Comment: I took my girlfriend to the Starlight Lounge for her birthday and everything was absolutely perfect. The sashimi was the best Ive had and the service was second to none. They even made a birthday drink for her and a mocktail for me because I dont drink (without me having to mention that). I wish I got our bartender/waiters name because he was fantastic. Thank you for an amazing evening we wont forget!

Comment: We ate at the Straylight level and had just about everything on the small menu because I was there with my starving 21 year old son who just spent an afternoon at the Pokemon Go Fest, lol. Everything was delicious. We shared the sashimi, sushi rice, spicy scallop rolls, alaska salmon avocado, hokkaido uni. My favorite was the sashimi and the super creamy bite size hokkaido uni. I wasnt as much a fan of the spicy scallop rolls just because I love the natural sweetness of fresh scallops and you cant taste the scallops as much with the spicy sauce. In hindsight, I should have got my own sashimi order. It was so fresh and delish. Ambience was a moody, cool vibe. But a bit too dark down in the Straylight level as I would have liked to see my food better! Perhaps some brighter table top lighting?

Comment: Quite possibly one of my favorite omakase experiences in NYC post pandemic. The service at this restaurant is top notch, price point for the omakase experience was very fair. Omakase is a 17 piece chefs choice menu with fish sourced mainly from Japan and various other regions. Our chef Kei was knowledgeable and diligent with his craft. Some notable pieces were the sea scallop, sea shrimp, diced mackerel with ginger and scallion, and Toro with spicy scallion nigiri sushi. The manager Eugene was very friendly and helpful with the selection of sake pairings for our meal. Definitely worth another visit for a special occasion.

Comment: Skip Joe’s and Peachy’s come straight here. Head straight down the pink stairs to Straylight, Juku’s intimate, cozy secret bar for cocktails. We had drinks and an amazing sesame gelato with matcha and crisped rice in a chilled bowl with fresh strawberries. Thoughtful and well balanced. Came here after a pretty subpar meal at Joe’s. Who needs soup dumplings when you can have this ambiance! Enjoy.

Comment: Delicious sushi, highly recommended! Keep in mind that every floor of Juku has its own menu and you need to make reservations according to specific menu/floor. We selected the Straylight menu, and definitely coming back to try out Omakase next time we are in New York. Spicy tuna(left on the picture) and spicy scallops rolls(on the right) are great, we also got oysters, and I have no idea what they used for sauce, but that was amazing. If youre reading this you have to go and check it out. To be honest sushi dont look that great, but the taste is above and beyond my expectations.

Comment: Last night I felt the need, the need for a feed….Since I was in Chinatown I consulted with Google.Google Google on the Phone who’s the fairest sushi of them all? Juku said the phone. Juku.So Juku it was.A pretty nondescript dark door led to a dark “speakeasy” kind of a bar. Upstairs was the Omakase kingdom. Since I didn’t have a reservation I stayed downstairs and had the “Working man” version; the $45 chef’s choice sashimi. I was in Sushi’s heaven.

Comment: Phenomenal. Was looking for a local spot for our anniversary as wed just moved back to NYC and were staying in Chinatown. Spotted a highly-rated place for Omakase and figured itd be a lot of fun, and its the best decision weve made for a while.Chef Kazuo Yoshida is a gracious, masterful and funny host. Each nigiri he passes makes you reconsider which is your new favourite - they are genuinely consistently excellent. Perfect balance of seasonings with soy, wasabi and other flourishes e.g. smoked salt, citrus oils etc. The finishing bowl of perfectly cooked sushi rice with 3 types of uni (sea urchin) from Maine, Santa Barbera, and Hokkaido was breath-taking in its indulgence and generosity.Rest of the staff were professional, warm and on-the-ball.Sake list is excellent - we had a Dassai 23 Junmai Daiginjo which completely blew me away. Ive committed to exploring sake more fully as a category, and this reassured me that its a worthwhile exercise! The end bill isnt light - this is a special occasion spot, unless youre fabulously wealthy. But its worth every penny. Once youve had sushi this good, youll never be able to look at supermarket sashimi the same again.Recommended without hesitation.

Comment: We’ve had several omakase experiences in New York, and this was the most fun and delicious. The sushi counter has its own floor upstairs, with two chefs serving ten seats. The lighting and music were both low key but endearing. The experience was intimate and classic at the same time. Every serving had layers of succulent flavors in its own category, standing out from the rest and really taking us on a journey through the evening (about 2 hours per seating). Some of these servings were complete show-stoppers - the king salmon, for instance, was so tender and flavorful that we shut our eyes and just experienced pure taste for half a minute at a time. This was a killer date night and the staff and chefs were spectacular. Highly recommended, but prepare to pay top dollar for the quality.

Comment: Juku is an absolutely incredible experience. The food is astonishing and easily Michelin-star worthy (even the fried chicken was the best we have ever had). The service is the best of the best, truly defines the top-tier of elegance. My family and I have never had a meal or experience like Juku in a restaurant ever before. The vibe is immaculate as interesting art hangs in every corner, mood lighting illuminates your company, and an upbeat but relaxed beat will make you subconsciously groove in your seat. You can bring any sea-food adverse person here and they will quickly change their tune. The seafood at Juku is masterfully sourced and is so fresh there is absolutely no “fishy” taste to their expertly crafted Sushi. I can’t rave about this place highly enough. There is no other restaurant in Manhattan like Juku. Treat yourself and make a reservation this weekend.

Comment: Juku surprised on the upside! Its on an otherwise quiet, unassuming street in Chinatown, but the sushi and beverage selection holds up well with what you can get in more popular neighborhoods in Manhattan.I got the 12 nigiri + 1 hand roll set, which was amazing value at $65++. The selection of nigiri was great, and all the seafood was quite fresh, including the uni which is always the real test of a quality Japanese restaurant. Will definitely be back here for my sushi cravings!

Comment: Juku is a wonderful, not overly-pretentious experience. My boyfriend and I had omakase dinner reservations for 6pm on a Friday night. We walked onto Mulberry Street and see an unassuming, black storefront with a simple logo of Juku. One could miss this place if they werent paying attention (we did!). We walk into a modern, steel entryway and think, Are we in the right place? We are greeted by the host and have to wait to be seated because it was too early. The place opens promptly at 6pm and we were there at 5:45pm. If youre as eager as we were to eat sushi, be prepared to wait a little or arrive promptly at your reserved time if its at 6pm. We were invited to sit at the bar on the first floor until they were ready to seat us for our omakase upstairs. My boyfriend and I ordered cocktails from the menu (Double O nana and another mezcal one), both of which were DELICIOUS. The bartender was friendly and quick at making our drinks. The host led us upstairs once our seats were ready at the sushi bar. One great thing is that they have coat check so it makes it less cumbersome for you to navigate around the restaurant. Now for the main event: the omakase. Wow what an experience! I would like to preface this with: this is my first omakase experience so read my review how you wish. Our sushi chef asked us if we had any allergies or preferences and started right as we sat down and we were whisked away on our 15-piece dinner. All of the pieces of fish were all so fresh and appropriately seasoned. We had toro, uni, mackerel (to name a few) and ended our dinner with a delicious piece of tomago. From beginning to end, the pieces were well-placed and we left feeling full but not to the point where we hated ourselves. Our sushi chef was informative and friendly and made great conversation. We capped off the night with drinks in the downstairs bar. The bartender, Genesis, was attentive and made awesome drinks. From beginning to end, it was definitely a 5-star experience.

Comment: We celebrated my husbands birthday at Juku and had a delicious and lovely experience here. The omakase was scrumptious; some of my particular favorite pieces were the double otoro, Tasmanian trout, Japanese barracuda, and the Spanish mackerel (and I usually hate mackerel!). Since the restaurant knew it was my husbands birthday, we received a complimentary ice cream dessert which was so good! We were very happy with the entire experience and our meal at Juku.

Comment: Had a memorable experience at Juku for my birthday trip to NYC back in November. I got there a little early and sat at the bar on the base floor. Bartender was super friendly and made a great gin cocktail. My friends got there a little late but we were seated promptly. We ordered chirashi, nigiri, & some other dishes. The fish was superrrrrrr fresh. We ordered more drinks. They hooked me up with a crazy dessert spread and some tequila shots too. After dinner, we went downstairs for more drinks. Great vibe and music. We could have stayed there all night, maybe next time. Thanks Eugene, Ken, & Christian!

Comment: Attentive and friendly and professional. Great cocktails! Great rice. Great sushi (no sashimi), which is perfectly prepared and shared, and the best tamagoyaki *ever*.The omekase comes across as a show: youre in on time; youre out on time; everyone sitting at the bar gets the same servings (except gluten-intolerant/food allergy folks, who are treated commensurately). Then everyone is expected to leave for the next seating. Sure, there is the izakaya, and the nice bar and great bartender downstairs...it just feels like a show. (if you show up late, you will be slightly hurried so youre done on time). So its special, because of the nice service and food and chefs, and delicious, and worth the money, but its also a bit like a theater show. I guess thats one way to keep cost down relative to a more free-flowing omekase (which is also almost certainly more expensive)We will definitely go back, but we might try the downstairs restaurant, cause the food is very very good. Im not sure Id go back for the omekase. I would like to have the recipe for that tamagoyaki. It was a unique experience.

Comment: After a long day of sightseeing, walking in to Juku was just the vibe I was needing.Warm and inviting with trip hop music playing in the background. There are 3 concepts to this restaurant1.) Upstairs, top floor is a priced fixed menu (@$120 per person) sushi chef prepares his choice of sushi for you. Only 12 seats2.) 1st floor, main dining room with menu3.) Bottom floor, very chill and cool vibe, mosaic tiled room that is gorgeous! We were greeted by christian the bartender, who gave us a sake tasting lesson. We so appreciated the customer service! This is not your typical sushi place where you order rolls and sashimi..all the fish flown in daily and is selected for you.So if you are a true sushi person, this is AMAZING and exciting! If you are the typical california roll, spicy tuna person and not to adventurous..not for you..however, there is plenty of options on the menu other than fish.We tried just about everything on the menu but the duck and lamb, well..best Ive ever had!Truly a great find with a gracious and friendly staff!Well done!!

Comment: Update October 2019Still incredible. Not a single star to lose. This is one of my top places for sushi and definitely do the Omakase bar.Feb 2018Honestly a truly memorable experience. The omakase bar upstairs was a nice separation from the busier downstairs. The fish was beautiful, fresh, and delicious. The chefs were kind and shared interesting facts about the fish. We also got a sake pairing recommendation that was delicious!

Comment: Juku is INCREDIBLE! The restaurant has two different floors and two different eating styles. There is 1) Omasake, which is a fixed price for an incredible reservations-only bar-style sushi experience and then 2) Izakaya which is a la carte Japanese cuisine. Both are wonderful and both will be a night to remember. I was in town for a week and ate there twice so I could try each side of the restaurant. I recommend reservations no matter what! Right across from Columbus Park on Mulberry.

Comment: Great sushi selection (we got the chirashi bowl) and three nice dishes from the izakaya menu. Really good cocktails and dessert was on a par with savory dishes. Menu is more expensive than others in the area ($120+ for two including two drinks) but reasonable for New York and anyway it leans more toward fine dining. Strange to see bad reviews - everyone in there seemed to be enjoying it!

Comment: Best japanese retaurant in NY. Unique experience and dishes. Top of the heap: their gyoza with foie-gras. Also the white miso white cod. No fuss, no las vegas, no gimmicks. Cozy atmosphere in the main dining room. Along with Coucou and Peking Duck, Juku completes the Chinatown Triad of 2019.

Comment: Went for the omakase menu upstairs. Overall the service was fun, and the chef warmed up to casual conversation about halfway through. Nothing was mind blowing, but it was a good experience overall with a solid variety. There were 2 pieces that were very lack-luster, but the tasting of uni made up for it. Ive been to a few different sushi omakase menus over the years in NYC, Id say this was a solid 3rd place. There are better for the price point, but there is certainly worse too. There is a great deal of care taken in making the sushi which is very appealing to me and a person in the service industry. I would go back again, but I would also definitely try some other spots before returning.

Also a good selection of Japanese whiskey.Owner is very friendly as is the staff, honestly a very welcoming environment. Also a nice treat was the eclectic speakeasy in the basement. Great way to relax and talk after yummy food. Chances are you will make new friends at the counter and get a chance to chat when you retire to the basement.

Comment: Go through the orange plastic curtains and down the stairs, but check on your left the artistic Before/After pictures and fake cosmetic products. Seat at a quiet table in dim light and cool music. Get one cocktail, and another one, and why not a third one, nobodys judging. Sesame meets Bourbon, Yuzu runs into Aperol, and Matcha can live without Vodka. Have some warm edamame or a truffle cheese sandwich with your drinks.

Comment: 9 course omakase with a handroll at the end. Quality of the sushi was very good, although the nigiri was slightly small. Was still a bit hungry after the omakase, which actually hasnt happened in awhile. The omakase is at a small, simple bar upstairs above the a la carte restaurant. Food was good, but it wasnt enough.Service was exemplary. Check out Straylight bar downstairs!

Comment: This review is for the Izakaya portion of the business. There’s 3 places at Juku: Omakase, Izakaya, Speakeasy. The omakase bar is upstairs, izakaya on the main floor, and speakeasy in the basement.I first heard about this place for their omakase. My friend took his gf their for their anniversary and loved it. They also mentioned there was a izakaya restaurant portion that caught my attention. When I went I made reservations through the GM, Ken, who greeted us once we were seated. The food menu fits on one page but everything we had was executed well. Here’s what we had:⁃ Crab and avocado salad: tasted great. Refreshing flavor. Ask for extra dressing on the side, it’s good.⁃ Shishito peppers: they were stemless! Guessing they took the stems out.⁃ Salmon yakitori: melts in your mouth like butter, best item on the menu.⁃ Chicken yakitori: very moist and tender. Hard to go wrong with chicken (thighs).⁃ Pork katsu sandwich: comes out cut up into piece for you already. Looks like its a few layers of katsu, very filling!⁃ Ice cream dessert: everything on this dessert was made at the restaurant. I would go back just for the desert. Came with some cut up strawberry, a matcha cookie, and a bao (the type you’d normally see w Peking duck) that was like a perfectly fried doughnut.⁃ Seasonal beer (forget the name)⁃ Bob Harris cocktail (basically an old fashioned)Definitely going to come back again for the omakase and the speakeasy. Glad to see Chinatown finally getting well done restaurants like this. Thanks for the hospitality Ken!

Comment: New York is a city known throughout the world for its “innovative” bars and restaurants, but there are very few that embrace that culture of invention and customer-focused creativity to the level that Straylight does. I decided to check out this new (yet already highly respected) Chinatown bar on a whim since I was in the area—and I am so glad that I did. From the moment I peeked my head through the door, I received top notch service. Everyone I spoke to was excited to be a part of this new must-go spot beneath Juku and let their enthusiasm shine through in each conversation they had.The highlight of the night was Straylight’s young (but not-to-be-underestimated) bartender, Frank. Frank is EXTREMELY passionate about his craft and it shows in every drink he makes; his extensive understanding of flavors, fearless creativity, and desire to give each person who sits at his bar a world-class experience made this truly a night to remember. Tell him the kinds of flavors you like, and let him make your decisions for you—you won’t be disappointed.Thank you so much for a wonderful new experience; I’ll be back soon.Your newest regular,Adam

Comment: The quality of the sushi is top notch, the head chef is very funny and likes to joke around while serving you the best pieces of the night! We were seated next to some Japanese who happened to be the chef’s regular from 1 or 8, his former restaurant, and of course they seem to have get some special treat, especially the uni flights with the aged uni sushi, even though we opted for the most expensive omakase but sadly we did not get that uni flights like them, dropping one star for that particular incident.
