Comment: Delciious onigirazu! Definitely worth the wait. The outpost is a humble setup with no settings inside. The onigirazu is made fresh so you will wait outside for 5-10 mins. Got the original fried chicken, karage with mayo. Will go back to try the other ones.

Comment: Me and a friend went here not too long ago because we were dying to try onigirazu for the first time and it did not disappoint, i ordered the tuna salad with egg and my friend ordered the karaage onigirazu, its a small little shop but they serve some good food, the service was good and food came quick despite there being a decent amount of people

Comment: A very charming neighborhood restaurant, expect to wait a bit in line because it is a victim of its success. But the wait once ordered is not long at all.Its quite rare to find gems like that, the sandwiches are quite tasty, the food is fresh and you can feel it, the prices are affordable, the service is attentive. There is nothing wrong with eating there. We have to fight to keep these restaurants that respect their customers alive in a world filled with fast food of all kinds.

Comment: I tried the salmon avocado onigirazu and the hot hojicha latte. The hojicha had a strong, nutty, aromatic flavor and was around $6. The riceball was super messy to eat, but the salmon and avocado paired well together and was filling and fresh. The only issue was the surplus of wasabi, but it did taste authentic. Recommend! :3

Comment: We went there early afternoon on a Thursday, hoping to beat the crowds we anticipate would be there from the TikTok posts about it. There was a small line that was even longer than it should be because some tourists (I hope)took an obnoxiously long time ordering their food despite the fact that there was a line out the door and it’s cold out. Then you have to wait outside for about 15 mins until it’s ready. After all that, besides schlepping to the East Village for it (how is the East Village so far away from everything..? It doesn’t even make sense), I was grumpy and ready to be underwhelmed. But it was warm and pretty tasty. We got the miso tuna avocado one. My daughter got a warm matcha. She said it was a perfectly fine matcha, nothing transcendent. IF you are in the neighborhood, the line is not atrocious and the weather not too awful, it’s worth it.

Comment: Super small place that can be easy to miss unless you see the long line of people waiting to order. I got the karaage chicken with garlic chili oil and the tofu nugget onigiri and they were both SO good. The wait time can be a little long but it’s definitely worth it because the food comes out warm and made with love.I would’ve tried the matcha but I biked and didn’t want to drink anything but everyone was getting them and they looked so good and are made fresh so I’ll have to go back soon!

Comment: I ordered one beef and ginger and one plum miso egg onigirazu. Both are so delicious but I think there is quite alot of rice ratio to filling. I do also apricate that the food was made on the spot fresh so it will take a little time to get ready. There is limited space and seating so it is more of a grab and go spot. This is a good snack/ quick lunch to go.

Comment: Spotted this place on Instagram and decided to give it a try. The place is tiny, making it more suitable for takeout. Opted for the mackerel roll, and it was undeniably delicious. The flavors were on point, and the quality of the ingredients shone through. If youre in the mood for a quick and tasty Japanese street food fix, this place is worth a visit.

Comment: The matcha from @tokuyamatcha was excellent and warmed me up entirely. So nice to have a cosy spot with fresh made onigirazu rice balls!Really cute little place but it’s basically impossible to eat there so expect to have to takeaway. Quite pricey for the portion, but is something that I’d crave once in a while!

Comment: The food here is really tasty and made to order. When I grabbed my order it was still hot because it was made right in front of me. I love how fresh it was. I had originally come here after a food instagrammer had mentioned this was a good place to eat!I got the chicken karaage with chili oil crisp onigiri along with the iced matcha latte with oat milk to go. I think the food was made relatively quickly. I really loved the matcha! I highly recommend!I paid about $20.40 in total for both the onigiri and the drink. I was definitely full, but it might be on the slightly more expensive side for those who want to grab a quick snack. The shop itself has a traditional Japanese ramen stall shop feel. It can be a little small, but if you wait outside, it’s all good. There is a bench outside to sit on, but other than that there is no place to sit and dine in. This shop is more so a “eat on the go” type of shop.

Comment: Tiny but great find! The matcha is really smooth and the blue moon matcha was ultra-creamy. Can’t wait to come back when we have more time to explore the menu. You can definitely tell it’s a local spot that does well. Stay on top of your order though because it can get crowded quickly and you don’t want it accidentally forgotten.

Comment: Their onigirazu are always fresh and warm, and they have so many fun matcha latte flavors! If you like high-quality matcha, try their signature Tokuya matcha - it has an intense vegetal flavor. If you like flavored lattes, try their yuzu honey ginger matcha latte. For onigirazu, as a vegetarian my favorite is the veggie tofu nugget - its very rich with a nice balance of flavors.

Comment: Yum. Fried chicken karaage with chili oil onigirazu is winner for a midday snack. Place is small and cute and has quite a large menu. I might order ahead if I go back because it was tight and took a few min to prep. One thing to note is that while the onigirazu appear quite large in photos they are very wide and thin, making it nearly impossible to eat as one would a sandwich and not exactly the most filling. Would definitely recommend if you’re nearby, but maybe get an additional item if you need a full meal.

Comment: All their onigirazu are made to order — the rice is still hot to touch! They cut the rice sandwich into half. The price (~$10 after tax) is reasonable as the onigirazu is packed with rice and ingredients. If you have a small appetite like me, you can save another half for your next meal which makes it extra worth it.We arrived at 4 so unfortunately most of their popular items have already sold out, including the Ramen-ish and Chicken Karaage Chili Oil onigirazu. Anyway it must be a sign to urge me come again early for these and of course, their matcha.* Salmon Avocado OnigirazuA comforting combo that I can eat every day. The salmon flakes were well seasoned with nice touches of mayo and wasabi. The avocado slices were fresh and creamy, which made a perfect balance to the savory side.* Teriyaki Chicken OnigirazuTbh the teriyaki chicken tasted like frozen chicken skewers I bought at Japanese supermarket lol but it’s alright I like them. The overall flavor was a bit bland and one-note, but it was a good option to take some proteins.

Will definitely come back. Theres a nice little park across the street you can sit and eat at. Comment: The onigiri was good but it took over an hour and a half after placing our order to get our food. unfortunately the line was just really long, with the influx of both online orders and people waiting in line, and I’m not sure it was worth the wait for just the onigiri.

Comment: The hojicha latte is so refreshing! Not sweet but flavorful 🥰 A very cute little shop. They are many creative onigiri fillings. I ordered the curry cheese teriyaki onigiri and it was really tasty and made fresh on the spot. I would come early because several onigiri fillings sell out throughout the day. I popped in at 2pm on a Tuesday and there were still quite a few people filing in after me.

Comment: I am a little biased, because I’m used to the tasty and cheap onigiri from 7-11 in Asia, but I’ll acknowledge that this is New York and these are freshly made to order, even warm to the touch so the price is worth it. Oh and they are easily twice the size with more fancy ingredients than a convenience store rice ball. A bit messy to eat, but filling for a quick meal. The salmon and avocado was a bit spicy (good) and the spam and egg was a hit with my son. The matcha latte was very good and refreshing. It is unsweetened but sugar is available. I’m glad there’s places like this and will stop in again to try a different onigiri if I’m in the area!

One onigirazu is about the same portion of two onigiri’s you’d find elsewhere. I wonder if they have a create your own version, that would be nice too. Comment: As someone that grew up in Japan, I really love and appreciate this little gem and their food!! Onigirazu with salmon flake and shiso hits the spot, and their matcha and hojicha lattes are great too. And people that work there are always nice.

Comment: What a lovely neighborhood spot! I love their onigirazu, warm rice-ball sandwiches. My current favorite is probably kara-age (fried chicken) with chili oil—a little crispy, a little spicy, and a lot delicious. Great coffee and matcha drinks, fresh pastries, what more could you want?

Comment: First time I ever had an Onigirazu ( like a rice-ball sandwich) and they were so good! I tried the Salmon egg one and spicy chicken one. Spicy one was my favorite. Also their Matcha Latte is pretty solid and authentic Matcha taste which I loved.

Comment: This place is such a hidden gem! Everything is made to order and fresh, and I loveeeee the onigirazu (rice ball sandwich). Not only is the taste authentic, but everyone here speaks japanese (that i know of) and is superrrr nice! I havent had a single onigirazu that I did not love. The prices are extremely reasonable too. If you have not been here, hurry hurry!

Comment: One of my favorite weekly traditions is to stop by the Tokuyama Salon Cafe for a gyudon bowl — usually after a long evening run. You might see Tomo and Taka running the store (and guest appearances of Coco the French bulldog). They really do make it easy to feel like a part of the neighborhood around here, which means a lot because I only moved to the East Village a few months ago during a pandemic! The gyudon bowl itself is super tasty (I go for the added chili oil and eggs as a treat). Good portions, too. I feel satisfied with the whole bowl even after running 6 miles. If you’re in the mood for something more portable, they also have a colorful assortment of onigirazu (rice ball sandwiches). Here’s a fun date idea: consider picking up some food from the Tokuyama Salon Cafe, then walk one block over to Tompkins Square Park to have a picnic, or enjoy some of the local musicians playing outside.

Comment: This place is a must try! Tokuyama Salon Cafe is known for their onigirazu, which is a fancier version of the more common onigiri. So far, the flavors I’ve tried are: Salmon Salad, Salmon and Shiso, Japanese Fried Chicken, Spam Aloha, and Imitation Crab Salad with Avocado; they were all very fresh and delicious! I have also had the Guydon Rice Bowl with Scallion and Egg and that was full of flavors, I absolutely loved it. Tokuyama Cafe Salon is also extremely reasonably priced, so please try it out if you haven’t! They also do delivery, which I have been super happy about because that means I get to enjoy their food more often!

Comment: Ive lived on Avenue C for 2 years now and this is by far my favorite café in the neighborhood. The interior is incredibly quaint with its old fashioned wall papers and wood paneling; the place epitomizes the word cozy. It goes without saying that the food and drinks are delicious as well. I highly recommend their matcha drinks and the Onigirazu rice balls. Its exceedingly apparent that everything done at Tokuyama is done with a great amount of thought and care.

Comment: (Changing from 5 stars to 4): *often* the best onigiri in the city. Staff changes a lot, so will depend on who is prepping your food. Typically well trained, but have been there were all staff were new (just two days) and resultes weren’t optimal.Try the pressed sandwiches too.

Comment: A small Japanese-style cafe. There was originally Tokuyama Salon next door, and I used it while waiting. Its small and there are only a few seats. There is free wi-fi, so you can often see people working on their laptops. There is no socket, so it may not be suitable for long hours of work?Matcha latte and muffins go perfectly together. The muffins are also a good size, rather than the large ones you find in New York cafes, so you can easily eat them as a snack. The Americano may have been a little too roasted. But the matcha muffin was delicious ◎I can see the local ladies chatting and reading newspapers by the window, and I get the feeling that this cafe is loved. If you go around 14:00, it will be relatively empty, so if you want to take a relaxing break in East Village, definitely go there.

Comment: Cozy cafe parked on a sleepy street in Alphabet City.looking for casual cafe a few blocks away from Tompkins? then Tokuyama Salon Cafe should be your destination. the cafe is quite small: only 2-3 tiny tables. the case is dimly lit and most of the space if dominated by the coffee bar where you order and a huge table of Japanese-centric eats as well as Western-styled bites like pastries, croissants, muffins, scones, etc. this is a very much a grab-and-go place for me.the coffee? the drip (pre-brew) is solid. i wouldnt say good, nor bad just solid--hot coffee with the appropriate amount of caffeine. its probably the blend/grind of coffee that, to me, feels more acidic than actually flavorful.the espresso? very good to great. good strong coffee beans. strong aroma. prepared expertly.theres punch card rewards card system. buy a certain amount get one free.theres a variety of matcha drinks as well.the Japanese-styled small plate items seem most appetizing to me and im likely to grab one of these in the future like the onigrazu (japanese rice sandwich stuffed with different ingredients like karaage or beef + ginger...and the matcha-baked items look interesting as an eat-on-the-go bite. yumthe staff? polite and kind.drops mic cuz iknow what im talk-uyama-ing about
