Comment: A fun place for japanese izekaya dishes. the takoyaki were better than most, crispy outside, soft inside and the octopus piece inside wasnt tough. the gyoza were good. the okonomiyaki was extremely burnt on one side. it would be a nice place to visit with friends and get japanese comfort food.

Comment: Cannot speak about the food here as we only had drinks, but the service was impeccable. Theyre very creative with the naming of their cocktails, and we ordered a few different ones and they were all very good. Id definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a classy calm atmosphere with great drinks.

Comment: This is a real catch of a place to eat. Great food, not too bad prices (for Manhattan!) and a real quirky atmosphere.Highly recommend the deep fried oysters, and the plate of salmon oshi sushi (pictured) was amazing.Happy hour offers a few drinks for cheaper, sake is $6 for a small bottle, and Sapporo lager was $5 and really nice and fresh.Staff are friendly and attentive.. second visit says everything.. will go again. Thank you.

Comment: Came here for lunch with a group of 7 on a Thursday and was able to be seated immediately. Im so surprised this place isnt more crowded because the food was amazing. While they offer some sushi rolls, I say skip them and go for the other meal items. We shared the fried chicken was tender and seasoned well, not super spicy which was appreciated. The salmon bowl was fresh and filling, but the main event was the eel. For $25 you get a platter of 5-6 pieces of eel over rice which was just melt in your mouth good, soup, salad, little sides and a broth you can pour over the eel and rice. It really was a steal and you will walk out full. The waiter came over at the end with some much needed complimentary hot green tea which was much appreciated and needed to help digest all the good food.

Comment: Cool & casual spot for a late night drink and/or a bite. The takoyaki, tuna tataki, and sushi were enjoyable enough, but this style of mentaiko pasta was a little too heavy on the kewpie mayo for my liking.

Comment: I went to Sake bar Hagi last Tuesday. Thats fun time to find the new spot of the Japanese restaurant. The atmosphere inside was cool. They decorated their restaurant with Japanese comics and they got nice stuff from Japan to make you feel like you have a drink after you finish work in Japan. They also got the arcade game in front of the restroom. For the food is little bit high sodium in everything. But the waitress told me that their chef went on vacation so the temporary chef but overall is great. Just highly recommend you to told your waitress when you order for low sodium food and you should be okay. We also have the unagi don which if I forgot to take a photo. Thats awesome dish too.If you looking for something to drink after work in Manhattan. This place is not the bad idea.

Comment: I went to a work dinner here and it was good for being a midtown restaurant. It’s right across from the Gershwin Theater (currently playing Wicked). The menu is HUGE! Lots and lots to offer. We had edemame, spicy tuna roll, tempura platter, Yaki Udon and Ramen. Everything was good and the beer was cold. The staff was attentive and the everything was very clean. They even have a pac man machine in the area by the bathrooms! Definitely a fun spot worth a try!

Comment: While they have moved to a newer and larger location, they still have the same amazing food they did when they were down in the basement. Very friendly staff and bring an appetite because the small plates will go on for as long as your stomach can manage them. Comment: Very nice Japanese restaurant. We waited about 20 mins to get in on a Saturday night. The service was friendly. I just feel the music was a bit too loud, I need to raise my voice to talk to the person sitting in front. The food is amazing, everything on the menu looks great. We ordered the dishes we tried in other countries, and the chef in this restaurant did a great job.

Comment: Glad theyre back. The original location was closed due to covid. The food and the service at this new place didnt miss a beat. Great food, great portions, and great service! Came here after a movie around 6:15 and just in time for happy hour. The drinks came out fast and were great. Everything was enough to share.Started woth the daikon mentaiko (cod roe) salad. Very refreshing. The flavors and the crunchy texture were fantastic. With a just a bit of mayo. First time trying this and did not disappoint. We had the mixed fry with squid, chicken, and spring. Spicy mayo went really well with lightly breaded texture. The grilled mackerel was a great dish for the sparkling high ball. The skin was crunchy and the markeral was flakey. A bit of lemon and shaved daikon really brings out the freshness. And finally we shared the special hagi ramen. Thick and creamy stock. With a touch of red ginger, scallions, and sprouts were as good any ramen place in town. The charsiu was soft with a hint of char. Hearty but not greasy! Finally desserts! The mango coconut pudding was light and not overly sweet. We also had the red bean mochi and strawberry mochi. All were super great. The service was attentive and quick. Drinks came out quickly. Food came out fast and piping hot. Utensils and tissues were replaced quickly. Water was filled regularly. Empty plates were taken timely.

Comment: Came after here after seeing a broadway show, great atmosphere and food came out super quick. we got spring rolls, the tempura set, karaage, and tonkotsu ramen. most of those things are fried, but didn’t feel heavy at all. the tempura was light and crisp, very fresh and the vegetables they selected were classic tempura veggies and shrimp. karaage was your average karaage, still good. id skip out on the spring rolls as you can tell they were made from frozen. tonkotsu ramen broth was nice and fatty, the pork was below average. got two sapporo beers for four bucks which was solid. overall, for the price and quality for the food it was great. easily shareable and i can see myself going here with friends in the future. they also had a fun pac-man machine by the bathrooms.

Comment: Finally got a chance to check out the new space on 51st. Same vibe as the previous spots, music pumps. The happy hour is the best deal for booze in midtown. The food options have changed a bit, didnt see karubi or mentai omelette available. The Karaage no longer has the diakon on top but still 🔥Ended up over ordering with the food as my eyes were larger than my stomach, still a great spot to chill.

Felt like an Izakaya in Tokyo - basically a bit of everything on the menu (sashimi, yaki tori, ramen, snacks like karaage and edamame).Nice selection of nihonshu (sake) also, including information in the menu on the region and flavour pallet, so we could make an informed choice.

Comment: This is simply one of the best bars, restaurants, izakayas in the city. A totally no-frills cool, relaxed place focused on having the best tasting food at a good price. Everything on the menu is immaculate. For me personally, the tonkatsu ramen is to die for, and tops even other ramen specialty shops. Best part is, there’s a big selection of sakes and other drinks, all at prices hard to find elsewhere.

Comment: Heading to a Broadway show and wanted some refreshment beforehand. I went here and had a fantastic experience. The hostess and server were both above average. The food was delivered in a timely fashion and the drinks were tasty and brought quickly even with the busy pre-theatre crowd. The place was very clean and had a nice atmosphere. I dont think Ive ever included pics of a restaurant bathroom before; however, the effort and cool factor of the tilework needs to be appreciated. It was completely unexpected. Im not even a fan of Mario games. Having a meal here and the positive experience both my friend and I had here pre-show was what makes dining out worth it. I completely give my seal of approval.

Comment: After all day of walking around the Central Park, we decided to go this restaurant as it was not busy and did not require a reservation. Honestly, we did not expect much at first. But once we got there we realized that we found a good spot. The staff were very accommodating. We frequently go to other sushi bars so we thought that their sushi portions seem small compared to other restaurants but the taste was absolutely top notch. We will most likely visit this restaurant if we ever head back to New York. I can highly recommend this place to anyone.

Comment: I was so grateful a place like this was open late. It was very close to where I was staying in Manhattan and I was searching out some comfort food after a long day of travel. I had quite the appetite so I started with tuna tataki and then ordered the Hagi Special Ramen. It looked great as it came to the table. I sipped the broth first and it wasn’t my favorite first sip. Something about the combination of the seafood and pork broth just didn’t jive for me. I agree that pork and seafood are normally a great combination flavor-wise but it didn’t quite hit the mark here. I still finished it anyways. I really like the ambience and what they’re trying to achieve with the Showa-era “under the bridge” izikaya vibe. Would be a great date spot.

Comment: We were a fan of Sake Bar Hagi from day one. When we found out that they moved to 51st street it was no brainer that we decided to visit them there. The feel when we came in was different from their previous location. There’s a sense of sophistication to the ambiance and we loved it from the off.At a glance, the new location is more spacious, they now have cubicle tables for a group of 4 (that we were fortunate to be seated on our first visit) we were told that the maximum stay is 2 hours but as always we never felt that we were rushed. We enjoyed our usual favorites like Kushiyaki; a set of grilled chicken breast and thigh, beef, shrimps and pork belly, Mentaiko fried rice; spicy codfish roe with egg and scallion, Karaage or fried chicken among the things that we ordered. And of course, we enjoyed it with our favorite Sake.We had a lovely dinner for our first visit to their new location and it wont be our last.

This is the one of Izakaya, that represents what Izakaya is, nihonji style. The prices are reasonable that worthily . ❤️ My highly recommendation !You need to try

Comment: If I could throw all the clout I have earned, stake my entire reputation as a six star Local Guide, I would without a doubt say this place is awesome and deserving of five stars and beyond. Delicious food, outstanding service. We had twelve courses - each dish was spectacular. The baby octopus, the fried oysters, the sushi, the omelette covered yaki soba (forget the name), everything, was exceptional. Excellent drinks, top quality and taste for actually pretty low price. Service was excellent as well, engaging, funny, friendly, fast and efficient and 100% accurate. On a fun street too. Just - if you are wondering if you should come here, the answer is a loud, unapologetic, resounding YES! I wish I would’ve taken pictures, but we ate it all so quickly (too quickly, that takoyaki was hot!) I missed my chance.

Comment: Solid bar food, some of the pictures and descriptions didnt match the food we got, but everything was tasty. The spicy fried chicken is more like a Chinese-American general Tzos saucy chicken, not the spicy Japanese style karaage I was expecting. Definitely recommend it if youre in the mood for that.I do not recommend the creamy mentaiko pasta, the flavor was bland.Decent outdoor seating but a few tables were closed because the roof was leaking onto them.Service was great!

Comment: I used to go to the old Sake Bar Hagi basement bar and I was sorely disappointed when I heard that they ended up not renewing their lease. However, I was extremely happy and surprised when I learned they had a second location! We had such a wonderful time. The menu isnt as extensive as the old joint but the food was just as great. Tempura-battered asparagus and pork belly! Chicken Gizzards! Double-fried pizza, fantastic sushi and sashimi, all sorts of stuff. We ended up staying for the entire happy hour last Monday, which is a really good deal, especially if you like sake. Genth and Jane were some of the funniest, friendliest bartenders Ive met in a long time, and they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and special. I cant wait to tell everyone that Hagi is back! Thank you so much!

Comment: If you have more than 4 people in your party, you may have to wait or consider going elsewhere. Food was very good. The host was NOT helpful. We had 8 people and we were willing to sit apart from each other and we literally had to talk him into letting sit at two empty tables. He kept telling us we could put our names in and come back, but he couldnt gauarantee us a table. It literally made no sense. It was almost as if he didnt want us to eat there. Food was amazing. Service was so so. We kept going through dishes and they kept bringing us more food. We basically kept giving empty plates to the bartender because we kept running out of room. Foods good. My party of 2 was seated right away and shortly after, a number of tables came in. Food came out quickly and was really delicious. We had the Mentaiko fried rice, takoyaki, sashimi salad, and soy garlic chicken wings. Not much for Saki but judging from the menu, they have one of the most expansive selections in the city. Ive always judged how authentic a place is by the amount of customers are native to that country. The restaurant is usually usually packed with Japanese on most nights ive been there. The prices are actually pretty good for being close to tourist central(Time Square).Definitely recommend especially for quick meals, appetizers, etc..

The C set was probably our least favorite because it had just garlic or roasted nuts. The okonomiyaki is a must order. Comment: I came here on a Thursday night for dinner. You can make a reservation through Opentable which is nice. We ordered the mentai pasta, sautéed pork belly and kimchee, and the kaarage ponzu. I wanted to try the pizza tempura but it wasnt available. The mentai pasta was my favorite dish. It had spicy cod roe and cream sauce, so delicious. The pork belly and kimchee was good as well, a lot of pieces of pork belly. The kaarage was okay, I felt they put too much ponzu which made the fried chicken soggy. The portions were rather large compared to other Japanese izakaya places. I think we couldve been fine with just the 2 dishes for the 2 of us. For dessert, we ordered the taiyaki (red bean fish waffle) with ice cream. They didnt have green tea ice cream so we got red bean ice cream. The taiyaki was grilled so it was warm when we got it and the ice cream portion was large. A really delicious dessert. All the food was tasty and the service was great. I saw they had happy hour Sundays to Wednesdays 5-7pm so Ill come back to try that out.

Comment: Good, authentic izakaya-style food. More spacious and better service than its more well-known location between Broadway and 6th, but surprisingly never crowded. Come before it gets popular and requires reservations

Comment: The food is fantastic and so is the service. $12 pitchers of Sapporo and loads of delicious Asian comfort food at very reasonable prices.I could end the review here but I have to add something that won our patronage for life (Im sitting in the restaurant even as I write this, by the way):My wife and I consider ourselves to be adventurous foodies, and she decided to order the fried chicken gizzards as an appetizer because we had never had it. When it arrived, somehow the texture didnt hit us right even though the batter it was fried in was very tasty. We told the waiter it wasnt our thing, but we are willing to pay for it. Later when the tab came they informed us that they wouldnt charge us for it anyway! There are so many restaurants in this city that treat their customers like an inconvenience and its nice to find a spot with wonderful service and cheery attitudes!

Comment: Same menu as the original but a little more modern style for the modern new yorker, the staff is really nice and caring, it is more like a restaurant than bar compared to the original Hagi in 49, the food is really good as always!

Comment: This spot offers the Izakaya menu during lunch time, which is awesome to me! Even though they are located in Hells Kitchen, with their delightful menu, they are the Heavens Kitchen. The inside was nice and large, much larger than it looks from outside. We wanted to try several kinds of dishes here, so we ordered a few things to share, including Pizza Tempura. I know. They did good job at all the dishes, other than one - Ebiten Kushi. They forgot the spicy mayonnaise, so we had to flag down our waitress to get it.The waitress was a Japanese lady, who was very kind and polite, but it felt like she needed more help to take care of all the tables (which wasnt that many) with proper attention. However, I have to mention, there was one table two older American ladies, who had many questions about the menu. The most offerings are authentic, and also very unique. I would definitely go back there fore more of their fun and tasty creations! Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.
