Comment: Currently the best sushi Ive had in NYC. For a fair price as well! You can taste that the fish is fresh, and it comes with a variety too so not just the most common ones. The desserts were great too and I like it all around.

Comment: The essence of Japanese cuisine is simplicity and allowing quality ingredients to shine. Hibino is the physical manifestation of that mission, and it excels on all fronts. With its simple open dining room of tan colored wood tables you could have stumbled upon this place in a small town anywhere in Japan.Specials are presented on an adorable chalk board resting on a small kids chair. The day we were there a young lady was managing the entire floor acting as both waiter, host and busboy and never missed a beat. The food is fresh, authentic and delicious. We ordered a variety of sushi 🍣 and a couple of salads which were all excellent. The bento box 🍱 seems to be the shining star and I will order one the next time I am there. There is a lot to love on their diverse menu, reason enough to return. While clearly a local favorite for those in the know, the adjacent 7 train station makes it a tempting alternative to Manhattan joints.

Comment: I ordered the salmon miso zuke entree and a soft shell crab roll. Everything delicious! Salmon skin crispy. What stood out to me in the whole meal were the side of vegetables! Wow, they were perfectly cooked and seasoned and great crispy texture. I’m really big on temperature of food. The food came out very hot :). Even the bottom bowl of the rice was hot.

Comment: Sushi is very good. Everything not sushi was bad. Can only recommend sushi items. Salmon belly over sushi rice and blue crab roll are both fantastic. Scallop roll also very good.Shrimp toji maki was gross. Soggy breaded exterior and shrimp filling was not fresh tasting. Chicken teriyaki was disgusting. Nobody ate it. Very gamey feeling and maybe not all the way cooked.Four stars for some very nice sushi dishes. Not going to ding too much for the other stuff, which I probably shouldn’t have ordered in the first place.

Comment: My expectation might be too high so that I was a little bit disappointed after visiting. The price was overall ok, so the portion was overall small. Taste was overall “home-style,” something you might cook at home which means nothing unique.Everything tasted fine but something off or plain or dull.. no recommended dishes. I’m wondering if I didn’t get their best one.

Comment: It pains me to even write this review because I want so badly to be selfish and keep this local neighborhood gem to myself. This is my go-to sushi spot in all of New York City...the simple and beautiful aesthetics, the small and intimate feel of the restaurant, the always-pleasant and fast customer service, the insanely reasonable prices to quality ratio, the perfect menu with a mix of sushi classics and more interesting/local items, the fact that their menu changes everyday...man, Ive said too much, now youre all gonna come here. Hibino is the best!

Comment: My go-to Japanese restaurant in this price range. After trying a few menu options I always go for the sushi or sashimi plate that has amazing fresh cuts of fish. Can’t find better anywhere for a $20-something price range. All the appetizers I’ve tried are excellent as well.Interior is really nice with a good amount of space between tables to have a more chill laid back atmosphere even when packed. Nice place for a daytime date if you can get a spot that’s not at the communal table. Service is great and even the ice cream and desserts are delicious.

Comment: This location often has limited seating available. To secure a table, I recommend reserving one ahead of time especially for special occasions. The employees are welcoming and I like that there is a new set of obanzai (written on the blackboard sign) everyday to choose from. For a light lunch, my partner and I shared the Hibino Sushi Plate which consists of seven pieces of assorted sushi with Kyoto style futomaki as well as the Agedashi Tofu. Both items were prepared with care and the plating was something to feast your eyes on. We savored each perfectly balanced bite and will be back for more as we settle down in Long Island City.

Comment: Update: wrote this excellent review 5 years ago. Recently went with my family and the waitress was rude, impatient and a little mean to my kids. Quite shocking for a Japanese restaurant where helpful service is always front and center. Owners take note. We loved this place but not sure we will return. Old review: a lovely place. Food is always excellent, with a fantastic assortment of familiar and unusual dishes, both small plates and large. Very kid friendly, providing a changing table, high chairs and kid chopsticks. Its also beautiful inside, with small details like a monogrammed glass for fresh tofu. Perfect for a date as well as a family dinner. No reservations but Ive never had to wait for a table. Eat here before the word gets out.

Comment: Yum, a great place with authentic Japanese in the neighborhood. I love that they bring a sign around that has the specials of the day, which we normally order. All of their dons are delicious, and so are their sushi dishes. Its a small but cozy environment, and the food makes you feel welcomed. I love coming for dinner and ordering a sake to go with our meal and finishing off with a dessert that they have available. It can get pretty busy during the peak hours/days, so I recommend going a little off-peak to guarantee a spot.

Comment: Best bento box Ive ever had! Every time I go to a Japanese restaurant and order bento box, theyre all mediocre with common menus (i.e. teriyaki). But here, theres a variety and the taste is above average as well. And lunch price makes it much more worthwhile. We tried stir fried pork belly and fried panko crusted chicken thigh. The pork belly had a fire taste (불맛) and the taste was well-balanced. Panko crusted chicken was juicy and the crust was crunchy. I definitely would return and look forward to trying different menus.

Comment: Their sushi omakase uses only sashimi that melts in your mouth. I have paid the same price $45 for omakase elsewhere in LIC and always felt disappointed until I tried Hibino. They used to offer sashimi omakase until the coronavirus pandemic hit. Now they offer lunch and dinner and the sushi omakase delivers just as buttery soft. I hope they bring the sashimi omakase back. Until then I will still be their devoted fan of their sushi omakase. Their green tea ice cream is matcha-filled good.

Comment: My boyfriend and I came here right before closing at around 8pm. They are open for outdoor dining during this time and as another reviewer said there aren’t too many tables (3 tables) for seating. That said, there we were the only party at that time.I really enjoyed the meal, the food reminds me of a cozy home, food made carefully and using good quality ingredients. The meals for an additional add on came with a miso soup, an small side dish and rice.To start we got fresh tofu which came hot or cold. We got it cold and it is served in a small jar with side ginger and sauce. Very unique little starter and and certainly opens up your appetite. We got the Miso Salmon as an entree, which surprisingly came quickly and was very soft and tender. Normally other Japanese restaurants grill / fry and the salmon is tough, but not here.We also ordered the Hibino Sushi Plate that came with 15 pieces of assorted sashimi and rice. The cuts of fish were fresh and presented well.As a dessert a woman who seemed like the owner offered us soy tea and she made sure it’s not caffeinated on the house. She suggested a red bean Tayaki fish to finish off our meal and came out with refills for the tea (very good tea by the way). All in all, it was a good dining experience.

Comment: The best sushi in Long Island City. Facts. I’ve lived in LIC for a year and have tried every spot multiple times. Hibino is leaps and bounds above them all and can easily hang with the best in all of NYC. They are consistent. The fish is always fresh and buttery. The sushi rice is the right texture and temperature. Their spicy mayo just hits a little different for the best accent. The menu is simple. If you want fake sushi with crazy rolls that have a billion things this ain’t your spot. If you want the real real look no further. Hibino is what every sushi place should be, genuinely delicious.

Comment: The interior of Hibino is simple, adorable and cozy with authentic Japanese decoration but limited seats. Staff was attentive, welcoming and we felt like home to dine in.Food was surprisingly delicious and our favorites were Hibino chirashi which served with fresh sashimi and beef kakuni which was well braised, melted when you chewed with great portion. The teriyaki chicken was, not as good as expected, was dry and the sauce was too salty. We also recommend to try their amazing dessert as a perfect ending. We had Taiyaki, Hibino pudding (or tofu), green tea ice cream and we cannot decide which was the best but the Hibino pudding was really special here.

Comment: This restaurant captured the coziness and the taste of a small family-owned establishment along a Kyoto Street. From the hiragana font on the door, the way the patterns of light emanated from the glass fixtures, and the sleek yet warm tables gave this humble setting a presence. My friend and I enjoyed the box sushi and the obanzai specials. I also loved how the homemade tofu was served in little glass bottles. The service was also excellent thanks to the warm hospitality of the staff. This restaurant really stood out from other Japanese restaurants in the city as it focused on good quality ingredients and understated yet elegant presentation. Highly recommended!

Comment: I like the minimalist vibe of the overall restaurant. No weird edm music blaring in the background, not too much clutter on the tables either which I appreciate so much. There was no sushi bar seating but individual tables as well a big communal seating table as well.Menu is very concise and to the point. Ordered the seaweed salad and obanzai small plate special called Subuta: pork chunks coated in potato starch, pan fried and then simmered with onions and peppers in a sour and semi sweet sauce. The seaweed salad was unlike any other Ive had. A long plate that featured 4 different types of seaweed, all gently marinated and seasoned perfectly. The Subuta was a bit lackluster in seasoning. Cooked to perfection but nothing stood out about the entire dish except for the mild sour bite of the sauce. For mains, ordered the Hibino Sushi plate: very fresh fish for sure and the sushi rice was nicely seasoned too. Also tried the short rib hot entree and that was a huge disappointment. Short rib sauce was delicious and the accompanying fresh cold housemade tofu and the veggies lightly blanched in salt water were delicious as well but the short rib was stringy, chewy, dry and burnt. There was nothing call of the bone, melt in your mouth about it sadly. Our server saw that I had not really touched my dish and asked if I wanted to take it home or if there was something wrong with it, so I politely told her the meat was pretty much inedible to which she quickly apologized for and comped us a custard like dessert. It was appreciated but not necessary. It is a good solid place to go to in a sushi craving pinch especially if youre in the area.

Comment: I dont know if this is the absolute best sushi in New York, but it almost has to be the best for the price. This is not a hundreds-of-dollars-per-person omakase place. The prices are modest - we spent $40-50 per person including drinks and tip - and the fish is some of the freshest Ive ever had. Its not just tuna and yellowtail, either - it varies by the day, presumably based on whats at the fish market. Make sure to try other dishes as well - there is a rotating list of small plates to share.

Their house made tofu is also quite nice, cold version is great for the summer. Tonkatsu is a bit overcooked every time we had it, as a result, its crunchy but slightly dry. (Ootoya is a better bet for Tonkatsu.) Kaisen don is of good value. Sushi is really not their strong suit though. Overall, a good place for dinner in the neighbourhood.

Comment: A simple small restaurant with an ambiance that reminded me of Tokyo. Hot food is excellent. I particularly like the obanzai. However the sushi is probably just average. A nice location for meet ups.

Comment: Their Chicken Teriyaki is one of the best plates of food Ive ever had. All reasonably priced. Friendly staff. Warm and inviting space. Interesting iPod. Good sakes and wines. A few more beers on the beer list would do them well, but this place is A FIND!
