We definitely did not expect such a good place thats tucked away near the LIRR station. Large pieces of sashimi. We havent had anything as fresh around NHP, Garden City, or Mineola. Comment: This place has it. Inside I felt like I was in on a secret few know of and in the end I understood why. I was a little skeptical at my first sight of the menu and its prices but it gave me a gleeful expectation, as a reflection of the chefs confidence in his craft. As it turns out Eddie the chef is a Shokunin and you can taste that. The grilled ell was delectable, the gourmet rolls are to die for (try the kubo) amazing salmon skin roll .So this quaint little three stool sushi bar restaurant turns out to be the best Ive had in Nassau county, and thats why people keep a place like this close to the chest. It becomes your spot, you know the staff and other patrons by name and I get it, but it also should be shared and enjoyed by everyone (and youll leave in Good spirits).Stay Beautiful

Comment: I have been coming to this location for many years since it was Cafe Jane, owned by our late friend and brother, Bruce. When Stephanie, his wife, no longer carried the torch, I was crushed to find it was closed.I was pleasantly surprised to see another Asian restaurant take its place.I come each year with a crew of 10 from Oregon to Maine each year on Belmont Eve. We feast for 4 hours while discussing the groups bets the next day on The Test of a Champion.The new owners were very accommodating with keeping up with this group, which feasts like Vikings on a rampage. Their sushi is great and the cooked cuisine we had was excellent as well.I know well be coming here for years to come.In Baffert We Trust!

Comment: For Valentine’s Day we did a family dinner, from the service to the food it was amazing. We had Kani salad, fried dumplings and miso soup. The baby at the table; about a year and a half, tried the tofu from the soup and loved it. Our server was more than happy to bring her a small bowl so she could continue to enjoy. For entrees we had an incredible boat filled with fresh fish, veggies, and beautiful variety of rolls. The two pregnant women had shrimp tempura rolls with cucumber and avocado, rolled to perfection. The fried cheesecake and fried ice cream were to die for, plated so elegantly. All in all everyone will go back soon and indulge in the delicious foods.

Comment: A small Japanese restaurant on the east side of an easily overlooked block of Main St. Between 2nd St and the railroad tracks. An easy walk from the train station. I had lunch there on a cold December day that had me in Mineola for yet another medical appointment.A couple of steps at the front door might make access a problem if you are physically handicapped.Service was prompt and friendly. They put a glass of ice water on my table without my having to ask plus a lovely big carafe of water for refills. Lunch includes hot (green) tea upon request.I had their katsudon panko coated pork with egg. I was expecting it was just going to be dipped in egg to make the panko adhere to the pork. It turned out to be a pleasantly generous bowl of sticky rice topped with a layer of pork and a surprisingly big serving of scrambled egg cooked atop the pork. It wasnt photogenic, but it was tasty and filling.Lunch included a choice of salad or soup. I had the salad and it was good. Before I knew how much food the lunch bowl was going to be, I also ordered their shrimp tempura roll. I used chopsticks for the salad but wasnt deft enough to manage the roll with chopsticks without crumbling it. So I requested a fork. No problem. Promptly provided.The bathroom there is tiny, tiled, unisex and very clean. Be careful at the sink as the hot water is very hot.With tax and tip lunch came to about $25. I left with a full tummy of good food and hot tea. What better way to face being outside on a cold December afternoon?Recommended.

The quality of the food was top notch and the staff were very friendly and attentive.My wife and I had the sushi sashimi for two with the fume special roll, and umi special roll. For starters we had the grilled squid.If theres one word Im going to use in excess is the word fresh. Everything was freshly prepare and the quality was top notch. Each sashimi piece melted in your mouth, and the squid was savory without being overly salty. The salad didnt have any leaves that were starting to turn brown and the miso soup was flavorful. Water glasses were kept full as were our glasses of hot green tea. We left the restaurant full and satisfied.If youre a fan of sushi and sashimi, definitely try this place out.

The intimate, well-run, and family-owned restaurant truly simulates the realities of Japanese cuisine, its character and above all, its food.Located in the heart of Mineola, Kaiyō hosts its customers in a modern, simplistic space where you have the view of the street and the sushi bar. The owners and staff are friendly and constantly attentive, with the fast sit-down, orders, and the endless tea. The sushi rolls list is extensive, with starters of many and well within manys price range.For the appetizer, the tuna carpaccio was well-seasoned with black peppercorn soy sauce and wasabi mayo, the tuna seared to the perfect degree, allowing for the texture of the sashimi to go well with the cooked exterior. The tempura appetizer was pleasantly tasty, with the panko and breading light and complementary with the gingered-infused tempura sauce that accompanies it. The miso soup was well-flavored, tasting surprisingly better than other Japanese restaurants in the vicinity.The sushi and sashimi boat, as the entrée, was above standard, the fish (salmon, tuna, yellow tail, mackerel, and more) was extremely fresh, and the Mikado rolls spicy tuna and special mayo sauce was delightful. The fried rice squares (an appetizer too) were perfectly crunchy and seasoned at the same time - a wonderful complement with the soft rice and fish.Fried ice cream, bananas, and mochi ice cream was ordered for dessert, and all three were amazing. Will definitely order the mochi ice cream the next times that I come to Kaiyō as it was not too sweet, but the ice-cream and mochi were fresh and nice after a meal of sushi.Overall, the first time at Kaiyō Sushi was extremely delightful, and I will be sure to come back and make it my Japanese restaurant go-to. The family-run restaurant is great, as is the food selection, and even price. I will definitely be back in the future, and soon, before this place gets extremely busy!
