchased the Tokyo and Osaka dashi mixes and got 2 custom dashi mixes for myself and for a gift for someone.Choosing the ingredients for custom dashi was overwhelming. Thankfully, the staff are well knowledgeable and were able to offer a lot of guidance. I ended up doing a bit of blind picking based on the paper guides they have feature flavour profiles. They turned out great! Both the gift recipient and I enjoyed it. The custom dashi produces about 30 bags, and the price depends on the ingredients you choose. It takes 15 minutes to produce each mix. I love that when you get a custom dashi they print your name on it, and it comes with a label showing what ingredients it contains. On the back, there are instructions showing how to make it, and how you can prevent waste by turning it into furikake. The one thing that prevents me from giving this place 5 stars is the pricing of the dine in menu. I got the mackerel with kabocha squash. It comes with rice, your choice protein with choice vegetables, miso soup, pickled vegetables, white rice, and housemade furikake from their dashi. It was about $58 USD total with tip. Im Canadian so that price conversion meant I spent ~$80 CAD. It was not $80 good, unfortunately. The meal was good, the portions were good, service was good. But it was not outstanding and it was definitely not worth that price. the drinks also seemed to not have free refills, so paying an additional $5 USD for soba cha was not great, because I know how cheap that tea really is.Overall Id recommend others check this place out and Ill probably be back for more of their pantry items, but would not dine in.

Comment: For months I have loved to see pictures of beautiful, balanced, and nourishing Japanese set meals and was so happy to try one in Brooklyn. Set in the bright and fresh 50 Norman, a quarter of the space is dedicated to dashi concocting, premade dashi, furikake, miso, and teas. Food is served adjacent and you can see dashi mixes made fresh (without additives!) through clear windows by the people who work there. The other half is dedicated to unique art, pottery, and fragrances. Everyone is friendly and will give helpful advice and recommendations.PS -shiitake mushroom had such a unique and fragrant flavor. It wasn’t just food, it was an experience!!

Comment: Dashi Okume is life changing. The simplicity of the easy to use Dashi packets and the amazing depth of flavor of the fresh miso motivates me to enjoy a miso soup with almost every meal. When I first tried the packets, I thought: how could this be good? It’s like a teabag. Oh how wrong I was. So much umami flavor. Miso soup better than I’ve ever had in a restaurant, right in my own kitchen. I don’t even add scallion, tofu, or seaweed. It’s incredible on its own.Obsessed.

Comment: The yummiest traditional Japanese meal here. The fish practically melts off the bone and is seasoned so perfect. The dashi and customizable dashi part of the store is top notch. I tell all my Japanese friends in Queens about this place because theres no other place like this in the city.

Comment: Just want you miss from tsukiji outer market or side streets in Tokyo! Buy pre-packaged and make your own custom dashi. There are also a ton of other food items to buy from miso to soba to rice. Dashi does take 20-30 minutes to process, they will call but be aware of the time.

Comment: Stumbled across this place yesterday on my way home and I just want to write a review for the knowledgable and hospitable service I received from Anan. I wanted to take home some dry goods and for at least half hour they explained to me the process of making dashi, possible combinations and all the different flavour profiles of the dry bonito, kombu and mushroom goods.Super happy and cant wait to play around with these ingredients. Thank you so much!

Comment: Great vibes, located inside of a Japanese concessions store. Youre definitely in for an experience when you hang here with your friends and chat for hours over tea and bento set. The set was around $35 and contains a fish and some side dishes. The fish was well prepared, but wished they featured more dashi in their dishes served. Some tofu soup, oden, or chawanmushi would have been nice. Overall light and satisfying meal. Id be curious to try out their broth station next.

Some of the fish has many bones, you might want to ask the staffs’ recommendations if you don’t like the bones. You should definitely come here if you like authentic Japanese food! Love this place!

Comment: I heard about Dashi Okume and the ability to create my own dashi packs. I hate buying the ones in asian grocery stores because I feel like its not fresh so I was excited to receive my order. I ordered a custom dashi pack, miso, and 2 udon packs. When my package arrived, one pack of udon was missing. I tried calling the number shown on google but no one ever picks up. I have sent two emails through their website but have not heard anything back from them... Their miso is so good that I really want to order more but am scared that there is no accountability for missing items and zero customer service. I live in Maryland so its not possible to visit their store without making the trip up to New York. For online buyers, their products are great but if you have problems with your order there is no way to contact them..::EDIT::I was contacted by a pleasant gentleman. He apologized profusely and although I only requested money back for the missing udon noodles, he said they would send a package of other products to try. I received the package in a couple of days and was shocked at how much they spent just to expedite the items. I appreciated the kind gesture and will surely order miso only from Dashi Okume from now on.The pictures are the complimentary products they sent.

Comment: I came across this store while walking in the neighborhood. Coolest surprise ever! The store is immaculate and well decorated. Best of all, it tickles the epicurean in you. If youve never learned about dashi or tried it, this is the perfect place to do so. The store brings over the craftsmanship Japan is famous for - stop by to try samples of unique dashi. It blew my mind - I went back and bought a bag! Will be coming back for more visits (it looked like they have a restaurant in there).

Comment: Beautiful space with Japanese ceramics, restaurant, and pantry goods. There was a bar where you can make your own dashi broth, as well as pre made ones. We tried a sample of the premium dashi and it was super flavorful. I’ll be drinking plenty of these as summer comes to an end, and make noodles and donabe with them.
