Comment: The place has a fun atmosphere. You definitely want to sit inside. I love sitting on the bar if you’re alone or with a friend. The service can vary, I been here multiple times and every time had a different experience. Last time I’ve been they made us wait over 40 minutes with reservations. They were very generous and offered us a drink. If you come without reservations you could wait at the waiting table and grab a drink while you wait for your table. The food is good but can’t say anything was life changing but I do still recommended it for the atmosphere.

Comment: My friend recommended I eat here during my stay and I was pleasantly surprised. It was super busy so I sat at the bar and had very attentive service.I ordered the hamachi collar, yaki onigiri, and the potato salad. The spice of the potato salad didn’t quite match the other items I ordered but was still very tasty.I had a very enjoyable experience, he food was delicious, and the service being it was a late night close to closing was great. I also ordered the spirited away mocktail which was good. I left feeling very full and will definitely be back.

Comment: So damn good! My friend and I shared everything and we were FULL by the end of the meal. The staff is very nice and the kitchen is quick! We went for brunch to try the soufflé pancake and it was a HIT! So was the karage and the smashed potato. My green was fresh and the teapot was so adorable! 10 out of 10 and extra points for the double sided chopsticks and the reasonably priced food💛We WILL be coming back again! They do ask if you have dietary restrictions to adjust the meal for you but we had no restrictions✨

Comment: I was apprehensive about coming here due to the price, but every single dish hit. Each bite was divine across the small plates, main sharing plates, and dessert. I was also worried it would be pricy with small portions, but 2 small plates and 2 shared mains were enough for the 2 of us.

Comment: One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in NYC! Everything is so flavorful. The chicken karage and gem salad were unexpected hits. Lots of great flavors and textures of crunch, sweet, fresh. The desserts were also delicious with the rice cooker cheesecake being more of a cake than actual cheesecake and so many flavors! Highly recommend.

Comment: The ambiance here is impeccable. Whether it’s for a date or to catch up with friends, the environment is strong in vibes and the food is good and reliable. Was a bit confused about how many servers came to our table and they seemed to be in a rush to clear things (cleared our plates before I even finished chewing my last bite). But overall highly recommend and think this is a New York must go.

Comment: This place is dope (but pricey). Coming from a Japan trip, it hit the mark in terms of food quality we had just experienced. Chicken meatball is best I’ve ever had. Tuna was fresh and dressed deliciously. The outdoor-ish booth set up was convenient for dining with our small dog. Give this place a try for a nice dinner out or special occasion

Comment: Definitely lived up to the hype. What a cozy space for brunch. The interior is a lovely coffeeshop vibe, with great outdoor seating with both open seating and private huts as well.Service was casual but professional as well as timely. Great brunch place on a date or with friends.Definitely would recommend the green tea, hottokeki (souffle pancake), chicken katsu sandwich. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicate, delicious and did not feel too heavy.

Comment: Gorgeous restaurant and atmosphere!! Loved their Japanese whiskey drinks, highly recommend the mystery train - part of their special seasonal menu. We got several appetizers and three large plates, thought the appetizers (especially the brussel sprouts) were delicious. The main plates (pork, and one of the fish plates) were a little underwhelming, the pork more so than the rest.

Comment: Came for their famous hottocake (Japanese soufflé pancake), stayed for their gorgeous interior, friendly staff, and aesthetic brunch options. We also tried the Japanese breakfast, whose highlight was grilled salmon with unagi sauce. It felt like I was eating in an art museum; the space was full of natural wood, stone, and plants. Please come and visit to experience this yourself!

Comment: Came on a Saturday night for my birthday and it was so bougie and nice inside, although we had to sit outdoors in the garden cause we had no reservations. we had the mazeman noodles which was flavorful and not too hot, the sashimi shaped like a rose, the hamachi collar fish which was a delicious fish, the tonkatsu which was beautifully plated and all tasted fresh and healthy. would come back for the indoors. the space is a vibe and so modern and captures japanese wabisabi style very well

Comment: Highly recommend this place. Super friendly & knowledgeable staff and the food is inventive, delicious, and with solid portions. Loved the plating presentation too. 100% will return soon to dine again. Best, creamiest miso soup I’ve ever had. Adored the smart use of tofu to enhance textures in dishes. Yes yes to the uni, robata mushroom, rice & egg, skape fish dishes. That ice cream dessert’s unexpected combination delighted my brain & taste buds.(bonus points for age & gender diversity in the kitchen staff! Enjoyed seeing the visible comradarie)

I could live on this!Wonderful night made better by the atmosphere and ambiance in the place and the helpful staff!A must in Williamsburg!

Comment: I’ve been wanting to try Rule of Thirds for a while now. Was excited when we were able to get a reservation. The restaurant is built inside a warehouse, which makes the ambiance so unique. We went around dinner time, so the place was lightly dimmed and felt super cozy. We ordered the karage, tonkatsu, tuna & nori and pork jowl skewers. The karage was pretty good. It was lightly battered and the creamy tartar sauce that came with it was amazing. The tonkatsu was okay- it was crispy, a bit dry and greasy for me. The tuna & nori lacked flavor but they had condiments that made it taste better. The pork jowl skewers were slightly salty, but was flavorful. I would definitely come back and try their brunch menu!

Comment: We had the pleasure of experiencing an exquisite dinner at The Rule of Thirds in Brooklyn last night. As a Japanese Izakaya restaurant, it offers a diverse selection of sakes that perfectly complement the culinary delights. Seated at the kitchen counter, we enjoyed a front-row view of the skillful chefs crafting each plate. Our server, Jack, provided impeccable service, ensuring our evening was both delightful and memorable. It was a pleasure to meet the General Manager, Lauren, whose warm welcome added to the overall inviting atmosphere. The culinary journey was exceptional, with each plate a masterpiece of flavors. The ribeye tataki, hamachi collar, karage chicken, and grilled skewers were particularly outstanding, showcasing the chef’s expertise in blending traditional Japanese flavors with a modern twist. The thoughtful extras provided for us enhanced the overall experience, making it clear that attention to detail is paramount at The Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds in Brooklyn truly exceeded our expectations, offering not just a meal but a culinary adventure that we eagerly anticipate repeating at our next visit.

Comment: The decor is beautiful, it feels airy and sultry and reminds me of restaurants in LA. The service was also delightful and everyone who worked there was very kind. The menu was really inspired but the balance of flavors was off. The binchotan was overdone, the sesame ice cream was cloying. The Hamachi collar was delicious but the accompaniments were a bit random. Drinks including sake were great.

Comment: This place was a friends recommendation. I didnt think I was going to have time to visit, but I happened to be walking by as they opened on the weekend, and took some time to stop in and have a small bite.We ended up getting the chicken katsu sandwich, tuna tartare, and a cocktail to share. Due to the rain, they had to move a lot of reservations inside, but they had a small amount of room available at the bar so we were seated right away without having a reservation. The chicken katsu sandwich was larger than expected, which made it great for sharing. The bread was nice and fluffy which went perfectly with the chicken katsu. The tuna tartare came with some nori strips which kind of made it a fun little DIY hand-roll.The cocktail was a fun addition with some unique sauce on the outside of the drink allowing you to add a fruity flavor to the cocktail as you felt necessary. The staff member asked if we wanted dessert, but we were so full already due to an unexpected lunch we had to decline as we were heading straight to the airport afterwards for our last day in NYC. Moments later they came over with a small cup of the white sesame and berry twist of the house made ice cream on the house. I could not stop eating it. It almost tasted like a super fancy PB&J in ice cream form.Afterwards you can wander the many thrift stores nearby to get some extra steps in.

Comment: One of the best experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. This feels like cozy fine dining. The atmosphere is such a beautiful space, lots of open room and different settings indoor and outdoor. They have spaces for events, lots of open lighting. We booked through Resy on a weekday for dinner. We went early around 5PM and was fairly empty inside but as the night went on it started to fill. Through Resy on the prompts it asks for allergies, occasions celebrated, etc. The servers were super attentive and kind - special shoutouts to Mago and David who made our experience so wonderful. They took note of the allergies and occasion celebrated and really just accommodated us well. Now onto the food. The katsu is a must! Now definitely was hesitant because I’ve had pretty good katsu for lower prices but here they had such a perfect crisp and depth of flavor, it was the best katsu I’ve ever had so far. And a good portion for one (if you’re a big eater too, but shareable haha). The smoked ribs were something I wasn’t expecting but had a nice range of deep flavors - keep in mind it’s not like a typical barbecue rib - it’s got a Japanese flavored take. I enjoyed their smaller appetizers but the pork belly is one I remember the most with the way it melts in your mouth and nice flavoring. They also have such a nice arrangements of cocktails and spirit free drinks. I got the umami grog which came in what appears to be a grapefruit vessel - and was such a nice mix. Overall loved this spot. Perfect for friends, family, dates - all occasions. I want to try their brunch for their pancakes. I will definitely be back!!

Comment: I have to say I liked this place a lot more than expected! The place is beautiful, so spacious which is rare and so welcome for nyc. Very calm relaxing vibe. The staff was patient (we were indecisive) and attentive. Food was very good, and larger bites than I thought. We ordered 4 skewers each thinking they would be a bit but they were actually more substantial. However absolutely delicious, Pork jowl was decadent. The tonkatsu was perfection. I would have just wanted more spicy mustard on the plate.

Comment: We had an incredible dinner experience at the restaurant. The Patio seating was serene and the food and cocktails incredible! I was blown away by my non alcoholic Super Salty Dog cocktail which would be equally incredible with a splash of gin or vodka. The starters were generously proportioned. Loved the tomatoes, the almond Miso soup yummm, the duck wing sausage and finally the Hamachi entree. The flavors were clean light and sumptuous!

Comment: One of the best restaurant experiences in Williamsburg and Greenpoint! Great place for a memorable dinner. The venue is stunning and has a beautiful bar and dining room, open kitchen, and a variety of rooms/spaces to host larger groups. They have an in-house sommelier that has a ton of knowledge about the extensive sake list - we tried many! I have been here multiple times and there are some incredible dishes on the menu… you may want to skip the yuzu ricotta pasta (you will certainly remember it but it is not for everyone) 😂. Don’t skip tomato salad, the tonkatsu or the white sesame soft serve. We will be back!Great for first dates and also large groups. Get a reservation on Resy.

Comment: I had the pleasure of attending a wedding at Rule of Thirds. What a wonderful venue. It’s fun, it’s modern, it’s understated classy space and employees made it all seem “just right”.There is a nice division of space between where the ceremony and dancing takes place versus dining. The very long tables versus the traditional round tables of 10 persons per table was a breath of fresh air.The food was excellent and served family style at the tables. Grilled salmon and prime rib were beautifully presented and delicious. As were the side dishes and the hand passed hors d’oeuvres. Highly recommend.

Comment: Rule of Thirds have been poppin off - I went a while ago and I see why. Tucked away but its very chic and modern inside. I really loved the minimalist decor throughout the whole restaurant.I loved the simple Japanese breakfast and the flavors were simple, yet packed of umami. The miso soup was elevated, but I cant really tell you how they did it LOL. I loved the fish and pork belly and it was such a comfort meal for me. I definitely wish there was more meat/fish but this is the actually portion sizes of Japan. The cocktails were amazing and had a lot of unique flavors. I didnt dislike any of the ones I had. I also loved the soufflé pancake, it was not too sweet, soft on the inside and I loved the slight crust on the outside. PS its definitely shareable.

Comment: Went on a hot Saturday day. The restaurant was very busy. They only had seats outside which was fine by me. Theyve got covering above us, but otherwise open with good air flow and plenty of fans. They served the brunch menu so we got Japanese breakfast, roasted buckwheat tea, Japanese potato salad and tekkadon. My wife loved the mackerel with the b Japanese breakfast. My favorite was the tekkadon: very cold, slim, slices of dark red tuna and the sauce made the rice. The potato salad was unusual as it was curried and not to our taste. Usually its prepared differently. Loved the buckwheat tea! Caffeine free and smelled heavenly. The white miso was the best Ive ever had!!!!!If youve got dietary restrictions with dairy let them know: the bread, kaarage and Katsu have dairy.Theyve got a huge venue with indoor and outdoor seating, a Japanese liquor store and an event space for weddings and the like.Service was quite good, but she was crazy busy serving zillions of tables. They were so busy! Took a long time for us to get our order taken and the first dish to come out and then it went by like clockwork. If you use credit, theyll use a POS at your table just like Europe. Love it!My wife swears the lunch and dinner service is better menu wise. We will be back, but not for brunch.

The most recent visit was phenomenal - from the food and drinks to the atmosphere and service, everything was top notch. Comment: Went here after a sake bar crawl in Brooklyn and was so glad I did. Top notch atmosphere and food. (In a way, I preferred the food over the drinks.) A Saturday at 630 I had no issue getting a table, but it was outside and not the dining room.If you are unfamiliar with the menu, the staff is open to any questions. Bill came out to $90/pp which was more than I was expecting, but no regrets.

Comment: Been here for dinner once and tried brunch for the first time. The ambience is great, especially in the daytime, and both meals were delicious. I feel like the portion size for most dishes (maybe outside of the fish) are really good, and for what you are getting, the prices make sense. for brunch we got the soufflé pancake, the chicken karaage, and the hot honey gem salad. I usually dont like salads, but the hot honey salad with the yuzu vinaigrette is so good! The sobacha barley tea was also decent. My friend and I both had food left for leftovers.

Comment: If youre looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant, this is not it. It is an incredibly instagram-able experience. The food is cooked to perfection, while the flavors are... I guess tailored is the right word?I know myself and I often get frustrated with service, but Ive rarely found myself complaining to management. This was one of those times.Go with a large group so you can share in the ambiance. Make sure you stop somewhere for a slice on the way home.EDIT: Wonderful follow up from the restaurant and we decided to give it another try. Our server, Haleigh was wonderful and the experience was night and day from our last visit. The brunch menu was much more to our tastes and we had a lot of fun. Glad we gave it another shot.

Comment: A great experience, a lot of the food is stellar, and an amazing atmosphere. I started with the Jazz police, a cocktail with a stick of strawberry picky on top that I absolutely loved-and recommend if you’re into sweeter fruity cocktails. We got the duck 3 course meal, the first duck breast part was perfect, the sauces, lettuce wraps, and tender meat coming together, but the second was off. The duck bowl was very oily and ended up feeling much too heavy. If it weren’t for that, it’d have been great. We also got the tonkatsu which was cooked perfectly but the butter/oil of the Pablo had a terribly off and earth-balance butter-like taste to it that completely ruined the dish. Other than that all of the other dishes we got were great! Honestly some of the best dishes I’ve had in the area, it’s a shame that some others were just the opposite. It’s also obviously fairly expensive, so I would come back but only pick a few dishes.

Comment: Great food and atmosphere—the aesthetic is awesome alone. Came for brunch around 10am - 11am—the place was pretty quiet and there werent many diners, but still had good vibes. The Japanese Soufflé Pancake is a must-order—it isnt advertised as a sharable plate, but its large enough to be shared between 2-3 people as a post-brunch dessert. Even when the weather is hot, eating outdoors was very comfortable because of the air circulation and tenting everywhere.

Sydney and the events team were incredibly communicative from our first tour to every step of the planning phase. When held our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception on site, and immediately when we arrived, we could see their impeccable attention to detail and service. Comment: We enjoyed our dinner here. Similar to what everyone said, the ambience is top notch, esp liked the touch of wood everywhere, the outdoor dining areas are very cute as well and there’s a lot of options for group dining. We ordered the house made silken tofu, skewers (chicken skin/pork jowl/lamb tongue) and hiramasa head and collar (specials). Also took a portion of rice, almond miso soup and pickles. Oh and desserts, we were so full but couldn’t resist from trying their seasonal blackberry soft serve… really good with a hinge of sake taste. All tasted great and they were creative. At one point of time the music from the private event was a little loud.. but other than that, service was great and I appreciate dining in their unique space. Restrooms could be a long wait (unisex and only 4-5 toilets).

Comment: Had my engagement party here with my fiancé and friends/family. Been planning this with the management team for a couple months. Out of the many back and forths, there have been a couple confusing/contradictory messages and delayed videos/answers to my questions. MOSTLY, they have been great. One main confusion was the replenishment of platters during the party. While the management team assured me they would be replenished, the staff at the restaurant during the event had no idea. After discussion with the manager at the time, Hammer, he made a compromise with us which I was satisfied with. I appreciated his willingness to listen and understand my perspective. OVERALL, I had a wonderful time with my friends/family (they even moved us inside once the weather started getting a little wet) and the food/sake was phenomenal. I would recommend again for anyone looking to host a party.

Staffs were nice and service was quick except for the Soufflé pancake which took a while to come out. The food was great and we especially enjoyed the pancake and smashed potatoes…who knew smashed potato can taste so good! This restaurant also offers unique Shochu in preference style (on the rock, neat, etc). I got the “Wildcat” which is mellow flavor and refreshing; perfect for a hot summer day. Recommend dining here for any group setting!

Comment: We came here for brunch and was seated outside but still felt like the environment was very nice. But the inside definitely would have elevated it. I thought the hojicha latte was extremely good and the spirited away mocktail. The pancake reminded me of the egg cakes you can get in Chinatown but the butter on it was very good. Also the hot pancake middle cannot be beaten. But other wise the food felt average for the price paid, but I guess you’re more so paying for the ambiance.

Comment: I loved the vibe of this place, the sorry room and the modern style. The menu was interesting, each dish on the menu adds something (no fillers). The food was great, everything having a distinct flavor. I thought the prices were very reasonable for the quality of the experience and the amount of food.

Comment: Rule of thirds definitely lives up to the hype. The restaurant atmosphere and ambiance is great so aesthetic. We got the fish sando, tamago sando, and chicken katsu sando all of them were absolutely scrumptious I really loved the fish!! The pancake soufflé was unfortunately underwhelming it was yummy a little bread-y on the outside but the middle was a little like flan. Will definitely be back but I’d pass on the pancake!

Comment: We booked a private event for 12 people at Rule of Thirds to celebrate our wedding and it was wonderful!!! Really exceeded our expectations on food, service, ambiance, and organization. It was really easy to communicate with staff leading up to the event for planning purposes. And the day of was executed perfectly - the timing of the courses was really well planned out and they did not rush us out even when we went a bit over the booking time.We also had a few vegans and allergy accommodations in our dinner party which they handled really well. Would absolutely return both for a meal and a private event and highly recommend!

Comment: As soon as I walked in I was blown away, it gives west coast vibes and Japanese garden! The place is huge with high ceilings! I loved how the servers dress, they are all beautiful. My server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. The service is fast. The food was terrific. I went for dinner alone and got the hot yuzu honey salad which was ok, the tuna and nori were delicious, the chicken karaage was also delicious, but my favorite dish was the small hamachi, it was very fresh and rich in flavor. This place is definitely worth a try! I can’t wait to return.

Comment: After so many of the long-standing Japanese restaurants closed in the area it is nice to see the new guard reinventing. While the interior is well designed the intimate outdoor spaces are the place to sit in good weather. This is a great place for a first date because you can share small plates and try new thing together. Also puppy friendly outside. Staff is super friendly and has recommendations for any taste. A great addition to the neighborhood!

Comment: They have really good duck dish that you need to reserve a couple days ahead. It is cooked into 3 dishes: duck wrap, duck with rice, and duck bone tea. The rice was a little too salty imo, and I dont think they cook long enough to get the crispy bottom. I also like the asparagus as well. Wagyu is okay, I wouldnt recommend ordering it tho just because it is too normal. They have a different brunch menu in which the only thing I think is pretty good is the pancake souffle. Its a little airy, has butter on top; and they also let you choose an ice cream flavor (we chose raspberry) to go with it, which goes really nice together.

Take note that it does get super hot inside them. Looking forward to trying the dinner menu as well as the other spaces inside the restaurant as it’s quite massive.

Comment: @netgonenutsforfood⭐️Kakuni pork belly bowl was silky soft but honestly what wowed me was the almond miso soup?! Sweet undertones with savory dashi ✨⭐️ Chicken Katsu Sando: Ginormous portion and the chicken was fried superbly. My only qualm was that the bread was too thick for my liking.✨Soufflé pancake: Don’t skip it. This baby made me forget my stress for a few hours 😂Coffee was alright, nothing special. Did not grab brunch drinks but maybe next time!

Comment: This place was recommended to me by a friend and Im glad I went! The atmosphere is awesome, especially the outdoor seating; it looks like something straight out of Japan. We sat inside and started with a sake sampler; the selection was impressive and included some local sakes. To eat, we had the Karaage (which was good, but its fried chicken), the Clams Sakamushi (solid 10/10 - the sauce was perfection), and a fish head special (holy cow, best fish Ive ever had and was cooked to perfection). We ended with the white sesame ice cream for dessert, but it was a little too sweet. Between the two of us we spent over $200, but it was a worth it and a wonderful treat. We also stopped by the attached sake store, which had a decent selection of sake and Japanese whiskey, but I really with they carried Dassai 23 so I could have grabbed a bottle!

Comment: I recently booked a spring pavilion for a group dinner at Rule of Thirds and had a great experience! The U-shaped table in the pavilion was perfect for conversation among a large group and the overall space was very aesthetic. The restaurant was also very accommodating about dietary restrictions and allowed our vegetarian guest to order a la carte instead of opting into the prix-fixe menu. For food, we pre-selected items from the set prix-fixe menu. The quantity of each course was excellent- we weren’t too full from the appetizers and even ended up with some leftover food. Dishes that stood out to me were the chicken meatballs and the karaage.Booking a pavilion was definitely on the expensive side but if you’re looking for a space with great vibes and good food, I would recommend Rule of Thirds!

Comment: In a very excellent and crowded Greenpoint/Williamsburg food scene, Rule of Thirds stands out. The location is beautiful - airy high ceiling interior with light wood trim, and many covered outdoor tables in what is effectively a large Zen garden.Have been here for dinner and brunch, and there was not a single thing that wasnt delicious. For brunch, the souffle pancake is mind-blowing, and the chicken katsu curry don is as good as any Ive had anywhere, Japan included.Cant recommend this place highly enough!

Comment: LA vibe.Food tasted great, everything Ive tried was really savory but blended perfectly with the rest. The place sits in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area and feels like being in the west coast.Got there mid week, plenty of space outside and their bar is a mile long. Outdoor space is cool but get there when nice and warm.Tried the brothless ramen and was good, get it with the add-ons so youre not missing anything. The ricotta Dumplings were a nice surprise, the broth here made the dish.Made the mistake to order the ribs, way too messy with chopsticks so youll have to dig in. But its worth it.Cheesecake was good, a meh on the presentation though. The juiku, or whatever it was, was disappointing.Ill be back for lunch, I think Im missing something here.

Came here for brunch and it was very busy.Brunch menu was small, we really liked the Japanese soufflé pancake - definitely a highlight and a must get here. They had a eel sandwich as a special but we found that a little weird.Chicken Katsu sandwich was pretty good but the bread would’ve been better if toasted a little.Tuna tartare and karage were pretty average - karage was heavily breaded.

Comment: Great options for vegetarians (I’m sure a lot can be made vegan). It’s refreshing to be able to go out to eat a vegetarian meal where it’s not all dairy or deep fried. Highlights were honestly everything we ordered: hot honey salad, onigiri, grilled maitake, ricotta dumplings in mushroom broth, mazemen, and the sesame soft serve for dessert. Took a while to have a server come over initially but after I asked the service was great. Would recommend making a rezo even though the space is huge. We walked in at 6pm on a Wednesday with no wait but by the time we left the waiting area was full.

Comment: I would describe this as the perfect destination to bring someone who is visiting from out of town. It has that quintessential Brooklyn coolness while also being delicious, and its flashy but not overwhelming. Mary was our server and she is actually one of the most delightful and sincerely kind human beings Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting. The service is also incredibly fast. Like, you will not be chillin out here for 2 hours... unless you are so inclined. We got soup, an entree each, a pancake (a MUSSSST if you come here), and a couple rounds of drinks and were truly in and out within 60 minutes. Set a new record. The pancake was so good that my boyfriend and I were physically incapable of stopping ourselves from finishing it, even though we were completely full. I would go back just for the pancake alone. Im not sure how theyve invented a pancake so perfect, yet here sounding off in the comments. All in all, great brunch spot to bring a friend, drinks are exquisite, get the pancake.

Comment: Came here on a whim with my friend and brother. It was quite good and had a lovely atmosphere! It a pretty large restaurant and there were a lot of people but not extremely crowded. My friends and I didn’t have a reservation so we say bar-side, which we didn’t mind but, if you want to sit at a table I’d suggest getting a reservation. My friend had ordered a whisper of the heart cocktail. It was okay, it didn’t really tasted like anything listed on the menu and by the end of our meal she regretted getting a drink. Also, we were given “tap water” but, it had this weird mineral, carbonated flavor that did not taste like tap water. Our food was great my friend had gotten mazemen, I had gotten karaage, and my brother had gotten a couple items off the binchotan section and the pickles, soup, rice and poached egg combo thing. The mazemen was amazing and the noodle were cooked perfectly. The karaage was fried so well though, the sauce was a but heavy. The binchotan items we had gotten were so good. I remember how good the the pork jowl we had was and it was buttery and delicious. The miso with almond was crazy good, I didn’t think almond miso would taste good. The biggest problem we had tho was the rice with poached egg. My brother eats eggs constantly and everyday and a lot of the time he eats them poached. When we got home he felt very sick and was on the toilet for a while. Again, he is very used to eating eggs especially runny cooked eggs.Overall, we got weird tasting water, my friend didn’t like her drink, and my brother got explosive diarrhea… four stars. :)We also had an incredible cheesecake. It was so good!!

We made a reservation for a sat brunch but arrived on the wrong day 😂 but luckily there was an outdoor space and we got seated. We ordered the chicken Katsu sando and the hottokekki- both incredible. Loved the mustard on the chicken sandwich and the fluffy texture of the cake. Prices were high but portions were quite large too. We enjoyed the meal so much that we kept the reservation to come back and try the other dishes!

Comment: A gorgeous spot in Greenpoint that I did Saturday brunch at for my birthday. We booked a table well in advance and were seated without issue, though there were many parties waiting so Id definitely recommend a reservation. What we ordered:- Japanese Breakfast Set- Smashed Potatoes- Karaage- Tamago Sando- Hottokeki- Matcha LatteMy favs:- The smashed potato was a much larger portion than we expected and it was topped with mushrooms, a poached egg, and a spicy sauce to mix in. Definitely my top item from our meal when it comes to taste and value- Quality matchaFinal Thoughts:This restaurant is gorgeous and the vibes really make a meal here feel special. There were a couple of standout items, but the rest was just okay especially for the prices. Our reservation indicated it was my birthday so we were gifted a card, a black sesame soft serve, and our hottokeki came with a little candle which was a nice gesture. Our server was wonderful, but drinks took a very long time to come out (mine being comped as half our meal was over before it came). If youre looking for a stunning restaurant and vibes this is great, but you could definitely get better taste and value elsewhere.

Friendly staff for sure, but a bit hectic given the size of the space. We got the chicken karaage (my favorite), the pancake soufflé (it was fun but not that unique in flavor, tasted like a Dutch baby but fluffier), the tuna and nori (classic), and a side of rice with poached eggThe chicken was for sure the star, with the tuna following behind in recommendation

Comment: First thing the ambiance was amazing and staff were super friendly. We didnt have a reservation and didnt want to wait for a table so we sat at the bar. We got the Chicken Katsu Sando, Kaarage and Japanese Souffle Pancakes. My favorite would have to be the Chicken Katsu Sando. The chicken was juicy and a crispy. Order their known Japanese Souffle Pancakes to me it tasted like the Chinese Sponge Cakes in Chinatown that I would get for like $2. Felt like the prices for each dish was pretty expensive. Would I come back? I would if it were a bit cheaper.

Comment: I visited Rule of Thirds for Brunch on a Saturday. The overall atmosphere is fabulous but I was slightly underwhelmed by the food. There was a short wait about 15 min for my table even though I had a reservation. Staff was very polite and attentive. The food was good but it was odd because one of our main dishes arrived before our appetizer and then there was somewhat of a wait for the second main to arrive. I will say that staff checked in on us to make sure that we were okay.We ordered the Kaarage (which came second) it was very delicious. A little tangy and crunchy. The ginger soy and tartar sauce adds a nice touch and really compliments each other. The chicken Katsu (arrived first) was underwhelming. There’s room for more flavor there. It was almost bland. The Hottokeki was delicious. It’s almost like a bread pudding pancake fuzion. My only qualm was by the time you get to the end it’s a little dry as they only give a small amount of syrup. We didn’t get anything to drink beside matcha lattes which was pretty good.Overall I would say the food was a 3 but the whole experience was a 4. I would love to try renting one of their outdoor houses with friends perhaps that would improve the experience. If you’re a drinker their drinks list is IMPRESSIVEFor two people we spent $78 a good price for the experience

Comment: Tl;dr: 3/5 service and pricing, 5/5 foodService:• If you’re going here for the first time during the winter, prefer to get indoor resos. The outdoor seating … seems pretty basic / surprisingly unenclosed given how cold it is outside? The tables have heaters but we were seated at a table near where people walk past us often (pretty drafty), so we asked to switch to a table further in the backPrice:• Look at the photos I’ve added? See the small cup of grapefruit juice? It’s 7.50!! 🥲 There’s really no way to justify a gallon’s worth of juice for that little — sorryFood:• Great! Really liked the karaage and the souffle pancake• Not as important, but the miso and pork belly bowl are pretty good too

Comment: Closer to four and a half stars. Rule of thirds is a uniquely elegant Japanese inspired complex, with both indoor and outdoor dining. Few restaurants in New York match the sheer scale of the ambience. The dining experience almost matches - all the seafood fair, daily catch, skirt, and hamachi collar weren’t just delicious but also reasonably priced. Karage also a highlight! Other dishes are less a standout, but if you’re looking for a modern Japanesesque restaurant Rule of Thirds is a great choice for any occasion.

Comment: Amazing New Year’s Eve dinner experience! We were a party of 5, and made advanced reservation due to the day and anticipating it would be busy. It was so unfortunately we had an outside table. It would have been fine (beautiful decor) but it was pouring rain that day so it was a bit less than pleasant being outside. However the service and the food made up for the less than ideal table. I loved everything we ordered. The cocktails were creative and tasty. Standouts food-wise were the Karaage chicken and the Whole Duck (three courses of deliciousness). Want to go back to try brunch.

Thirds’ GM Joel (thanks, Joel!) recommended the Roast Duck Feast— three amazing courses crafted from the same duck. I won’t spoil the details for you, but be prepared for it to blow you away! Marco carried himself as if he was our personal “Sake Sommelier,” bringing out countless pours of specialty bottles to taste throughout our meal. The restaurant altogether is incredible, & unmatched. Everything was really good! I particularly liked the included almond milk miso soup, it was sweet and warming.I particularly loved the non-alcoholic cocktail section, including the one I got called Spirited Away which I assume was named after the film, which I love. The food was good to great, but more than that, the atmosphere, and service were top-notch.

If you come here for dinner be prepared to share everything, most dishes are small and meant for sharing. Prices are very high, but everything was perfectly made with quality ingredients so it was fine, just worth mentioning that this isn’t a casual dinner. I wasn’t blown away by anything, but enjoyed every dish I had. We didn’t get a dessert because the only options they had were cheese cake or ice cream. I would invest in expanding with more interesting desserts. This is definitely worth a visit, preferably with a small group

Comment: Everything was soooo delicious and we sat outside on their covered patio where the aesthetic was on point (minimal, spacious, bright.- Tamago miso sando: this was my friends favorite! It had a thick egg omelette with salty trout roe on top - all sandwiches between two fluffy milk bread slices- Smashed Miso Mushroom Potatoes: this almost tasted like chicken since it was so flavorful! It had a perfectly poached egg in the middle too- Chicken Kaarage: a classic. Super delish here with the tartar sauce on top- Cocktails (Nite Kappa, Do the Dew, Chiba Surf Club): these cocktails def werent as decorated as their dinner cocktails but were refreshing and perfect for brunch!- Japanese Soufflé Pancake: super buttery, airy and warm. A must try!

Comment: What a beautiful dining experience! It was amazing to come here and spend some time with my friends. I loved this place and the food was delicious! The only reason I took one star is because the table I sat at was so squeaky :(. It definitely affected my sound sensitivity while seated. Otherwise, this was a magical experience. Great waitstaff.

Comment: We had a birthday brunch there for a party of 14. Set menu at $55pp. No drinks were included and the souffle Pancake was an add on to the menu.Ive always wanted to try the place out and with my cousins bday I finally got a chance to. It was pretty disappointing. The stars are mainly for the staff that served us. Food was slow. Very slow!Since everything was served family style, it kinda lost the charm that caught our attention in the first place. They started us off with the toast, egg, and karaage. Then for the main, the onsen egg first, then came rice, the market fish set, the pork belly, and last the miso soup. Now keep in mind everything was family style. There really wasnt enough rice to share especially with the egg. They should have given us individual bowls of rice instead. Imagine eating a very wet poached egg on a plate with a dollop of rice the size of the egg with chopstick (no spoons provided). Then the mains went around the wet eggy rice.Honestly, they could have served us the individually plates instead of family style. The experience would have been much better. Majority of the items were cold dishes besides the fish and pork belly. They just need to pre-plate the sides (cold vegetables) and then add the hot portion. We added the Pancake and it was just ok. Some of us got a big chunk of salt at first bite.Overall, the experience was not the greatest. Food was mediocre at best. I may give it another try for dinner but this experience was not a good one.

Comment: Rule of Thirds is a fantastic place for weekend brunch. Its located in a large, well-lit and airy restaurant with very modern and clean Japanese aesthetics that gives you a feeling of openness and lightness. The brunch menu is traditional Japanese fare, featuring a mix of donburis (rice bowl sets) and sandos (sandwiches). We had the chicken katsu sando as our starter to share between 4 people -the sando was a very crispy, breaded fried chicken thigh dressed in some tasty Japanese mayo. For my main I had the kakuni donburi - the braised pork belly was nicely succulent and tasty. The standout favorite of the table though was the Japanese souffle pancake. The hotcakes were incredibly fluffy, and the honey maple butter gave it the right level of sweetness - its the perfect brunch dessert to balance out the savory mains. Even if you dont live in Brooklyn, this is worth the trek out from Manhattan.

Comment: Only came for dinner. Place was completely booked but luckily they had a standing room waiting area. Was able to get the dessert and it was delicious. The cheesecake was great and the soft serve was fantastic. The space is amazing and really cool with many private dining areas. I am looking forward to going back for dinner.

Comment: The setting is adorable and well thought out.The service was excellent. The Chiba Surf Club Drink is well and the chives are an awesome addition. The food was fine. We had the Karage which was great! The Soufflé Pancake is good, somewhat like warm angel food cake. I would order it again and ask for more butter and syrup, or splurge with the side of soft serve. It needed something else, that what it came with. The Curry Donburi bowl was flavorless and not good at all.I recommend a reservation, there was a line out the door when we were leaving.

Comment: One of the better dining experiences Ive had in awhile. The service was amazing. Our server was very knowledgeable of the entire menu, helped us decide on a bottle of sake. We preordered the duck a few days in advance and so happy we did. It was served in three courses: duck lettuce wraps with sauces/toppings, crispy duck fried rice and bone broth. Honestly, it was amazing and well worth the price. The bone broth alone, I would come back just for that, insanely delicious. Also, it was my partners birthday and we received a glass of sparkling wine and the best DF ice cream (white sesame flavor) I thought that was such a nice gesture.

Comment: Fantastic experience from the food, to the decor, service and ambiance. Highly recommend for an intimate meal that will be memorable! The dishes were prepared with quality ingredients and complex flavours for simple recipes. Nothing felt too heavy or rich, just the perfect balance. The only thing that wasnt finished was the white sesame ice cream which was a bit too sweet.Interior seating is beautiful, but overshadowed by the beautiful exterior. Outside seating does have heating lamps to keep you warm. The music is played softly so it doesnt drown out conversation.

Comment: This is a beautiful place. The outside has private large seating areas, and the inside is also gorgeous. It has a Scandinavian-chic clean minimalistic vibe that appealed to me. Service was good, and the food was very good. The miso soup with almond was delicious and the kaarage fried chicken was just insanely delicious. The tuna donburi was fair, but was not really a standout. Would definitely come back!

Comment: My husband and I live a 5 minute walk from Rule of Thirds and its a practice in extreme self-control to not go there for brunch or dinner all the time. But thats not why Im writing a review today. Its because of the INCREDIBLE time we had hosting our wedding at Rule of Thirds. Take the BEST food and drinks + impeccable service from all Rule of Thirds staff and event managers + a beautiful space that gives you a lot of beautiful starting points to build off of and it truly gets you the best wedding ever. We couldnt wait to share all of what Rule of Thirds has to offer to our friends and family who came in from out of town and also the ones in town who hadnt had a chance to eat here yet. Im so grateful to everyone at Rule of Thirds for making the entire day so special and we cant wait to keep going back there and reliving it time and time again. We did a full buyout of the space and it gave everyone a ton of beautiful areas to explore, we were able to use their outdoor private dining areas for a sake tasting during the cocktail hour, and of course people loved the event space itself -- lots of selfies and other fun videos taken in the atrium room with the mirrored skylight. Honestly too much good to write it all here - but have your wedding (or other event!) here and you will never ever regret it. OR at the least go for dinner and enjoy all the delicious food and amazing service youll get as a normal patron of the restaurant. WE LOVE RULE OF THIRDS!

Comment: I just had the perfect rainy Sunday brunch at Rule of Thirds. Food and service were great but it was the ambience here that made it amazing. As soon as I walked into the oversized wooden front doors, it was as if I was transported to Kyoto. The restaurant was super spacious with beautiful aesthetics. From the private traditional partitioned rooms in the front to the high ceilinged indoor space to the green outdoor garden, I felt completely in awe and instantly relaxed. Even though the place was busy, my friends and I had a great time catching up with each other without having to scream over one another nor compete with the loud music like most brunch places in Manhattan. We were seated in the outdoor garden and even in the rain, it was very peaceful and quite lovely. The food here was solid. Everything we ordered was tasty - the souffle pancake, chicken sandwich, karaage, bluefish breakfast set and tuna tartar.I am very glad I tried this restaurant. It was worth the trip to Brooklyn and I definitely would visit again. I recommend it without hesitation.

Comment: The entrance is located on a street with warehouses and garages. Youll miss it if youre not standing in front of it. The restaurant opens up once you venture in with various outdoor minimalist seating decor (for groups). Once inside the main area, the bar and spacious seating arrangements provide a comfortable place to mingle with your friends. Service is attentive (seated at the bar). Food imo was great (the Morning breakfast with the fish), well portioned although it may be small for others. Overall a place to return again and try their dinner menu.

Comment: Dinner Review // Rule of Thirds embodies minimalistic in regards to space and presentation, with an elevated feel. Beautifully designed interior and exterior seating for small and large parties. Food was phenomenal although portions were small. For a party of four, we ordered the following: duck hearts, maitake, sashimi, tuna and nori, oshizushi, the hot honey and yuzu salad, karage, and Nikujaga. Everything from our binchotan selection, to the smaller and larger dishes were delicious and of quality. I honestly cannot narrow which was my favorite as I would highly recommend all the dishes. At Rule of Thirds, you can easily understand that simplicity goes a long way; especially in Japanese cooking/dishes where the flavor(s) of the main ingredient is never sacrificed with an abundance of spices or sauce. To top off our meal, we ordered the rice cooker cheesecake and the white sesame soft serve. I wouldn’t order the cheesecake again as its texture was not as smooth or creamy as expected. However, the soft serve was creamy, not too sweet, and did not taste artificial.Service and staff were friendly and checked in often which makes this spot a new fave.Brunch Review // The brunch menu offers an array of dishes but the most popular item looks to be the Japanese Soufflé Pancake. I expected this to be more airy and fluffy, but this closely resembled that of a Chinese sponge cake in terms of flavor and texture. It was served hot with maple syrup and butter. The chicken katsu sando was quite large and pretty good, but I think I’d try other options next time instead.Dinner > Brunch

Comment: When walking in, we were fascinated by these little rooms that looked of tatami and when entering the actual restaurant- WOW! The layout of the restaurant was on point. The way the chefs and back cooks able to see and all - modern with the preservation of Japanese culture mixed into one. We waited about 10mins where the waitress was attentive for us to order a drink. They took us into a little wooden outdoor room with 3 fans and we were fans! The privacy and even the way the structure of the table was so intimate. Our waitress was so friendly and with the staffs dress code (certain colors only) everyone was so buttoned up. Now onto the food - you wont go wrong with anything, really. My top faves were - almond miso soup, kakuni (pork belly - soooooo tender and juicy), rice with poached egg, yuzu salad so bright, and karaage. The souffle was worth trying as well. All of the drinks were fabulous! Take me back!!

Comment: Trendy, Modern, Chic Japanese restaurant in GreenPoint ;)I go to the area in the morning to drop off my mail with my dog and meet my friend. We decide to have brunch at Rule of thirds. This restaurant is a dog friendly so my dog can sit with us at a nice cute table outside. I love how they build this place. When we get in, there are sections of seating. The private rooms that look like for a big party, outside tables, indoor tables and another big private rooms inside I dont know what is it for.I see some delicious pictures on Yelp but many of them are in dinner menu and we are at brunch. It is not a lot to choose. We have Japanese breakfast set, Karaage, Rice With Poached Egg, Miso soup and brunch cocktail: Chiba Surf Club. The taste of food is sweet. Im okay with it but my friend isnt crazy about it. Like I mention they dont do dinner menu now so my friend feels disappointed, she just wants to have wagyu and sashimi. Drink is very nice this time only me drinking because my friend still hangover from last night, lol.The fact that they have such a nice cool place and good service, we will go back next time for dinner.

Comment: I have been wanting to try this place for some time. The Japanese Souffle Pancakes sold me as soon as I saw pictures online and they did not disappoint! My girlfriend and I give the pancakes a 10/10 and will go back just for them. We also had the smashed potato dish which was really good as well. It was our second best dish. We give it a 9/10. The other two dishes we tried were Karaage and Chicken Katsu. We probably should have stuck with one of these dishes because we had too much chicken! Both dishes were pretty good but nothing amazing. We give them 7/10. Lastly, this place is great for a photo op. Don’t forget to take pictures!

Comment: This was sooooo good. The fried chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had and the hot honey salad was delicious. We got the surf club to drink which was also so good. For $7 the cold brew was straight up bad. And of course, we had to get the pancake. It was really good but definitely a little too sweet. Something I would get once and feel satisfied to have had it. The vibe in here are amazing and the staff is really nice and trendy. Very cool addition to the neighborhood!

Comment: It was a photo studio converted into an Izakaya spot. It is a unique space for a dining experience. Great selection of drinks, and if you sit at the bar, you can see the kitchen in action. Waiters are very knowledgeable about the food and can clearly describe the dishes and taste. If you arent sure what sake to order for drinks, they can help you with that as well. Just tell them what you like (I.e.. Dry, smooth, fruity taste..etc.) Two items we ordered kind of lost me but everything else were good. First was the pork jowl yakitori. I wasnt sure if it serves real porl jowl or pork fat. Because when the yakitory served to us, its over 95% of pork fat. I asked and ordered the second time, it was the same and I think this may not be the item I would order again if I revisit the place. The second dish is Wagyu Nikujaga- its a “busy” dish. The menu stated “egg yolk,” but based on the dish served, I am not positive if I saw the egg yolk as part of the presentation.Other than these two dishes I would say the rest are present good. Unfortunately, we did not know the duck needed to order in advance because it would take a few days to prep for it.

Comment: This was my second visit to Rule of Thirds, I came back as I enjoyed it very much the first time 2 years ago at the start of the pandemic. The service was great, our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and even assisted us in selecting gluten free options, and gave me a great drink recommendation. We made our reservation online and dined indoor, no vaccination cards were requested. We ordered a couple plates to share which included the Sashimi, pork jowl, crispy rice, wagyu, almond miso, and potato salad. Everything was delicious, our favorites were the Wagyu Nikujaga, Almond Miso Soup, and the Potato Salad. This restaurant has a great selection of cocktails, sake, wine, and beer. I tried the Umami Grog cocktail, it was refreshing and picture worthy. I’d certainly recommend and hope to come back to try the Buddhist Duck.

I thought the fried pork was okay, wouldn’t get that again but the oshizushi is my absolute favorite dish. The trout noodles w cheese was a scary combo at first but it actually was so good! Comment: 3.5 *** // Went for a brunch with a friend that was vegan and gf. Her options were very limited because of that. For myself - I had the fried chicken sandwich which was good, but could have packed more of a punch.I would return for the pancakes - which need at least 2 or 3 to share. The real highlight is the open air space. It’s a beautiful inside outside experience, great for big groups or small parties with their special tent spaces as well. But I found the food to be average and not living up to the hype.

Comment: Recently booked in the summer pavilion for a group of 11, and it was wonderful. The food was delicious and the service kind.My only feedback is that we were expected to share some dishes in the fixed menu that were not really shareable. While I love sharing food, it was a work event, and it felt a bit awkward for several dishes. For example, there was some sort of chicken meatball on a skewer that needed to be shared three ways. Or a poached egg that needed to be shared four ways. For the caliber of attention to detail in the food, not to mention the price ($175/person including drinks, tax, tip), I would expect more attention to this specific detail. Still five stars :)

Comment: In reality it would be a 3.5 but google doesn’t let me do that. So much hype around Rule of Thirds, I didn’t feel that it lived up to the expectations. Service was a little bit slow all around, from getting additional drinks to the awkward pacing of the dishes coming out. All of the dishes we tried were just “good” nothing really gave us that wow factor! The servers had great recommendations and were so nice, but attentiveness to drink orders could be improved on.The silken tofu was edible, definitely silky - just found it lacking in the flavor department. I would order the Wagyu Nikujaga again in the future, but it was just good not earth shattering. The best thing we tried was definitely the strawberry ice cream with yummy little crunchy beads (I don’t know what they were!)

Comment: Hip izakaya fusion concept sponsored by team behind Sundays in BK. The highlight is the crafty cocktails and the extensive sake menu. The flavors are not authentically Japanese, and the food is on the salty and heavier side. The black sesame soft serve has good flavors but unfortunately way too sweet. Overall, good ambiance and service (plus cool courtyard dining when weather is nice) but lacking in food quality considering the price.

Comment: When I came here back in December, I visited a host of places for food, but this is the one that stood out the most. Enough to write a review about it 4 months later. Izakaya can be a hit or miss for me, because you pay a lot for small portions. But if it’s done with attention and creativity, it’s so worth it. And here, so it was the case. Every dish surprised me, made my heart skip, and teased the tongue in such new ways. Wish I could go back!

I’ve come here for a private party before and the restaurant went above and beyond for us. cocktails are amazing, and they have an extensive sake selection (with an amazing sake shop called bin bin connected to the restaurant!). i love it here, i can’t wait to be back for the umpteenth time

Comment: Overall a delicious Japanese fusion restaurant! The ambiance was very lovely and they had a big menu of a lot of unique dishes. Overall, it gets a 4 stars because some dishes were very delicious, and some missed the mark.My favorites were the wagyu nikujaga, the pork jowl skewer, almond miso soup, and trout cheese mazeman. They were all really tasty, and portions were better than expected! As good as many of the dishes were, I was really disappointed by a couple dishes. The butter bean kasujiri has a VERY strong sake flavor which made it extremely unpleasant to eat. I only had a sip and I couldnt tolerate it. The potato salad also had too strong of a horseradish taste to it, and the yakionigiri flavor was not really there. Also, for all the raw fish dishes, the fish was warm and didnt taste fresh. All in all, it was decent and I loved the ambiance but some dishes were pretty big misses to me so Im torn about coming back. Would give it 3.5 if I could, 4 stars because service was good.

Luckily the weather wasn’t too cold because the little “huts” didn’t have any insulation, but they were still very comfortable to dine in :) the pre fixe menu was good and family style worked really well for my party. I only wish that they were able to accommodate some of the dietary restrictions (food allergies) especially since they were noted in the reservation beforehand. Overall, the waitress we had was great and the food was tasty and the ambiance was sublime. Would love to come back here someday and check out the regular brunch or dinner menu.

Comment: We ordered the duck hearts, pork jowl, and lamb special skewers and almond miso soup for appetizer. Duck hearts had the best texture and flavor. I’d eat that over and over again. The pork jowls were pure fat and we couldn’t finish it. Rarely do we leave food on the plate but this we could just not eat. The soup was delicious and definitely thicker than a regular miso soup. We also had the clams (yum, but on the salty side), the broccoli rabe and the hamachi collar for our main. I urge everyone to order the hamachi collar. Cooked so beautifully and enhanced with wonderful little bites and sauces on the side. I would have given this 5 stars but the service wasn’t great. We sat outside… and I’m pretty sure they forgot about us a few times. It took 2.5 hrs for dinner, and that was with us rushing them at the end. It was unnecessarily slow.

Comment: Loved this spot! If youre going for dinner definitely get the pork jowl -- it was so succulent and flavorful. Everything else we got was also really good. The karaage was also very spot on. The mazemen was bowl full of flavor. Tonkatsu was fried too perfection. Id skip the Yaki OnigiriIf youre going for brunch I only got the Japanese souffle pancake and the chicken katsu sandwich and both of them were incredible. 10/10 would go back again for brunch and for the pork jowl

Comment: Everything was incredible, but I think the consensus at the table was the tamago sandwich being the star of the show. Very light and delicate flavors without anything overpowering another. The chicken katsu sandwich was not as cumbersome to eat as I was expecting (also the pink in the meat showing in my photo is from the flavoring, its not undercooked !). The souffle pancake was also tasty, but I would recommend trying to portion the cream on top into every bite, it really makes the dish. Our service was great, and the atmosphere was very lively (it was a busy Saturday). I would definitely come here again!

Comment: Venture out to this hidden paradise for an exquisite eating and drinking experience. Rule of Thirds is a great place to impress a date, or say, take your partner for Valentines Day celebrations. The cocktails are creative and showy without sacrificing taste or amount of alcohol served. We would definitely come back just to sit at the bar and try the cocktails we didnt get around to. There is also an extensive and I mean extensive sake and shochu menu that I would love to work my way through. The food is also next-level, and the menu is well organized. A lot of us are used to fancy Japanese food implying sushi, but rule of thirds offers a very different and artful take on gourmet Japanese with some raw options but mostly heartier, cooked ones - perchance this was a seasonal winter menu and I appreciated it. We sat down next to a couple who had ordered the Maitake mushroom and tuna and nori appetizers and that was advertisement enough. Somehow the tuna tartare looks small in all the photos but I promise you its larger in life. Its a heavenly amount of tuna from with you can make your own nori roll bites. Definitely enough for two to shower. The mushroom, shape alone, is an experience in and of itself. For dinner we shared the white bean stew and the hamachi collar. The stew was huge and served to both of us from a big hot pot by our server. A very fresh and comforting hug of vegetables including one of my favorites - broccoli rabe. And more of the crazy mushroom. The hamachi collar was one of the best things Ive ever tasted. The skin alone was so well seasoned and crispy. The meat itself falls right of the bone (theyre big bones, easy to avoid dont be afraid!) and tastes like ... stewed chicken thigh of the sea? Thats insulting but thats as close as I can get. The depth of flavor and creamy texture is impossible to describe. Id only had the sushi version of hamachi (yellowtail) before and while it is one of my favorite foods raw, in the midwinter it is even better served like this. We then got dessert - white sesame soft serve ice cream and Japanese cheese cake. Im such a sucker for sesame and will be trying to order sesame ice cream from now on at places that probably dont serve it. Lastly we tried one of the many shochus off the extensive spirits menu - one made from fermented barley and if youre as big a fan of mugicha barley tea as we are, you will love this spirit. Our server was above and beyond fantastic and knowledgeable without being over the top. The ambiance will make you want to redesign your apartment. We will definitely be back to try the mazemen and the sashimi and all of the rest of the cocktails - also their brunch! Its indeed a pricey outing, but its a heck of a great way to blow your ducats, celebrate, show off, nourish your soul... :D I really wish I took better photos of everything but I was too excited and bashful about ruining moments and being a vicious phone wielder in such a beautiful environment.

Comment: One of my new favs in the neighborhood. Sitting at the counter, Reese (sp?) was an absolute joy serving and interacting with us. The pork jowl skewer is a little small but packs a flavor punch, the Pork tonkatsu is a tasty monster of a dish that my roommate and I couldnt finish. The hamachi collar was well excuted and left us wanting one more bite. If its available when you read this, try the umami grog. I absolutely loved mine.

Comment: Tamago Sando - 6/10My boyfriend got this dish and he really enjoyed it but I don’t really love huge block of eggs so it’s a pass from me and a go from himChicken Katsu Sando - 7/10I personally liked the chicken sando a lot more as the chicken was crispy and juicy. However, I think the bread slices are too thick and I wish there was more sauce and that the miso mayo was spread on the bread already for me because I made a huge mess trying to do it myself. This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and huge but our food took almost an hour to come. Our waitress was super sweet though and gave us some sake on the house bc of the long wait time.

Comment: I am a potato salad connoisseur and this is by far the tastiest potato salad Ive had yet, would win any side dish competition in my book. Moving on to the mains, brunch here is *chefs kiss*. Katsu and egg sandwich were great but their sets are really special. Pork belly was phenomenal and their market fish is cooked to perfection and packs so many layers of rich flavors. I cannot wait to come back for dinner. &yes interior design and ambiance are indeed a 10/10.

Comment: Came for the soufflé pancake, but really loved everything we ordered for brunch! The salad with yuzu dressing was probably the best salad I have ever had, and I loved my chicken katsu sandwich. The pancake lived up to the hype— especially the honey syrup. The dining spaces, both indoors and outdoors, were beautiful. Definitely a bit of a splurge, but worth it for the quality and the ambiance!

Comment: Warm and aesthetic interiors, great service, and a super solid menu. Both brunch and dinner are great here. For brunch, highly recommend the egg sandwich and soufflé pancake. The soufflé pancake is big enough to share with amazing flavors added in the toppings. The egg sandwich is surprisingly fresh and unique. Eager to come back to try more!

Comment: Came for dinner and was surprised by how open and beautiful the space was. We ordered the maitake skewer, hamachi sushi, tonkatsu, and broccoli rabe and enjoyed the maitake and hamachi, but thought the tonkatu was a bit too heavy. Tonkatsu was definitely enough to feed 2 people, maybe even 3. Overall, a good experience, but we probably wouldn’t seek it out again, especially for the value.

Comment: Really amazing ambiance and vibes. the food was good, but overall missing a little flavor. the best dish was mazemen... the chicken fat onigiri was also good but we needed some soy sauce. the wagyu was okay, but it didnt quite feel like a steak dish. not my favorite place in terms of food, but definitely worth visiting for the atmosphere.

Comment: Great ambiance! An industrial Japanese event space - perfect for a date, time with friends or work night. The bar area adds a nice touch. They also have private rooms for events. The price was very reasonable. We ordered:1. They are known for their - Karaage. It was good but I would have liked more favor. Maybe a fun sauce would have been nice but it was still good.2. The chicken meatballs were yummy. You get one per order so if you’re hungry order more.3. Broccoli Rabe - so so good! I could have ordered a second portion of this. If you love veggies, give them a try.4. Smashed cucumbers - Our waiter, Ty recommended these. I’m glad he did. They were really good. Sort of made me think of a pickled flavor. Very clean and simple.5. Tuna & Nori - not my preference but my boyfriend loved it.Overall, I’d definitely return. The ambiance and customer service wins the night for me. Well done, Rule of Thirds. 🙌🏾

Comment: Went here a few weeks ago with friends. Ordered almost one of everything on the menu because everything looked great (also, we were with friends! dont judge me!). Service was awesome. The Japanese Souffle Pancake and House Silken Tofu (if still available during the day!) were fantastic. Thanks for a great meal.

Comment: Fantastic food and beautiful restaurant! Stunning Japanese design with an industrial feel . Service was excellent, our server was very friendly and gave us great recommendations. All of the skewers were delicious. Karagee and Yuzu honey salad were also great. My favorite was the vegan soup! The fish was not great. Will definitely come back!

Comment: The food here was really good but overpriced for quantity in my opinion. However, we did over order partially due to the recommendation of the server when we asked if we got enough food. We could’ve just not gotten one of the smaller plates. The service was pretty good and I really liked it. The food is apparently also meant to be eaten family style the whole time, which I really appreciate. The drinks menu was interesting and I would definitely go back to try it.

Comment: I am really happy to see the legacy of Norman was very well carried out by rule of third! The indoor dining space is airy, bright and spacious. The outdoor is also set up like a pice of art. I thought I came into a Japanese garden the moment I entered. The yuzu hot honey salad was extremely refreshing. The tossed buckwheats made it very interesting. The soufflé pancake is light, fluffy and to die for. The maple butter gave it more flavor. Wish to come back for some outdoor dinner experiences soon!

Comment: Uniquely wonderful dining experience for our family of 8. Enjoyed well presented, well prepared, and delectable Japanese food items in our private cabana. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive the entire 2+ hours we dined. We all enjoyed making our own sushi and sharing the more than plentiful dishes of wagyu meat, tonkatsu pork, Asian vegetables, marinated mussels, delicious cocktails, & many other items. A family meal to remember!

Comment: Wow!!! I gotta say restaurants with so much space and good ambience is so hard to come by in Brooklyn! Like all authentic Japanese food, the portion’s not big which just means we can get more variety :p Both the silken tofu and the sashimi were so refreshing! For alcohol, I would say that El Kimono was too plain? But Upstream Color was definitely a fun surprise :-)

Comment: This place has slightly above average food, slightly below average service, and stellar atmosphere.I should have taken pictures of the atmosphere because they really nailed it. The place is gorgeous. Walking in, they have a few “bungalows” that are beautiful and have room for a small gathering. The bungalows are beautiful looking with nice wood and linen curtains. They also have all the seats around a center area so no everyone can see and talk to each other. The normal tables are nice too, the place is open and airy with a great decor. You will not feel cramped at all. Very chic.I must say that the service could have been improved. We often struggled to get the waiter’s attention. For example, we ran out of water and had to wait a while just to flag the waiter down to refill. As for the food. There were some highlights and some disappointments. For me the katsu was pretty good and was a good value. I would have preferred to not have to order $35 worth of katsu and forced to share. But at least they actually give you a really decent size. There was a tad bit more fat on the cut then I personally preferred but that was just me, my friend actually liked it. On the same token I like the very crispy exterior while my friend didn’t.The Kara-age was very tasty but the two criticisms were that they had a little leftover cartilage and the Mayo was so tasty, we wanted more. The tofu was a delight. I did not have it, but my dining mates loved the taste and silky-ness of it.The last highlight was the muscles. There were very tasty and were sweet. A real pleasure. All other dishes were tasty but just slightly above average.

Comment: Wow, what an incredible experience my boyfriend and I had at Rule of Thirds. When you walk in through the side door of a wall you see airy tapestry for outdoor seating and an almost whimsical feeling as you pass the stone walkway and to the hostess stand. The interior was even more captivating - elegant, intimate yet fun and welcoming. The food was also delicious and on par with how beautiful the restaurant is. Our favorite dish was the tonkatsu and definitely a good price for the portion size. The veggie stew was super unique in flavor as it is cooked with sake and you’ll definitely taste a hint of it! Our favorite skewer was the pork jowel and next time we’d love to try the karage and mackerel skewer. The drinks are fun and tasty too, wanted to try the grapefruit one but it was sold out. They also have brunch and super excited to come back and try the soufflé pancake! If you have a friend in town or just want to have a special night out look no further and make a reservation here!

Comment: Great spot for unique dinner with friends. Came here on Jan 1st to celebrate New Years. We ate a prix fixe meal at their outdoor wooden cabins, which was intimate & minimalistic. Our server was wonderful and very attentive. I told her I was currently pregnant, and she made sure to take into account any dietary restrictions I might have. For example, my party had ordered the sashimi to start, and I knew I would miss out on that but the chef was nice enough to give me a few cooked pieces! Midway during the meal, she even gave me a hot bag to keep me (& baby) warm and comfy. It was definitely a gesture I’ll never forget. The food is definitely filling, so be prepared to eat. I only tried the nonalcoholic beverages, but my husband was a fan of their Japanese whiskey selection.Excited to come back when they’re back open and try their brunch!
