Comment: The Omakase was very good, but nothing mind-blowing or surprising. Ive seen some other Omakase in town that are better, but none that I feel like I could share with another person and still be approximately full.

Comment: Since I laid out my eyes in this place Ive wanted to try it. One night, my husband and I finally tried it and we LOVED IT!!! Its definitely our favorite fine-dining japanese restaurant here in NYC! We tried the Shabu shabu (Japanese hot pot) for the first time and it was delicious, along with some amazing sashimi with exotic and rare fish options. A must try if youre in the area! The service is outstanding too, and I am glad to have a japanese restaurant experience so authentic, I almost shouted out Oishii-desu at the end of the dinner! Also the mochi desserts are exquisite!!! Highly recommended!

Comment: This was a welcome surprise. I was looking for a Japanese place midtown that was open on Saturday at 11:30, and this looked like the best of the bunch.I ordered Sashimi 5 kinds, and it was 15 pieces of high-quality fish (fatty tuna, sea bream) appealingly arranged, not copious but sufficient. (No rice, which can be ordered a la carte.) The waitress was kind enough to volunteer the names of all the fish I was eating. The house sake was superb, so much so that I ordered a second one to savor. The miso soup was delectable as well.Hence, the 5-star rating for the food. The place was pleasant enough, light and airy. The clientele heavily Japanese, which to me was a good sign. The cost was on the high side - for all the items mentioned, $90 with tax and tip.

Comment: The fish is high quality at this place! I also never really liked uni much before but wokuni changed my mind about them due to how fresh it is. The serving is also just right! If you want to order some of their rotating specials, be sure to come earlier in the day as they have limited quantity. But if they run out of those, Im sure the other menu items will still be as good :)We got the wokuni don, osashimi teishoku, and tempura inaniwa udon. For the udon, if youre someone who prefers them on the thicker and al dente side, I would avoid ordering this. But if you like soft and thinner udon, it is very good 👍

Comment: The value is actually pretty good. We ordered about 5 pieces of thick cut chu toro for only about $5 a piece. That’s a steal! Definitely order either the chu toro or otoro—melts in your mouth. The grilled sea bass is also delicious.Don’t sleep on the apps either. We enjoyed the karaage a lot too!My favorite thing about this place though is probably the music!!! All of the songs were beautiful honestly. I don’t think I’ve ever paid so much attention to a restaurants music before.

Comment: The food was pretty good, a little underwhelming in texture. My friend and I preferred slices of fish over diced for the fancier feel and texture versus this being a mixed bowl thats more like poke. The uni was very little in the set, no ikura which I was expecting in the bowl. The set was good otherwise - soup, salad, edamame, cabbage and bowl was very filling for the price point. The hotate butter (scallops) was disappointing because we expected shell scallops but the scallop felt like the freezer kind we could buy at home. The taste was as expected, buttery.

Comment: Our family of five stumbled upon WOKUNI after learning that the Japanese fusion restaurant we had made reservations about a month ago via yelp, wasn’t actually open today.I was pretty grumpy about the situation, especially with 3 hungry kids under 7, but it was quickly turned around when I saw the amazing menu at WOKUNI. To top that off, their kids meal is a freaking deal!!!! The meal had a perfect-sized salmon chirashi don, an “octopus” sausage, some chicken cutlet, tempura shrimp, edamame beans, salad, and cocktail fruit. The kids loved the surprise underneath the sushi boat best… kinder surprise, Rice Krispies square, fruit gummies and m&ms.Let me tell you… as parents who just spent all day traveling, a spectacular meal that can satisfy the kids–really makes a big difference! We also ordered the seafood noodles, sashimi (3 kinds, 9 pieces), a few rolls and some apps. Everything was amazing and fresh. What a gem!

Staff recommended the Wokuni Don for lunch, which has a limited amount served per day. Its basically a supersized Chirashi Don with sashimi and tempura over rice. Its so good. Dinner was fabulous as well. I ordered the Eel Don, and there were 4 different ways of eating, which was fun, and every bite was pleasant.

Comment: 4.5 stars.Tastefully decorated with a modern feel but not too much. Exposed dark concrete walls with wood accents and high ceilings that appear to work well preventing noise from carrying. Excellent and responsive service. Feels like there is a group rotation of table support with drink refills, picking up plates l,or delivering good. Not intruding in the slightest and helpful with keeping the food and table clean. Very clean and quiet.Made a reservation without issue via OpenTable for Friday at 5:00. As others have mentioned, it is somewhat a point designation as there isn’t a lot round that keep you in the immediate area post dinner.Negi Toro, karaage, Yamaimo French Fries and the Chef’s sashimi choice were the stars of the show. The Sake Hitsumabushi was not a favorite of our table and in terms of flavor, it wasn’t to our taste. Just seemed like it was missing something between aesthetics and flavor. We enjoyed our visit and recommend this with enthusiasm.

Comment: This has become one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. For the last three months, I visited 5 times (3 times for dinner and 2 times for lunch). And, I’m Japanese. The quality of their fish is superb. This restaurant is no comparison to other restaurants like Ootoya in terms of the food quality and price. Their lunch special is a steal and now It has become very popular. Super fresh quality fish and good price! The only reason why I don’t give five stars is because of their poor service. Especially during the lunch time, I would say the service is worse. Today, I asked my waitress to bring me a cup of hot tea twice. Both times, the waitress said “sure” but never came back. I waited for 5 minutes each time but when I saw no one seemed to remember it, my husband called one of the chefs and asked for a cup of tea. The chef told the waitress and she finally brought it as if she didn’t remember me asked for tea (no apology - no acknowledgement). Also, last time when I visited here with my friends, one of the friends’ order was taking much longer than ours. She told us to start eating and patiently waited for her food. When we were about to finish our dishes, a waitress approached and told the friend that the chef got confused and made something else other than what she ordered. The waitress asked “Do you want the food he just made instead of what you ordered?” .... We were shocked because she didn’t apologize for the mistake nor realizing the mistake after 20minutes! She just asked if my friend wanted the one the chef just made! My friend was speechless and just said “I do not want to wait anymore because my friends will need to wait for me.” I thought the waitress would notice that my friend is being passive aggressive. However, the waitress said “sure, I’ll bring what the chef made.” ..... Seriously? No apology? No nothing!? Again, we had to ask for cups of tea multiple times at that time too. Well, I still give four stars and will go back there. So you can see how fresh their fish is. Yes the quality and price is great but don’t expect good service!

Comment: Enjoyed our lunch a Wokuni very much - fresh seafood prepared brilliantly, generous portions and great value for money, friendly staff and nice ambience. Highly recommended. Do make reservations; I am glad I did - the restaurant was full when we arrived at 12 noon!

Comment: The food was great, but honestly not worth the price. You get the same quality as an all you can eat sushi restaurant, for quadruple the price. This place has some of the best cooked duck in nyc. But their mackerel was horrible. The service was amazing. The California roll was made with real crab, so it tasted better than most places as well.

Comment: Wokuni, you impressed me. Located off of Lexington in midtown, the location is not ideal. However, I was not expecting the level of service and the quality of fish that we were served in this modern Japanese restaurant.Very nice space with a long bar against the wall when you walk in. Plenty of tables and booths with a sushi bar in the back of the restaurant. Clean lines with modern decor, cool space to enjoy dinner. The studio was fantastic. The Scallop sashimi was like butter. The tuna trio sashimi was perfect with regular tuna, medium fat tuna and Toro. The sushi platter allowed us to try a large selection of various excellent options. Ended with the Negi Toro roll, so good.To top it all off, our server, Ronnie, was tremendous. Knowledgeable and very attentive, he made sure the service matched the quality of the meal. Nice work!Location - 7Service - 10Quality - 10Ambiance - 9

Comment: I cannot gush enough about WOKUNI. Many restaurants espouse a commitment to high quality ingredients and low prices, but the folks at Tokyo Ichiban Foods execute this vision better than their competitors on almost every level. The tuna and salmon sashimi are the stars of any lunch tray at WOKUNI. Only prepared five times a day, their Osashimi Teishoku is comprised of five types of sashimi atop a handsome bowl of rice.Alongside Tuna, Salmon, and King Yellowtail traditional sashimi, a generous serving of uni and spicy fish tartare accent this dish and provide the textural contrast and sweetness that sets this lunchtime fare apart from countless other Manhattan sushi specials. In the event they are sold out of this elusive dish, I elect to order the salmon don with an uni addition. However, you cannot go wrong here. Do what your heart desires. If my wallet allowed it and the trains ran to Bayside, I would be first in line for WOKUNIs lunch hours every day.

Comment: A good option for not-so-expensive but high quality chirashi, especially their lunch sets. I had their Wokuni-Don lunch set, which is the cheaper price option of the two available, but no reduce of quality! For the food itself, I usually taste chirashi-dons without soy sauce or wasabi to feel the flavor and freshness of fishes, and this meal did not disappointed me (which is actually hard even in NYC). It is really fresh so you can feel the natural flavors without feeling disguising, and the mixed flavor of different fishes is also really harmony, not like some of the weird mixes I had before. The ambience is good for friend gathering, dating (may be a little bit noise), or business event. I actually saw people proposing their business projects during the lunch time, which is pretty interesting to me.As a conclusion, this is my go to place if I want to have good quality chirashi without spending a lot (total = $40~$45 for the lunch set I had). Really recommand it!

Comment: This is a great Japanese restaurant in midtown. Stopped by here for lunch and had two of the lunch special platters, each for around $25-29 and each comes with edamame, a tiny salad, and miso soup. I had the grilled salmon and we also got the Bara Chirashi fish medley that sits on top of rice (and opted for the additional fish eggs). The food was very good and I also had a happy hour Asahi beer for only $5. A few of the lunch items were sold out - not sure if it’s a supply issue, but the dishes we settled on were delicious either way.

Comment: Kaisen Hitsumabushi or assorted seafood sashimi is very similar to chirashi. The difference is this comes with a tea soup that you can mix it with the sashimi and rice, I absolutely love it, really brings out a different flavor. For the skewers highly recommend the chicken, super juicy and tender and cooked perfectly. The beef on the other hand, skip it. Maybe try the wagyu? The regular beef skewer was overcooked and dry.

Comment: Clean modern decor, and fresh ingredients, neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Located in Murray hill, few blocks south of Grand Central. Its one of favorite place for chirashi lunch, they have limited special chirashi (8 a day, or 5, depending on the dish), and other regular chirashi.Tried the Wokuni chirashi (8 a day) and Kaisen-don, both were good. Comes with miso soup, salad, edamame. Portions were good, price also good for the quality. They also have drink specials, sake and beer.

Comment: Made a 10 top reservation with barely 6 hours heads up and the staff made it happen for my buddys birthday.I ordered the sushi platter. It was plated nicely and the wasabi seemed like it had been freshly grated. Tasted like great quality tuna. Cant say Im an expert in how uni should taste but that also tasted good. Half the table wanted to try an unfiltered sake and the other wanted to try a filtered dry one, and our waiter quickly recommended a couple options and let us sample a bit too.All in all, great service, food, sake. At this price point this is a must visit (or at least get takeout)For the team: Its a total nitpick given the size of the table, but I think all of us were fine to wait an extra couple minutes for everything to arrive at once.

Comment: We really enjoyed this Japanese restaurant. They offer a nice selection of sushi at a regular market price, but they also offer a variety of other great dishes. Everything was authentic and some of the dishes were a unique twist to what youd expect. The duck was cooked perfectly and prepared quite simply - they really let the quality of the meat and dish shine on its own. I could see how someone would be disappointed to spend $20+ on a entree and not be offered any sides (literally two-pieces of asparagus).. but I still gave this review 5 stars because the service, atmosphere and food were great.

Comment: Great food! We got their tempura udon and the steak hitsumabushi. Their udon broth has a great flavor that easily topped the udon I’ve had. Plus, their udon also tasted different from a normal udon. Tempura was fried into perfection and no complaints here. The steak hitsumabushi was top notch too. The beef was really tender and soaking it in tea was beyond delicious!Their grilled mackerel was seasoned with salt. I like it with the dipping sauce since without it, the sea-flavor was strong. Their side dishes like cabbage with yuzu sauce was also good.Great service and environment too. Definitely enjoyed the food here.

Comment: A sleek Japanese restaurant featuring fresh seafood. Upon walking in, you can see a fridge with a variety of sashimi, scallop, and uni for takeout, not a common scene. The lunch set is quite a deal. For under 30 you can have set of soup, salad and a main dish. I tried the Wokuni set whose main dish includes tempura and chirashi. The shrimp in the tempura is huge and flavorful yet the coating was too thick. The sashimi was good for the price but the quality varies depending on the fish. Id say this is a 4.5 star place and a considerable option if you are nearby and want a decent Japanese set - just avoid the tempura LoL.

Comment: Had a very nice experience and the Happy Hour Oysters are a great deal and delicious! They can get very busy and so I would recommend you get a reservation if possible. The food was very well prepared and came in a timely manner. One small draw back is the noise level that may be a tad on the louder side if the place is full. Overall, it has decent pricing for good food in a nice setting.

Comment: We had a great dining experience at Wokuni. The omakase was not what we were expecting, it isnt traditional pieces of sushi. It was a several course meal at the discretion of the chef. Sashimi, appetizer, seafood shabu shabu, dessert. The smoked duck was very memorable. Price is fair.

Comment: Great food, wonderful service, but no sushi rolls during lunch. That struck us as a bit odd.By the way, the decor is really quite nice.

Comment: Great service and great food. They are very accommodating both in regards to dietary restrictions and to preference even when ordering omakase (I have a dairy allergy and they made a custom dessert to accommodate). The service was really what stood out with great and attentive chefs and waitstaff, which is what justified the price.

Comment: I had the regular omakase. Sashimi was pretty fresh, but the presentation was even better. Service was good and ambience was great for a dinner. The interior was pleasantly nice and the food was too. Didnt expect much for this little spot, but definitely would visit again

Comment: My disappointment was short-lived when I realized WOKUNI offered no side of steamed vegetables, then discovered the grilled mushroom and pepper skewers. Wow, did they offer a smokey, charred deliciousness that far exceeded my usual sriracha-smothered side of steamed vegetables. And the sushi was just as good, especially for the price. This fabulous food is served in a hip, open space thats modernly adorned—quintessential Manhattan. But unlike comparable restaurants, the prices are quite reasonable for an overall terrific value.

Comment: To confirm Pete Wells review, the raw fish is the highlight of this party. Inexpensive yet of the highest quality. The other izakaya food was just okay and the staff and ambience is completely off from a traditional Japanese izakaya. Still, this is a great option in the barren midtown east neighborhood.

Comment: Great tapas menu of Japanese food. Split 5 dishes between myself and my boyfriend. It was the right amount for 2. We had edamame, $1 oysters, lamb chops with miso sauce, chicken kabobs, and duck. Little pricy but the food and service were worth it.

Comment: Our server was not overly friendly, but very polite and efficient. He was tall and handsome Japanese guy, more “cool” than friendly. We were well taken care of, we had a great lunch here. The food was high quality, beautifully made, delicious and very satisfying. I would definitely go back for more!

Comment: Amazing fresh fish dish - sashimi sushi cooked fish all excellent. Food go very fast as ingredients quantity is limited, so come early on weekends (weekday the lunch menu is different). Love the two top seat on the side that feels like your little alcove. Wait staff is super accommodating and helpful although I felt they are a bit short staffed on Fri night when I went. Everything on the menu tasted wonderful and fresh and atmosphere is super casual so not like in a sushi restaurant doing omakasei with a chef- you can relax and talk to friends. The bar is very beautiful.will def come back especially when at Grand Central area.

Lunch menu is pretty simple- four choices of lunch set st only $18!When my lunch arrived, it was nicely presented, almost too beautiful to eat. It was fresh, healthy and most importantly tasty. The desserts are s bit pricey but yummy.

Comment: Authentic Japanese restaurant that flies in their bluefin tuna and king yellowtail from Japan. I went for lunch and ordered from a menu of $18 set lunches. The kaisen-don was delicious. While the rice had a little to much vinegar, the dish was very fresh and tasty. The lunch selection is one of the better values in Manhattan. Will come again to try the other selections.
