Comment: The food at Ootoya was AMAZING!!!! I got the sukiyaki set and I have absolutely no complaints! All of the sides and the rice options paired perfectly with the dish! I got the curry rice and was surprised by how well it paired with the sukiyaki beef.

Comment: Finally some real KatsuDon in NYC… but with a NYC price tag. In Japan, this lunch would have been $15. Here… $45. Downside of living in America. But the food was proper and delicious. They should do no tipping to really make it Japanese.

Comment: This has to be one of my go to/favorite Japanese restaurant. For appetizers, I recommend their potato croquette and the Chawanmushi. For an entrée, I usually get, either, the grilled cod (Gindara Miso), the chicken Katsu or the Katsu Toji set. I highly recommend the grilled cod fish set; it is delicious. The food and the service has always been great at this location.

Comment: This is a better Ootoya location. The service was wonderful as the other locations in the City although they forgot our credit card for a very long time. The place offers omakase at this location, which has a location only menu. There is a counter seating all the way in the back which is fun for after work. Food is decent, and I will not brag about it.

Comment: This place is my go-to comfort Japanese food. You cant go wrong with anything you order here. I especially liked the salmon nabe soup and the pork katsu. If youre feeling a bit adventurous, try the matcha curry with chicken thigh! The matcha curry is mild. Not your typical curry but the chicken thigh was cooked to perfection. Crispy skin and tender meat. Highly recommend!

Comment: Will definitely come back!! I loved the dessert! Not too sweet. Perfect miso soup. First time eating crunchy sushi. They kept falling apart but that was ok. The yuzu cocktail was a very pleasant surprise. I loved the politeness of the stuff, it felt like the authentic Japanese service.

Comment: I had the Bara Charashi Don which I really enjoyed. The fish is decently fresh. Some items on their menu seemed overpriced, for example, their crispy rice nigiri. For appetizers, we tried the Karaage, Signature Chili Shrimp Gyoza Dumplings, and some torched salmon nigiri. The appetizers were all good and tasty, but nothing too special. Of the ones we tried, our favorite was the Chili Shrimp Gyozas. Their dessert is pretty food for the price, and if their mochi is on the menu, I highly recommend you try it if you want a dessert that has a subtle sweetness. Their alcohol menu also has some great options. We loved all the drinks we tried!

Comment: Went for lunch and it wasn’t too crowded on a weekday. Ideally try to make a reservation as there can be a wait up to 20 mins if you don’t have one. Had the katsu toji with matcha amitsu for dessert. Been going there for years and consistency is always there. Service was good and waitress will keep topping up water once glass was half empty.

Comment: This place was good, our first time here. We came in on Saturday around 8:20. We were sat at the hightop bar that overlooked the kitchen. For an appetizer we ordered dumplings but it came out with our meals which was disappointing since it is an appetizer. The servers were attentive but this was a definite oversight given what felt like an upscale place. The food was delicious though. The shrimp dumpling was the better of the two but neither was bad. I had nigiri with a sushi roll which was excellent. My wife had salmon Tonyu Nabe (not pictured). This was really good as well. She got Hijiki seaweed rice to accompany it. I was preferable to my meal but would definitely go back based on either. I had ordered a seasonal watermelon sparkling sake drink (which was great) initially then switched to beer. My wife started with beer. I asked to get a pitcher for us after my first drink since it seemed like the cost effective choice and our server laughed. I didn’t mind but might not be in the best taste for some people. Seemed like 2 or 3 beers equivalent size wise. It was nice that they serve you tea at the end of the meal.I would definitely recommend this place and go back.

Comment: Ootoya Chelsea provided a wonderful backdrop for our mixed group dinner. The service was commendable and the food arrived hot and swiftly, a sure sign of well-synchronized kitchen magic. The star of the show was their fresh sashimi. My friends were simply enamored by the array of beautifully cut, melt-in-your-mouth morsels of seafood. It was clear Ootoya Chelsea didn’t skimp on the quality of their ingredients. For me, the standout was the hot pot, specifically the Kaasan Ni. Picture a breaded and deep-fried chicken cutlet and onion, garnished with Japanese grated radish and a poached egg, all swimming in a delicately flavored soy sauce broth. It was akin to a Japanese version of a hearty onion soup and left me satisfyingly full.Ootoya Chelsea offers a delightful dining experience with delicious food and good service. Its a perfect place to satisfy your Japanese cuisine cravings and share a meal with friends or family.

Comment: People need to realize that Ootoya is basically the Panera of Japan. They dont even have sushi at Ootoya in Japan. The experience here is Panera-level Japanese food marked up for Manhattan.Because Japanese food in the NY area is so reliably bad and inauthentic, and because Ootoya in general isnt bad, this gets 4 stars from me. The food really is nothing special at all.The service was very nice and the atmosphere is surprisingly nice. Not sure why they call this location Chelsea. Chelsea seems too far away!

Comment: 4.5 / 5.0 - Ootoya is one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in the city. In Japan, it is known as more of a casual chain, but in NYC, it is more upscale and the atmosphere is more sophisticated. This week, I went with my bf for date night and had a lovely dinner. We both ordered the Ootoya Classic Gozen ($42+), which was pricey but came with a variety of tasty dishes.- Choice of sushi (Salmon Oshizushi, Salmon Avocado Roll or Unagi Cucumber Roll)- Ootoya original soba noodles with sea urchin- Silky homemade tofu with salmon roe- Crispy herb pork tonkatsu with fresh cabbage- Grilled Japanese butterfish marinated with soy sauce and koji- Yuzu daikon picklesFor sushi, I chose the Salmon Avocado Roll, but would recommend the Salmon Oshizushi, which my bf ordered. It wasnt as much food as wed expected, but it was nice to be able to try a bit of everything.Pre-pandemic, Ootoya had been a no-tipping restaurant, but it seems that has changed now. It was nice that at the end of the meal, they served us tea.Hope to be back again soon.

Comment: A little pricey (but gratuity is included in the price) and good, simple clean flavors.Food:- Chicken thigh - $5.5 very moist tender meat in soy sauce. They use a special fork for the skewer. It came with black pepper on the sideMeal set:- Salmon sushi roll - Thin slices of salmon on top of inside out roll. Inside has avocado and cucumber. Topped with mayo and salmon roe. - a very thick roll youll need 2 or 3 bites to finish. The rice was very good and the salmon fresh.- Egg custard - delicious mouth feel - very soft and fine with a bit of a lightly sour sauce on top- Soba - cold style with dipping sauce on side- Miso soup - with thin slices of radish and carrot, bits of meat, scallion, bonito - very nice- Shima Hokke grilled fish - tasty and a good sized portion but youll need to pick out bones while you eat this- Butterfish grilled fish - tasty but a smaller portionApps:- Tofu salad with bonito - a layered bowl of salad, a layer of tofu then topped with a lot of bonito flakes, and some dressing on the side. - not bad but I think Ill stick to the tofu with salt next time for appetizerService:- Hot towel to start- Hot tea to finish- Service very good and friendlyIf you do takeout, you can order directly on their site and get a disocunt. The packaging is done well.

Comment: Loved the interior. I reserved for a 12pm slot on Saturday and it was quite empty since it just opened at 11:30am. Probably another 30 minutes and the restaurant was filled.I had the tonkatsu set (my absolute favorite) and my partner ordered the Salmon tonyu nabe set. Both dishes were delightful, light crispy battered pork cutlets paired well with the Ootoya wafu vegetable dressing. I liked the salmon roe over my rice with a nice little umami burst in each bite. The salmon tonyu nabe was yummy with a flavorful broth. The service was fantastic and also gave us edamame on the house since on of the dishes took a while to cook. Interior decor was pleasant would bring friends and family here for any special occasion.

Comment: Very much appreciated their understanding when we were unexpectedly delayed at a local attraction. Side note, Don’t waste your time at the Friends experience nearby. The food was tasty. My only complaint was The service of the food and the attitude of our waitress. She disappeared after taking our order, not to be seen again until the end of the meal. Each item was brought to the table, one piece at a time. There was no order of service of an appetizer, entree and then dessert. They all hit the table one piece after another in rapid fire succession completely disregarding the fact that my daughter was the birthday girl being served last for each of her ordered items. Her friends enjoyed a hot meal much earlier than she, as we continuously waited for her food or fork. They were extremely attentive to her fathers meal in bringing everything to him first including the check. How old school of them when he had nothing to do with the reservation which was made by myself with the manager of the restaurant days beforehand. Would try this restaurant again before trying to attend any attractions nearby.

Comment: One of the nicest Ootoya locations. It doesn’t get much more Japanese than Ootoya. This is a very big chain restaurant in Japan where I would always have lunch. The American Ootoya is a more upscale experience than the Japanese ones, but the quality of the food is, and always has been high. The Tonkatsu is so tasty and flavorful and maybe the best I had since being in Japan.

I love every single dish in this set, staring from the uni tofu appetizer to the unagi bowl, the sukiyaki and the three different kinds of grilled fish, and finishing with the sweet crown melon. Comment: Went during the restaurant week and the place was relatively less busy than we thought it might be. We couldn’t order the restaurant week menu though due to dietary restrictions. We got the crispy rice sushi, shishito peppers, kaasan ni (chicken hot pot), tori koruzu an along with chocolate nigori and hot wine. The food was okay. Shishito peppers were not as well salted as we prefer. We probably didn’t order the correct dishes. It is a bit expensive but after leaving a tip we realized it’s a no tipping restaurant, which makes the prices reasonable. The vibe of the restaurant was quite nice.

Comment: With outdoors dining, I ordered washu beef sukiyaki nabe set and a cup of hot tea for the cold weather. I was starving and the food came quickly. Everything on the serving tray for my set was delicious. I also ordered the steamed egg as part of the set which came in later. The price was reasonable for a variety of food. It was very filling. Definitely would come back again to try other items on their menu.

Comment: Their lunch set is huge especially if you order all the extra components. Had the sukiyaki, homemade tofu, croquette, katsu don, steak don, karaage, and gyoza. Sukiyaki was really good. Katsu don was a bit bland. Steak don was good. Karaage, croquette, udon, soba are all pretty standard. Gyoza was cold and not tasty. Tofu had a strange texture, not my cup of tea. Their desserts are good too - love the yuzu jelly component and the matcha pudding.

Comment: Updated Review 10/19/2021 -This place is one of my go-tos in NYC and will take friends or co-workers here if we didn’t have anything else in mind. Ootoya always delivers high quality and delicious fish from the cooked dishes to the sushi/sashimi dishes. They make their tofu in house so I would recommend trying it if you like tofu. Depending on where you sit, you can see the machine that makes the tofu!I usually get a noodle set because I really like their soba. I get a katsu or chirashi bowl with soba and depending on how hungry I will also add more food into the set. I love how customizable the meal is and how it’s served on a tray with all the items that you selected. I LOVE their soba so much, cold and hot are both really really good.Come Again? Yes yes yes! I’ve come here countless times already. For me it is on the pricer end for a meal but I know when I come here I will have a good time and good food!----------------------------------------------------Old Review (3 Years ago in 2018) -Ive been here several times and I keep coming back! A great place in the city for yummy and quality Japanese food. The sushi sets with soba are my favorite because it gives you a little taste of everything. Also if you like tofu, definitely try the homemade tofu- it is delicious! Try to aim to go early (when they open) since there is usually a wait around noon or after. Ive waited several times and it usually isnt too bad though.

Comment: I ordered their five piece karaage (fried chicken) and seiro udon (the noodles are served cold with a dipping sauce). the chicken came out piping, burn-your-mouth hot. the meat was extremely tender and the breading was the right amount. i recommend squeezing the lemon and adding some soy sauce to it to enhance the flavor. the udon was probably one of (if not “the”) best udon noodles i’ve tasted here so far. the mouthfeel was incredible—extremely smooth/slippery with a chewy bounce to the noodle. the dipping sauce was also very tasty. i would love to come back to try their hot udon with soup as well as their soba noodles. highly recommend.

Comment: I’ve consistently had great experiences at Ootoya, but this was my first visit post-COVID.We easily made dinner reservations for outside, and they were accommodating of some last minute changes to our party size.I ordered the miso katsu, which was delicious, and my friend got the salmon teishoku. She really loves that they carry Echigo beer, which is rice based, since she is gluten-free.Service was good, considering staff has to pay attention to both inside and outside, and appreciated the hand sanitizer at each table.Ootoya is a reliable option if you are looking for Japanese food outside of the standard ramen/sushi etc.

Comment: This place was pretty tasty but a little off on the taste for cost ratio.First the piece of tuna sushi I had, it was good, but at $6 a piece, it wasn’t leagues better then something I might find for half the price or maybe even less. The Mini Potato Croquette was tasty but was too filled with beef that I didn’t taste much of the potato. The main entree of the tonkatsu curry was not bad but I would have preferred if the curry was a tad thicker. The black sesame ice cream was very tasty though. Had a great sesame taste that was rich and natural.

When I was finishing my meal, a rat a few feet away, climbed up on a chair to grab some food that was left behind. I know this New York, but the outdoor dining area must he kept very clean to discourage rodents.

Comment: This restaurant in the city may present some parking challenges so I would tell you to avoid driving in the city as much as possible unless you like to spend a lot of money in parking. As we came in my friend told me that they here do not take tips, that they pay their staff enough so they dont need to be tipped, I am not sure about that cause I did not ask but if anyone who reads this has any idea on how this works please leave me a DM I would love to know more. They also only have an additional restaurant in the city and another in Japan, so there are 3 total. As we came in we were lucky case they didnt have reservations at the time cause it was ned their mid afternoon closing but it seems like they get pretty busy so it would be wise to not do like me and make a reservation before coming. The host no matter where they are from they will greet you in Japanese and so all the staff in the restaurant as you enter as well as all will say farewell in Japanese when you leave, that was a nice touch in my opinion. The decor here is dark and simple, it is a very cold but at the same time well thought out decoration for sure. I cant say this is a sexy or romantic atmosphere cause I did not fell that way but it is well decorated.POT STICKERS - we got a couple of them and they were good, made as usual and not much different than the usual you can see anywhere you go for this specialty of food.EHO- MAKI ROLL- so this is a roll the is seasonal for a celebration of something and we ordered it but the waiter I guess forgot so we never got it, once we finished our meal we mentioned to him so he could take it out of the check, he asked if we still wanted but we denied as we were all ready for dessert.MINI BOWL:KATSU DON - it was ok cause it comes with the side but in truth this is only good if you will either get a bunch of other small things and appetizers or you not sure about the food and never had it so u dont want to be leaving food behind, but if you do know this dish I would tell you to get the regular size cause the amount of rice and carbs are way too much and the protein here is minimal on the case of a mini bowl.SIDE SOBA- they give you the option of hot or cold Soba, I got the cold cause I was told that it is the best tasting of its kind, and they were not wrong, I loved it, it was pretty nice and sort o fun to be dipping the pasta on the sauce, it was cool. taste wise, it was nothing very special or memorable.ANMITSU- this is a Japanese dessert it seems, I never seen before so I am to sure how popular this is out there, but there is green tea ice reran, some mochi balls, red beans and a sauce to pour on top. it was pretty nice, but again nothing super memorable.I think this place overall had good tasting food, and some of the meals here have great serving sizes if you know what your are going for, so do your research before coming over and make sure to do make a reservation cause with only 2 venues here in the city they can get pretty busy and a table can be a challenge if you do not prepare.I would come back here to try more of their dishes for sure

Comment: Pros#1 Delicious Japanese food#2 Authentic Japanese food. Tastes were so good and spot on#3 Seems pricy but no tipping because their staff gets paid well. So 👍Cons#1 Not a huge serving so you will probably want to add on the side dishes. But you also feel healthy not overeating like most places do...#2 Make a reservation! And then your party must ALL be there to be seated, or your spots will be taken.Of course the pros outweigh the cons and I would love to return to try their food again! Its just so good, and not an overwhelming menu so you know they are cooking those things they know just right.

Comment: Visited Ootoya with a reservation for 6pm. The restaurant was pretty full but the service was attentive. The menu prices were a little bit pricier than I expected but the portion sizes are larger than you would expect so that somewhat balances it out in my opinion. I got the beef negimaki which was really tasty and the scallion and the beef together was excellent. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food very much.Pro tip: all prices include gratuity so there is no need to write in an additional percentage for tip. (Perhaps that accounts for the seemingly higher menu pricing?).

Comment: Good atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was on par with Katsu that I’ve had in Japan. It’s a little on the steep side ($30 for Katsu bowl) and remember that they don’t accept tips (so maybe instead they just factor this into the menu items which makes sense). You can get a seat at the bar pretty quickly if you’re keen to dine without waiting too long of a time.

Comment: The front door is a bit tiny compare to the surrounding building. You can easily miss it especially if you are not paying attention. Luckily we have some very hungry ppl looking out for this.Key thing here is portion to price ratio. I honestly think for the price we arent getting much in quantity but more in quality. For example, the salmon bowl and soba is only enough for about 2 bites if share with four people. We had that as appetizer and I think why in the world we just ate. Portion is a big problem.Since we are here for the quality of food and service, I will say my dinner is amazing. Either this location or one by the Greenwich, their standard doesnt lack. I have a salmon soup with the set. Do you honest need to charge $1 extra for multi grain rice? Is $30+ per entree not enough already? Best of all they dont charge tip but just tax. This is a non tipping restaurant and the service I can say is 5 star all the way. Waiter gave us warm towels, tea and smile.Food is delicious. I wish I ordered the beed soup bowl instead as they have the mushroom I wanted and the broth is out of this world.Do try this a few times and definitely a third or fourth date to place to impress.

My beef sukiyaki was okay, a little bit sweet but overall good. We got their grilled mushroom, chicken breast and chicken thigh. I choose tare over shio as tare is always a safety choice when you visit a nice place, and I was right! I love Japanese cuisine so each bite pulled my heart strings. The only thing I do have to say is the yakitori could be seasoned better and the food could be a lot less sweet. Dessert was what made my dining experience here complete, and probably my favorite part of it, though Im bias since dessert is my favorite. We had potatoes croquettes, omakaee yakitori set, pork tonkatsu and the washuga beef set- totally recommend ordering the washugyu beef set (special)

Comment: The food at Ootoya is great. Quite a mix of sushi bar style of food. No sushi or sushi by pieces though. The price is a bit on the high end not the $$ google have you believe. The no tip policy does make the higher price point more understandable. Definitely should check it out just remember the price is around $$$ range.

Comment: Food was fairly tasty, and the no tip policy is definitely one that should be encouraged more! Service was slightly on the slow side, but still acceptable. (Depending on what you get, you may not be full afterwards)

Comment: You know youll be treated with superb hospitality when you dine at Ootoya! Came on a quiet Monday evening and tried out their seasonal summer menu item which consists of a bento rice and cold udon combo tenshoku. While the wait was oddly long, I was utterly satisfied with the dish with its delicate yet clearly defined flavors and textures.

Comment: Beautifully presented and delicious, the food here is what attracted me. Came in for lunch on a Tuesday and there was no wait for a table for 2. Authentic Japanese feel and reasonable prices, would definitely return!

Comment: The most authentic japanese restaurant I have been to outside of Japan which brings back memories with its serving tray filled with entree in a presentable cultural way. This price is pricey so cant come here as often as I would like.

Comment: A Japanese friend of mine brought me here, she said you eat like youre in Japan. Everything we tried was delicious, its definitely my new favorite Japanese place in Manhattan. I dont usually like tofu but this fresh tofu was amazing, it has completely another flavor, the miso soup was different from every other Ive tried before and was really good, salmon melts in your mouth.I strongly suggest to try it, you wont be disappointed!

Comment: The line for dinner is ridiculous but well worth the wait, plus you can shop around while waiting.I never leave this place with an empty stomach. The food is light and well balanced and portioned, I always leave content. Its also roomy so guest arent on top of each other. There are tables and seats at the sushi bar and cocktail bar.Their steamed egg is so light and creamy - I need to know their secret! That is the only reason I come back time and time again. They offer an array of food from yakitori, sushi to traditional set dinners. I always go for the set dinner, the entree always comes with a multiple of sides which allows me to nibble here and there. Again, did I tell you how much I love their steamed egg!The wait staff here is very knowledgable about their food. On one occasion the wait staff kindly advised me the mackerel I ordered as a set dinner has a lot of little bones in the filet and I should eat cautiously. When the mackerel came out and chewing ever so cautiously - to my surprise the kitchen staff removed all these little bones. The mackerel was delicious, I crave for more as I type.I usually dont opt for desert because I am already full to the brim. One time I ordered the sesame cream brûlée and there was no regret!!

Comment: They only like to start serving if the entire party is present and seated. The portions are all actually quite large for the sets and really filling except for the sushi ones.

Comment: 12 /20/13: This restaurant exceed my expectations. It was truly amazing. When you walk in, the small waiting area is furnished with nice foliage and tapestry. In my case I was there 10 minutes after it opened so I was seated quickly. Everyone greets you and the atmosphere is astounding. I ordered the Oyako Ju which was delicious. This being the first time trying authentic Japanese food, I can say it was incredibly enjoyable.

Comment: Great, reasonably priced menu focusing on Japanese meal sets (entree, rice, pickles, miso soup, veggies, etc) for about $20. Ive read elsewhere that this is the Cheesecake Factory of Japanese cuisine, but if thats the case, the Japanese are very very lucky indeed. The meal sets here are pretty authentic and well balanced. The only downside is they dont take reservations after 6 pm, and when you get there, theyll inevitably quote you a wait time of 60-90 minutes, but usually it ends up being 30-40, so just be patient!

Comment: I came here with my family during the summer after my graduation. We waited in front of the restaurant before opening to guarantee seating. Even though we waited quite a bit, it was definitely worth the wait. The restaurant greatly mimics traditional Japanese restaurants in Japan right down to the lukewarm approach to take out. The food is absolutely delicious no matter what you order. Since I first went, Ive gone back numerous times trying new items on the menu each time. The soba is absolutely perfect . I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Comment: I came here for lunch and had a great experience. I ordered the rib hot pot, which came with a cute lunch set including steamed egg, miso soup, vegetables, and a bowl of rice. The quantity was a lot, especially considering my meal was only ~$15. The ambiance was also great, you can see the chefs cooking. When you walk in, they greet you loudly in Japanese so you feel welcomed. Ill definitely have to check this place out again as there are so many other menu items that looked appetizing.

Comment: My new favorite Japanese restaurant. It is funny to think of it as a chain in Japan, when the food is so great. They have a lot of set meals to choose from, but I have to recommend the grilled fish. The sets come with miso soup, rice, pickled vegetables, and warm egg custard soup. Also, try the in house made tofu appetizers. Great value too.
