Comment: Sushi from NYCs old school sushiya, Sushi of Gari. It once it held a one Michelin star but not anymore to my knowledge. It is definitely one of the restaurants that started the sushi culture in the early 1990s for New Yorkers and still keeps its class to some level. For sushi perhaps, I have had better looking ones, however, the full umami flavor from its aged fresh fish was another level. You can copy the look, but the flavor was unique and this place had that depth. Of course out of their own pride or dignity, they are too cool to offer miso soup or a maki along with the nigiri. Nonetheless, I think you still need to try it at least once. I personally found their sautéd tomato garnish over the salmon nigiri very interesting. It was such a surprise how much umami flavor came out from pairing the salmon and tomato. Also, the funniest part is that the $140 sushi omakase comes with fresh wasabi, but the $40 something chirashi comes with cheap soulless dry wasabi lol...you definitely get what you pay for here....or a bit less.Speaking of the chirashi don, even though you are getting low quality, gloomy wasabi, the fish on top of the sushi rice are still very pronounced. The snapper was aged well, as I chewed a few times its flavor hit my tongue. For the akami, I usually feel that it is bland compared to other tuna cuts, but not from here. It is definitely a nice and economical way to taste aged fresh fish flavors.I see many reviews of disappointment with the food or service. However, it is worth trying in my opinion.

Comment: By far one of the best high-end sushi restaurants in NYC. It’s always crowded so be sure to call and get a reservation. I rave about this spot all the time. The omakase is worth it. Best spicy tuna rolls in manhattan. They have some gourmet items like truffle and quail egg sushi and stewed tomato’s on salmon. Their salmon sashimi is also marinated so well. The toro is unbelievable. Who knew sushi can be so good. This is a must for any sushi lover. It’s crowded every day of the week because it is so good. They have a nice Japanese beer and saki selection as well. As for taste, this is top notch. I try to go as often as possible.

Comment: Solid sushi spot. Omakase comes out all in one go and the pieces are good quality. Perhaps a little pricey - if you pay a little more you can get some great quality sushi in other parts of Manhattan. Still worth checking out if you order a la carte.

Comment: Very nice Japanese restaurant! Their food is so fresh and delicious! We usually order Fatty Tuna with Salmon! SO DELICIOUS!!!! Ive been only a few times, but each time has been outstanding. Everything is so flavorful! Its very pricey but i understand that since most of the food is imported from Japan and its authentic! I recommended this place though be careful you can spend a few big bucks here!

Comment: Sushi of Gari is my favorite sushi spot that isnt over the top expensive. I come every couple months and they never let me down. Ive done the tasting menu a few times and for two people will run you ~$400. if you order off the regular menu, a good amount of food and a small sake will run you ~$200. Lately i just order off the regular menu since you get a good selection anyway (and i love fatty tuna). Eating here will probably spoil you and you wont be able to order sushi off seamless anymore.

Comment: Pretty nice, the price are very reasonable, sushi are pretty fancy, yet fish quality is pretty good. For 65 dollar, 10 course Omakase. it is worthy. After all, it use to be a Michelin 1 star. And I think it still deserves the star. 😁😁😁 I didnt take photo, but you can find more on Yelp or Google isnt it.

Comment: Ive been coming here since I was a little girl, and it is still the best Japanese restaurant Ive ever been to. People complain about the price, but its literally the same price yours typically pay for sushi in a Japanese restaurant in the bronx, except its high quality. If people want supermarket priced sushi they should buy sushi from a supermarket. The service is always excellent, the dessert options interesting, and while the omakase IS expensive, it is well worth it for a special occasion

Comment: This place is the real deal. The people who work there are super friendly and will likely force samples onto you, like the Italian grandmother you never had. The meats and cheeses are delicious, obviously, but the premade things in the display cases are also really great. They also make huge amazing sandwiches (Sal, Kris, and who?).The prices are also very reasonable. I recently used a $20 LivingSocial certificate, and walked out with a bag filled with meats, cheeses, and olives (which were all a hit at the party I brought them to).

Comment: Damn, what a sandwich! After a strong recommendation from Long Islands own Drew A. I finally went to Sal, Kris, & Charlies. I got The Bomb, a colossal sandwich that has brought kings to their knees. Containing seemingly every meat in the place, this unholy concoction of flora and fauna somehow colludes into a delicious sandwich WELL worth the $9 pricetag. When I saw how big the sandwich was, I asked them to cut it into thirds. I got three meals out of this sandwich! I could have shared it with two friends!Sal, Kris, & Charlies deli is an unassuming little deli off the main road that makes delicious sandwiches at a great price. Open wide!

Comment: The original Gari location – there are now four throughout the city – still serves up one of New York’s top omakases, complete with its signature toppings. Yes, there is not much to admire about the décor and sushi purists may turn their noses up at the thought of jalapeños, truffle oil and tomato in their sushi, but we ask: HAVE YOU TRIED THEIR TORO WITH TOFU SAUCE? Apart from the omakase – which really is a must – go for the spicy shrimp tempura cut roll.

Comment: Always wanted to try Sushi of Gari and happened to be around the area for lunch, so gave it a try. Had the Ume Chirashi @ $36. I had always enjoyed Morimotos chirashi the best and wanted to try other high end varieties. This did not disappoint, although it is slightly different than the one offered @ Morimoto. The fish were all fantastically fresh and the rice is cooked perfectly. Everything was quite excellent, but the pricing seems more premium than even Yasuda. Would need to visit the original location to judge the Gari group as a whole.

Comment: Get omakese and sit at the sushi bar. Definitely more worth it that way. They can almost read your reaction and adjust what you get next. Delicious!

Comment: The omakase is definitely a must try. A bit expensive, but the ingredients are incredibly fresh. The sear toro almost melts in your mouth. The meal is about $90 for a 12 piece sushi set, but its definitely worth the experience. Other than the omakase, their tuna samplers is also a good choice. This is the original location. The place is small and the seats are not as spacious as other two locations, but it feels cozy and intimate (best for group size 1~2). If going for omakase, try to get a bar seat. It is a feast on its own to witness the creation of those delicious nigiri.

Comment: Midtown wests neighborhood sushi bar makes one glad to be a new yorker, because one probably has to travel thousands of miles in any direction to find a neighborhood fishery like this one. pop in and have a taste of tokyo, absent the irradiated water.

Comment: Fabulous neighborhood sushi which is great for last-minute michelin-starred cuisine. the nigiri is a bit pricey though at $5 for one piece.
