Comment: I have been eating here for years. There are many ‘highly-rated’ Japanese restaurants in a ten block radius… I’ve tried them all. But for the price, quality and freshness of seafood, Momokawa is tops. The menu has many options from appetizers, oysters, sushi, sashimi, omakase & shabu-shabu. Plus the sake & beer options compliment the authentic cuisine. The well-informed staff are attentive & fun. You will have a great dinner & great evening here.

Comment: I had an amazing evening at Momokawa, a holistic Japanese restaurant lead by Chef Mie Okuda,Chef Okudo, with a degree in Nutrition Science and health education, created a holistic, Japanese culinary experience, based on her Philosophy:“A great meal is not one that just fills you up. A great meal is a journey that returns you to sources of pleasure you may have forgotten, taking you to places you haven’t been before.” Mie Okuda. Chef/OwnerI had an amazing Omakase experience here. An experience that left me so full, I couldn’t eat any more. I know I have to come back and have Momokawa’s raved sukiyaki next time.An amazing holistic Japanese restaurant. I couldn’t recommend it enough.シェフ、本当にありがとう. 🙏

Comment: We got the Tori Kara-Age, pork sukiyaki and beef sukiyaki. The pork sukiyaki was the most impressive of all, the quality of the meat was really good. However the waiter made us a bit stressed because he came and asked us what we wanted to order less than two minutes after we sat down. After we told him we were still looking and we were still waiting for another person, he came again within 5 minutes asking the same thing. When he was sending dishes, he spilled some veggies onto the table and didn’t refill them. All in all, the food is good, but I’m not sure I want to go again because of the service. Of course it could be just that particular waiter that we ran into gave us the bad experience.

Comment: Momokawa is a cozy restaurant out of heavy foot traffics way on 1st avenue. My friend and I ordered the sukiyaki set for two with prime ribeye and the sushi combo. The sukiyaki was the star of the show. The broth was sweet and savory, while the veggies and meat were super fresh. The sushi combo was decent, but nothing outstanding in my opinion. Some of the fish, like the tuna seemed a little tired out and dull. The drinks were good. The toki highball was refreshing and lemon is always a great touch for it.Overall, I would come back again for their sukiyaki and great service.

Comment: Momokawa is located on First Ave in the Upper East Side with notably the best Sukiyaki in town. Chef and owner Mie Okuda has a bachelors of science in nutrition science and in the works of a masters in health education. This can arguably be the best combination. Kirin and Suntory draft beers accompanied with their sake appetizers is one way to start your journey here. Their seasonal menu has some delicious authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi that you definitely must try. A pre-oiled cast iron pot on top of a butane stove is set for the miyazaki sukiyaki. It comes with an order of udon or rice to pair with the delicious thinly sliced Miyazaki A5 ribeye. Simmer it in the sukiyaki broth and dip it in the whisked egg for the full experience. The Wagyu immediately melts in your mouth leaving you the most satisfying sensation. Don’t forget to cleanse your taste buds with their mouth watering desserts.

Comment: I was craving for Sukiyaki and found this place as one of the most authentic place for it in NYC. We ordered Wagyu Sukiyaki and it didn’t disappoint. Obviously doesn’t live up to the standard of what you will get in Japan, (for example, sukiyaki sauce was rather thinner) but considering that you are in NY, this is probably as good as it gets. The volume of meat was perfect, since fatty meat can fill you up quickly. I wish to have more tofu and veggies, if possible. We also got Toro-taku roll and natto roll - Heaven!Aburi-buri salad is underwhelming, so I advise to skip it.Overall, it satisfied my Sukiyaki cravings very well.

Comment: To be honest, the food is decent but it is just not that impressive as I thought (when reading others sharing). Also they charge 20% tips by default, BUT, in my opinions, it doesn’t match up to the standard of 20% service fee.

Comment: I had the wagyu sukiyaki. Tender and delicious. The staff was kind and considerate which is always a big tell of what a good restaurant would be like. The food was delicious, staff was super attentive and there was a lot of ownership both in their craft and their customer service. There was a lot of attention to detail with the food presentation too.The cost was very good compared to everything else I was trying out in NYC. Definitely a must try and this would be my favorite restaurant to eat once a day for future visits. I would try everything else they have next time and plan to only eat there for the lunch and dinner.

Comment: Amazing experience at Momokawa. The interior of the restaurant was decorated very well with a calm atmosphere. Ordered Kumamoto oysters to start, and the sauce was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever had. Paired with the oyster and lemon, I highly recommend trying these here. The sukiyaki was also so delicious with delicate flavors. Service was extremely attentive and kind. Will have to try the omakase menu next for my next visit.

Comment: Momokawa is recommended by the chef at yakitori toreinshi so I wanted to try it out. Their signature material is the wagyu beef, and you can get it in a Don rice bowl, shabu shabu, or sukiyaki. They recommended the sukiyaki but personally I found the soy sauce base to be too salty and it detracts from the flavors of the wagyu. Thus I would recommend the shabu shabu or the rice Don. The rice Don is salty as well but it is pretty affordable for some wagyu goodness. I would definitely recommend momokawa. One negative that prevents this place from being S tier is the service. Our waiter started to cook for us but never came back, we were left wondering if we are supposed to take it out and or wait for the waiter. Oysters were not good.

Comment: For Japanese delicious food lovers, Mookawa is a great choice. All the dishes that we ordered were excellent, the balance between flavors was as it shuold be and the way of serving was pleasing to the eye.A particularly tasty dish was the beef don, which we enjoyed so much so we ordered on more. The restaurant gives you a full value for money.Warmly recommended.

Comment: Wow the fish!!!! Seriously, Momokawas sushi is an incredible value for the freshness and quality you get with each cut. They even include toro in the Sushi Regular (for < $30)!Its not omakase level, but its absolutely the best sushi you can get at the low/medium price range in the UES. If youre used to specialty rolls and budget-takeout sushi, please do yourself a favor and get sushi at Momokawa -- fish is supposed to taste fresh and flavorful!

I am please to report that after tying this location it’s as wonderful as the one we knew. Our go-to is the shabu-Shabu which is ample food unless you are really hungry.I can’t say enough about how true Japanese everything is. Such a great place when you can’t spare the time to fly to Tokyo.

Comment: My best shabu shabu spot in Manhattan. Highest quality meats are served in a traditional fashion. Very large slices of meats are really enjoyable as I could feel my mouth full and the various tastes (including fat portion) just in a bite. Ive never seen any other shabu shabu comes with such large slices. Btw, its also served in the simplest way (no twist) but its the quality of meat and ingredients that makes it stand out! Conclusively, its my best shabu shabu ever!

Comment: Great Japanese food in UES. Though they have Sushi in their name, sushi is not their only specialty. I have tried their beef sukiyaki before and that was both fun to cook and delicious to eat. Their small beef hot pot was only $12 but very filling (I ate it with a bowl of rice ordered separately). The beef soup is rich and full of beef flavor. As for the appetizers, Saba (grilled fish) was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Tofu (with uni) was firm and has a surprisingly good sesame flavor. Rice cake in the dessert was bouncy and chewy and fun to eat.Overall a great place to enjoy good Japanese food.
