Without a reservation we decided to sit at the sushi bar. After being seated by our hostess who had a beautiful Kimono on, we were pleasantly surprised at how friendly the sushi chefs were. We had a wonderful conversation with Katie and SooJung. All the while they were preparing each sushi plate with loving care. Highly recommend Kampai Japanese Steakhouse. Will be sure to visit on our next trip to Binghamton.

Food is very good, whether you get an appetizer, main dish, or dessert. The only thing I would change is the price of drinks and the lack of free refills on fountain and other non-alcoholic drinks. I had the miso soup, angel roll, the jamey roll, and the fried ice cream. Everything I had was great and I would order it again! It is pricey by the end of the meal, so if you eat there plan on paying at least $60 plus tip (likely between $60 and $100).

Comment: This was our first time visiting Kampai and it was wonderful. The Ambience is that of an actual Tokyo or Kyoto steakhouse with Hibachi, traditional Japanese, and sushi style dining. The staff (female) wear a colorful kimono dress and the males wear black vests and black pants. The hibachi meals are shared with other guests and reservations for these are highly recommended to ensure that your party is able to be together and the show involved with the meal preparation is always fun and entertaining. The traditional Japanese and sushi dishes are amazing and very skillfully prepared. There is also a very diverse selection of wines, cocktails and, beers, and sake from which to choose from. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and the portions are generous. This is a family friendly environment but there are plenty of private alcoves available to have a romantic dinner for two without issue. There is plenty of parking and the staff was very friendly and attentive. They take both cash and cards to meet the needs of their patrons. We are absolutely going to come back as our experience was beyond words and recommend this hidden gem to everyone.

I wish I took more photos of our food to do the meal justice, but these few will have to suffice. The head sushi chef was super friendly, attentive to our taste requests (which was just to go on a delicious adventure!) and dished up beautifully crafted plates. The fish was fresh and hearty (no skimping on cuts here!) and the simple vanilla ice cream dessert was made decadent with gold sugar decoration and fruit details.Besides the 12 out of 10 food, Kampais ambiance is fantastic. While we enjoyed our more intimate dinner experience at the sushi bar, there were larger groups enjoying the hibachi tables, something I would like to try on my next visit. I also appreciated that the restaurant manager took the time to check in on us, which was very thoughtful, especially since it was a busier night.I can understand why Kampai has been in business since 1975 and I look forward to my next visit!

Comment: Nine of us had dinner here Monday night for my daughters birthday. The food and entertainment were great in general. A good time was had by all. Gave only four stars for two reasons. Number one, my wife clearly declined the shrimp in the mouth throw but the chef went ahead and bounced one off her face anyways. It hit her on her glasses (thank God she wears glasses so it didnt hit her eye) and left a big greasy smear on the lens. Not cool!! Number two, we each ordered a sushi roll for our appetizer. I ordered the Fallen Angel expecting a little heat with the Habanero but there was none. Eight were delivered shortly after that. Mine didnt arrive until my dinner came. Not sure what happened there but by then I was ready for my dinner and didnt need it, so it was a bit of a waste. We rarely saw the gal who took our order because they use other people to bring the orders out so I had no chance to ask her where my sushi roll was.

The bill for the two of us was almost a hundred dollars and I was planning when I left here what I was going to eat when I got home. They give a generous portion for everything. May be more $ than the other place in the area, but I think the portions and overall experience is better at Kampai.There are a few things that should be attended to. For example there is carpet out front that is duct taped together. There are a few other cosmetic things right out front, that if properly fixed, would go a long was to improve a first impression. This place is BY FAR the closest i have and believe ever will get to having that amazing food here in America. Me and my girlfriend were gifted with a waitress named Heather and she was the kindest we could ever ask for. She went out of her way to ask for the bartender so we could try and find a drink we have been looking for. Finally the food itself. FANTASTIC. The Deluxe sushi plate we ordered was so well presented im only disappointed i didnt snap a picture. We ended our dining experience with a last order of the Rock n Roll which is Eel and avacado, my personal favorite, and i had not made the mistake of forgetting to save this moment. Below is my favorite sushi at my new favorite Japanese restaruant. A very warm thank you for the kind service and incredible food. Truly worth every single penny.

Also, the parking lot gets fill sometimes, so if thats the case, someone lets you know... You then dinner to a lot down there road (Green Acres) and someone picks you up and drop you off at the door.With the hibachi, small parties are often seated with other small parties, but we personally dont mind, and often end up chatting with the others throughout the night. The hibachi chefs are always entertaining! Side note, you can order combinations that arent listed, like upgrading to filet and/or pairing that with shrimp, fish, etc.The sushi is always fresh, delicious, and prepared beautifully. When the sushi bar is full, it can get a little tight up there, but not a problem for me. Even if youre at a hibachi table, you can still order the sushi.

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is always homey and friendly, and the chefs are hilariously entertaining as they cook our meal for us at the hibachi grill. I have been to other Japanese restaurants, but they just cant compare with Kampai, mainly because they just dont have that relaxed friendly atmosphere, almost like Cheers!, where everybody knows your name. If youre ever there and come across a particularly raucous, rowdy table, that will be my family, cheering on our chef. Youre encouraged to cut loose and have fun. PS -- definitely try the green tea ice cream with the sweet bean topping. It is delicious! My favorite entree? The Chefs All-Inclusive. Its got a little bit of everything. Cant beat that!

Comment: Went in a party of 5 for Hibachi. Sat with 3 others at large cooking stations. Complete meals with multiple course. Chefs were funny and entertaining. All the food was great in cluding the dessert cocktail. Higher price for the area but great for special occasions.Did not eat in the dinning room; only had hibachi.
