Comment: A large selection of delicious, fresh onigir! I highly recommend the shiso and spam tamago. Cant go wrong with a classic umeboshi or salmon flake, though.Theres a small convenience store inside and a ramen shop that boasts some pretty delicious ramen. They also sell bentos of varying types and sizes that are equally tasty.

Comment: Amazing little shop with a nice selection of Onigiri to go. I decided to pick up the eel and spicy tuna. The eel was so much better than I was expecting! They also have plenty of roll selections if you’re looking for something a bit more filling. The location is perfect for grabbing a quick bite to run to grand central.

Comment: Can’t believe I found Omusubi Gonbei in Manhattan while shopping at the Japanese grocery store, I used to go to Edge Water NJ to get Omusubi Gonbei. Loved the rice and the nori, my favorite is the eel and I tried the natto first time which is also good. Love this place and would come back again!

Comment: UPDATE: Super glad to say that after three years I was able to visit this establishment again and devour the unagi onigiri that I have been dreaming of since my last trip. During my five days in New York, I visited Omusubi Gonbei three times and oh my have I never been happier - looking forward to coming again soon ;)!-Went here during the summer and I just cant forget how amazing the unagi onigiri I ate here was! Really considering flying back to New York just to visit this place again. The staff were super nice and friendly as well!

Comment: I was shocked by how good the rice balls were and karaage chicken and how filling it is. The fried chicken was so darn good. Even when slightly cold it was so delicious. I got the eel and spam rice ball with hot chicken kaarage. I really wanted to try the ramen, but the shop was closing. The store is amazing with so many food options. Def a cool place to check out.

Comment: I did not even know that katagiri and Omusunbi Gonbei were separated. I have the plain, the oyster and the shrimp tempura. I love the chicken spicy or not. I also buy the sushi or sashimi. I gravitate between katagiri and SunRise both in 41st one between 5th and Madison and the later between park and Lexington.

Comment: Ive been here a few times through multiple visits as a tourist and the Bomb would be my favorite for the size, price, and flavor. The amount of fish in the eel, spicy tuna, and salmon omusubis are very small compared to the amount of rice given. I also prefer if they provided double layer packing so that the seaweed sheets are fresh and allow you to wrap them yourself since not everyone can be there during lunch.

Comment: Inside Katagiri, is Omusubi Gonbei. In the front of the shop is their collection of packed onigiri. That day I picked two spicy tuna and a shrimp tempura onigiri. Each rice ball averages about $2-3. Aside from the handmade onigiri, the store has other premade meals and ramen to order. The store itself is full of kinds of items ranging from a large assortment of cup noodles, spices, sauces, snacks, cooked, frozen, and grab and go meals. There is a small dining area near the ramen area. Overall really good and affordable sushi and onigiri.

Comment: Quick and easy pick up of rolls. They ranged from $2-4, and are fairly rice heavy but pretty much what you expect for that price point. We got the bomb, eel and fried oysters.I wished they packed some soy sauce or dip of sorts to help with the huge amount of rice but overall I would definitely recommend and go back. They also have a great sushi section in the back!

Comment: I had been craving Onigiri for years. 5 Years to be exact and I was not willing to give in to just any place that served rice balls. On a whim, I gave this place a try and was not only surprised but I was absolutely floored.Their selection of konbini food is like nothing Ive experienced in the US. Theres both sweet and savory. They have a supermarket section full of all the ingredients that youll never find in the international sections of your local grocery store. And not just that, but you can find the ingredients at an affordable price. For example my local grocery sells oyster sauce for $6 a bottle in Brooklyn. I can get a better brand, in a larger size, for nearly half the price here. Now the food. It was both delicious and filling. Ive seen other reviews of people talking about coming here to pick up things on their lunch break and I wish I could be so lucky to have this place near my work.I bought the fish cakes, the bomb, the salmon, and shrimp onigiri. The fish cakes were my absolute favorite and Im going back tomorrow to stock up. I did see another reviewer saying he did not like these and I can say that it definitely comes down to taste preference. I loved them. If youre not a fan of sweet dont get them, but they are not crazy sweet. If youve had General Tsos, it not nearly as sugary. Just a different taste profile for fish if youre an American. I also love ginger and the ginger was definitely coming to the front of taste. The Onigiri was a mixed bag but not at all bad. My least favorite was the salmon. Still great but not the best of the bunch. I wouldnt call it underfilled but I would have preferred a bit more filling. The shrimp onigiri was my favorite. No complaints at all and the pyramid shape was perfect for dunking in a sauce (if you want to).The bomb which are large super stuffed rice balls were great too. If youre in a rush and just need one thing, id recommend this. It was filling and delicious.

Comment: Inside Katagiri, shortly put, a Japanese bodega, but in truth, a Japanese food aficionado goldmine, lies OMUSUBI GONBEI! Where one can find handmade rice balls of a variety, packed full with salmon, plum, or other staple flavors from Japan. One of their speciality is the Spam Omusubi, a MUST HAVE. They also have this veggie fry topping, that was out of this world! Aside from the handmade rice balls, omusubi, this little shop, Katagiri, is PACKED FULL w all kinds of items ranging from a large assortment of cup noodles, spices, sauces, snacks, cooked, frozen, and grab-n-go delights spanning a whole range of taste buds. You are sure to find what you need here. As one who grew up in Japan, this place is a life saver.

I ordered three! 😳 There were a lot of other options when I checked at 4PM, but when I went back after my shopping trip around 7PM they were basically cleared out of everything else! So definitely do not wait if you see something you like. From what I saw, the average price was around $2.10 - $4.10 which is very reasonable for the size. I wish I lived closer to one of these marketplaces so I could try more!!

Comment: I got the spam musubi and the salmon bomb. Both of them were so flavourful. The musubi was the perfect balance between the salty spam and the slightly sweet egg... with the rice just bringing it all together beautifully. The bomb had a spicy salmon and tuna center that was super delicious but I would have liked some more to be packed into it because I did have a few bites where I got only rice. Despite that this was one of the best grab n go lunches Ive had.

Comment: The food is excellent in terms of Japanese cuisine.I had the seafood bowl and the rice wasnt just some basic cooked white ric sometimes they give you. The octopus, fish etc were fresh. And the price was amazing for NYC! I had a dessert on the picture no idea od the name. Thought it would be some kind of Donuts with custard filling but was actually closer to France chouquette in terms of texture and everything .We went around 6pm after work to talk and it was calm 😌 which i liked a lot. My friend only eats halal so since most of the food is seafood based she had a blast.

Comment: A comfortable neighborhood fixture.I work in Bryant Park. If Im lazy, I go to Kinokinuya, which has a small Cafe Zaiya selection thats perfectly servicable in a pinch. With a little more time, I walk a few aves over to Sunrise Mart, where the selection is much better. But when time is on my side and I feel like a stroll, I reward myself with a walk over to the Omusubi Gonbei, which is the best place of the Japanese grocery/food stores around here. The onigiri and eponymous omusubi are great, but sushi is respectable too. Ive been partial to the triple layer packaging that keeps the seaweed crispy, but Im starting to get fond of the homestyle kind in saran wrap, even though its softer. If your commute takes you past Grand Central, damn you, you are lucky.

Comment: Great place for a snack or lunch if you need, since it is located within a Japanese grocery. Focusing specifically on the onigiri, it is at the front of the store, very close quarters. You pick what you want and then pay for it at the register. They have a lot of options for regular rice, and less for white rice. There are also grab-and-go options on top of the counter.I bought the brown rice salmon, white rice chashu, and white rice karaage. The salmon was cooked, which I wasnt used to since the salmon in Yayas rice balls are raw. It had a nice coating of toasted sesame seeds.Chashu musubi had well flavored rice but not that much meat. The focus is on the rice, I guess. The karaage was my favorite, as it had a good amount of meat and rice proportionally. The meat was also still tender and the ball was warm when I picked it up.The prices were also pretty good considering how filling rice is. I will probably be back in the future for other pickings.

Comment: Really cool Japanese supermarket with a great shop up front selling all sorts of onigiri and musibi. There is also a ramen shop in the back of the store, totally legit ramen, gyudon, etc.Great place to duck in, grab a tea, some onigiri and have a bowl of ramen and sit down on a stool, all this right in the middle of midtown Manhattan.

Comment: This is the spot to stop by for a quick snack or pick up meal. I usually get their onigiri (spicy tuna or salmon). For dinner I stop by 30 mins before they close to get 30% off hot meals, I like their gyudon. Very small but pack with everything I need. Occasionally will get their desserts: warabi mochi, dango, and anything new I want to try. Nice ladies at the check out.Edit: they share a space with katagiri grocery store.

Comment: I have only one regret for this place- that I did not discover it sooner!!!! Came here for takeaway lunch with 5 co workers. The selection of onigiri, fresh sushi, ramen etc is amazing. The spicy karaage was FANTASTIC ( pro tip- grab a side of spicy mayo for dipping), as was the seaweed salad. Also, everything here is VERY reasonably priced. I can’t wait to come back and try more!

Comment: Really amazing onigiri! Absolutely delicious, well seasoned, and a nice amount of filling. They have a ton of flavor options. Each ball is $2-$3 so it’s very cheap compared to some other onigiri I have tried in the city. It’s inside a grocery store which also has hot and cold Japanese food, so if you’re in the mood for it then this is the place to go!

All ingredients tasted very clean and fresh with the “bomb” onigiri being my favorite packed with a combo of veggies and fish. Will def be back to try more of these affordable treats from the pickup counter strategically placed at the entrance. Cheers, Gonbei!

Comment: I frequent the NJ location fairly regularly and was pleased to find the same business place in the city. This location offers a great number of different rice balls and taste is consistent and fresh. One super minor gripe is there is no consistency to the size. In general, they tends to be smaller than the ones in NJ. The NJ location also has consistent size across all rice ball types. In the NYC location, it is easy see a pretty wide variation in size. Other than that, they have a great product and great service!

Comment: Superlatives do not describe how good (and cheap!) this is for midtown. The rice balls (particularly the bomb) are delicious and filling. The rice (which is the most important part of Onigiri) is absolutely fantastic. This is not sushi. The rice is not vinegared and the ratio of rice to filling is supposed to be muvh higher. If you want sushi, go somewhere else. And the karaage (which is sold out by 1 without fail) is the best fried chicken of any kind in NYC.

Comment: Note this is inside the Japanese grocery store Katagiri on 41st street.A no-frills onigiri bar which serves a large variety to choose from. My recent selections have included spicy tuna, eel, shrimp tempura, and pork. All are priced around $3 each (some more, some less) which makes ordering 2 or 3 for lunch cost only about $6-9.
