Comment: Super fun, small authentic Japanese place. Tons of options. I had the vegetarian dashi with udon and the vegetable tempura roll. When I say the soup was full bodied and the tempura had such a strong umami flavor I cannot emphasize how uniquely well done these basics were. The service was Lightning fast, and the servers were so good humored and accommodating. I asked for a dark beer and they recommended a beer described as chocolatey that was so perfectly what I wanted. I also had the green tea iced cream which was light and not bitter. We went in without a reservation but the staff let us have a table as soon as one opened up. We stayed slightly past closing, but didn’t feel rushed and absolutely enjoyed hearing the staff enjoying each others company. Seems like they are passionate about this place. Comment: The best Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn! I mean it! Besides the lovely and fun interior and the kind and friendly staff, the food is really special. They have the usual sushi rolls and dishes, which are much fresher and tastier than youll find at an average spot, and they also have a lot of unique dishes that arent outlandish but are remarkably good. The best thing is that the special menu changes every day, so a regular like me always has something new to try. The rotating menu has a lot of great cooked fish, vegetables, soups, and marinated or pickled foods. Dont miss the saku saku roll or the Asian broccoli. (And, especially if you order from the standard sushi menu, its very affordable.) Theres also a huge sake selection and theyre knowledgeable about what sake to order.

Comment: We are so in love with Gen we have to stop ourselves from going every night. It is the coziest place with some of the most flavorful food I’ve ever had. The uni don (eel) is mouthwatering, spectacular, and we get it every time. The rolls are hearty and well-priced, and the small omakase is lovely too. Our server is fantastic (I think her name is Yuki, apologies if not), she helped us navigate the drinks menu and was so kind. I loved the “marshmallow notes” sake, we loved the ale too. One of the best places in Brooklyn.

Some of the best sushi Ive had in the city with some great choices available for the more daring diner. I was amazed with the monkfish roe wrapped in shiso and my partners monkfish liver was right up her alley. The less adventurous will enjoy their fine tuna selection and unique takes on familiar rolls.Total bill for the two of us with three beers, two appetizers and two levels of omakase was around $180 before tip, so this may be best for a special occasion, but we felt it was very much worth it.

We ordered udon, sushi omasake, ramen from lunch special menu. But the dishes on their regular menu seem more home cooking and not greasy at all. Comment: We went here and had a really lovely time sitting at the Sushi bar. The staff is hip, snappy, and really friendly. Nice neighborhood spot that was bustling and small and quaint. Really clean fish, the Agadashi tofu was delicious, and had a few rolls and other appetizers. I’ve been to most places around the FT Greene cobble bill P heights Clinton Hill area, and this is one of the better ones!

Comment: I’m lucky that Gen is on my doorstep, but if it wasn’t I’d probably traverse the city to eat here. The vibe is awesome and the staff friendly, but go for the excellent, authentic dishes. The owner, who crafted the wood interior by hand, recently celebrated 12 years in business (pre-gentrification) so here’s to 12 more.

Comment: Great restaurant. Ive been going here for years and at least twice a week with no regrets. Hibachi dishes, sushi platters, the food is so tasty, filling, and refreshing. The people there are also very nice and have a good sense of humor and down-to-earth nature. Overall, I find this place very pleasant to dine at.

Creative and delicious sushi rolls & salad, great sake list (waiter was helpful with recommendations and served the sake at two temperatures so we could taste the subtle difference), attentive and charming staff, and the new back patio area was so pleasant. Decor is modern but has the feel of an old-fashioned paper-wall dining room. Ive been craving that sushi ever since.

Comment: Gen is a special neighborhood place with a warm and creative vibe. Some more experienced companions have told me the food is more authentic japanese. In cold weather I often get the Nabe, which is a soup stew with salmon, oysters and cabbage. I always order the Abstract Garden appetizer, which comprises three things of the chefs choosing and is generally awesome, usually including a great ceviche in warmer weather months. The sushi is delicious. They often do interesting varieties, including uni or monk fish liver.

Comment: I stopped by here for dinner late in the evening and was surprised to find that it was pretty packed (but thats probably just due to limited table space). I ordered a normal spicy salmon roll and a special roll and discovered that the salmon roll was tiny, but the special roll made up for it. The service was slow but you could see they were pretty busy and possibly understaffed. Overall the meal was enjoyable, but I just wish service was a bit better. I see myself coming back though, so I guess what counts.

Comment: When I get sushi at a moderately to cheaply priced establishment, I am usually all about value. Give me lots of delicious fish for not so much money, and you have a friend in me. However Gen is in an interesting place where they substitute some value for creativity.The creativity is what will bump this up from three to four stars. Right now the value part of my brain keeps sending me red signals. You had to order food after eating the omakase the last time you were there! Remember that time when you needed extra rice to go with the curry roll? This rating is wrong!!!Settle down value brain. If Gen were the kind of place that just served up a couple rolls with the standard dozen types of fish, charged more because its not a take out joint, youd be right. But sometimes, something different is required.I like that Gen does specials that change and are interesting. I like that there is a dinner vibe at 9:45 PM on a Sunday. I like that its an enjoyable experience that makes me look forward to going back. I like all of it enough to get that fourth star.
