Comment: One of my favourite dining affairs of all time. Of course you must like chicken, but the experience goes beyond that. I wouldn’t say it’s some out of body mind blowing over the top meal, but just simple ingredients done so well. The staff are just wonderful too. Can’t wait to visit again, with many more people.

Comment: Not for vegetarians, but this was world class protein prepared by a world class chef. The somm was incredible. 10/10 would recommend. My only criticism is that every course tasted the same because it was cooked with the same marinade and the same coals. They might consider varying the flavor profile and marginally increasing the salt.

Comment: Amazzziing Food. Impeccable service. Great Dining Experience!Every yakitori was done with perfection! I especially loved the hearts and cartilage!!!! Great selections of Japanese beer and Junmai Daijingo sake. Service was insane...they even had the flashlight ready for the floor as I go up the 2 steps from the restroom to the dining room. Super attentive to details and anticipate guests needs. Arigato Gozaimasu!!

Comment: [One star ⭐️ Michelin] This sibling to Torishiki in Tokyo arrives to NYC with superb yakitori. Executive Chef Hideo A shows off his skills turning, fanning, saucing and brushing every stick he serves. The only restaurant outside of Japan that is allowed to use the most special Kishu Binchotan that is unique in its flavor and aroma. Wonderful display of skills, passion and food! 👍🏻

Comment: This yakitori restaurant is a cozy, intimate bar with private backrooms that add an exclusive touch. Its authenticity is truly remarkable, evident in every impeccably cooked piece of chicken and vegetables. What sets this place apart is not just the delicious skewers, but the staffs warm and welcoming service. They even offer the unique and delicious chicken esophagus dish, making the dining experience memorable and one-of-a-kind. Will continue to return as often as possible.

Comment: Food 8/10Great skewers, but nothing absolutely blew my mind away, and that’s okay! The food was stellarly cooked, tender, and flavorful, over a grill. The smokiness in each piece was terrific, charred just the right amount. A great variety of chicken parts to try, my favorites were the heart, thigh, and skin. Overall, it was a fun experience, although I don’t know if I would return.Atmosphere 8/10Beautifully decorated interior, dark and wooden atmosphere.Service 10/10Friendly service, great recommendations for drinks.

Comment: Like many Japanese restaurants in NYC, its on a side street and low-key without much signage. The dining area has an industrial feel, with a C-shape counter around the 5 or 6 chefs milling about. There is also a private dining room to the side. Only 2 chefs are doing the grilling -- the others are prepping other things. They create an energetic feel as they call out dishes and drinks being prepared, and even if they see a diner go for a washroom break. The server was friendly and got rapport with us, asking about our visit to the city. The chef offered to take our photo and then also added one of himself which was hilarious. I think the head chef has a heart of gold, because he was cheerful all night despite literally sweating buckets grinding away in front of the hot grill, and fixing his assistants mishaps without half a frown. As far as the food is concerned, one may wonder how barbecue skewers could get a Michelin star. Having had yakitori a million times, I can say the ingredients here are good, but its mostly the chefs skill that produces a tasty and juicy result time after time, while not being undercooked. Some of the pieces are sliced thinly so its not cumbersome to bite off. The potato and broccoli have amazing flavor infused into it. They provide spices for us to use, but often its already delicious the moment it is put onto our plate. Dessert was ok, but not on par with the high quality of everything else. At the end of the day, a prospective diner has to decide whether its worth it to pay double or triple the cost of a typical yakitori meal, even if it is elevated to the highest level. As a skewer lover, I would say yes, occasionally!

Comment: The food here was excellent when they werent serving yakitori. The wagyu was quite good, the agedashi tofu was the best Ive ever had, and the oyakodon was very good. However, the rest of the meal was just seriously overpriced chicken skewers that were frankly extremely oversalted. Ive had better yakitori at much more reasonable prices in Japan, Vietnam, and California. Additionally, there were real problems with the service the night we came, that to me indicated bad management. This included one of the staff publicly reprimanding another staff member, apparently for having volunteered that the tofu was not made in house. Regardless, I was disappointed by this restaurant - Im surprised it has a Michelin star. There are at least two other one star options in the neighborhood, so if thats what youre looking for, you might check them out instead.

They specialize in not wasting any parts of the chicken so we had to be adventurous and ate cartilage and gizzard. They were good but definitely the other courses were incredible. Comment: Loved the experience, food and people at Torien. Visited Apr 9th to celebrate my 40th. Right from the entrance into the restaurant the experience was excellent. The maitre d’ surprised the guests in front of us with his use of mandirin as well as his understanding of Japanese. We were seated at the end of the counter with a full view of the kitchen and other guests. The stemware I believe was Schott Zweisel and its thinness was a perfect pairing to the atmosphere and Japanese aesthetic. We enjoyed the kawaba Pilsner and a deliciously mineral Chablis which both cut through the fattiness of every dish. Some standout dishes from the tasting were the tail, with its crispy and juicy pieces and a rich chicken flavor. The knee was incredible, served with a fermented yuzu, added a perfect acidic note. Who knew chickens had knees. The broccoli was something my younger self wished I’d grown up with. Overall I would eat any of the dishes again if I could, full of layered flavors and memorable textures. Wonderful people, wonderful waitress and excellent chefs and cooks! Thank you Torien for making our experience and our night a memorable one. Oh and I love my binchotan!

Comment: I normally dont post restaurant reviews but I felt like my experience tonight warranted one. I came in with high expectations and Torien still blew me away.I went in a group of 3 celebrating someones birthday. The immediate impression I got from the service was The Menu-esque (I only recently watched the movie). However, rather than coming off as intimidating, the coordinated yells of the staff provided a sense of occasion - like youre walking into something special and bespoke. The food doesnt need any elaborating: this is the best Yakitori Ive ever - and likely will ever - taste. The portions were just right (I eat a bit more than the average person fyi), the chicken was succulent, and the flavor in each and every stick was juuuuust right. Maybe its the sake that soothed the entire meal, but if I were to note down any imperfections Id be nitpicking. Every detail in my experience felt intentional. For example, the menus are printed using a traditional Japanese printing method from the pre-Meiji era, and the water is filtered with the charcoal that they use to cook their meats (dont know if it actually does anything but the water sure tastes better). Most importantly, it was the service that made the dinner truly special. Sirus and Mayumi, our waiter and waitress, made us feel like we were eating and drinking with friends. Chef Rodrigo spared no expense explaining to us all the small details throughout the night, from the story behind the charcoal used by the restaurant to his own personal life story. Everything the staff did made us feel homely and whatever shred of awkwardness was washed away by their sincerity and personability; it all felt very human.Ive been to high end restaurants in every time zone and corner of the world, but Torien is something truly unique. I dont think any of my future trips to New York would be complete without a visit here. Ill definitely be back.

Comment: Contrary to the prestigious concept, the greetings upon entering the restaurant were reminiscent of an izakaya and felt a bit unbalanced. The service is Japanese style and I am very satisfied. In terms of taste, considering the level of authentic yakitori and NY, I think its a bit more.

Comment: This experience will immediately transport you to Tokyo. The intimate space is simply designed, focused around the kitchen where chefs are intently focused on the yakitori craft. 10+ courses of chicken seems like it would be repetitive, but each piece evokes a very different flavor and emotion. We also did the beverage pairing, which offered about six different wines, sakes and champagne to accompany the dishes. Service here exudes the culture of humility and care the Japanese are known for, and is very efficient and kind. If you are looking for a little taste of Japan in NYC that’s not sushi, this is a wonderful choice.

Comment: Food was amazing and best Yakitori in NYC. What sets this apart was the unique meats and really hot grill that makes it too hot to immediatley sink your teeth in. I also like it because it was all Yakitori and no filler dishes. I did take off one star because I felt service and space was too stuffy and in your face. Comment: My boyfriend and I had the most wonderful time here. The food was absolutely delicious, service top notch, and the atmosphere was lovely. I loved their attention and dedication to traditional Japanese customs such as the entire restaurant welcoming you when you enter and sending you off when you leave. The food is probably the best part of the entire experience. Each skewer is delicately prepared. Note that this restaurant is chicken focused so if you don’t like chicken don’t come here. My favorites were their scallion chicken skewer and their bowl of ramen at the end. Their almond yogurt and lemon curd dessert was ABSOLUTELY amazing. I don’t even like dessert but ate it all.In terms of quantity, I was so full and had to give my last few skewers to my boyfriend. He would have been full even without my extra skewers. My boyfriend and I don’t always love chicken but we loved our time here which speaks volumes to the quality of their meat and the way they prepare it.To note for sake drinkers, the sake selection was great though overpriced. For example, our favorite Omakase place charges $100 for the 3 year snow aged Hakkaisan. It was priced at $200 here.

Comment: Absolutely fantastic place. I have been to many yakitori restaurants around Japan and this spot is comparable to some of the best Ive had there. Total duration was about 2 1/2 hours with 15 courses incl. a break between skewers, a more filling dish towards the end, and a dessert. The entire meal was excellent from start to finish, I can not name one piece I was even lukewarm about. Each piece of chicken was incredibly juicy, flavorful, meaty, and cooked to perfection. There were many standard skewers like the thigh, chicken breasts (prepared two different ways), wings, etc... But there were also some interesting ones like the shoulder with whole grain mustard and knee (did you even know chickens have knees? I didnt!). Each vegetable skewer was also cooked to perfection, each one made differently as to draw out the most flavor from their individual characteristics. The broccoli was definitely my favorite with its smoky and char tastes. The shiitake was meaty, flavorful, and a meal in itself.Right before dessert, a filling meal of either paintan (chicken) ramen or oyakodon was served. Fortunately I came with my partner so we could sample both. The ramen broth was rich and savory with the distinct flavor that comes from using the chicken bones as the base. It came with what I call chicken cha-siu that was just as good as the skewers themselves. The oyakodon was silky smooth, hearty, and accompanied by the chicken soup it was served with, it definitely will fill you up if youre still hungry.Service was impeccable; something I would find in the highest of fine-dining restaurants. The servers were very attentive and proactive in all their actions. The chefs were a hoot to eat with; while the master chef would cook the meal and present it to us with zeal and flourish, his sous chef kept us entertained the whole time with funny stories, fun facts about chicken, or just general commentary that made the whole experience that much more pleasant.Overall I highly recommend this place to anyone who is even remotely serious about enjoying some of the best yakitori the world has to offer. I would bring my parents here next time or even come alone to experience the magic that is a man, some Japanese charcoal, and skewers of chicken and vegetables.

Comment: Torien offers a modern high end take on Yakitori. The food is excellent and service is very attentive but overall the experience felt mismatched. When you arrive at Torien, ring the door bell and enter into the dimmly lit foyer you might think you are in for a serious dining experience but once you enter the dining area you hear 90s pop music and chefs loudly interacting with guests it quickly becomes a different experience. The food is beautifully prepared and each course was delicious. The wine and sake selection is small but pairs very well with each tasting.Service is extremely attentive but almost too much so. Since its bar seating theres someone constantly reaching for glasses on all sides it becomes a little intrusive.Ultimately it was an enjoyable dinner but for the cost I expected a little more refined experience especially since you are really just getting chicken and vegetables.Still absolutely worth a visit and I think it would probably be a lot of fun with a large group and different expectations.

Comment: First thing: this yakitori place is not a $$ but a $$$$. The omakase price is $180 but with drinks, tax, tip, it could add up to at least around $250 per person. The atmosphere and service was just wonderful. Every staff was so friendly, welcoming and considerate. The food was great and the portion is quite large compared to, e.g. sushi omakase. And you can add their special order of the day if you want more!Quail eggs, neck skin, chicken wings, bamboo shoots, cartilage, hearts…greatThe only suggestion I have…and this is probably just out of personal preference, is that some skewers could be slightly less salty. Also, though the food was always tender and juicy, it’s sometimes fairly raw and you can still see the blood (especially the hearts and livers). And to be nitpicking, I guess the drinks were a bit overpriced. For example, a small glass of soda cost $15. I understand that in such a fine dining place it’s probably normal to price this way, but there’s really nothing special about it.

Comment: Simply exquisite. One of my good friend went there before and he said he liked it so much. Knowing how picky he is, it got me curious even with Torien’s high price range. So I tried and no regret, might as well come here more.As a non-professional’s guess, I think what they do extremely well is 1. fire it well at perfect balance for the yakoyori and 2. season it perfect, not too much, not too little. When said or written, it sounds super simple and nothing special, but I think those are what makes their menu so great and bring it to uncharted territory (at least for me). Each menu itself and overall course was so well arranged for their taste.I was already quite sure that I would give 4 stars to here due to my picky friend’s review. But I feel I’m obliged to give them 5 given how much I enjoyed.

Comment: Another small place with excellent food and service. First I had the Duck salad, nicely balanced flavors. The food is cooked in a 1000 degree charcoal grill. The Thigh was nicely flavored and you can add a little be of the two spices provided. the cartilage, I tried it with and without the spices and it was crunchy but delicious. Broccoli nicely grill with a little of salt and lemon . Hearts didnt have that much of the iron taste which usually has, was really good. Sugar Snap Peas, zucchini were good. Neck skin was really crispy, (you only get one side, unable to reorder this one). The wings and the quailed eggs were really tasty. so many dishes, we ordered four more side, gizzard, tail, liver and shoulder were amazing. The meatball and the Ramen were oishi. I want to go back.

Comment: Do not want to say more - food was absolutely orgasmic… After you tried the entire menu, try to use all your a la carte quota on the off menu items. You can find chicken parts that other ordinary yakitori places do not have. All I can say is: be adventurous!! Thanks chef and thank you to all the staff there for the wonderful food and service. Dining alone feels so comfortable here.

Comment: Incredible. Cannot recommend this omakase enough. We arrived a little early for a 05:30pm reservation and killed time at Tom & Jerry’s (cash only) bar until the doors opened. Everyone from front of house to the chefs preparing the meal were absolutely wonderful people. My fiancé and I have done plenty of omakase meals before in Portland and stupidly set our expectations slightly lower than the places we had eaten at before (Nodoguro, Le Pigeon), but we’re absolutely blown away by all the dishes prepared for us. We would 100% return for the exact same meal paying the exact same prices; it was that good. Thank you all for your incredible work at your craft, we cannot recommend this place enough!

Comment: What an unique and lovely experience! We went there for my birthday celebration and absolutely had a great time! It was a bit pricey but definitely worth trying. The service was good and the flavor from charcoal was amazing. I wish they have a bit more variety on the menu but totally understand it’s supposed to be “Tori” (chicken) themed. Overall, a good place if you want to have a low key, relaxing and fun time!

Comment: Five star food, but not $$.I made a reservation after checking the reviews on google, and having a $$ rating. Food was fantastic, and service was amazing, my only issue is that it a two-dollar sign on Google when it is more four-dollar sign.

Comment: Japanese yakitori restaurant.A structured menu that includes 13 dishes. Most of them are yakitori. The dishes were very special and wonderfully made. The restaurant has 15 seats around a bar and you can see the work of the chefs, which is impressive in terms of precision, aesthetics and tranquility. In addition, there are several staff members who constantly take care of the guests and provide excellent service.High prices but an amazing experience

Comment: A sister restaurant opened in New York by ``Torishiki, known as the most difficult-to-book yakitori restaurant in Japan. When you take a bite of the perfectly grilled chicken over binchotan charcoal, the fragrant aroma and juicy flavor spread in your mouth.I never thought you could eat such delicious cartilage in America. It was an omakase course, but it also included chicken skin and heart, making it an irresistible lineup for Japanese yakitori lovers. The chicken paitan ramen soup at the end is more delicious than the other ramen shops! The pleasant service made it one of the stores I would like to visit again.

Comment: Came here to celebrate my birthday & was excited to try their yakitori. The food was delicious & service was great however I was deeply disappointed with the experience because we missed out on one of the dishes. In my opinion, the food is amazing however it can be overwhelming without some sort of break. The restaurant includes this on their menu however I was not given the skewer break sorbet. The staff forgot to give us the sorbet & it was only given to us because I had noticed that the other groups had received it. They gave us the skewer break sorbet at the end, alongside the dessert. Unfortunately, this ruined the omakase experience & expected better from a fine dining restaurant. Many reviews cite Torien’s attention to detail however my experience did not reflect that. Thus I can only give 4 stars.

Comment: I only wish there were more stars to give - 5/5 simply doesnt convey how incredible the food, ambience and team at Torien truly are. Every detail is so precise, intentional, impeccably planned and executed in each course of omikase. The decor and ambience are minimalist but rich as is the yakitori.Torien is a unique, rare gem. No number of stars will do, but a few from Michelin would be a good start.

Comment: Torien is a singular establishment in NYC, merging the transportive, elemental experience of yakitori with all of the luxury of fine dining at a Michelin starred restaurant. The attention to detail in this restaurant demonstrates why it has received so much praise. The perfectly grilled skewers are the star of the show, but the wine list, the service, and the design of the restaurant are all world class.Memorable dishes included the soft boiled and grilled quail eggs, as well as the crispy chicken neck skin and the chicken esophagus. The sommelier recommended a pairing of a Corsican red wine with a skewer of the chicken’s main artery, which is was one of the most delicious things I have eaten in a long time.Eating at Torien is not just a dinner, it is an experience. The immersive omakase menu and some additional skewers (ask about the esophagus and the main artery, which are not on the fixed menu) stretched our dining time to almost three hours, and every minute felt special. If you are a fan of yakitori and fine dining, Torien is a must.

Comment: We had the privilege of booking an Omakase Yakitori 13 course dinner with Michelin star Chef Yoshiteru Ikegawa was in from Japan for a few weeks. Quite a memorable tour de force of his crafty Birdy Yakitori. The chicken skin, thigh, chicken heart which was the most tender ever and quail eggs grilled perfectly on the Bichotan coals. An unctuous evening of Yakitori. We will be back.

Comment: This is a unique experience, truly Unique !! first because the place is different (simple, but elegant) then the food, everything is chicken, different parts of the chicken that I never thought could be eaten; wow !! fantastic flavors from the first dish to the colorful end! Comment: Quail eggs were the highlight - soft boiled first then blessed by the mighty grill, yet still creamy and juicy - very impressive.Neck skin was great too.Poached chicken appetizer was a bit disappointing though; the meat was both dry and stiff, without much flavor... Was rather surprised they would think it’s a good idea to use that as the “welcoming appetizer”.Overall it was an amazing journey.

Comment: I came across this one star Michelin restaurant during the restaurant week. The bento is more than worthy, both elegant and big portion, a unusual and satisfying combination. Meat, veggies, and rice are beautifully layed out in a wooden box. A cup of chicken broth is included. This is definitely the best bento I have had in New York City. I highly recommend and will like to go back often.

Comment: Delicious! Who knew yakitori could be so delicious.. the chef here is famous for the having the best yakitori in Tokyo, Japan. More than just chicken skewers, each bite was flavorful, perfectly cooked and accompanied with extra seasoning at your disposal: daikon pepper (numbing!) and shiso. The cuts alternate depending on when you go, so the ingredients are always fresh. What sets this place above the rest is the service: impeccable but personable, and attentive without being overbearing. I was congested during the meal and the staff took care to offer me tissues on more than one occasion, as well as pass me some for the trip home. The two chefs and the manager walked us outside when we left and bowed until we reached the end of the block and turned the street.A little pricey, but worth it for a special occasion (or just because!). $150 for yakitori omakase and a mandatory 20% service charge.

Comment: Torien offers a delightful yakitori style tasting menu from a renowned Tokyo establishment. The 14 dish meal includes eating the entirety of a chicken from thighs and wings to gizzards, skin and heart and an assortment of grilled vegetables (brussel sprouts, mushrooms) and one of the most delicious bites of tofu I’ve ever consumed. Also we had a bottle of sake that was arguably one of the smoothest and crisp I’ve ever had the pleasure of pairing with a meal. The ambiance is inviting and sophisticated, the hospitality exceptional and the detail orientated chefs prepare each skewer in front of you which makes the whole experience feel extremely intimate. The main knock is that the pacing of the meal can sometime labour a bit, leaving you ravenous for the next bite while the check will have you questioning whether or not it’s financially responsible to return for a second visit.
