Comment: Forget your pedestrian bivalves, friends! Hastuhana has unleashed a kraken of oyster perfection, served with the siren song of real, spine-tingling authentic wasabi. We slurped, we savored, and frankly, our oyster compass is forever askew. Normal oysters now seem like cardboard cutouts of their former glory. And then theres the Dream Box, an edible masterpiece thats as much art as appetizer. We felt like barbarians gnawing on the Mona Lisa, but oh, what glorious barbarians we were! Every bite was a brushstroke of flavor, a testament to culinary genius.Speaking of genius, lets raise a sake to Umi. This sake sang on our tongues, a melody that wooed us into instant, devoted fans. Were hooked, line and sinker! But Hastuhana isnt just about the food (though, dear gods, the food!). The service is a symphony of attentiveness. Coats whisked away like fallen leaves, watchful eyes ensuring every plate arrives like a precious jewel. Its the kind of care that makes you feel like royalty, minus the stuffy crowns.Hastuhana, youve stolen our hearts (and probably a few taste buds along the way). Well be back, lured by the siren song of wasabi and the promise of oyster nirvana. Consider us loyal subjects of your delicious kingdom!

Comment: Went for lunch with my friend. It gets crowded during lunch time. It’s better to make a reservation than to just walk in. The sushi’s are great. Miso soup tastes just as perfect. Would like to go back & try other dishes in the menu. Nice cozy restaurant with very friendly servers.

Comment: I had such a good experience here. I’m glad that omakase is so trendy now but I wanted to find somewhere with a more old-school feel and Hatsuhuana is the perfect place for that. I made my reservation in advance and called to make sure that they could seat us at the sushi bar, and they did.We got the 18 piece omakase, and when Jimmy, the sushi chef, overheard it was my birthday, he went out of his way to make me feel extra special. The fish was so delicious and made better by Jimmy and his apprentice checking in to make sure everything was good as the meal went on. At the end they brought me out mochi with a candle and sang happy birthday. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Comment: Food here is authentic, fresh and tasty. However, service could use some improvement. The waitress was nice but pretty inexperienced. The restaurant advertised an omakase for less than $100 ( no description about it just a vaguely sashimi and omakase) so we thought we got that when we said well have the omakase. The waitress then mentioned something about chefs choice which for us means omakase because the word literally is leave it to the chefs discretion. Apparently, there is a not advertised true omakase that the chef will choose for the customer but costs significantly more because it doesnt even have a price. The bill was more than double of what we expected but luckily we were able to afford the nice meal and had no issue paying for it. Still, it was an annoying situation since she just assumed that we wanted to order something thats not even on the menu and didnt clarify with the customer . Just be aware...

Comment: The food is good. However there is a table of Chinese customers who speaks very loudly and destroy the whole atmosphere of the restaurant. There could be sign that remind customers not to create noise and speak softly. We ordered some sushi and they are delicious. We could try that again but maybe when the atmosphere problem is resolved.

Comment: A 530 PM table for two at Hatsuhana on a Wednesday yielded the absolute best sashimi that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting, as well as impeccable service from all staff. We first ordered hot green teas and an avocado salad, and due to my gluten intolerance, the dish was modified by removing the sauce. We followed this with a Sashimi Deluxe plate each, (modified for me of course) where our server identified every piece of fish on the beautifully presented plate for us. The sashimi was a religious experience. I savored every bite of fish, some with eyes closed. Not only was there tsuma on the plate like normal, very good seaweed was present as well. The wasabi is real wasabi, and when we ordered individual pieces of salmon toro sushi, there was a tasteful dot of wasabi tucked between the fish and rice. Our green tea was never empty, with multiple perfectly timed free refills. After we finished our meals, we were presented with complementary houjicha (roasted green tea)! We left Hatsuhana with full bellies and a good mood, grabbing a few M&Ms from the complementary M&M dispenser on our way out.

Comment: Hatsuhana Lunch was a delight. A friendly welcome, very professional - organizing a place at the sushi bar on the second floor. The waitress welcomed us with hand sanitizer & a hot towel to clean the hands! I went for the Sushi Jo Lunch Menu, including a delicious Miso soup. The sushi was served Omakase style, top quality in taste (especially the Yellowtail ✨) In addition I ordered Nato Beans, yummy. The sushi chef timed the servings well, had always an eye on us and refilled the ginger. Overall five stars for a very satisfying lunch.

Comment: This is one of the restaurants with most attentive service Ive been to in NYC (Ive reviewed over 100 by now). And its not intrusive service like in other high-end places (like Gramercy Tavern, for instance). However, the food is good, but not extraordinary. Many places in a lower price point offer sashimi and sushi of a similar quality. I wish I could give them five stars on service alone.

Comment: Maybe its just me but when I go for omakase Im picturing sitting at the sushi bar, the chef working his mastery around the rice and sashimi, serving one piece of art at a time.Hatsuhana (my 2nd time being here) is a box they bring to your table. Yes it looks pretty and its cheaper than a traditional omakase. However for me it loses the chefs tasting aspect of it. Also the taste of the sushi itself was ok. Not amazing as Ive been to some places that have blown my mind.Regardless, good place, cool ambiance and amazing staff.

Comment: 5-star experience, any time. Called in last minute for a lunch spot, got a seat upstairs for the first seating. Asked my server, Mink, to surprise me (omakase style) and she asked the bar if they could do the dinner special for me. Mitake tempura followed by 15 knockout nigiri: madai, kinmedai, akamizuke, kampachi, salmon belly, aji, sawara, saba, chu toro, SB uni, ikura, hotate, tako, anago, and negi toro (in order). Each as fresh and flavorfull as the last and the hot tea cup was never less than half full. Highly recommend visiting and reserving in advance.Update March 2023: sit at the bar for a great dine in experience. The Dreams Box is a delightful e pero me with some of the freshest and delicious selections in the menu. Just don’t come in a hurry because this place is packed at lunch prime time. Comment: Made a res for 6 (max allowed on Resy) but they very easily adjusted to add one more for our party granted it was a Monday but we sat comfortably at a table for 8. Was suspicious if the fish was going to be fresh on a Monday but it certainly was! Got Shishito Peppers which for the most part werent spicy but grilled very well, miso soup was solid, tempura app also solid and the Dream Box was so fun to eat! Great variety of fish, top quality and sushi rice at the bottom of every little bowl which I finished so definitely was content at the end of the meal.A bit on the pricier side, but sushi in NYC generally is so nothing new there.Service was great as well!Very cozy simple ambiance. Highly recommend the scallop, spicy yellowtail, and toro scallion. The uni was also delicious.Would pass on the king crab (was meh) and didnt think the amberjack was anything special. Dessert (mochi ice cream) was okay but nothing to write home about.Overall, a great experience with good food. Only knock is that it is not the place for an intimate dinner (pretty crowded and we were right next to so many people)

Comment: Sushi remains of quality at a somewhat reasonable price. Appreciate that lunches are efficient so a good business lunch can happen. The fish is always pretty fresh with a good variety, with the exception of uni. Have definitely had fresher uni than here, but easy to avoid. The -1 star is for the servers. Not sure if theres extra pay involved but they really upsell the menu. We are asked at least 3x if we are sure we dont want the most expensive appetizer option, and always recommend the more expensive entree options on the menu. Theres no need to be so pushy - people will eat the sushi, its good.

The server was so friendly and cleared the table of empty dishes and refilled drinks almost immediately I was very impressed. Comment: I’m not in midtown often, but had a nice lunch here. The menu is a bit smaller but some options come with either miso soup or a salad. The unagi kyuri is a good option if you don’t want rice, but I thought it was a bit pricey. Waiter was very friendly and overall has a business lunch vibe. There is more seating upstairs too.

Comment: We came for dinner on a Tuesday night with a reservation and were led straight to our table in the back of the restaurant. It likes very quaint but the servers were very helpful. The fish is super fresh and the whole experience was wonderful. We got the special miso soup as a starter and it was so good, kind of more smoky than regular miso.We wanted to try the box of frames and their rolls so they brought out the rolls as an appetizer. We got the eel, yellowtail scallion, and the spicy tuna rolls. My favorite was the yellowtail scallion it was perfectly balanced And I could honestly have three rolls of just that. The box of dreams: beautiful and delicious. Don’t be deceived, by the beautiful presentation, the box of dreams is very filling with perfectly balanced combinations of fish and flavors. I was pleasantly surprised to find Uni and toro in the box, definitely worth it!For dessert, the green tea dessert with red bean and mocha was a nice way to close our meal. The green tea ice cream was so creamy and delicious.

Their sushi dinner and deluxe sushi dinner are both great options- but if you’re up for a semi splurge, I highly recommend the Box of Dreams- 9 little bowls of rice topped with beautifully sliced fish and various garnishes to complement each piece. They also have an excellent sushi bar for sitting and having a higher end experience! I highly recommend!

Comment: Hatsuhana was a great sushi experience. The fish seemed pretty fresh. The salmon carpaccio offer a good balance of savory and acidity. The box of dreams had a large variety of seafood. Each bite felt distinct and made me crave the next piece. The toro tekka don is great if youre big fan of tuna. you get the same tuna in the box of dreams so if youre just looking for a taste of tuna, the box of dreams is the way to go. I would not recommend the spicy crunchy maki. it was soggy by the time it arrived at the table and was drowned in the spicy mayo. you could not taste the shrimp, tuna, or salmon at all. overall the experience was pretty great. our server was very friendly and made sure our glasses were filled throughout the meal.

Comment: Throughout the numerous Japanese restaurants I have gone to, Hatsuhana has exceeded my expectations of high quality food and service. Felt like I was transported into Japan as I stepped into the restaurant. My family went to eat there on a Tuesday night so the wait was only 15 minutes. We ordered the two box of dreams, salmon mother & child donburi, and sashimi. When I ate the ikura from the box of dreams, it was so delicious and melted on my tongue, an experience that was incredible. The sashimi was very fresh and the rice was great. The wasabi you could tell was different then the regular ones and it really brings the flavor of the fish. Overall, would recommend and would visit again.

Comment: Went here with my boyfriend as a last minute dinner after visiting the moma. We were lucky it was open to walk in because it was Monday, and the seating area upstairs was absolutely beautiful. The price point is a bit high but totally makes sense because of the food quality. Everything was delicious, presented beautifully, and the service was the best of all. We never had to ask for water or for really anything because the service team was completely on top of everything we needed, sometimes even before we realized we needed it. Best service I’ve received since the pandemic began last year. 10/10 would recommend.

Comment: Hatsuhana is a traditional Japanese restaurant located in midtown NY where I have loved coming for sushi for years, but on my recent visit, I found the fish not as flavorful. The menu allows you to order the omakase ($100 for 15 pieces) or you can choose the sashimi deluxe or sashimi and sushi combination ($40), which is what I did. Overall, it was yummy and a good value, but I think maybe some of the fish were frozen before and it tasted and felt a little watery. But the wait staff is friendly and service is fast. This is a great place for a business lunch or dinner.

Comment: Cant believe I havent reviewed this place yet. It is hands down my favorite sushi spot in the city. Ive been for lunch a number of times as well as dinner. It is not the cheapest place in the world, but I really enjoy going for special occasions and especially for their lunch deals. Spicy rolls like tuna or salmon are usually a glob of mayo, but here its something completely different -- really light and the perfect amount of heat. Its also nice, big pieces of fish (not a ground up food processor mess). Their green tea ice cream is also one of the best. Its smooth and not too sugary. Service is A+ and I strongly suggest making a reservation before showing up. If you work in the area and havent been, what are you waiting for??

The host was very friendly and sat us at our table and accommodated our request to sit at the sushi bar.I ordered the sushi dinner and my fiancee ordered the roll dinner. The presentation was great, fish was very fresh, and taste was amazing. The rolls were prepared well and the rice was superb. Coming from the west coast where fresh fish is abundant, we can definitely be sushi snobs; however, Hatsuhana exceeded all expectations by serving fresh delicious buttery fish. Please come here and eat. Comment: While we had a bit of a wait as walk-ins, it was well worth it for the great service and delicious, high quality sushi and sashimi. I had the box of nine varieties and the homemade miso soup. Our server was very knowledgeable and recommended the best sake and entrees. This was a short walk from the Rockefeller center and I would recommend it to tourists.

Comment: I usually don’t take the time to write reviews, but Hatsuhana was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had anywhere let alone in NYC. I love sushi but when we walked in off the street and realized that Hatsuhana is more traditional than we were used to, I was feeling a little ignorant of the proper customs. The staff was so welcoming and friendly. Our waiter set up everything at our table so we didn’t have to sit there trying to figure out the proper amount of soy sauce and where to set the chopsticks without looking like total dummies. Our waiter could tell we were slightly out of our element and took it upon himself to explain the set up of the menu and make some recommendations. We ordered a sake at his recommendation which paired perfectly with the sushi dishes we ordered and I didn’t even touch the sake carafe as the waiter made sure my glass was always full. He checked on us several times to make sure we were enjoying the food, which was amazing. All in all, Hatsuhana is a very traditional sushi experience with excellent service.

Comment: Excellent 🍣The staff is especially professional. The crowd is usually business-people and you can expect a wait for lunch during a weekday because of all the offices in the neighborhood. The chefs choice sushi and sashimi dishes are especially excellent.

Comment: Safe to say this place has amazing sushi! I am not disappointed. When sitting down they give you a warm towel to cleanse your hands before you start your meal.We ordered the sushi box of dreams which was truly fantastic. Nice selection of Sakis available as well. The server was very quick and attentive to the table. Given the decor, the service and the experience - I know Ill definitely be back!Great for business, friends, or imagine a date.

Comment: I did an take out order. Place is very neat and comfortable, doesnt serve drinks which is okay cause not all establishments serve alcohol. They take reservations, have a sushi bar, and have a coat/bag check. Told Me 15 min for an order but it was only 7 minutes. Host was professional and do consider recommending to a friend.

Comment: The food quality and service were excellent, but the food seems to be a bit overpriced. It is around 100 for two people.

Comment: Crab avocado salad was dished a bit funny (crab avocado separated in an avocado half above the salad greens) but quite delicious. Chawanmushi was delicate and had a couple varieties of mushroom and some eel! What a treasure map of flavors.Couldnt resist the Box of Dreams and sushi/sashimi combination. Tasted fresh, had decent variety, but wish the yellowtail/scallion roll were tastier. Couldnt really taste either component. But glad to have some slices of salmon around brightened up with yuzu sauce. Even if salmon isnt part of the traditional Japanese palate, yuzu sauce helps contrast the rich flavors some find overwhelming.Service was fine; wish they had refilled the tasty green tea a couple more times (got refilled once throughout the hour meal, waiting some 35 minutes for someone to refresh the tea mugs).Tried the Dassai 50 (nigori) sake with dinner. Sweet & fragrant, with a clean finish. Would recommend especially for price. Would have considered dessert more seriously if the box & sushi/sashimi combo hadnt been so plentiful!
