Comment: Great wintter Restaurant week 3 course menu, which unfortunately is greatly downgraded for the summer version. Classic decorations, love the Crispy 5 sushi whihc is not offered at some of the location so check before you book. The waygu soup and uni salmon roe were super, but unfortunately no longer offered and replaced by washu beef. Grilled fish replaced by much smaller fillet and no sashumi, dessert also much smaller portion. 5* for what I got, 4* for whats offered now.

Comment: This place is a dream. Amazing food, serene wood-finished interior, delightful staff, authentic Japanese vibe, extensive sake selection. My favorite dishes are the Kaisen Don sushi bowl and Tonkatsu breaded pork cutlet. All the side dishes are amazing too.

Comment: Amazing and tasty food! Albeit did not speak Japanese, the Service was super nice. Atmosphere is great and the interior decor and design is beautiful !I ordered the Yosenabe as well as the croquette as an appetizer. The main dish was surprisingly small still filling. Our friend ordered the Tonkatsu which was good, but Mama Yoshi Mini Mart has better Tonkatsu IMO.Would recommend trying this place, but not if you are on a budget, the bill was $40 per person.

Comment: Food maintains high quality in my 20+ visits throughout Covid, and I always like the chill atmosphere as long as its ambient music. Seasonal sets and mocktails are creative. Quiet yet easygoing overall. Great place for eating alone after wandering for an entire afternoon. Deducted one star because it used to be a no tip place while it bumped the menu price too much.

Comment: My sister took me here for my birthday during restaurant week and I must say Ootoya exceeded our expectations! The food was delicious and presented nicely. The atmosphere was pretty and our servers were quick! I loved the Kaisen Don, cold noodles and the fries really stood out to me! The dessert was not overly sweet either which was great!

Comment: I was told that the sukiyaki hotpot for dinner did not include rice to accompany it, which was a bit crazy given the relatively high price of the dish. I had to pay extra for a bowl of rice to balance out the sweetness of the sukiyaki. Aside from that, taste was pretty authentic and service swift!

Comment: Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the city lies a hidden gem, Ootoya. The moment I stepped inside the restaurant, it was clear that I had been transported into an authentic Japanese haven. The delicate balance between modern lines and traditional Japanese decor lend a cozy and comfortable ambiance. As I flipped through the menu, I was surprised by the variety of dishes on offer - from tempura to sushi, Ootoya had it all. What truly caught my eyes though, was the special deal for $40. This set included an assortment of items that promised to be a journey through the rich spectrum of Japanese flavors.

Comment: Very quick and friendly service. Reservation was made effortlessly through Yelp and the restaurant opened for dinner promptly at 5:30pm. The food was very fresh and definitely satisfied my wifes and my nostalgic craving ever since returning from our honeymoon in Japan. My wife ordered the pork kimchi nabe, which was very heart warming and filling. We asked for more broth since all the ingredients soaked up most of the broth, and the staff quickly got us more broth! I ordered the Sakura set with a side of curry rice and half an order of pork katsu. The Sakura set was aesthetically pleasing and tasted delicious, I especially enjoyed the little pickled radish shaped as sakuras that decorated each component of the Sakura set! The curry was mediocre, for it only had small pieces of onions in it, I definitely think adding some bits of carrot or potato wouldve made it even more delicious. Half an order of pork katsu cost 8 bucks (if I recall correctly), which is quite expensive for such a small portion. Although it tasted great, I think a full piece of pork katsu for 8 bucks might make it more worth it. Overall we had a pleasant experience and we definitely enjoyed our little date night here.Thank you for reading and best of luck! (:

Comment: We came here for restaurant week, and ordered the nabe set. It was the perfect choice after walking in during a cold rain that soaked my shoes and socks. The broth is salty, but cleverly sweetened so it balances out. The appetizers were excellent, though the soft tofu was grainy. We also ordered crispy rice sushi. The premium japanese rice was ... not bad. I was most pleasantly surprised by the dessert, which was a mild sweet soup with mochi, paired perfectly with the heaty crunch of crisp rice.

Comment: Consistently solid Japanese food with a wide variety of items on the menu. This time around I got the small chirashi bowl which was the perfect amount of food if you weren’t too hungry and the katsu toji which is pork katsu in the soy sauce broth. The pork was a bit tough and salty. Not sure what to do about the toughness but definitely make sure you get a nice large bowl of white rice so the broth doesn’t go to waste!

Comment: Clean, warm, and cozy is how I would describe Ootoyas food. After a night of hangover or a dinner of rich oily food, this is the place Id go to the following day. Great place to bring your Asian parents to as well, could never go wrong. The only downside is that its quite overpriced compared to the relative pricing they charge in Asia.

Comment: I haven’t had a chance to visit my home country, Taiwan in 3 years due to Covid and personal reasons. Ootoya is very common in Taipei and has been my comfort food since my childhood. I was able to finally visit the Union square location because I was touring the area. The food was great and had great flavor, exactly like the locations in Taiwan and Japan. The price is very high in the US when compared to those in other countries. I spend a total of 95.81 and tipped 10% which I didn’t realize that I was under tipping. After signing the receipt, the waitress immediately opened the card folder and called me out from across the restaurant. My experience was immediately ruined. She didn’t directly tell me that I under tipped but instead she called me out by asking “sir, is everything ok?” With an attitude and unsatisfied face. I understand that I under tipped and would have no problem adjusting it if I needed to. I just hope that she wouldn’t called me out from across the restaurant and made me feel bad for the rest of my day. This experience didn’t live up to the typical Japanese motto which is to always put customers at first.I don’t want to do this restaurant wrong with my experience at the end. I did enjoy the food and dessert. Customer service was great until the end, but I am sure it’s just some misunderstanding.

Comment: Good spot for traditional Japanese comfort food.Overall I was happy with my experience here — the food was quite delicious, and the service was terrific. The only concern I have is with the pricing of the menu. I used to remember when Ootoya was a no-tipping restaurant, which was one of the highlights of dining here, as it added to the cultural experience of the restaurant. However, given that prices for many of the food items here are already somewhat higher than comparable options nearby, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify coming here again. I would love to see the prices brought down slightly.Overall, I would still recommend this place as a solid option for Japanese comfort food.

Comment: Overall: head to midtown location near Bryant park if you want excellence.I came here because this was the only Ootoya participating in restaurant week. However the restaurant week menu was not for me and so I ended up ordering my usual.Service here is good. They are friendly and attentive. Wait time is less than midtown. However, food is not up to par.My sukiyaki was warm. Usually it should be sizzling and it was not.The poached egg was way overdone. I always use egg to dip my food in, but this was not possible.I love Ootoya. I have experienced locations in Japan and NYC. The bryant park location is a better choice. This place is good of you want to get a more intimate quiet experience because midtown is noisy and so crowded usually long wait times.Wait time here is a plus.

Comment: Honestly I came here not expecting much but the first thing I noticed after stepping in for the first time was that nostalgic smell of Japanese cooking. Its clean, the staff are well mannered, and they have beer on draft.Trying to have my experience in Japan here is a tall order but the food and overall experience delivered.I got the potatoe croquet, fried tofu, and unagi over rice. Both appetizers were freshly made. The unagi was better than expected. I even had brown rice as an option but I decided on white. The slight burnt ends on rice is polar love affair - some hate some love it. Im the latter.Overall, a nice surprise. Great place for a meet up; not too noisy (even at 75% capacity); good enough for a couple or family eating together.Ive been told they actually have them in Japan but Ive been there several times and just dont remember seeing Ootoya 😆.

Comment: Ordered the curry katsu and a side dish of chicken karaage. First of all, I really loved the combination of sweet and salty (soy sauce based) sauce on the chicken and lemon. It really elevated the flavors and the tenderness of the chicken was absolutely phenomenal. The curry katsu was great and I enjoyed the miso soup which had extra pork and carrots in it.The staffs were excellent, but it was somewhat uncomfortable eating on the street as the car parked right next to me did not turn off the engine for a while. I would love to dine here again if they could put up a little barricade on the sides of their outdoor dining area so that their customers wont have to smell the fumes coming from the street.

Comment: Sakura Drink (non-alcoholic), Saba (salted mackerel set - and the rice I added the hijiki seaweed for $1 extra) - I highly recommend adding that seaweed to the rice it punches things up a notch and it’s worth it. The drink is reallllly nice it has some peach jelly in it and it’s a great light flavour that bubbles and dances over your tongue. The mackerel is really done well, not over cooked at all, crispy skin, nice and oily and flavourful - just how I like my mackerel 🤤 I’m definitely coming back before I leave! I wasn’t crazy about the tofu it was just okay.

Comment: I recently revisited Ootoya. As usual, the food was delicious. If you stop by now, you can order their seasonal set dinners. Our server was quietly attentive and made sure we were enjoying our meal. I find the meal sets are a terrific deal. They come with entree, sides, soup or salad and a light dessert. We went about 6:30pm on a week day and didnt require a reservation. However, I do suggest reservations for weekends. Delicious Japanese food in a quiet setting.

Comment: I enjoyed the food - especially the yakitori set. Service was great. They do not take same-day reservations so if you want reserve a table, do book in advance. My party arrived at 6:30pm on a Saturday night as walk-ins and were seated almost immediately. If youre trying to beat the dinner rush, arrive before 7. I felt like the restaurant was filling up quick halfway through our meal.

Comment: 2018.08 a long lasting Japanese restaurant. Very nice environment, and services... It is a no tips restaurant. Food is reasonable. I tried a shima hoke set. It. Is a grilled 1/2 mackerel. Very juicy. We also tried salmon soup set. And miso katsu set.... They are bit salty because of the soy sauce and miso. That is nature.

Comment: We came here during their more quiet time, a bit before the Saturday dinner crowd. The ambiance is very soothing and relaxing, with airy high ceilings. My wife got the salmon & ikura don, and for me the Yakitori Ju. Both were excellent dishes, and each come with a miso soup. Admittedly, I got a bit jealous of my wifes selection halfway through our meal. To top off our meal, we shared a matcha amnitsu.Note, Ootaya is a non-tipping restaurant. There are two single use bathrooms, fairly small and no changing table if you brought a little one.

Comment: Ootoya is a popular chain in Japan and now have 3 locations in Manhattan. The concept is more upscale here than in Japan and the prices are correspondingly higher. However, what you get for the price is consistently well made traditional Japanese teishoku (set meals). The sets include your main choice, a choice of white or brown rice, pickles, miso soup, chawanmush (a dashi-based egg custard), and usually another small bite depending on which set you order. There are also additions such as grated mountain yam (a creamy, gooey white paste that comes over your rice), onsen tomago (*very* runny poached egg), etc. They also have an ala carte menu thats more extensive for dinner than for lunch.Every teishoku Ive had has been very well made and delicious, though sometimes with some odd hiccups. For example, the Tori Kurozu-an, fried chicken and vegetables in a Japanese style sweet and sour sauce (much less sweet than Chinese style sweet and sour) made with traditional Japanese black vinegar, came with both potatoes and zucchini in the vegetable mix (along with the more usual egg plant, carrots, and bell peppers), but lacked onion. This is odd, because zucchini does not go well at all with the kurozu sauce, and potato adds yet more starch to a meal that alreay comes with a heaping bowl of rice, while onion is a staple in kurozu dishes in Japan. Nevertheless, the dish was overall delicious, but might be even better if the zucchini were substituted with onion. They have a beer and wine license with several draft beers available along with white and red wine and sake and umeshu (plum wine). There doesnt seem to be much of a bar scene despite having a bar as people seem to treat this Japanese restaurant much more as a restaurant to dine and dash rather than lingering and savoring their meals.Staff is very professional and the decor is beautiful - two signs that this is a very good restaurant chain in Japan.Kampai!

Comment: Clean, open, modern, perfect. I had the tofu salad - unique, delicious - and the silky pork with the full dinner accoutrements (egg custard, brown rice +egg, miso soup). The egg custard is reminiscent of uni...silky in texture, light as air, slightly salty. Very filling but we still tried the dessert sampler. Mochi was fresh with excellent texture. Cheesecake was light with a sweet, mild yuzu sauce. Green tea ice cream was a perfect refreshing sweetness with big matcha flavor. Highly recommend this place...great service with a smile.
