Comment: My favorite thing about this place is the experience it brings that is otherwise lacking in NYC. The inside of the restaurant is quiet and serene, and the sets that you can get feel very authentic. The prices are definitely too high, especially considering none of this food is authentic enough to actually be coming from Japan. I enjoyed the food greatly, but it did feel like a Japanese dish made out of American ingredients. I had the ootoya nabe. The broth was flavorful, and most of the ingredients were perfectly cooked and had soaked up the flavor of the soup. My one complaint is that some of the fish pieces had bones in them which made it difficult to eat. I also got the matcha ice cream dessert, which was probably my favorite thing. It’s very small, but perfect after a slightly heavy meal and all the flavors were only slightly sweet which I appreciated. The staff is incredibly attentive and you never need a reservation.

Comment: A large menu with some vegetarian and vegan options! Everything our party had was delicious (udon soup, soba soup, katsu, etc). Id recommend the fresh tofu - I got a small tofu salad to try it and was so impressed! We arrived at 5:55 PM on a Tuesday and was able to get a table for 4 immediately!

Comment: I came here a few minutes after opening and was able to be seated immediately on the counter top (in front of the kitchen, really nice seat), but the tables were already gone. I ordered the tonkatsu curry set for lunch and it was really good, definitely among the best katsu I’ve had in NYC so far despite a few pieces being a bit dry. Overall it was a great experience and I’ll definitely be back!

Everyone was so nice there and I couldnt have asked for a better experience. Weve actually talked about returning here next time were in New York again

Comment: Ootoya is always good- consistent and with great portions, and always tasty. They offer most items as part of a set that you can configure, and highlights include the miso cod, the katsu, the matcha ranch, and the hijiki. I’ve been to an Ootoya in Tokyo and I will say that the Ootoyas in NYC are better. Ootoya is one of my spots whenever I’m back in NYC and I’ve been going since 2013!

Comment: I came here with a friend and I got the katsu toji with udon noodles and my friend got the eel with rice and udon noodle soup. We both noticed that the interior of the restaurant is really nice and clean. The food came out pretty fast and everything was pretty good but not amazing for the price.Im not really sure if I would come back - maybe if I had no other options. And thats not because this place wasnt good, but because there are so many other japanese food options in the city.

Comment: Superior Japanese food with awesome service but have trouble accessing menu online and the individual seat near kitchen kinda have the rotten smell(not pleasant)Phone has bad reception inside the restaurant, even thought there is free Wi-Fi provided, still a bit of troublesome.Third time here, everything I tried so far are all had superior quality and taste! Steak Ju is very juicy, and dessert has layers of flavor. Finally, tip suggested are before tax, very nice.

Comment: In my ideal city, there would be an Ootoya in a quiet park. Eating the savory, melty butterfish was like getting a hug on my tongue. My partner tried the tonkatsu curry, which was sweet, savory, and filling. The homemade tofu is tangy and almost like.. yogurt maybe? We both agreed that the pickled veggies and fresh miso soup were so calming. The lemon amakase mocktail was so delicious, with the lemon Moshi soda being a good runner-up. I would not recommend the matcha strawberry Moshi, but thats not made by Ootoya, so its no knock against them. Service is very attentive and fast, especially considering how busy they were, and the interior is all natural wood. If you need an onigiri afterwards, you can get one at the window outside Ootoya! I felt so happy here. Thank you for your beautiful food, Ootoya. ❤️

Comment: I came here one day after the gym. I was starving and this was on my way to the train station. Food was good, service felt very rushed. I received my bill as I was still chewing. The whole interior felt very dark. I wouldn’t mind coming here again for a quick bite, but this is not the kind of place to hang out with your friends and chitchat for 2-3 hours over food and drinks. The chawanmushi was very light and not commonly found in a lot of Japanese restaurants in the area, so I was pretty happy when I saw it on the menu. It did not disappoint. Shishito peppers had a good mix of spicy vs non spicy. The crispy rice sushi was surprisingly good. I added two orders of salmon sashimi and it came out together with the chawanmushi. The Yuzu White Peach Moshi sparkling juice drink was a few times more expensive than the price I saw in a nearby Japanese market, but I know the restaurant has to pay rent too, so I expected the pricing.

Comment: I have been to Ootoya several times in Japan. I think this restaurant is a high-end restaurant in the style of Ootoya. The menu provided is also limited compared to Japan, and everything is a little sophisticated. The taste was perfect and reminded me of Japan. The price is high, and one rice ball is 4 dollars and 50 cents. Well, the location is good, so is it unavoidable in NYC?

Comment: This pop-up Onigiri stand is part of Ooyota, and it offers onigiri 🍙 and rolls to go during weekdays (12-2 pm). Don’t walk away if a line exists; it moves fast since the onigiri is pre-made.I got the choices recommended by the staff - sukiyaki, salmon, unagi, and buta shio. They all tasted great and were freshly made. But I honestly couldn’t tell them apart from each other except for the salmon one.

Comment: The Oyako don was seasoned nicely and the Salmon Tonyu Nabe had a creamy / smooth texture while soy milk added depth to taste and salmon added the oil-y and subtle umami.ngl It tasted like a chain restaurant or a home cook who got somewhat professional but not quite there - for the quality of cook on certain elements was obviously off: salmon itself was on the dry side and the eggs of the Oyako don were weirdly overcooked and undercooked at the same time)- as well as the grade? Freshness? Of individual ingredients... but the portion is so big Id still recommend this place lol

They dont take reservations which I can understand because their seats are filled up very quickly during lunch and dinner rush. Comment: This restaurant looks amazing and serves great standard japanese food. The Washu Beef Katsu Donabe Curry, Kaasan Ni, and the Katsu Toji were all great dishes with each of our meats battered and fried nicely. The beef was especially tender. The service was great as well. Prices seem somewhat reasonable for a restaurant like this in Times Square. Only giving it 4/5 stars because it didnt seem exceptional in taste for the price.

They have curry, katsu, sushi, donburi, steak and so much more. The variety is amazing. Best appetizer or add-ons are the onsen eggs, Chawanmushi regular and premium, and the Karaage. Comment: I’ve had Ootoya regularly in Thailand where I came from and in Japan. Needless to say that the quality is consistent everywhere. Here, you can expect good home cook Japanese meals. Nothing complicated. Their service is always fast and reliable. The last few times I went they’ve been serving the entree before the appetizer, so don’t order too much. What I’d always get from here: Sukiyaki nabe, Udon, Katsu Toji. Their homemade tofu is really good tooToo bad they are no longer a no-tipping restaurant but I understand how hard is it during the inflation to keep it that way.

Comment: 茶碗蒸, steam egg..there’s an option if you want plain steam egg / with seafood, such as roe….price is different. The ice cream is very delicious.. I actually order the matcha flavor, but they are out… so black sesame flavor instead..with rice mochi +red 🫘 bean..Sukiyaki, its a soy sauce soup base with different type of vegetables, such as cabbage and beef, so it’s kinda salty to me..and it’s 34dollars? It was served with small portion of salad and miso soup..🚫The restaurant has a rule, adult can’t order from kid menu.. I saw there are small portion of different types of dishes on kid menu, so I want to try it, if I like it, I would order the regular appetizer..but server said NO…

Comment: Definitely a more pricey place for teishoku lunch than Mew. For three people and a cocktail, it was almost 100 bucks for lunch. But the food quality is very good and the portion is well-minded.The decor is almost like a bar at first glance, but further in it is lit to feel more homey and with a classical Japanese feel. The staff were able to be attentive even when it was a pretty busy lunch. We got seated and ordered quickly. The wait for food was better than anticipated, and we didnt even take an hour in there. The food is good. I had the Katsu curry, which came with pickles and salad. The curry was sweet and barely spicy, just like usual Japanese curry. The rice was very well textured and the pork was incredibly crunchy. The salad vinaigrette was surprisingly good as well, having something like sesame oil.Overall, its not a place I would go to all the time for sure. But it is a good find to attend once in a while as a treat!

Comment: Always guaranteed quality, well prepared, and authentic Japanese food. You come here for food, less for service experience or atmosphere. My suggestions are the chirashi bowl, steamed egg is a MUST, and if youre around for lunch, getting the lunch sets are definitely a great deal (for this restaurant, still expect to pay about $30 which can be steep for casual lunch). Theyre known for their hotpots, everything here is a bit on the sweet side, ask your server ahead of time.

Food is excellent here and I tried different things than I normally get. The beef hotpot was the best thing I ate here this time. The crispy rice was good too, first time having it actually, and the pieces were larger than I expected so it filled us up. The egg appetizer was really good too and only $6. The unagi rice was good too but pricey at $41. Dessert only had one item and it was good, a mix of every thing in there!Definitely a great Japanese option if youre in the time Square area!

Comment: The atmosphere matches that of NYC. The busy busboys and waiters rushing back and forth, just like what NYC is. People rushing back and forth. We ordered Washu Beef Sukiyaki Nabe and Steak Ju.The steak is really good, it comes medium rare (the only way to have your steak) and rice with scallions to finish off the decor.I feel that steak Ju isnt worth the 40 bucks. Should be 30. It is good, but for the value and taste, its not 40.The Beef Sukiyaki Nabe is good to have in winter time. Well worth the price. But the broth is way too salty.

I’ve never been in Japan but everything felt like I vas there, the food was totally amazing the tea and miso soup had such a different taste that I didn’t even recognized the flavor I guess it’s more original and super tasty don’t even mention the fish! Thank you guy for the amazing food you make.

Comment: We ordered Washu Beef and pork curry. They tasted very good and tasty. The deep fried pork is very crispy, and I am into it.I arrived at around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, no needed to wait but there was no one at the entrance to meet us.They served me the wrong dish and I did not realize it until I finished the salad and the beef steak. The waiter then realized it as well, and kindly to change it for me. Well, I had to say, I personally did not like the Washu Beef Katsu Donabe Curry Set (attached 1st picture), the combination of beef steak and curry did not match well.

Comment: Always like places with other Japanese selections other than sushi. Their curry was ok but not the best Ive had. Katsu was nice and juicy, but it was odd to me that you needed to pay extra for rice for almost everything but the extra did include soup and veggies.Sushi selection was interesting as they put their own flair to your normal choices. Tasted fresh.I wasnt a big fan of the freshly grilled fish selections but Im picky on the fishiness.Nice cozy space.

Comment: Very nice place! The interior was nice and clean and service was very good and friendly. Only complaint is the savouriness of the food. We tried the crispy rice spicy tuna sushi and it was ok. The hotpots and pork belly egg rice were also very average compared to the price. Overall a nice place but a bit pricey compared to the savouriness of the food.

Comment: The whole experience at this Ootoya location was great. The atmosphere was relaxing and very Japanese, and the food was very authentic and delicious. As a Japanese who has been in the US for years, it made be feel like I’m back in my home country. Granted, it is not the cheapest restaurant, but considering the quality and the location, I have no complaints. I would indeed love to come back.

I ended up ordering the Kaasan ni (chicken with egg and grated daikon) and the Crispy 5 (Bigeye tuna, salmon, scallop, yellowtail and shrimp on crispy rice)! I would totally eat here again and again!!! The service was also terrific with friendly waiters and quick service. Doomo Arigatoo, Ootoya Restaurant!!

Comment: I’ve been looking for a more authentic Japanese restaurant in NYC, and this place did not disappoint! The food was outstanding!!! Also, I’ve never had such fresh and juicy gyoza! It was also my first time having crispy rice sushi and it was so good. So fresh! The dessert was absolutely PERFECT. Such a great way to end a fabulous meal. The only thing I will say, though, is that Kimchi is a Korean dish, not Japanese. However, the “Pork Kimchee Nabe” was incredible. I was very impressed. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are a fan of Japanese food!

Comment: Coming from Florida I wanted to try some authentic Asian food. We go the Katsu Ju rice with fried pork and it was an experience. The soft egg melts into the rice and adds so much flavor to the dish.Included in this dish was the ginger salad. Personally, I am not a big fan of ginger salad or salad in general but the sweet kick ginger dressing was sooo incredibly good and the produce was so fresh. Another experience moment.Lastly I got the gyoza and my friend the croquette. Both delicious crispy and full of flavor. My friend and I both preferred the gyoza but the croquette was not far off.All in all, pricing was not bad and we enjoyed a pretty filling meal. I would recommend to anyone around the Time Square area.

Comment: Delicious! I hadnt been to an authentic japanese restaurant for a while, so i really appreciated this restaurant, the smells, the ambiance, it all made me think back of my stays in Japan. This restaurant is quite pricey, around $25/main dish and a lot more if ordering drinks, appetizer, and dessert. One positive thing though, is that you dont pay tips at this restaurant, just like in Japan, as the waiters are fairly paid to provide great service. We came with no reservation for dinner on a Monday night and just waited about 15min. You can leave your phone number and they will text you your place in line and when to go back to the restaurant. We ordered the katsu kuji set ($26) and a mini bowl of salmon over ($17)rice. Both were tasty, mini bowl really is a mini bowl. The set comes with rice, miso soup, and pickled veggies; its whats called teishoku style meal in Japan. It was delicious and well balanced, I loved every bit of it.My only mini complaint is that the tea was lukewarm, and most of the time we had to be asking for more tea/water. But theyd come right away, at least.

Comment: Great proper Japanese food in NYC. They have a take out window to the right and the left door you can eat in. Ootoya does not accept tips but still have a lovely attentive service. Convenient and busy location. The hall is not really spacious enough for a wheelchair or buggy/stroller user, but the size of the whole place is decent enough.Food came warm and quick and was happy with the food.Staff had no problem going us extra plates to share. The table size was not huge but enough. The low ratings here are due to anti-Japanese, so dont take it to heart. (Look at their other reviews and trust your heart which reviews you would trust) If this place was low rated, most other places should be lower or minus? stars?Again a bit loud and busy due to the location, but same with other busy stores.Would go again.

Comment: Probably there is nothing here that allows one to brag around about. Nevertheless, there is nothing much to disappoint one, either. Both service and food were decent. I liked the special cold corn egg custard as well as the homemade tofu, which was endowed with a natural subtle sweetness. The beef sukiyaki should not be too bad - just that the sweetened flavor of this dish is never my thing and I had to admit that the beef was not very tender. My fav of the meal was the grilled mackerel - remarkably juicy and tender. To sum up, this is a safe choice if you want to hang out with some friends.

Comment: Really high quality and authentic Japanese food. Soba is excellent as is the egg custard that comes with the trays. Just be prepared to wait as there are definitely long waits at peak times.

Comment: Went there for lunch on Friday: words of advice get there before 11:30 to avoid wait times! Although we were told 25 mins wait times it took only 10mins.The food was delicious! I had the katsu ju which was more than filling for me.The reason why it was not 5 stars is due to following:1. Waiter did not remember who ordered what. My coworkers ordered something similar to my dish and we played guessing game on whose food came.2 i ordered brown rice with my katsu ju, the waiter even told me it was brown when he gave me the food. It was white.

Comment: Great addition to the Times Square district, in relation to the current American big brand chains, like Red Lobster and Ruby Tuesday! Good selection of items serving quintessential Japanese comfort food! Giving it four stars unfortunayely because the set dinners no longer include the egg custard...

Comment: I have been to this restaurant twice and had a pleasant experience both times. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. This restaurant reminds me a lot of being in Japan. One of my favorite things is that this is a no-tipping restaurant!

Comment: Definitely coming back to this place. They give you hot towel when you sit down, the place is small but very cozy, food is amazing here. Everything looks so delicate. The price is reasonable too. Highly recommend.

Comment: Very good traditional Japanese food. Nice decor and ambience in a small space. If you plan to come for lunch on a weekday, the closer to the 11:30a opening time, the better as the place does fill up and they only take reservations for dinner. My group of 4 arrived at 11:45a (they only seat complete groups) and we got the last table available. Not a great place for families with strollers as its kind of tight.Service is quick and courteous, and all tips are included in the prices.
