Comment: I’ve been frequent Sakagura for quite some years now and it never disappoints. Always enjoy the food, ambience and services.Recently went back with a group of 9 and we had a great time.Food was good as usual but service was a bit off putting that night, at one point during mid way at dinner our server was trying to discourage us to order more dishes. Maybe it was a busy Friday night and he wanted to turn over the table?

Comment: Hidden gem in manhattan! Literally, it’s in the basement of an office building which you will not find if just passing by.The greeters and coat check at the door was fast and efficient, very friendly as well.Service in general was excellent, the attention to detail makes us feel like we are in Japan, every single detail was not left unnoticed, a piece of garbage on the table, taken away immediately, some crumbs on the table, cleaned up immediately, water glass is empty, refilled immediately along with many other details. The food was amazing!! Truly one of the best izakaya type restaurant we’ve eaten at in North America. The special yellowtail fish with the sake pinenut sauce was to die for. So much flavour, so tender, the sauce was the perfect pairing to the fish. Just amazing.Sashimi was extremely fresh, not a single piece that wasn’t excellent and fresh.Pork shoulder was amazing, love the mustard on the side which complimented the pork very well. The highlight was the clay pot rice. We ordered the crab rice and the mustake mushroom rice. Just delicious, they present it and serve it at the table in the clay pot. Flavourful rice and the mushrooms really come through. The crab was amazing as well, you can taste the pieces of crab and it was just delicious. The best Japanese restaurant to go to in manhattan.Give it a shot, it does not disappoint.

Comment: There was a awesome selection to chose from and the waiter provided any additional information about the meals to assist with our selection. The warm Sake was a new experience that we simply had to try more than once. The meals we had were all very nicely presented and thoroughly satisfied my curiosity as a first-timer to the establishment. The décor and friendly but efficient staff all added to the overall experience.

Comment: Cant say this for many places but legitimately every dish we ordered here was incredible. Highlights were definitely the cod liver, Braised beef tongue/short rib, and grilled cod. The sashimi was very fresh, and the chicken karaage was great although overshadowed by everything else. Dessert was a matcha tiramisu that was also very well made

Comment: This was our favourite restaurant when we were in New York. The food was phenomenally tasty and really good value - they had the best soba Ive ever tasted which were better than ones Ive had in Japan! The matcha mousse was heavenly. Even the toilets are a 10/10 - theyre heated and multifunctional 😊

Comment: Came here for my 30th birthday dinner. Wasn’t sure what to expect. Hospitality was absolutely amazing and should be the standard. We weren’t sure what to order so we took our time and ordered a few dishes each time. I never felt rushed or ignored. Servers were there as I was emptying my water glass to refill it. I will probably think about the oysters for the rest of my life.

Comment: I was brought by a friend to this Japanese restaurant which is located in a basement of an office building. It was dark inside. The food was delicious and had unique flavor. Especially I liked the grilled cod and lightly seared beef. They were like tapas type of small dishes. Quite pricey given the portion. The seating was tight. The table behind us was a big group with loud talking and laughing. Although the food was good, the whole dining experience was not great.

Comment: The food here was astonishingly good despite most of the menu being devoted to sake selections. The restaurant is barely a sushi restaurant given that most of the choices are cooked dishes. However, the chef’s choice sashimi was outstanding as was everything else we tried. The restaurant itself is very dark and had the speakeasy vibe going. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely return the next time we are in New York to try other menu items that we were too full to order the first time.

Comment: Interesting itzakaya in an underground setting. The Sake collection is vast and the food options are fine. The stone cooked A5 Wagyu is a cute novelty presentation but certainly wouldn’t pass on taste alone. The zaru soba, mountain yams, and agedashi tofu were all very well prepared.Service is fast and appropriate for the midtown area but felt didn’t love the constant pressure to order faster and order more at this price point. Fine for corporate meals but unlikely to return on personal plans.

Comment: Great food. The allergy awareness was inconsistent, there were a couple times we had to send back plates that had something on the plate that we explicitly said couldnt be included because of an allergy, it seemed as though the waitress hadnt reported it to the kitchen. Beside that they checked in on us regularly, our water was never empty, and the food was delicious and beautifully plated.

Comment: Been here more times than I can count for its wonderful creative cuisine - last night the eggplant, bamboo and broccoli rabe dish was incredibly tasty, creative, interesting - and the spinach with sesame is the most delectable thing — service is so friendly as repeat customers we are treated very well — plus the “secret” location in the basement is so cool — so New York — and in Midtown it’s so difficult to find food like this.

Comment: I used to love this authentic (slightly high end) Izakaya - unfortunately it’s not the same place any more. The quality is still great and my guest from overseas was happy, the service was good, but I do miss the old Sakagura, that served quality real Japanese food, not fusion Asian.I will still come back as this is one of the oldest Japanese restaurant that maintain the quality despite the change they had to go through due to Covid. Hope they will be back to Authentic Japanese Restaurant. They still have great Sake List, so if you like sake and want try various sake over light bite in a nicer than regular Izakaya setting, I would highly recommend.

Comment: This place’s best quality is the ambiance! Hidden away, it opens up as a speakeasy. We had a great time here but would have liked a bit more of guidance on what to order, as the dishes are truly complex and we clearly did not know what to order. The desserts are were a highlight! Would not have the onigiri again as they didn’t have a lot of the topping. The wagyu beef was insane!

Comment: As a speakeasy sake bar, this place is fantastic. This is not a place where you go for sushi and expect Omakase or sushi entrees. It is more like Izakaya style food. The star of the show is their sake menu. I am a huge fan of nigori sakes. It is the first time I had a junmai daiginjo nigori sake. It wasnt as sweet or milky as your typical nigori. Id opt next time for either a straight up dry junmai daiginjo or a straight up nigori. Im a huge fan of the Kamoizumi Summer Snow nigori. Im happy with any Japan-made dry junmai daiginjo.Id suggest getting sake flights and try as many as you can stomach - make sure you have a safe ride home....The menu felt like a big list of Japanese tapas and I left hungry, even after spending more on dinner for two than I would spend for five at a nice place. We had the sashimi platter for two (15 pieces) which had tuna (not toro), rainbow mackerel, sea breem, fluke, and yellowtail. We had an uni with clementine crudo served on an oyster shell that had some other sweet syrup in it that we couldnt pinpoint. It felt like a shooter. The uni was cold and tough, not the way I like my uni. We had an Ikura hummus which had some other green ingredient we couldnt pinpoint. It was tasty and the crackers used with it were tasteless, which is actually good so you focus on the hummus and Ikura. We also had a scallop, prickly pear vinaigrette, and green chili (jalapeño) crudo which came with three pieces. It was good, but not a wow. Miso soup was standard fare and served authentically without a spoon.Service was very good and the waiter knew the sake choices well. There was a manager checking in on tables, which is a great practice for any restaurant. If he wasnt the manager, that was creepy, but I think he was, indeed, the manager. He didnt introduce himself.I would definitely go back, but not for a meal, more for an after-dinner sake flight.Remember to tip well.

Comment: I came to dinner for my boyfriends birthday and it was our second time there (once pre-pandemic and then now). The service was great, the food was amazing, but the manager went above and beyond for us. Initially, we were sitting at a table for 4 but to accommodate us and the group of 4 that walked in, he kindly asked us to move seats. Normally when this has happened to me, Ive been told Can you move seats? but the manager instead showed superior etiquette by asking us to help them out. It seems like a small thing but it meant a lot to us that he did everything he could to maintain our comfort during our time there, even though we were moving tables mid-dinner. After we moved and finished our main course, he gave us complimentary shots for helping them accommodate more patrons. When I told him we were celebrating a birthday, he came back with a lit candle and the best sesame ice cream weve ever tasted. We will definitely be returning to Sakagura after our wholesome experience there. Thank you!

Comment: Ambient: 7 out of 10. Tables are on the smaller side but servers do a good job managing the flow of plates brought to you. If you arent sharing, itd be difficult for sure. On the positive side, you do feel as if you are somewhere in Tokyo. Restaurant is tapas style so youll need to order 2-3 plates per guest. We went for an early dinner (6pm) and spent about $120.00 (including tip)Hot Sake (house) = excellentPork Belly = excellentFried chicken = OK at bestUzaku Eel = very goodDassai Sake-kasu Salmon = very goodSurumeika Squid = excellentMochi ice cream= very goodWell comeback to try their bigger dinner plates.

Comment: Pretty big restaurant in the basement. but we were able to call shortly before we arrived to kind of reserve a spot. Service was really good - the servers are really friendly. The pork belly is sooo soft and tender. The karage is probably one of the better value dishes. The food in general is really good, but is pretty pricey for their serving sizes. I also thought the summer soba was very yummy. There are lots of drinks here too, so come if you want to explore some sake!

Comment: I went to Sakagura for ochazuke, but ended up having cold zaru soba lunch set (note that the lunch menu is different from the regular one!), and it was so great! I would say this is at least as good as the best zaru soba that I once had in Tokyo, or even better. What’s more, I can see that the chef has tried very hard to find the best solution for both native Japanese and newbies to Japanese food, and it was a huge hit! Hats off to the chef!

I went here for my birthday and we just kept ordering a little bit at a time. The mock-tails that the bartender made were delicious. I love that its a speak easy. I would have never stumbled into such a place it if wasnt recommended to me. I would definitely come back here.

If I remember correctly, it was some red bean paste with egg custard and matcha powder on top. It was divine - hoping they add it to the menu so I can eat it again.

Comment: Very hard to find - get your GPS on your phone. Its in the basement of a quiet, unassuming building and you can easily miss it by blocks - I was not amused with a very small Japanese sign with a tiny English on the street. HOWEVER, inside was very interesting - plenty of options for Sake from Japan, good food (low sodium for a Japanese restaurant). Despite the jam packed night, the service was pretty good. A fun place.

Comment: This place is a basement gem. It has a serious Kyoto old Japanese feel while being a really rad sake bar right near grand central. The food is phenomenal. Every single dish is curated and stunning both aesthetically as well as on the palate. The food is Japanese but it changes based on availability. All the staff is educated on sake and the pairing of the meal accordingly. The bathrooms are SO cool with fully automatic toto toilets within a giant sake cask. Please don’t come here. I would like it to stay a secret.

Such as the pork belly, hotate baba ghanoush, gomoku kinpira, ebi tempura, etc. We had quite a few dishes. The portions are small. So, keep that in mind. The restaurant is in the basement of the building. We didnt realize that at first. Im glad we had reservations as the place was busy and when we arrived there were walk-ins waiting for a table.

Comment: Sakagura is quite the cute restaurant and it makes for a unique place to visit in the city. It kinds of reminds you of small bars in Asia which are hidden from view. You can find the restaurant located down a set of stairs and you are greeted by the host at the very front. In terms of ambience, the restaurant is quite peaceful, surrounded with an abundance of greenery and you can hear the soundtrack of small birds chirping in the background. The restaurant only offers a prix fixe (tasting menu) right now, at $85 per person. We ordered the Aburi Chashū Otsumami (seared chashū pork), a favorite but an add-on to the prix fixe menu. It was followed by the Katsuo Tataki (skipjack tuna) which is the first dish of the actual tasting menu. It is slightly tangy and is an overall light and pleasant dish. Subsequently, my friend and I were served the Hotate Butter Sauté (bacon wrapped scallop with miso sauce), which was quite “umami”, flavorful but not overbearingly so. Our favorite dish of the evening. The Sashimi Santen Mori was alright, excluding the uni (sea urchin). Our server explained to us that the uni was sourced from California. It tasted briny and a bit off. I have definitely had better uni before, which if good quality, is light and creamy at the same time. If it is your first time trying sea urchin and you find it less than pleasing, I would recommend giving it another try elsewhere as the taste can change depending on where it is sourced. The Madai Tsutsumi Yaki (baked red snapper), while being a hearty dish, was slightly under seasoned and came off bland as a result. The meal ended with a Malibu Blancmange, which was refreshing and light. I thought it was pretty decent but my friend, who is a fan of coconut desserts, was a tad disappointed she could not taste the coconut. While Sakagura is a cute restaurant, you can certainly find Japanese restaurants in the Lower East Side that have a wider selection, if not better quality food.

Comment: Among so many excellent Japanese restaurants in New York, I recommend the highly regarded Sakagura. It is located in the basement of an office building near Grand Central Station and is known as a hidden gem. Being in this 100% Japanese-style restaurant will make you temporarily forget the hustle and bustle of Midtown New York. The restaurant offers traditional sushi and sashimi, as well as a variety of creative Japanese dishes and soba noodles. The menu is in English and Japanese with photos. The service is excellent. Many diners comment: Dining here is like going to Tokyo. During and afterwards, both my son and my daughter said that this restaurant is cool and they would like to come again in the future.I highly recommend SAKAGURA Lunch Tasting Course. The staff were ALL FRIENDLY!!! This was my first time there and our server ( his name was Dai) did an amazing job! He took his time to explain the different Sakes to us and never once rushed us( we were contemplating which sake we wanted). He was attentive and constantly came back to refill our sake cups. They served it in the cutest bowl with fresh flowers! Such a different experience. I would highly recommend. We didn’t eat this time around but will definitely be back to taste the menu! They also give packs of matches with the name of the restaurant up front as you leave. Highly recommend if you are looking to wow a date or surprise a friend with a hidden spot!

Comment: The experience of entering through an office building, getting past security, down a flight of stairs by the back to access this time-perfected restaurant is both fantastic and rewarding. Rewarding because you feel like you are in on a secret only few know... Rewarding because as soon as you enter you are transported to Japan. Its magical. We visited after the second indoor reopening when they only offered a special prix fixe menu. It also happened to be Valentines but I believe the only difference being the dessert.Definitely worth the money. The course started with an fish appetizer, a tuna carpaccio salad, followed by a delicious salmon belly. A sampler sashimi spread ensues and finally the highlight: a shabu shabu yellowtail (or I recommend upgrading to a Waygu beef version). The shabu shabu kombu broth was hearty and healthy. Now Im no means a sweet tooth but I have to say the chocolate mousse dessert was EXCELLENT. Not too sweet, not overly rich, but well balanced with a high quality chocolate dusting and ice cream. Before COVID, Sakagura was one of my favorite go-to places in NYC for a nostalgic dose of Japan. Everything on the ala carte menu is great, and their set lunch menu is a no brainer. If you are into Sake or Whiskey their selection looks solid, but I rather have my meal focused. Glad to see they are keeping up their high standards despite these difficult times. A must try.

Comment: You have to make a reservation at least 24hrs in advance.I am going to sing praises of this place for months to come. This is a true Japanese speak easy. With no boards outside the building, customers have to be aware of the street address, enter the building, and confirm with the security guard that they are not, in fact, mistaken.Go down a hall and look left to a door which may seem like a fire escape staircase, but in reality is leading down to the entrance of this amazing Japanese Izakaya-like restaurant.Sakaguri (Japanese for sake brewery) has a huge selection of Sake. Since Im not familiar with the many varieties of sake, I had a lot of questions regarding dish pairings, etc. The staff is very friendly and were patient with our many questions. We ordered 4 dishes - fried or grilled, and paired with a glass of smooth Kimoto sake - the Jokigen. I highly recommend all 5 orders if you like a selection of grilled and tender proteins paired with a smooth but effervescent Sake.1. Buta Kakuni - a tender, flavorful bite. Definitely worth staying a signature dish. Highly recommend this to be in your order.2. Ebi Stick - Satisfying, crunchy, paired with a flavorful spicy, sweet, sour, umami sauce.3. Jidori Shioyaki - Grilled, tender pieces. Served with a side of 3 toppings - sea salt, fresh crushed Japanese chilli peppers, and yuzu citrus pepper. A small amount of sea salt and the crushed pepper made the delectable grilled pieces even more scrumptious.4. Salmon Saikyo Yaki - Absolutely beautiful, tender, and delicately sweet miso-steeped salmon, with a fresh pop of the sweet-soy marinated salmon roe.

As a frequent out of town visitor to this neighborhood, I was.pleasantly surprised when Sakagura bubbled up to the top of my search. This was a phenomenal food and sake experience. Even though Ive had a lot of varieties of Sake over the years, I learned a tremendous amount in one meal. My waiter took his time explaining the origin of each complete with history and comparison. The food selection is wide and varied. I enjoyed their tofu salad, sashimi (be sure to check the daily specials), ebi stick and a.cold.udon dish. Each was excellent, fresh and complex. Comment: Ever heard of speak easy bars? Well, this is a restaurant that is not so easy to find, despite the fact that its located in the heart of Manhattan. I love this place! The food is authentic Japanese cuisine (and this is not sushi place). If you like sake- then this place is a must for you as their sake menu twice as thick as their food menu. In other words sake is they specialty as its even reflected in the name of the place. And lastly there are plenty Japanese people in this restaurant, which in my eyes makes it only proves its authenticity and quality. I suggest to make a reservation prior to visiting it.

Great place to meet friends as long as you make a reservation. Word is out and just standing in the lobby of the building, you can observe a virtual parade of “oh my god how cool it’s in the basement” couples. Comment: This place has a very obscure entrance, we had to call them to locate the place. The restaurant has a monastic feel to it. The sashimi we ordered was beautifully paired with a selection of seaweed and Sakura leaves. Their special menu takes 50 minutes to serve, but it will be the best 50 minutes you spent. We ordered our sashimi and sake first. Waiting for the special dish was not a pain at all as we were still recovering from the experience of the delicious sashimi. The special dish was as amazing as promised. We finished with a green tea tiramisu which was sublime. Their collection of sake is formidable.

There was a long queue outside even before the restaurant opened.Food was wonderful - among the best I have had for a long time. I and my friend ordered about 8-10 dishes, since they were mostly small plates - bar food. I liked their steamed pork belly and their eggplants a lot. The sashimi was fresh and well-selected (I am not sure how to describe it - sashimi is just raw fish, but the one they served tasted much different from others)Service was alright. They are very, very busy - all the tables and bar seats filled up within the first hour of their opening. Guests are roughly 50% Asian and 50% American.Overall I was very happy that I tried this place. I highly recommend Sakagura, and I myself will come back again when I am in town.

Comment: When you enter Sakagura, you immediately feel as if you are in another world. I love their chill vibe and bamboo decor coupled with natural greenery. The dish presentation is amazing and if you’re a drinker they have a giant sale collection. The staff is super friendly and they get very crowded, so reservations are suggested, however my friend and I got a table w/o one on a busy night and got to sit at the sushi bar watching the dessert chef whip up amazing creations while we dined.Bonus - they have a GF menu too

Comment: Amazing experience. The food brought back memories of dishes I had in Kyoto and Osaka, Japan, during my visit. A wonderfully welcoming and professional staff, and great ambience. My taste buds have been spoiled (in a great way), and I plan to come back for more. Highly recommended.

Comment: Excellent food and friendly staff. The restaurant itself is located on the basement floor of the building. Go through the main door and past the security there is a stairway down. I had the Jewel Bento, which they only serve 10per day, and was right size and taste for a good lunch.

Comment: Pretty cool spot under the business building. Restaurant Is spacious and has great menu. I thought the sushi rice was had a little too much vinegar. House made soba was delicious!Fish was fresh and flavorful.Tempura was just ok, I could taste the oil too much. I would stick to the main meal since it already is a great portion for one.Service was great.

Comment: We had an exceptional experience at Sakagura. It does take you back as though you are in Japan. The hidden location adds to it. The service is attentive, friendly and helpful. We were keen to try a Sake but didnt have any idea where to start, so our server talked with us about tastes we liked and chose a spot on Sake. Which was served beautifully. Each dish we ordered was exquisite, in presentation and in flavour, including the octopus with wasabi, pork belly and the sauteed beef. It was so easy to book a table online, we reserved a table late on a Wednesday evening. It was an amazing welcome on our first evening in New York city. I will recommend this to everyone visiting New York as a must visit Japanese restaurant.

Comment: When you want All The Sakes.Seriously, the sake list here is *exceptional*. Mind you, if youre not crazy, youll end up losing your shirt - the prices on quite a few of these (very good!) sakes can be up there! Then again if you pay attention, you can work your way through quite a few sakes without breaking the bank 😀The food here is long on munchies (think of the place as, kinda, sorta, an izakaya). That said though, the munchies are invariably very very good, lending themselves to a fun evening of noshing and sake. All that said given a choice, Id rather go to their other location (Sakagura East), the bar is more conducive to a communal experience. But, then again, this *is* near Grand Central, so if youre in the hood....

Comment: On of the beat izakayas in the city. If you’re into Sake you’re in for a ride. It’s s said to have the second biggest sake menu in the world. Friendly service in a room that takes you back to Japan. Food is yummy. Worth going in with a date and sit at the bar or with friends and share a nice bottle of sake. Kampai!

Comment: Well this restaurant is so hidden. We could not find its sign from the street. We instantly thought the restaurant might be close down...With the help of door man, we finally found the restaurant located in the basement. After spent a pleasant night there, we can say this is one of the best Japanese restaurants we have been in NYC. From decor, food and service, we definitely felt like dining in Japan!

Comment: Incredible! This hidden gem deserves more visibility than the paltry sign next to the office revolving door. Take Stair F and descend into this wonderful slice of traditional Japanese culture with an air of acid jazz playing overhead. The choice of sake is mind blowing and if you havent a clue, the waiters are skilled enough to recommend a good option based on your preferences. The food is served with distinct Japanese professionalism and is delicious through all three courses. For the price, this is excellent value and would recommend hunting this place down to impress a date or client.

Comment: A surprisingly spacious and laidback atmosphere with a unbelievable sake menu that details not only origin, but also how each type is brewed. Theres plenty of variety in the food and its all excellent - everything is a great size for sharing without being too big, so its easy to try plenty. We had the nukazuke (pickled veggies), onigiri (rice balls), negimaki (roast duck and scallion), shishito age (peppers), buta kakuni (braised pork belly), cherry blossom flan, and black sesame crème brûlée. Everything was excellent - probably one of the best dinners Ive ever had. We both commented on how amazingly tender the pork belly was in particular. Our waitress was really helpful suggesting sake, which made it easy to try something new. The service was top notch and the meal was nice and relaxed at the time we went (around 8:30-9). I think earlier in the evening its pretty busy. If you go at dinner and want to drink, be ready to spend a bit of money. However, its well worth the price, and you can make a decent meal for quite a bit less if you dont want sake with it.

Comment: My boyfriend and I came here for the lunch tasting course with sake pairing. The wait staff was incredibly excited for our experience and really kind to us. The food (especially impressed with the sashimi course) and sake were fantastic. At one point, I got food happy and spilled some sauce on my blouse. One of the bus boys immediately spotted me in my awkwardness and brought me a wet towel and offered me club soda. All in all: great food, great service. Cant wait to come back.

Comment: There is little for me to say about this place except that I always find myself deeply satisfied every time I visit. Dont be fooled by the fact this styled in the manner of an izakaya. The variety of dishes on the menu combined with the precise execution and presentation puts even some of the more high profile restaurants and established restaurants to shame. Not to mention one of the most noteworthy aspects, the expansive sake list. In short, great food, great drinks. Were the food cheaper this place would receive a 6 out of 5.

Comment: Food was delicious, and lunch-time portions were generous. Waiting for the elevator to get down to the dungeon-like basement takes forever, so if youre handicapped or cant take the stairs Id go elsewhere if youre in a hurry (waited for 10 minutes to go down, and 15 minutes to go up). Service was fast and friendly, and they honored my reservation and sat us almost immediately upon arrival.

Comment: They have really good dishes here that I would never thought of ordering. I never had beef tongue but they make it so good and delicious! My friend ordered rice to finish the sauce! The beef rib stew and the pork cube (their special) is also so good. These dishes are not figure friendly after the holidays but certainly worth every bite for me and my friends.
