Comment: Food was great! I got the omu soba and frozen mirin beer for myself and my boyfriend got the chicken katsu. We shared the kani cream croquettes and a chikaten roll. So much food, but we devoured it all.

Comment: Izakaya Mew was amazing! The food was absolutely flavorful, fresh, and delicious. My partner and I tried and shared small plates and everything was incredible. A few of my faves were thr Mew sushi roll, soy chicken wings, soba, the fried octopus balls! The service was great and the restaurant was full of people. The only small critique we had was that the music was too loud to try to have dinner conversation over. Other than that wed highly recommend and would love to return!

Comment: Came here for lunch and ordered the kimchi cream udon, grilled mackerel, and a salmon sushi roll. The udon and mackerel came with soup and side dishes. I personally enjoyed the mackerel the most. Prices are extremely reasonable, service was very fast, and overall had a lovely meal.

Comment: Finding a cute, affordable dining option in the midtown is already a rarity. The Kimchi Cream Udon (comes with shrimp) is my go-to order. If youre feeling sushi, then the dynamite roll is to die for! I bring all my friends here. This is a great spot if youre arriving/ leaving from Penn station, which is an 8 minute walk away. Check out the H-Mart/ TesoLife store nearby to grab some snacks for the ride home.Im docking a star on the atmosphere because while aesthetic, its noisy during dinnertime so it can be hard to hear the conversation with people at your table!Be warned, if you want to go for dinner youll need to book at least three days in advance!

Comment: Lunch:Mew has won me over for their tasty hamburg steak, which was a generous portion with a bold and zesty pan sauce. I’ll be coming back for that! The creamy udon was great as well!Sushi / sashimi sets are decent for this price point, and some dishes are better than others IMHO. Find your own favorites!

Comment: Came here during brunch time with my friends. We ordered two sushi rolls, unagi rice bowl, kimchi cream udon, kaarage, shrimp shumai and a hamburg set for me!My friends all said that their dishes were super good. We shared the karaage with the table and it was hot and crunchy, wish it came with a sauce though! The shrimp shumai was okay, not mind blowing but just good for what it is. I didn’t try my friend’s dish’s but my hamburg set was super good! I love the tomato sauce that it came with and it was a large portion. The side dishes that my set came with were good too! Along with the price being on the cheaper price for brunch, I would come back here again. Super affordable!

Comment: Izakaya MEW was fine, the food was good and came out quickly. But the service was mediocre, felt like our party was being rushed to finish while simultaneously not being taken care of when we flagged down the staff. I often see long lines outside this restaurant, the food is good but I don’t know if the experience is great enough to justify a 30-45 min wait.

Comment: We hit up Izakaya MEW at 5 pm, and even though there was a line when they opened, we got seated right away. The vibe was on point, with 90s hip-hop and perfect lighting. It felt like a house party, but instead, we were treated to an amazing meal. The staff was super friendly and attentive. We tried their frozen beer, volcano roll, kimchi udon, and tantan men – all seriously delicious! I highly recommend this spot! 🍣🍜🍻

Comment: Came to this place for lunch with about 6 coworkers around 11:45a, which was perfect because the lunch rush gets crazyyyy & youll have to wait to be seated. To start the vibe was good and not gonna lie it felt kinda like a club in the middle of the day with the low lighting & music they had playing. They played a lot of Post Malone lol! Now for the Food, I ended up getting the gyoza to start which I enjoyed, but wish I has more of the sauce that comes on the side because I like saucy things and in every bite, but they were yummy. For my entree, I got the Tantan men Ramen, which was good and not too spicy. Im rating them a 4 star because I honestly was hoping to have some Chicken Teriyaki, but it wasnt on the menu at all, which I thought was interesting. Overall, the service was good, the food came out as they were ready vs. waiting for everyone plate to be served at the same time....I would definitely consider coming back. I just wish they had more chicken options.

Comment: A great spot in ktown with great service and even better food. I usually will come here for lunch with friends or taking co-workers who are in town since it’s close by my office and the lunch sets are a great deal.Their kimchi cream udon and salmon donburi bowl are two of my favorite things to get here! Was very impressed with how fresh the salmon was (no fishy flavor at all).Try to make a reservation if you can since seating can be limited and keep in mind that it can get really noisy here (especially during dinner time)

Very energetic vibe with loud music, and service was good too.My friend and I tried the Mushroom Kakiage (tempura), Tan Shio (grilled beef tongue), Hamachi Kamayaki (grilled yellowtail collar), and Kurobuta Pork Udon. Everything was tasty and in good portion for the price.Reservation is strongly recommended as this place gets busy and fill up fast.

Comment: This is one of my favourite Izakayas in NYC. They have the typical dishes like sashimi, agedashi tofu, goma-ae, and takowasa, but their unique spin on traditional dishes is what really stands out. Examples of these are:Omu Soba: This is your typical omurice, but with yakisoba instead of rice underneathTakoyaki Kara Age: Takoyaki, but deep fried like ika karaageButa Potato Maki: Grilled skewer with pork belly, mashed potato, a dark miso gochujang sauce, and topped with scallions. I was skeptical at first because of the mashed potato, but it softened up the entire dish and complemented the crispy pork belly very well.Geso Kara: Like ika karaage, but with squid legs! Very crunchy!Kimchi Cream Udon: Luxuriously decadent noodles with a hint of truffle flavour. This is really rich, so Id go easy on it!

Comment: Stayed in Midtown for the week and looked for a restaurant that served ramen and okonomiyaki. MEW was the most highly rated in the area, and for good reason. Everything was delicious, pleasing to look at, and service was great. You could tell there was good teamwork. The wait was about 45 minutes on a weekday, so a reservation would be wise for the weekend. Next time I am in the city, I will be visiting again :).

Comment: This basement Japanese spot provides a cozy vibe for any kind of gatherings and be prepared for the noise around. The designs are simple, casual, but warm and not messy. The food is good and cocktails are 100%. Also, they have plenty of choices of Sake. Dont miss out if youre a fan. I saw many ppl having draft beer as well but Im loyal to their Fall In Toki. I enjoy the smoky taste. The 1st time I tried their special ramen with peanut butter sauce put aside, which can be dipped or poured into to enjoy together. But it seems its off the menu. The 2nd time was checking on the Nigiri set. It was fine, not bad just no impression.

Comment: Food: 9.5/10. Im someone who doesnt like udon, but the udon here was DELICIOUS. Springy, tangy noodles. Four HUGE pieces of excellent pork. All served in a beautiful, hot stone pot. The geso karaage was lightly fried and perfectly crisp, without too much oil dripping off. The zuko salmon don was a MASSIVE portion of nicely marinated salmon, some toppings, and a bed of sushi rice. I dont really like okonomiyaki, and this places didnt change my mind, but it was well done. The tiramisu at the end was the perfect amount of sweet, served in an adorable wooden box alongside hefty metal spoons. All of the above was under $75 - you will NOT find these prices at any other popular izakayas (looking at you, nonono), and if you do, youll get small, tapas-sized portions.Service: Extremely quick service. Food was out fast, and the waitress was attentive despite the place literally CRAWLING with people late on a weekend. We were lucky enough to snag a last-minute 8 PM reservation for 2 after a surprise Resy notification, but there were large groups waiting outside. Seated us early even though we arrived 10 or so minutes before our time.Atmosphere: Its very lively and upbeat. It has nice, warm lighting, and their bar section reminds me of a better-lit dive bar somewhere further downtown. This is still technically an izakaya, meaning there is a focus on alcohol. Its loud, boisterous, and tons of fun, but probably not the greatest place to bring your kids.Izakaya MEW is located in a tourist hotspot (right off Herald Square and close to Ktown), but its tucked away into its own, underground oasis. The food is well-priced, filling, and excellent. Would 100% recommend for anybody looking to get Japanese food thats not sushi.Toodaloo!

Comment: Absolutely awesome food with a a super vibrant atmosphere. Located down in the basement of a building. Gotta go down dingy staircase with sticky rails (don’t touch the rails) but once down there food and environment is just booming! Quick service, super friendly waiters, loud vibrant music, young professionals, yuppies, college students, the occasional older couples. Food is a take on typical Japanese cuisine with a fusion. The good kind of fusion and mix. Truffle oil in roll, mashed jalapeños dollops in rolls, yuzu oil onions and cilantros with hamachi slices, fatty tiny roll…. It’s yummy! Must try this wonderful basement place.

I bit in to the gyoza and thought, “oh this is how these should taste” as if all the others I’ve had were not the same thing. The sushi roll was so fresh and the kalbi and gyu don were cooked and seasoned perfectly. And the ambiance. The basement made the restaurant and the music playlist was a Millennial’s dream. Comment: I absolutely love the food. It is both affordable and high quality. I had to wait almost an hour to get in, but it was worth the wait. Absolutely love the Omu Soba, the refreshing Kurobuta Pork Udon, and your amazing Sashimi Salad. Not to mention the delicious cheese cake dessert. My one constructive feedback is with the Katsu don. I really separating the Katsu and the rice over a layer of shredded cabbage or serving the Katsu on the side because the steam from the rice ruined the crispy texture of the katsu for me. But overall everything was delicious!

The champs were Hotate Carpaccio, Seaweed Salad, Chicken Nanban, Kalbi!!, Una Don topped with cheese, oh.. I’d run out of ideas.. most of the dishes were scrumptious and worth trying at least once in your life. The place was on the underground so you gotta walk down the stairs once so it’s not accessible for patrons with wheelchairs. You can either make a reservation (which I really recommend) or walk in although you need to wait a bit (yet it’s worth it - trust me!). But the thing is since it’s a small space and mostly packed, especially during dinner, the place can be so loud and you might find it hard to talk or even listen to your group. Overall, a great experience, and willing to visit again soon !! 🤤

Comment: Had a good time here. Loved the ambience. Didn’t make reservation and was immediately seated upon walk-in. The food was quite pricey but delicious. I’m not a big fan of raw fish but the dynamite roll was really good. Mackerel was good as well. I enjoyed my udon; the bowl looked small but it was surprisingly filling. We both loved the grilled shrimp as well. They were serving a special, i think it was called Loco Moco? Didn’t really think the guac paired with the sauce well but it was alright. Service was okay, just wish everyone was more smiley than having a straight face

Comment: RESERVE before you come, it gets packed really quick. The entrance is very small and its easy to miss it since its located between two restaurants. The restaurant is at the basement level.I went for lunch and the price is really reasonable!Got myself the Kimchi Cream Udon. Ive never had something like this before, very unique. A little to creamy for me and would prefer it to be a little spicy. The lunch set comes with miso soup and mashed pumpkin ball with sunflower seeds in it.Staff are super friendly and the food came really quick! Efficiency level 10/10Its a nice cozy setting, not stuffy nor warm inside. Would definitely come back to try other food in their menu.

Comment: We ordered many dishes and drinks, most of them were good except for the beef tongue. Price was reasonable. The only problem was that the restaurant is too popular so there are always people waiting outside for a table. Waiters are so busy taking away empty plates and clean your table ahead of time, which makes you feel clock counting down. I would comeback for a quick meal. But if I want to enjoy a good drinking and chatting time with friends I would go to a less popular restaurant.

Comment: Are you looking to get authentic Japanese cuisine in Manhattan without traveling to Japan? My wife found it at Izakaya Mew, a short walk from Penn Station. Introducing you all to a genuine Izakaya. If youre unfamiliar with the term, think small plates at a pub often in plain spaces like basements. This venue is quite large but fills up quickly. Make reservations. The staff excitingly greet you in Japanese when you enter just like youd experience in Japan.Theyve got a large menu with raw and cooked dishes. Once you order, dishes will come to your table in minutes. Staff is super attentive and patient. We ordered salmon sashimi tacos, chicken nanban, and nigiri set, and I dont recall what else. All the dishes were incredible, and if we had a larger appetite, we wouldve ordered more. Everything was top-notch and high quality. The fried chicken was really something special!Cant wait to go back!!!! FYI, it all came to $55, including tax. What a steal!

Comment: Izakaya MEW was electric. Very unassuming from the street, but you walk down into a very cool, crowded restaurant space. The food selection is massive and everything was incredible. Fast service and quality across the board. Salmon tacos were amazing, rolls were fresh, the Chicken Karaage was out of the world and the Yaki Udon.... I have no words to describe. We absolutely feasted here.

Comment: People werent kidding when they say this place is easy to miss. Despite the front being hard to find, there is still a wait to get a table. For a party of 2 it was 30-40 minutes on a Sunday evening. The layout of the tables can make it feel a bit crowded, but the interior decor makes up for it and not too overwhelming imo.You have a choice between getting several smaller dishes for a lower cost, or medium dish for higher price. Quality of the food was delicious, and the drinks tasted okay too! Cocktails were average price, around ~$15. I would advise if youre interested in getting any, do not expect a strong drink! I wish I could eat more to try more of their dishes, but Ill just have to come back another time.

Comment: The salmon tacos and beer frosty are really for Instagram only. Skip those and go straight to the sushi rolls and sashimi, which are excellent. Comment: A small cozy area downstairs for food, kinda cramped the tables next to each other but they r popular so that explains that.miso soup is bland, very watered downramen is eh nothing crazy, get other items. i got tan tan bc i wanted something spicy wasn’t spicy to me just oily frm the chili oil, the noodles are nothing special no chew.i usually order their salmon bowl: it’s GREAT! fish fresh w avocado good steal for the price. makes me full and you ask for wasabi (they give the real wasabi, not the imitation ones)and soy sauce too!the creamy shrimp udon was very good the first time i had it and the shrimp was big. but a couple months passed the shrimp is way smaller. couldn’t even noticed the shrimp in the udon, but it still taste pretty good.the fried chicken was good too.service is good and quickmy pick has to be the salmon bowl great quality fish n great price!!!free hot tea too!!!!(i think)

Comment: I would happily recommend Izakaya MEW to lovers of Japanese food who want to enjoy more than just sushi. Something to keep in mind is that the restaurant is located in the basement and can get pretty loud when it’s packed. We went to Izakaya MEW on a rainy night for dinner. We ordered the tuna dome, agedashi tofu, okonomiyaki, yellowtail carpaccio, yosenabe, nabeyaki udon, and a few drinks. The tuna dome was extremely tasty. The fish itself tasted quite fresh and came in a pretty generous portion. The agedashi tofu came out crispy and paired well with the ground ginger, seaweed, bonito flakes, scallions, and a tasty sauce. The yellowtail carpaccio was easily one of the best things of the night. The yellowtail combined with the onions and sauce made for a perfect bite. The okonomiyaki came out in a hot skillet and was tasty. Both the yosenabe and nabeyaki udon were especially satisfying on a cold and rainy night. The udon broth was tasty but was otherwise a pretty typical udon. The yosenabe came with lots of vegetables and a pretty generous portion of fish as well. The drinks we had ordered were also very tasty as well.

Comment: Once upon a time, this was a go-to place in midtown. They offer an excellent happy hour. You can soak in a pitcher of beer with colleagues and or friends. They are small dishes, and not-so-small plates are ideal for sharing. It has been a few years now since my last visit, but it is exciting that they are still in business. The atmosphere is def rustic, and the interior brings the traditional izakaya look, which always reminded me of another place in Shibuya. Honestly, a few drinks down, and I forget I am in NYC, but I think I might as well be in Tokyo. What to try if this is your first time? Well, go with your gut instinct, and no pun intended but go with the pork belly/ gut, try the fried chicken, or conquer the shishito peppers. As far as I remember, they have a good selection of sake. Well, maybe not as diverse as the one they have in sakagura, but there is plenty.

Comment: Lively place where you can enjoy some amazing Japanese cuisine. Their waitlist is a bit competitive where you’ll need to wait around 30~40mins for walk-in after 6pm without reservation. The space is quite narrow, but the atmosphere is quite dark and gives a bit of moody feeling for your dinner. For the Kirin Ichiban beer, it’s a bit of lottery for me. One day it tastes like one of the best beer you could taste, but another day it tastes really bad. I don’t know if it’s because of my mood of the day or the machine condition, but the taste varies. Overall, lovely place to visit again!

Comment: This izakaya is located in the basement so carefully look for their sign. This is a very busy place at night, plan ahead if you hope to have dinner. They have a illustrated menu and a good list of cocktail/sake (also illustrated) so great for drink lovers. Overall the tastes and menu selections are great, but not necessarily surprising. These are common courses that you can expect in a Japan restaurant -- or more accurately speaking, it is American-Japanese fusion rather than pure Japan. For travelers or people looking for a date dinner place, this is a safe choice that wouldnt let you disappoint.

Comment: Everything here is mouthwatering. I personally recommend trying the Amakara Sweet & Sour Ribs they were so juicy, tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned. I really liked the shrimp dumplings as well. The Kimchi Cream Udon was very yummy, but I think it could do without the asparagus. The frozen beer was a fun and unique experience since I havent see it anywhere else. The old fashioned is a must, the japanese whiskey was so smooth and the aromas from the cinnamon and lemon sealed the deal for me. The ambiance was very intimate despite of the business and I loved the 90s hip hop music playing in the background. Im definitely coming back when visiting NYC. One thing for sure is that you have to plan to wait about 20-30 min for dinner on any given night as they are extremely busy, which I will say is worth the wait.

Comment: From the frozen beer to the grilled beef tongue to the frozen mochi dessert, this was one of the best Japanese restaurants Ive eaten at in NYC. Every dish knocked it out of the park. I wouldnt call the restaurant an izakaya but the food definitely is: lots of fusion and creative elements.

Comment: Delicious Japanese food, cool and quirky drinks, OUTSTANDING COSTUMER SERVICE!My boyfriend and I came to NYC for a weekend trip; we had booked some tickets to see a Comedy Show and we wanted to have food and drinks to pregame, so I found this place and placed a reservation in advance but did not workout the time since the show we were going was at 10pm, so they were so nice in helping us getting seated so wouldn’t miss our show!!! So awesome of you guys! Because you made our night so much better with your food and great service. We ordered drinks, some rolls and tataki, although I wanted to have Okonomiyaki, it contains pork, by my request, they prepared it without the pork! So it would be pescatarian friendly! Again so thankful! If you want to pre-game before a show/concert/Broadway show; this place has great cocktails and their signature Frozen Kirin (frozen beer) is soooo good! We just came back to DC, and my boyfriend who (ordered it twice) was like “omg I need to have another frozen beer!”Definitely will recommend this place and will return to try all the other dishes!

Comment: This place is the BEST izakaya in town! I regret going on Sunday and should have gone there on Friday or Saturday night. It has this cozy yet lively party vibe where you enjoy the fun environment but still have intimate conversation with your own group at the table.Everything is so delicious. I ordered omu yakisoba, nabe and tofu salad. The omu yakisoba is a must try. My friend who has never tried Japanese food loved it so much. The tea infused vodka is also a bomb.

Comment: Unique Japanese noodle, rice shop on 35th and 6th avenue. The good:- inventive and variant menu.- Ramen, rice bowls, sushi mix boxes, rolls, grilled mackerel mix boxes.- above average flavors.- fair prices for the portions. The not so good:- only 1 gripe, my ramen tonkatsu was a bit lukewarm, could have been higher temperature on the broth.Very very solid experience for this Japanese Restaurant with a wide variety of options.

Comment: HOLY MOLY! Everything at this place was phenomenal! Its hard to miss as its tucked away along a street down the stairs.I would highly recommend trying a few things and sharing so you can get those taste buds flowing from all angles.Things we shared:-Salmon Tacos*-Okooonomiyaki-Kimchi Cream Udon*-Volcano Roll-Dynamite RollIf I had to choose one item to each twice from here - it would definitely be the Kimchi Cream Udon. So creamy and so flavorful, you just cant stop eating it. The salmon tacos are very small, but a great little appetizer to share. Warning: youll want to eat both, but if you are ordering a lot of food to try, youll be happy with the one. The Okooonomiyaki was very different - a great mixture of delicious items.I would definitely stop here again when I go back to New York.

Comment: We ordered several dishes to share from the lunch menu. For appetizers, fried chicken, pan-fried dumplings and goma ae are all very delicious. For main dishes, omu soba and kimchi cream udon are the two best dishes. Gyu don is also not bad. However, both the shoyu ramen and tantan men are not good. The soup flavors are off, and the noodle texture is too soft. There’s even a ball of miso/sauce not fully dissolved in the soup. Overall, it’s a very nice Japanese restaurant, but customers should really avoid ordering ramen here.

Comment: Absolutely amazing from the food to the atmosphere. It has a lightly-dim but warm, cozy feel inside, a vibe similar to that of pubs/izakaya’s in Japan. Loved the retro-yet-modern look of the place and the 1980’s Japanese City Pop music. The food was cooked perfectly, udon was al-dente and had a great texture to them, soup was soul-warming on a cold day in NYC.Sushi was fresh & delicious, loved the Scallop nigiri and seared-salmon.If you’re a foodie too, or just want a neat place to eat out with your friends or colleagues, this is a great hidden-gem tucked away right on 35th street nearby Herald Square.

Comment: We made the mistake of showing up around prime time at 630. We didn’t get a spot til closer to 8. It’s amazingly popular considering the entryway is a tiny sign that goes down some steps. But once inside you realize that it’s a hopping place. So much so that you really can’t hear anything the person next to you is saying. The sound level is ridiculous- maybe this is bc the restaurant was totally full and there was a big party celebrating a bday. The sound carries for sure. Back to the food. The menu is wonderful. There are so many authentic choices. The servers and everyone there speaks Japanese. The choices go from sushi, to fried food to noodles and tempura. They have a lot of great options that you won’t find many places. We got the Amakara ribs, Asari udon, and the nigiri set. For the portion size and the quality, I thought the prices were very reasonable, especially for New York. I would definitely go back to try the other parts of the menu that we didn’t get a chance to try. Raving review for me.

Comment: Absolutely delicious! The highlights for us were the corn tempura, cold eggplant, the cheesecake, and the kiwi cocktail. I thought the hamachi kama seemed a little dry, the tuna roll a little bland, and the grilled octopus too strongly flavored. The service was very fast and overall a good experience and very tasty food. Would highly recommend making a reservation to nothave to wait as long in line.

Comment: Izakaya MEW is a cute little restaurant hidden on the edge of ktown. I definitely walked by it by accident. It has a massive variety of food. The creamy kimchi udon is a must have. the kara-age was super juicy and even better using the creamy kimchi udon sauce. The cheesecake couldve been further caramelized for my taste, but wasnt overly sweet regardless. I will definitely be coming back to try more food.

Comment: Their food is so good. One of the most fresh fishes I had. Especially like the fat tuna. The restaurant is under ground floor in basement. The decorations are just so so. If you don’t want to order the lunch special, you should avoid to this place between 12 and 3 pm. They are too busy during that time frame so service is not that good. For example, it took more than 20 minutes to get my cheesecake. But I can understand that and will reduce the rating because of that. We are here for food so food is the most important thing.

Comment: This is a pretty good restaurant. The owners spent a lot of time with the menu, every item on the menu has an image which is a pleasant and appreciative surprise. We had sushi which was good. Drinks can be made virgin upon request.Things to note about this place.1. Its located in a basement, so expect to go down some steep stairs.2. There isnt really a huge or proper waiting area so make a reservation, as it has to potential to get crowded very easily.3. The restaurant itself is small, tables seemed to be close together not a great deal of space. If youre on the heavy side Im not sure how comfortable youd be at this location.4. Seating wasnt the most comfortable. There are couches but lots of foldable metal chairs (no cushion) which we were seated at.5. The lighting and ambiance is beautiful.6. The wait staff is really helpful, but seemed overwhelmed. It took a while to get the attention of a waiter/waitress a few times.Overall, A good place to visit.

Comment: 6 years later, and the creamy kimchi udon is still good as ever! Could have used more shrimp (there was only one) but its definitely not a dealbreaker.I ordered via GrubHub for takeout. I got there a bit early but my order was still finished before the quoted time frame. They have indoor dining and separated partitions, and they take temperatures, but Im still not comfortable doing indoor dining, so I just got it for pick-up. This time, we had the kalbi, tan shio (beef tongue), katsudon rice with chicken, and Mew special roll. The kalbi was flavorful and tender (for the most part). It came with some cabbage and a side salad, so that was nice. On the other hand, the beef tongue was pretty chewy and it was pretty bland. The katsudon was good - no complaints there. It was nice to have some of that rice with the kalbi. Mew special roll is another go-to but for take-out, it isnt as good because I think the heat from the seared salmon ended up cooking it the rest of the way.Im glad this place survived the pandemic because I need to come back again for that creamy kimchi udon!

Comment: Izakaya Mew offers outdoor seating during these times shared with Cho Dang Gol. Although it proclaims to be an izakaya restaurant, it offers a variety of nigiri and sushi roll options. The dynamite roll was fairly solid although I think you would be better off going to a dedicated sushi restaurant if that is the main course they are seeking. The yellowtail carpaccio is excellent with fresh tasting fish and a bright, apple ponzu dressing. The hamachi kamayaki is very nicely grilled while still retaining a moist, tender flesh. The takoyaki is exactly as you would expect with a crisp exterior and a tender piece of octopus inside. The entrees are primarily fusions of Korean, Japanese, and Western dishes, think Yoshoku with some Korean flavors as well. The omu soba is a play on omurice but with yakisoba as the starch, pretty good although honestly a bit much in terms of quantity. The kimchi cream udon is basically a creamy shrimp and asparagus pasta dish but with bouncy, chewy udon noodles as the pasta. Really quite tasty although it is fairly heavy on the palette and the kimchi offers much more in the way of color rather than flavor. Would definitely recommend this dish to everybody who comes here but I would recommend sharing it with another person as I think it simply becomes too creamy and homogenous to eat an entire plate of on your own. The yuzu cheesecake is a pretty nice NY style cheesecake but there isnt any taste of yuzu which I think would really help. The warabimochi and azuki on the other hand is a really great dessert with the cold, chewy warabimochi coated in kinako being a true delight. Although I wouldnt describe the food and atmosphere as being a particularly authentic izakaya experience, it was a great Japanese fusion food experience and certainly one of the better fusion restaurants in Manhattan. I recommend coming with a friend and ordering a variety of the sides and sharing the mains.

Comment: Make sure you are out in good time, this is a popular and small place so you have to wait if you aren’t early...Here if you can find the tiny door squeezed inbetween other restaurants you will walk down into the basement and instantly feel like you are in tokyo, a trendy and hip part of Tokyo that is.The waiters were really friendly and a big part of the positive experience! The food was really good and filled with rich flavours, i ordered mostly from the grill menu and a plate of sweet and sour fried chicken. I loved this place and would give it a five star if it wasn’t to loud in there for us, probably doesn’t bother most of you.

Comment: With its extensive menu that offers everything from ramen to sushi, I was skeptical whether the quality will be high. I was pleasantly surprised by how good everything tasted. To be fair, this isnt a purist Japanese place; they use sauces and such to elevate and sometimes overpower the ingredients, but its flavorful nonetheless and Im not complaining. The vibe is casual and chaotic. They unfortunately have placed the bar right at the entrance so its crowded right when you enter the restaurant. Once you squeeze through the crowd, there are maybe a dozen wooden tables. Service was very friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. It was kind of loud with no interior decor element to absorb the noise. Overall, a pretty decent place to visit. The wait was very long though so make sure you plan ahead.

Comment: Heard lots of great reviews Of this place so wanted to check it out. Came here last night on the very cold and wintry day, and we were seated immediately as the lines were not that long. We ordered Yellowtail sashimi, scallops sashimi, their famous salmon guacamole tacos, kimchi cream udon, karage chicken and their age tofu. The food came out quickly and they were all delicious. Service was attentive but we did feel a little rushed. The sashimi was good but did have a slight overly fishy taste. The kimchi cream udon was a ver unctuous noodle dish and very addicting to slurp the bouncy noodles! Great place but the ventilation is very poor - you do end up smelling like all the kitchen smells when you leave.

Comment: It was a Thursday night only an hour after opening and the waiting area was packed. We were lucky we checked in via Yelp so we were seated around ten, fifteen minutes after we arrived. The restaurant is down a flight of stairs and not very large, so either come at opening or arrive early to enter the waitlist. We ordered the large Oden (fishcakes, broth, mochi and eggs), the takoyaki yakisoba, the Mr Frank Eggplant and Hotate Carpaccio. The broth for the oden was wonderful and the varied items were filling and cooked well. Great for a cold day (we had it middle of the summer). The Mr Frank Eggplant had wonderful flavor, and the beef usually was tender, but sometimes chewy. The eggplant was delicious. The takoyaki yakisoba had a variety of ingredients and was stir fried well. Super tasty, crunchy, colorful, and delicious. Mix it up because adding the mayo they have on the side does give it an extra ounce of flavor and texture. The scallops were sweet with this unique sauce. I think adding the lemon on the side would give it that acidity I felt it was missing, but otherwise, melt in your mouth fresh scallops.Service was nice, quick, and the price really isn’t bad for the amount of food. Would definitely love to come again to try the other items.

The sushi and poke was very fresh and high grade. All the ingredients worked well together including the roe, seaweed and their house sesame sauce. The kimchi cream udon was delicious- the udon was cooked perfectly, kimchi and cream sauce was very tasty. I wasn’t impressed at first but then realized I couldn’t stop eating. The nabeyaki udon was amazing - the soup was flavorful, not salty, chicken pieces were tender, and the shrimp was fresh. The bonito broth was very tasty. Also got the grilled sampler which was excellent- cooked well, tender, seasoned well. Also got drinks which were handcrafted, trendy, and tasty with a good punch. The ambiance is very good and the place can get packed. Definitely want to go back to try other items on the menu!

Comment: We got there little before they opened for the evening, and they already had some people lined up in front of it. Once the door opened at 5pm, we went down the stairs to the main lobby. A staff greeted us and took us to a table immediately. They will not seat you until your entire party is present. The inside was pretty nice size, not huge, but bigger than I thought it would be.Let’s start with the drink. We spotted a very interesting item called the Kirin Frozen Beer. When it arrived, it was like having a soft-served sorbet on top of beer! Very interesting! For food, we had Omu Soba, Yaki Cheese Potato, Karaage. They were all very good and super tasty. The portion was pretty good too, bigger than we thought it would be. Since it was going so well, we decided to order something a bit unusual, Mr. Frank with Eggplant. Well, this is where you might learn that it is not always good to be adventurous with food. This thing was not good at all... We didnt want to end our dinner with the horrible dish, so we ordered Kani Cream Croquettes, which was pretty good, thank goodness.Overall, we had a great dinner here, minus one mistake. Best to stick with more traditional or ordinary dishes… and I recommend ordering few plates at a time, since you never know how large the portion is going to be. The staffs were polite and very efficient. When they walk on the floor to carry a dish or something, they are always checking on all tables.

Comment: This is probably my 5th or 6th time devouring the deliciousness known as Izakaya. Never had a bad meal and never been disappointed with the service.Went with the wife and two of my boys this time so we were able to really flex and order up a lil feast.Kimchi cream udon - Heavenly shrimp dish. Dont ask questions. Just order it.Black Dynamite roll - Crunchy spicy tuna & avocado with the crab stick, and salmon roe lathered up in 3 sauces?!? My favorite roll. Once again, it crushed my expectations. Take all my money.Garlic Fried rice - delicious..but the egg was too hard this time! Slight bummer.Salmon Shashimi - served w/ avocado in this mini taco shell..slammin!Omu Soba - SO this was the dish Ive been biding my time to try cuz it looks gigantic. Now that I had a squad we got it and LORD was it phenomenal! The sauteed Yakisoba noodles mixed with the pork and veggies topped with Bonita flakes and that sauce drizzled all over the omlette holding it all in place.. to die for!! Sweet, salty, meaty whirlwind of flavors. So good I almost forgot to take a pic.Only dessert Ive ever gotten is the red bean ice cream with churros cuz why would you get anything else?? It was thru the roof, of course.Happy hour is undefeated. $15 pitchers of Sapporo cant be beat.

Comment: This place was beaming on a Friday night. The Japanese food was excellent for the price paid. There was a wait of approx. 40 minutes which was fine because they allowed you to enjoy the music and get drinks from the bar. I went with my boyfriend and he really enjoyed the garlic fried rice.

Comment: On a Saturday night, our group of 3 had to wait about 45 minutes to be seated. In the meantime, we had a couple of drinks at the bar. The food was FANTASTIC and fresh! We will definitely be going again!

Comment: Great fusion cuisine. Service was quick. Food arrived fresh. Cooked dishes arrived hot. Prices are not bad for the area and the portion are decent. Unique decor. We tried the kimchi udon, garlic fried rice, salmon pieces dipped in basil oil, and their dynamite roll. They have Sapporo on draft. They are located in the basement in case youre trying to find the establishment.

Comment: The ambience at the place is great despite being in the basement. There is plenty of ventalation. We arrived after 7pm on a Saturday night and didnt have to wait too long (about 30 minutes).Great food and great value. Staff is very friendly. The kimchi udon recommended by waiter was best. The clam udon also tops.We also like the sear tuna, yellow tail kumbucha, mix skewers are all great selections. The fried octopus was good but too greasy for my taste, but an order of kimchi helped cut the fatty taste.Im definitely a fan of this place. Great food fast service and good value.

Comment: Casual fast food style Japanese wine bar. Very authentic with a variety of sushi and cooked beef, chicken and pork. Comes in small plates so you can taste a few dishes for dinner.Happy hour cocktails, sake and beer available at very reasonable price. Highly recommend to go early because there’s always a line soon after opening at 5pm.

Comment: Portions were larger than I thought originally. The food quality is very good and the taste could be a bit less salty. Otherwise, it was extremely busy and they do not take reservations any longer. You can easily miss this restaurant, so, look closer!

Comment: Really loved this place! Everything was delicious and the food came really fast (some came in 5 minutes). Wait was extremely long for 4 people but we kinda knew that was going to happen for a Saturday night. The food and atmosphere was worth the wait though!
