Comment: One of my go to katsu joint in the city. I’ve been coming here for years and always left with a happy stomach.Nothing fancy about this place but they serve up very decent katsu dishes. One of my personal favorite is the Berkshire Pork Katsu, crispy outside and juicy meat inside. The Curry Katsu are also good and tasty. You gotta give it a shot if you haven’t tried it!

Comment: It was my first time trying katsu and I’m so glad I came here because the food exceeded my expectations. I ordered the Surprise Katsu Curry. The curry was so flavorful and delicious and paired well with the rice. The chicken katsu was crispy and filled me up. The miso soup that came with the meal also was a tasty side dish. Definitely want to come back.

Comment: I was surprised how big the proportions were, and how good the takoyaki was, too. I wish we had better service, but the food was the main point and it ruled. Just one note, the katsu menu is awfully vague, but I guess thats also up to diners to ask the waiter what they are.

Comment: The atmosphere definitely approaches what one would get from a tonkatsu restaurant in Tokyo. We were lucky to arrive at a clam time because there was a big line outside when we left. The restaurant is small and cozy, with people sitting very close to each other. The Berkshire tonkatsu was excellent but everything my group had was delicious. The miso soup tasted very authentic. Service was prompt and friendly, even though the restaurant was very busy.

Was definitely Japan qualityThe atmosphere and service were also very nice and would love to eat againOnly negative thing could be the price but honestly, Thats everywhere else in the city so really cant complain too muchIt would be nice to get like two to three cutlets for this price but, as you would in JapanI mean honestly for like 7 - 15 in Japan you get way more. But this is NYC

Comment: Japanese curry is relatively rare in NYC. Thankfully Katsu-Hama exists! Their chicken katsu curry is just like what youd get in Japan. The katsu itself is perfectly crisp, while the curry sauce bathes your tongue in flavour. I ordered just this one dish and it was enough to fill me up!

Comment: Food: some of the best tonkatsu Ive had in the US. Just like how you get them in Japan. Highly recommend the Berkshire Kurobuta Pork Loin Katsu. The curry was very good as well, oftentimes its either a curry place that does okay tonkatsu, or a tonkatsu place that does okay curry, this places got both :)Service: was a little slow and you have to flag down the servers if you need anything; they seemed short staffed. Food took a while to come out, but it was worth the wait.Came on a Wednesday night around 7, waited about 10 minutes to get seated for a table of two; no reservation.Overall really recommend the place if you are looking for an authentic tonkatsu in the city. Will definitely be back.

Comment: Probably the best tonkatsu Ive had outside of Japan. They do a great job emulating the style of true Japanese katsu (including garnishes/seasonings) and the prices are reasonable as well, all things considered. Makes for a great quick lunch/dinner - I would be prepared for a bit of a wait on weekends though.

Comment: I came back a year later to try a new menu item! And the food was still great :). I tried their prawn gozen set, super fulfilling and delicious!! Even had some leftovers because it was a lot of food haha, but def recommend their cheaper option (teishoku) if you want to save a few $$. It’s essentially the same but the soup is diff and no potato salad.. my friends got teishoku sets and were still very full!Even though we came on a Sunday for brunch, the service was a still slow.. We had to flag them down a few times to take our order, to pay, and refill water :(. We were seated in the back so there was not a lot of visibility for a big group.

The coating for the pork and chicken was so crispy (but NOT oily) and the meats were so tender and moist. Comment: Had the Berkshire Pork Katsu Curry with Rice + Cabbage Salad and Miso Soup. The pork was beautifully fried, and the curry was flavorful. I would come back and eat this again. Comment: Decent, but very typical tonkatsu, especially for a restaurant that specializes in katsu. The pork katsu was excellent, but I believe that they shouldve cut more slices out of the one large slab of fried pork. The sauces provided proved their point on why they go alongside with the pork katsu. Also I felt they fried it for longer than expected. But this is still a good spot for tonkatsu in NYC if you dont want to go to Japan.Miso soup and cabbage were game changers, as eating the cabbage felt like it was cleaning your throat for the next thing you may eat. It was very packed, especially on a weekday around 1 in the afternoon, so that is why service was slow, and the food to come out. Overall, nice no-frills but traditional spot but with excellent food.

Comment: My recent visit to Katsu-Hama left me thoroughly satisfied, particularly after indulging in their Berkshire Pork Loin Cutlet Gozen Set Meal. The star of the show was undoubtedly the pork loin cutlet itself. It boasted a perfect balance of tenderness and juiciness, complemented by a delectably crispy breadcrumb coating. The portion size was generous, ensuring a fulfilling dining experience. (Cost $33)Accompanying the cutlet were a variety of delightful components. The miso soup offered a rich and savory flavor that harmonized beautifully with the main dish. The rice was flawlessly cooked, and the cabbage salad provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the cutlet. Additional highlights included the pickles and a side of fruit. The service at Katsu-Hama was friendly and efficient, with the staff displaying attentiveness throughout the meal. The cozy and inviting ambiance further enhanced the overall dining experience. While the quality of the food and service earned my praise, I must note that the price point was slightly higher than expected, which is why Im rating it four stars instead of five. However, if youre willing to splurge a bit, the Berkshire Pork Loin Cutlet Gozen Set Meal is well worth it.

Comment: * Katsuhama Special Set Gozen (4.5/5)* Chicken Katsu Curry (4/5)* Pork & Veg soup is better than regular miso soup* Service (3/5)Came here on Sunday evening and the restaurant was packed and there was a shorter wait for a party of 2. We ordered right away and waited close to 30 minutes for our food. We wouldnt have minded the wait if they hadnt forgotten about our drinks (which was just water) for 20 minutes. The Katsu is made to order so it is fresh from the fryer and crispy. I got the Berkshire Pork Loin in my Katsuhama set but didnt feel that it was that tender or any more special that the cheaper pork cuts. Shrimp katsu was good. The curry sauce was also just okay, youre not missing out on anything. Overall, a good meal.

Comment: Speciality restaurant with a focus on Pork Katsu (fried pork cutlet) with a few other complimentary items. Berkshire Katsu is the premium meat selection.Relatively small place but doesn’t feel cramped. Good service especially for an almost always packed house. There hasn’t been too many times I’ve visited where there isn’t a small line near the door waiting for a table. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations. However, other than a Saturday night at 6:30, most times I think you will be seated in 10-15 minutes.Tasty and served hot. Yes it’s fried but not weighted down in oil. Definitely recommended.05/17/2023Added a few more pictures.Delicious as before. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

Comment: Some restaurants grace us with their presence. I’m so grateful they’re even an option in the city. Katsu-Hama is one of them. Get the A-Set (you bet!) for the soul-warming tonjiru, regardless of what you order. In the past, I went to Japanese curry restaurants for the amazing curry and put up with the lackluster katsu. When I first tried this restaurant, I expected amazing katsu and lackluster curry. It turned out the katsu AND curry are far better than at curry shops. I’ve stopped going to other places. If I crave Japanese curry, I go here.Recently they’ve added thick-cut katsu to the menu (not pictured) and I enjoy it even more than the katsu curry. It’s more plain, sure, but it doesn’t sit heavily in the stomach and you can focus on the sweetness of the pork.

Comment: Great spot for some katsus! We came in a little past 12nn on 3/18/23 and we were seated right away (there was only two of us fyi). It’s slightly tight inside so its not the most ideal place for larger groups unless youre all willing to wait for the larger table. Otherwise its not so bad for smaller groups of like 2-4 or when youre eating solo.Service was prompt and we got our orders timely. The takoyaki was delicious although not as meaty as others ive tried. Tasty nonetheless. My favorite app that time though was their tuna poke! Very nicely flavored with sauces that didnt overpower. Fish was fresh and had beautiful color too.As for the katsus: Both Big Berkshire and my order of Berkshire curry katsu were delicious. Perfect in crispiness, delicious flavor, meaty and generous in portion. We had no left overs at all lol At first hubster was worried that Big Berkshire might not be cooked right because it was “big” but the meat was cooked very well while maintaining that tenderness of the meat but still having that nice crunch on the outside. For me, I enjoyed my order as well. I loved the added pickled peppers since it added color to the dish. And more importantly, i definitey loved that the curry katsu was so flavorful and when you smother that rice with that sauce…man its such a good lunch indeed!

Comment: I dream of this place and I wish they opened a location in the bay area. Both the miso and oroshi variations of the katsu pork are amazing and I cant decide which I like better. The miso glaze is a sweet and rich flavor, whereas the oroshi is zesty and refreshing.I recommend getting the combo that comes with the vegetable and miso soup, but that soup is seriously one of the highlights. Weve tried the regular miso soup before and that is nothing special. The pork soup is definitely worth the extra couple dollars. I guarantee you.

Comment: Had a lunch special at Katsu Hama in midtown, Manhattan. Seated right away at the sushi bar, and they brought out food within minutes of ordering. Perfect if you work nearby and youre on a time crunch. Staff came by frequently to check on me and keep the water full. Indoor seating, takeout, or delivery only. No outdoor area. Cell signal quality is poor and no Wi-Fi.Got miso soup, nigiri with chilled fresh fish I couldve been consuming in Japan, chicken katsu, pickled vegetables, sushi rice, eggplant, and Japanese style potato salad. Large portion for the midtown price.Cant wait to go back!

Comment: Got to visit on a cold winter afternoon with no wait. I’ve heard the lunch rush here is a bit hectic but a Saturday visit made it worth the walk. Located right by the Grand Central 47th Street exit sits Katsu-Hama. Ordered the Chicken Katsu don and it was by far one of the best katsu dishes I’ve had. Rice, egg and chicken was incredibly fresh and I enjoyed their selection of sake and appetizers. We ordered the seafood lovers dish and the rice balls which were a favorite. Can’t wait to go back for some good katsu!

Comment: Great Katsu curry with a number of options! The speciality is the Berkshire Pork - a little more expensive, but tasted great. Meals come with two starter/side options: our set A combo came with a Pork Miso Soup and Potato Salad - the soup was delicious. Theres one draft beer option in different sizes, but its a refreshing and light beer that goes well with the food. Youd be forgiven for walking past the place from the outside, but its worth the trip. We didnt book ahead and were easily seated at a table of 2 around 18:30 on a Tuesday, though it was filling up soon after that.

Comment: The restaurant messed up our order and we have to wait 40 minutes for a regular pork katsu combo. After we waited the first 30 minutes, they said they messed up our order and would give us the next one in 2 minutes, but proceeded to let us wait 10 more minutes (the table that came 25 minutes later than we did got their katsu pretty much at the same time as we did). After all this, they made no attempt to ‘make this right’.I’m quite disappointed.Update: went there 2 times after and the experiences were smooth. The katsu tasted good consistently and I’m modifying my rating.

Comment: Great restaurant! Had to wait about 15 minutes for seats during lunch time but it was worth it. I forgot the name of the appetizer but the server recommended it so we tried it and it was good :) I like how the tofu was slightly fried outside but soft inside. We got the pork Katsu and chicken katsu curry set. Definitely recommend trying their curry! They gave a generous portion. It was really filling since we got the set with the potato salad and meat&vegetable miso soup! Their ginger dressing was perfect for my salad, not too strong of a ginger taste. Servers were friendly, I will definitely be coming back!

Comment: This is a Japanese restaurant. それは美味しいラストランですThe food is delicious, we have ordered a set with pork and shrimp, there are soups and rice. A small bowl of sesame is served for us to mix with the sauce for the pork. The pork and tempura shrimp are fired, just at the right level. However there was not enough staff, so the serving was quite slow, we need to wait a while every time to get a waiter/waitress.

Comment: Wow, so good! Tonkatsu was delicious. Can tell it was fried in fresh oil. Pork was very juicy, thick and tender. Miso soup, which is usually a throw away at most Japanese restaurants, was delicious. They put all sorts of delicious items in it like konyaku, giving it a nice texture. Cabbage was very fresh and a nice complement to the fried entre. One of the best meals Ive had. Super filling too. Just beware of the mustard, its super strong like wasabi. And the place is a bit small. But top notch all around.

Comment: The portions here are HUGE, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything tasted great as well. My only complaint were the “cocktails”. They were canned drinks that were poured into a mug with ice. By the end of our meal, it was watered down and tasted like sparkling water. I expected more since the menu showed a more elaborate drink, but for $8, I should’ve known. Comment: By far my favorite katsu place in Manhattan. Used to come here a lot when my office was located in the city but didn’t have a chance to visit during past couple years.Fried batter for the suface of the katsu here is super crispy, meat inside is so juicy and tender, the sauce with sesame well enhances the taste of the katsu, last but not least; salad balances well with the katsu and helps me more dive into the katsu. Juicy rice is a great bonus.I also recommend oyster katsu if you aren’t hater of oyster. It has different type of pleasure than usual pork katsu. When I tried chicken katsu here recently though, I really didn’t like it. It had some weird distinct smell. Im for sure not having that again. One more note is that the place is bit small and dark. I didn’t realize it in the past and still does not bother me at all even now. But it could be a minus factor for someone who is sensitive to the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Comment: About a 20 min wait to sit for lunch at 1215. Got the chicken and pork curry special, and it was delish. Perfectly crunchy and juicy. Can’t wait to go back.

Comment: My friend and I started with oyster fries and takoyaki. I couldnt really taste the octopus in the takoyaki because it was covered in tonkatsu sauce and mayo, but the oyster fries were amazing! Definitely a must if you like oysters. Then, we both ordered the Berkshire pork loin cutlet with curry over rice. Its definitely up there for pork cutlets, but I thought the pork might have been a little too fatty and the skin too overdone. I think I prefer a bit less color on the crispy skin. The curry was delicious👌

Comment: It was ok, the chicken is good and the crab cake was good too.. I felt like it was missing something, like a sauce or something.

Comment: Excellent katsu here. I love their curry katsu! Appetizers are also delicious but pricey for the portion size. Beer is cheap though.

Comment: My friends frequent this place for a nice sit down dinner whenever were in the city. Staff is really nice, food is great and comes in great portions Everything they serve really complements the fried food. Would definitely recommend the special katsu they have if its your first time.

Comment: I sat at the counter, which is before the rest of the restaurant, so I cant speak to the interiors ambience, but it was what I expected of a place selling katsu. The flavors are familiar, from the pork to the cabbage salad dressing. I didnt partake, but the cabbage and rice were on free refills if you had ordered one of the sets.

Comment: Very authentic katsu with quality pork. I would dish out the extra fee dollars for the Berkshire pork katsu. It was delicious. Super juicy and tender. Breading was not too oily. I would use the katsu sauce on the side, it has a pretty strong flavor that may overpower the taste of the katsu. Would def come back here to try other menu items.

Comment: Comparing this to katsu from Asia, its not amazing. But it is still relatively good though and decently priced. The normal pork loin was a bit marbled but the breading was good. Id recommend going with the berkshire.Green tea ice cream with green tea cheesecake was fantastic though!

Comment: Great little hole-in-the-wall spot for comfort food. It is usually quiet. I last visited on a Friday afternoon/evening, and the place was jam packed. Good food, great curry. The karaage could be better, but wasnt bad.

Comment: Good value curry dishes. I especially enjoyed the cabbage and dressing with potato salad. Chicken curry and soup excellent. Saki selection was great. Go with the A set add on for curry with all the fixings and enough for left overs. Nice fresh flavor!

Comment: This is a really good Japanese restaurant for katsu. I ordered the Bershire Pork Loin Katsu Don with the B set. It was really good. Very tasty. The Katsu was a thick cut of pork loin. Despite being fried, it was still very juicy and cooked perfectly. The egg was cooked nicely too. The whole don had a nice harmony to it. Very delicious. The miso soup and salad was good but pretty standard. Highly recommended Katsu restaurant.

Comment: You can get very authentic Japanese Katsus in reasonable price. Ive visited many places(like Ootoya)for the Katsu and this place is the best by far. Cabbage salad and miso soup refills are free. Service is nice.

Comment: Crispy Japanese comfort food. Crunchy delight paired with miso soup and cabbage salad with ginger dressing. Also have various toppings at the table. Wait times are high at meal times so recommend an early visit. Pork based fried cutlet is the famous dish but they also have non pork and non fried options.

Comment: If you have a craving for true Japanese Katsu, I would definitely recommend Katsu-Hama. I order the Pork Katsu Curry Soba, and was treated with the giant bowl pictured. I order the smaller size and even though Im a big eater, I struggled to finish 2/3rds of it.The Katsu was all things it should be. Crunchy batter with a delicious seasoning, but doesnt over power the pork, which was juicy and tender. The curry sauce was very tasty, but the soba was definitely the weakest part of the dish. It was tasty, but I like my soba noodles more firm. I think Ill would go with curry rice instead next time.

Comment: Authentic Japanese tasting katsu, crisply fried with good quality meat. I tried the classic salaryman dish of katsu curry and found the curry was very good too and rich with sliced mushrooms.

Comment: Service was quick and unrushed. I loved the atmosphere and a lot of wood and bamboo furnishing. I had a huge piece of pork along with some udon. Not exceptional but definite delivers what it promises. Would return.
