Comment: Fantastic meal! Perhaps theyve been reading these reviews and course corrected because we had excellent service, the waitstaff was very attentive and helpful, and they are also now serving tap water. The sushi and sashimi omakase included several heavenly pieces of otoro and the price was amazing for the quality.

Comment: Absolutely love Sushi Katsuei Brooklyn!!! Their omakase is my favorite meal in all of NYC!!! Every piece is prepared so originally (fish paired with plum paste and a shiso leaf, for example!) - It’s the only meal where I literally smile every bite!!! Also, we love the staff!! The server Q and sushi chef John and our favorites, but everyone is so wonderful, hardworking and kind!! Cannot recommend Sushi Katsuei more!!! 🤗

Comment: Really good quality sushi and the omakase menu provides great options. The service was great and hospitable. This is a great sushi spot if you don’t want to travel into the Manhattan and want to stay in Brooklyn. And the price is amazing. You can probably find cheaper, but the quality won’t be as good. Definitely recommend bringing family and friends here if they enjoy sushi at a good price.

Comment: Omakase was reasonably priced but more importantly, their fish selection is very good and very fresh. We got many fish from Japan and fish that is not normally served elsewhere. Their Saba, sawara are all house cured and prepared and it is so good. I cant wait to go back to this place!

Comment: The consensus among reviews is that this is the best deal Omakase you will find in Brooklyn, and that service isn’t great. Both points deserve more explanations.First, there are a few Omakase options: the regular nigiri Omakase for $55, and the sashimi + nigiri for $75. They also have an open style Omakase mixing seasonal fish with some of the regular pieces. This last option is available at market price, which was $108 in our case for 12 pieces. We took the open style Omakase and didn’t regret it. The fish was super fresh with a smooth texture, something we haven’t been used to on the East coast (sorry!). The seasoning in each sushi was also original (seaweed, yuzu, scallions), which was more in line with what we expected from an Omakase. Special mention to the sea urchin, which is always hit-or-miss. In this case, it was excellent. One disappointing note though: in almost every sushi, the seasoning was slightly overpowering the dish, making it hard to taste all the subtlety of the fish. This imbalance was a problem, but despite this issue, the overall menu was quite good, and 12 sushis was enough for a dinner. As for the service, it was actually fine. Our waiter was nice, and described every sushi with lots of details. In the end, was it the best sushi of our life? No, but who cares, it was really good sushi, and definitely as good, if not better than some pretentious options that charge twice as much in Manhattan (*ahem Yasuda*).

Comment: So unlike some other reviewers, I do not come from a background of significant knowledge about Japan, but I have eaten in some pretty high-end sushi restaurants in the US. I think this place gets 5 stars for food quality, freshness and presentation. Service and ambiance get maybe 3.5-4, but that fish was great!. We had omakase menu and chef gave us a beautiful selection. But I think the most amazing thing about this place (and the real reason for my 5* rating) is the price. We had dinner for three at about 1/3 the price of the high end places and the fish itself was just as good. Sure, the surroundings arent as luxe, but hence the price. Edit: 2021 I will not return since they do not do online reservations. Apparently to get a reservation one must phone or email and I assuredly cannot do that.

Comment: Incredibly high quality omakase for a very reasonable price ($55 for Sushi, $75 for Sushi + Sashimi. While I highly recommend this joint for that reason alone, the manager is extremely rough around the edges, to the point of being a bit rude. The servers, however, are incredibly kind.Expect high quality fish at a reasonable price point, and a Spartan atmosphere with a less-than-friendly manager.

Comment: Had a kanpachi collar app, and multiple nigiri from chūtoro to kohada and unagi. Pieces are on the smaller side, but the fish is perfectly cut and exceedingly delicious, seasoned appropriately and sumptuous. My only regret is not having more time to taste more of the menu. Its been a few years since I visited Katsuei and Im just as happy as I was on my first visit.

Comment: Excellent quality sushi and great experience overall. Was a bit annoyed that they do not serve tap water and instead make you purchase wasteful plastic bottles for water. This is NYC with some of the cleanest tap water, a little ridiculous if you ask me, knowing full well they have both a tap and glasses at the restaurant. If they change this, would be a 5 star experience for sure.

Comment: A wonderful sushi restaurant with high quality fish. We did the market price omakase and each piece was delightful, prepared with a little touch (e.g. amberjack with ponzu sauce -- if youre looking for more of a plain fish and rice sushi experience, this is not the right spot). The pacing was good, with 12 pieces total but brought out 4 at a time. I would actually have preferred a slightly smaller option (10 pieces) but didnt think to ask if I could be accommodated. I should note that we started with a very good mushroom appetizer, which I would happily eat by the bowlful over noodles sometime. Sake perfectly paired our meal. Service was attentive and friendly.

Comment: Really high quality sushi. But while the omakase was delicious, it was meager: 12 pieces of fish for >$100. For me, an omakase means getting to sit down and knowing youre going to be taken on an adventure by the chef, with kitchen and sushi bar items mixed. At Katsuei, the focus is on the - admittedly delectable - sushi. All extras are just that - extra.

Comment: The interior is clean and relaxing. Sushi Katsuei is packed. Luckily we made a reservation ahead of time and were sat in the other room.We all ordered the sushi and sashimi omakase which took a while to be served. We were pretty hungry by the time the sashimi arrived. I enjoyed the oyster. The toro was not as melt-in-your-mouth as I was expecting. The rest of the omakase was, however, well-paced. The Santa Barbara uni was so sweet! I wish I could have gotten more. The rest of the sushi pieces did not really stand out to me.4 stars for the service and the availability of omakase in Brooklyn is great. 3 stars for the actual food because nothing really stood out to me and for the price. Sushi Katsueis omakase is pricier than most places in Manhattan.

Comment: Wonderful sushi in a casual atmosphere, in a lovely little neighborhood restaurant. The number of sushi chefs makes it clear how much fish is served here. Its great quality sushi. We found the sushi deluxe with some extra rolls, and miso soup, to be the best value.

Comment: Made advance reservations and went there for the sushi/sushimi omakase. Service was very prompt and attentive. Prices were in line with other higher grade sushi restaurants in NYC. Obviously, the grade of fish drives the pricing to a large degree and the quality was superb. Note the fat in the otoro and the color of the Uni. The real magic is in the seasoning and balance and their sushi chefs have great skills here. It’s almost perfect - to the point they don’t supply you with soy sauce or wasabi and warn you not to use soy sauce with most pieces. In a nutshell: this is a highly recommended place in Brooklyn that you should make the effort to visit.

Comment: Quality of food and service is very good, but their omakase options are underwhelming for their price point. They tried to tell me that California uni is an exotic offering. LOL Go for your routine sushi meal and enjoy! Can get quite busy so walk-in service is hit or miss, and reservations are helpful.

Comment: In a word, amazing. The omakase though expensive offers a unique and delicious culinary experience, a symphony of seafood! A knowledgeable staff and relaxing atmosphere makes for a perfect date night spot. The only fault I found is that I felt personally that the appetizers where subpar, the fried chicken and tuna avocado bowl fell flat. Overall though I would return in a heartbeat and look forward to finding a reason to go back.

The place can get quite loud and waiting can take a while so it’s best to make reservations. Waiters were very friendly, attentive, and very knowledgable with the menu. It can get a bit pricey but the food makes up for it! Would come again!

Comment: This was our first Omakase and our first melt-in-mouth sushi. The quality of the cuts used and the generous portion at the price level makes this Omakase a steal for mid range sushi. For $52 we got 8 pieces of sushi and a handroll. On the side we ordered octopus tempura, california maki roll and a shrimp tempura roll. All of the food was above excellent but the Omakase sushi was divine. The only meh pieces were the white fish and the uni (California origins unfortunately on that night as they didnt have the Japanese variety). The chef was very clear with the origin of each piece (more than half were Japanese) and the dressing used. The pieces dressing for some pieces was a bit overwhelming especially the ones with Wasabi but my wife managed to eat her pieces despite the fact she hates spicy food and wasabi in general. The service and the rythm were on point, explanatory enough without being overwhelming or too fast. Most importantly no pushing to buy expensive drinks or Sake, but willing to recommend or explain any option on the menu. The only downside is that it is a relatively small Omakase menu so the chef was preparing different pieces to others that looked exceptional that we wished we had too. In the future it would be great to have an option for 12 or 15 pieces Omakase at a higher price point to let the customers try all of the different cuts available.

Comment: This place ruined sushi for me. Visited about 3 weeks ago. Had the omakase and a few al a carte items. SOOOOOO goood. The fatty tuna was one of my faves. Really a huge diff in quality versus an all you can eat place. Which brings us to...Fast forward to today. Had all you can eat sushi at my favorite place and it just tasted like metal and jelly consistency. I know the quality cant be, and shouldnt be compared, and this is also a cheaper omakase but still.... To ruin the enjoyment of huge quantities of food with just a few dishes is a huge accomplishment to me.

Comment: Went for my bfs birthday and had a terrific time at the sushi bar getting omakase (sushi & sashimi). The fish was expertly prepared (one had a teeny tiny dollop of soshito pepper sauce and it was dynomite). The tuna they had last night in particular was a great balance of astoundingly fresh and fatty flavors--we ordered an extra! Very friendly service and the ambiance isnt dark with loud house music which you can find all too often at sushi bars around town. The things outside the omakase we got all looked pretty good as they were sent out too!

Comment: Ive been to a good amount of nice sushi restaurants in NYC. Nobu, Koi, etc... And this is by far hands down one of the best authentic sushi experiences Ive ever been to. We got the sushi omakase, which was approximately 9 pieces of ~bespoke~ sushi. My god. Every single one was delicious. A great example was the Uni (sea urchin). I have never enjoyed uni sushi, until today. Damn boi. It was a treat. If youre in the area and want to spend a decent amount, do this. You wont be disappointed.

Comment: Pros: A very cool sushi 🍣 experience. The freshest cuts of sushi at the bar. Round after round. No soy sauce, spicy mayo or wasabi. The chefs lather up the sushi before they serve it on your plate to taste amazing. You do get ginger on your plate if you want to change it up a little.Cons: It’s a bit pricey and it felt more like a tasty appetizer than a meal. They only do cold sake there if you like it served warm.

Comment: We got a seat at the bar and ordered the open ended omakase. Every dish served was amazing and had its own mix of flavors and textures. Unlike traditional Japanese omakase this place is made to serve a large amount of people so while the chef does tell you what fish it is and what goes on or into it they dont go into detail explain in depth or help new people learn to eat real sushi. That being said because they serve a large number of people it helps keep the price down and is the cheapest omakase Ive been to in the US. The service was great and food was amazing I highly suggest this place and will be returning many times.

Comment: I first tried sushi 30 years ago when it started to become a popular eat-out thing to do, served by the Japanese guys. It was really good. As time went by and cheap Chinese restaurants started popping up, I lost the sense of real taste and the price became a valid difference. And then we visited Sushi Katsui. Yes, the price difference was significant, but also the forgotten melt-in-the-mouth sushi was amazing. Just the right amount of tasty rise, perfectly balanced with the amount of fish on it. The odd thing I noticed right away was the amount of soy sauce they brought in a dish to the table, and not the whole bottle for you to pour. I was going to ask for more, but stopped by the sudden feeling of Japanese etiquette overtaking me. I was surprised how little soy sauce I needed. The whole experience was quite nice, but definitely a bit more expensive than Im used to. What Im worried about now is that I dont think I could ever go back to my old, cheap places. Ill definitely have to go back and maybe make a reservation way ahead of the visit.

Comment: One of the best sushi restaurants we have ever been to. Everything we had has set a new bar for standard favorites. Uni from Maine was particularly memorable.

Comment: Best omakase Ive ever had in NYC!! It reminds me so much of the omakase Ive had in Japan at Sushi Dai in the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo (minus the 2 hour waiting time). To really get a unique experience, sit at the sushi bar for the omakase.

Comment: Really great Omakase here, pricey, but not out of line. Atmosphere is nice, but not fancy. Good upscale date spot somewhere between casual and formal.

Comment: The Omakase was amazing, so fresh and delicious! They bring them out to you in separate plates of 4 - 5 pieces at a time and tell you about each piece. The waiter was very quick at noticing my plate was done and had the next plate ready within a minute.

Comment: The absolute best sushi in NYC, Brooklyn and beyond. Worth its weight in gold (or whatever is the most prized metal). Ive had the pleasure of dining here multiple times over the past year and a half and have never left feeling anything less than sublime. The freshest, most delicious fish Ive ever had. The service is remarkable, the environment lovely and everyone involved with this institution outstandingly first class through and through. Everything- from their salads to their rice is delicious. Impeccably fresh and flavorful. Each bite is its own parade of joy. I dont know how they do it but every piece of sushi is its own island of absolute delight and happy dances.Could not recommend it more. Run and make your reservation. It will be well worth it.
