Comment: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. Dont listen to those liars that say this place is bad. It is my go-to sushi restaurant because it tastes delicious, its always fresh, look beautiful, and its cheap! Although the wait is a little longer than usual, its WELL worth the wait. Everyone know thats the best restaurants are the mom and pop ones with a kid doing their homework at a table on the back. This is an authentic restaurant. I come here all the time because the server and sushi chef are so kind and friendly. Highly recommend.

Comment: Best sushi Rochester. Everything was fresh and delicious. The spicy salmon roll was my favorite. It was my husbands birthday and our server must have overheard because at the end of our meal she came out with a delicious tempura variety dessert complete with candles. It was so thoughtful and such a nice treat at the end of a great meal.

Comment: Honestly, moved here from California and Nevada. This place is 25$ for all you can eat that’s insanely cheap and no time limit is crazy. The food is phenomenal!! My sister and I eat here all the time, it’s our favorite spot now!

Comment: Please dont be scared of the decor. The sushi is the best in Rochester. My wife and I have searched high and low for a local place with high quality sushi. We have finally found it. One Monday night I decided to give it a shot. I went in and it was dark with no customers to be found. I ordered 8 rolls while not feeling very confident about it. The chef and owner came out and started making our sushi. I had a long conversation with him. He has been a sushi chef for 30+ years and 11 years ago he opened his own restaurant. You can taste the 30+ years of experience. The fish was amazingly fresh and delicious. You can tell he puts all his time and effort into high quality fish. Its safe to say this is our new spot. Cant wait to go back. Give it a try, you wont regret it.

Comment: Have known about this place for a while, my husband and I would always come out to the plaza location for millennium games. Finally decided to give it a try today and couldnt be more satisfied!! We ordered the all you can eat sushi and everything was top notch!! If youre they type of person who needs like one critique, the only thing I got for ya is that our sodas were a little flat, but mostly due to them getting to the end of the tap lolz. 10/10 will absolutely eat here again!! 🖤

Comment: This place is phenomenal value for all you can eat. All of the food is delicious and well made and the staff is good. My one critique is they use the nice big shrimp for sushi but not for teriyaki. For teriyaki they use these tiny shrimp. If they used bigger shrimp it would be better but Im sure that would make the cost much higher. I loved their teriyaki steak and teriyaki salmon and they had great BBQ eel. The gyoza were not that great and avocado salad wasnt great but theres plenty of other phenomenal options on the menu. I would recommend goin with a large appetite

Comment: This place is fabulous!!! As other people have said it is a wait for food, but theres only 2 employees and it is definitely worth the wait. I usually get the all you can eat (which is now $25 but thats still a steal in my opinion) I also love the crab Rangoons and its just one of my favorite places to eat!!You will not regret the chance to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere while your food is freshly prepared. Definitely my favorite shishi place!!!

Comment: Werent exactly sure what to expect from the reviews, but we were quite pleasantly surprised by this nice little sushi place with all you can eat sushi!We were greeted immediately, seated and served drinks, salad and soup as soon as we decided to go with the AYCE option. We turned in our slip of sushi items as the soup was delivered and the first rolls were brought out right after our last sips of the umami rich miso broth.The sushi was tasty and fresh, we ate our fill and savored every bite.The Finishing touch to the meal was a refreshing scoop of green tea ice cream.Very enjoyable! Comment: This is THE BEST sushi Ive had in a very long time! The maestro (chef) had been perusing for 37 years, and it shows. The warm service, relaxed atmosphere and carefully prepared food balances all together in harmony in this little place. The sushi is fantastic, no one flavor overpowering the other, the subtle temp differences are prefect in the mouth... even the rice is subtle. Fluffy and well blended!

Comment: Food was mostly good and service was fine. The chef was the one also serving us as we got there just after it opened (weds 11:45am). We were the only people in there for about an hour of it and we could see him prepping the food also. He was attentive. We got the sushi and sashimi for 2. It was more than enough for both of us. My minor complaint was the white fish sashimi was a touch frozen. However overall, it was a good experience.

Comment: Rewriting my review 3 years later to say taste of Japan is the best sushi place in Rochester! Fu and Lin go above and beyond and are absolutely amazing. I’ve been eating there for 7-8 years now and not once have I ever had a bad dish! I recently went to celebrate my birthday and they really went above and beyond!

Comment: A small, family run restaurant. Fu and his lovely wife Lin were a joy to meet. I could hear people at every table saying “Wow” as they were eating. Fu can be seen preparing the sushi from a work area at the back area of the dining room. People called out to him from their tables to compliment him. Fu very humbly shared that he has been a sushi chef since 1986. My daughter and her husband are long-time sushi fans. I’m still on the “nothing raw please” and “California Roll” level. The all-you-can-eat sushi is $21. It includes your choice of an appetizer, a generous bowl of miso soup (which was amazing), endless (made to order) sushi, and a choice of dessert. I tasted my daughters homemade green tea ice cream l. So creamy! I had the tempura fried cheese cake, and possibly the best cheesecake experience I’ve ever had.This place is worth the wait. Go when you aren’t in a rush. They are a sweet and humble couple who take every order seriously. Very impressed!

Comment: I’ve eaten at Taste of Japan many times, and the food, especially the all-you-can-eat meal, never disappointed me. The food quality is comparable to what you would expect from a good Japanese restaurant. With the $19.9 all-you-can-eat option, you will get complimentary hot tea, miso soup, and salad with an Asian salad dressing that’s not too sweet. In addition, you can order anything on the menu under the Appetizer and dessert sections. On a separate sheet of paper, from which there are various fresh sushi selections you can select.I’m not giving it a five star, because there are areas that the restaurant can improve on. As others have complained, the restaurant is probably short on staff, so the wait time is unexpectedly long. If you are in a rush, I wouldn’t suggest you go there. Expect to make at least 75 min for a satisfying all-you-can-eat sushi experience.

Comment: Went in last night, and they were SLAMMED! There wasnt a single table unoccupied and they were working hard to accommodate their pick up orders. It was a phenomenal experience. The staff is all extremely pleasant, the food is superb. I 100% suggest the Tempura, simply divine. The Sushi, delicious! We even ordered a roll that was entirely of the Chefs creation and it was exquisite. The entire experience was around three hours, but it gave me ample time to enjoy all of the food that came out and actually digest it as I went. If you want a 45 minute meal, during a peak period, I would not reccommend. However, if you want a dining experience that is well worth the time and the wait and to interact with truly lovely people, then I cannot reccommend this enough.

Comment: I purchased a large order of sushi for takeout during Covid (Nov 2020) and the woman there was such a pleasant person to deal with! She came off as gentle and kind and I experienced no rudeness at all.The rolls were large for the price and you can see that a lot of work went into them, all tightly rolled with little garnishes on top.Unfortunately, there was a couple problems with the order. The first is small, I asked for no wasabi or pickled ginger and there was some in the containers. That problem is fixed easily, but the second problem isnt as easy to fix. Some rolls had spicy mayo added to them when the menu did not list that as an ingredient. I purposely avoid spicy rolls so this was an unpleasant surprise. I have never had a Rainbow Roll that was spicy before. I am not sure if there was so mix up taking the order or if this is a chefs personalization, but for people that do not like spicy mayo, I advise you to note that in your order.Overall, I would eat here again, but I would reiterate my orders to ensure the rolls are as expected.

Comment: In the days before COVID-19 Id go in for the all you can eat sushi special - its a terrific deal - appetizer, miso soup, salad, sashimi, sushi, sushi rolls, and dessert for $20. As its take out only until the stay at home condition is lifted, Ive been ordering some of the specialty rolls - my goodness! what Ive been missing! The specialty rolls are incredible in taste, quality, and variety. When I can once again sit at the sushi bar and enjoy Chef Fus work, Ill be hard pressed to decide between the all you can eat special and a la carte.

Comment: Fu is the chef and he is very friendly and makes some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. The all you can eat is 100% worth it. This is Osaka or California Rollin. This is good stuff. Also comes with appetizer and soup and salad. 🤯 However it’s very slow. We showed up at 5 and were the only ones there and it took about 2 hours of time. So great food great price and very slow. Will be back!

Fu and his wife are great people which makes the trip even more worthwhile.People complaining are either full sized families that bombard places and demand satisfaction or people with their man thongs in a bunch. It is a small family run restaurant [More of a bistro I would say but..] and sushi takes time. Most places have a chef strictly for sashimi and one for the rolls. Fu is doing that solo along side his family so to those who demand satisfaction, I am impatient and very hot headed for sure but even my hard headed self understands that if you want good food you will wait for it.Long story short. Like all places things happen we are all human so if you have had a bad experience for some reason go back and give it another shot I believe that you will be surprised at this hole in the wall nestled right in Henrietta.

Let me begin by telling you that the most important ingredient it sushi is rice. He nailed the rice in everyway imaginable. It had the perfect. Amount of vinegar,sugar and the rice still retained it shape after a dip in soy sauce. The several fishes, shrimps and octopus we ordered we extremely fresh.In terms of wait time I can not complain like the rest of the reviews. There was two other tables with us when we arrived and we were served in a timely manner. I still remember before I heard of this place, I drove 30 mins to Osaka Sushi which also offers all-you-can-eat and for some reason is more well-known than Taste of Japan. The result is - let me just say - not worth the drive. Then I found this place and absolutely love it. The sushi is almost too good for all-you-can-eat. The chef who is also the owner is quite talkative very personable and accommodating. The waitress who I think is his wife is always smiling and polite, very Japanese. The whole place is quiet and clean. The only downside is that the chef makes all sushi himself, so it can be a bit slow when there are a lot of guests. But hey, its all-you-can-eat, I dont mind it being slow at times :)

Comment: Having just moved from the San Diego, where I knew many of the AYCE places, including sushi, I had to find one in Rochester for some post workout meals.The restaurant is located in the corner of a strip small with a neon OPEN sign outside. The windows had the curtains up, so you couldnt see much inside, so it looked a bit dingy.Inside, it wasnt that much different unfortunately. The place is dimly lit, though the tables are well spread out and separated by bamboo curtains to make the place seem spacious. Its ambiance is quiet and quaint, if you are looking for that, then thats great. However, you will be disappointed if you are looking for a lively environment.The service was very friendly, but extremely slow. There were only 3 tables at the time, and it took about 40 minutes to get us through our appetizers, soup, and salad, before the main sushi entrees came out. I was getting very aggravated at that point considering that it looked like a slow night, it shouldnt take so long. As we progressed through our meal, I came to find out that sushi was prepared at a much quicker rate compared to the rolls, so that improved my mood. On the topic of food, it was tasty and right around what I was expecting given the area, price, and AYCE option.Our waiter, who seems like the co-owner (small family run place) was, as I said, friendly. It was enjoyable talking to him and getting to know the restaurants history.Conclusion: Its worth coming here for the food, and perhaps if you like the quiet setting.
