Comment: Dined in on a weekend night after a concert at Carnegie hall. Didn’t make a reservation but got seated within five minutes. We ordered a few basic yakitori, tacowasa (loved it) and appreciated how they had the Japanese spices (shichimi and sansho). I didn’t appreciate how the staff were stacking up dirty places and glasses right behind our table before bringing it back to the kitchen. Wish that was happening behind the scenes but the restaurant is pretty narrow and tight. They also forgot one of my orders but everyone was friendly. Recommend to get the table in the flexed room

Comment: Food 7/10Pricey but decent yakitori. Some of the skewers were a little salty and oily, but we ordered a wide array of dishes. I enjoyed the smokiness, and their chicken don was good too. Left very full and content.Atmosphere 6/10Very smokey inside, wished their ventilation was better.Service 6/10The took forever to bring up wings and the gizzard sigh.

Comment: Really enjoyed our dinner here - came on a Tuesday night with a reservation, which Id recommend - the place was packed throughout the evening and its not a big venue to start with. We ordered the chicken skin and heart (of course), the pork neck, miso aubergine, shisito peppers stuffed with tsukune, okra with bonito, grilled rice cakes with miso and some other assorted sides. The chicken skin, neck, okra, and stuffed peppers are must-orders in my book. Annoyed we forgot to order the smelt! The cocktail drinks werent anything super special, just fine - so I feel like theres other places you can go before/after if youre inclined. The matcha affogato was a little odd (the matcha is of course quite runny), but the mochi in the dish were wonderful. If youre fancying a sweet treat, my vote goes for the apricot kernel pudding instead - a soft, creamy, pannacotta like option.

Comment: Skewers came out quick. Servers very attentive. Was recommended chef special of chicken knuckles but it was not there when we came. We had salmon crispy rice which was great with the japanese mayo, tofu was also great with the soup base, the wagyu beef was not that tender but tasted ok, the toto pork neck was the best, the eel was ok, and the chicken thigh was average.

Comment: 3.5 / 5.0 - Yakitori Totto used to be one of my favorite Japanese spots in the city, serving authentic Japanese food.During my most recent visit, I was overcharged for a rice ball—only ordered one, but was charged for 2. They’re $5 each, so including tax and tip, that’s $6.50 of overcharge. I only realized after I got home and called the restaurant the next day, but they never picked up. Considering the amount, I never followed up, but it left a poor impression. Still giving 3.5 stars, considering how delicious the food was, although a bit pricey. One of the great things about Yakitori Totto is that you can order a variety of dishes to share. My friend and I ordered:- Kyona Arugula Salad ($15+)- Dashimaki Tamago ($11+)- Gyoza / Dumplings ($10+)- Eringi x2- Momo- Negima- Sasami x2- Yakinasu Dengaku x2- Yakionigiri- Onigiri / Rice Ball*All skewers and rice ball: $5+ eachI would recommend everything except for:- Sasami (unless you like wasabi—no flavor without it)- Yakinasu Dengaku (I love dengaku in general, but the amount of miso paste on the eggplant was overpowering)- Yakionigiri (my friend ordered this and it wasn’t what we’d envisioned)If you’re not a big eater or drinker, this may be enough food for you and you could keep the cost under $100 per person. Drinks were $10 or higher ($10+ for beer, $12+ for plum wine), so you can easily exceed $100 if you have a couple of drinks and more skewers. So it’s not a cheap option, but if you’re looking for a taste of Japan, you can find it here.

Comment: First time coming here after watching the interview between Anderson Cooper and Anthony Bourdain. The grilled meat and vegetables here are PHENOMENAL. Cooked to perfection and affordable. Juicy yet not overly tender. The perfect transfer of flavor of the grill. Don’t pass on the dessert either, the banana pudding and tofu pudding were another level. Service is casual and efficient. Highly recommend.

Comment: One of the best Yakitori in NYC food is excellent, but they give less sauce to yakitori. Beware that you might need to order extra sauce. The price is a bit high. Basic yakitori is $5 per one skewer. Beef was $9. Unagi was $12. Servers are very kind. You need a reservation.

Comment: One of my neighborhood go-tos. Been coming here for over 15 years now, and the quality is still consistently great. For yakitori, it’s one of the the best quality and value there is in NYC. Torishin may be more high end in terms of decor and atmosphere and offer slightly more variety, it is also higher in pricing. So to me, Yakitori Totto comparatively is of good value without sacrificing quality. Order the specials early for they sell out quickly. The extensive selection of yakitori is great, and I personally love the kyona salad, and for lunch, I really enjoy the ramen of all the lunch dishes.

Comment: Yalitori Totto is an absolute gem! This unassuming place on the 2nd floor may have served me the best meal Ive ever had in NYC. Each skewer is meticulously cooked to order by their grill master. Every skewer we had was better than the last! Some standout skewers include: wagyu, chicken skin, tsukune, and garlic cloves. Comment: We were looking for excellent yakitori and found it at Yakitori Totto. Reminiscent of our favorite yakitori spot in Japan (Torikichi in Tsukuba), with a cozy atmosphere and varied menu, I highly recommend anything from the Totto Original list. We especially liked the shishito peppers stuffed with chicken meatballs - those are better than something so simple has any right to be. The atmosphere is cozy and the soundtrack the night we were there was one of the best parts of the experience - a mix of songs from the 80s and 90s that we hadnt heard in a long time and had forgotten how much we loved. If youre already a fan of yakitori, Yakitori Totto is a must-visit. If youre new to yakitori (yaki = fire and tori = chicken meat, so literally grilled chicken), Yakitori Totto has a varied menu that would make for a very accessible first-time experience. They also have a good sake list as well as beer and wine, seemingly something for everyone. We will definitely be back next time were in town.

Comment: Nice restaurant, good food and friendly service. The food is very tasty and seems to be a limited offering. Comment: The yakitori here is OK, and the Karage is a bit dry and be sure to ask for the Mayo! The chicken skin is a bit too stale, there is no significant taste of salt or tare (sauce) for the yakitori. The chicken thigh (momo) is good but also not that juicy. The beer and highball here are also ok but not surprising.Overall, it is still a good choice for Yakiotri Izakaya in the area!

Comment: So delightful! We stopped in on Saturday, while walking around the area. I am SO glad we did! Yakitori Totto has some classic izakaya dishes that you really have trouble finding outside of Japan, and their flavors are very southern Japan (think Osaka area). Their yaki onigiri has shiso flavoring (YUM!) and their menu includes shishamo grilled fish, which is a particular favorite of mine. The staff were very kind and also delightfully acerbic. If you are missing being in Japan, or want a truly authentic experience, just climb the stairs - youll be very glad you did!

The food was just as delicious as I remembered and the staff were fantastic. The atmosphere is amazing and you truly feel transported. The chicken with wasabi was a stand out for me. Other highlights were the mushroom skewers with scallops, the tuna sashimi, the stuffed shishito peppers, and the short rib skewers.I wish I had more pictures of the food but we all devoured it so quickly!I’ll definitely be back again and will not wait another 10 years this time!

Comment: ATMOSPHERE:Small but cozy space with a bar that faces right into the grill area where you can watch the chefs masterfully cooking skewers.FOOD:Rice balls (4.5 out of 5): Eating loads of grilled meats leaves me wanting some rice, but nobody wants a bowl of boring white rice. Instead, these rice balls are grilled to a crispy outside and glazed with a savory sauce. We got both the yakitori sauce and miso sauce, both were delicious, and the miso was the stronger flavor of the two (and a bit saltier).Nasu Mizore Gake - eggplant (5 out of 5): Really soft eggplant with mushrooms and mochi balls in a really umami-filled rich savory broth.Eringi - King oyster mushroom (5 out of 5): I didnt think Id like a mushroom skewer so much, but this was actually one of the best skewers of the night. Very rich in flavor.Shishito peppers (3 out of 5): Very good for shishito peppers, but personally Id choose other options over this.Tori Dango (4.5 out of 5): Tender and flavorful chicken balls.Kalbi (4 out of 5): Good flavor. Ive had kalbi many places before and this skewer was just as expected.Zaru tofu (3.5 out of 5): Very mild flavor of house-made silken tofu, which are meant to be eaten with the bonito flakes and other condiments. Was nice, lite, and refreshing if thats what youre looking for, but for me I typically prefer strong flavors.Matcha Tea Affogato (4.5 out of 5): Nice dessert to top off the evening. Not to sweet, but a nice ice cream that you pour the matcha over to balance out and cut some of the sweetness.

Comment: I am a returning customer who loves this Yakitori place. The food, the service, the decor and atmosphere. Transports me back to travelling days in Tokyo.I havent been back for nearly 2 years and was really looking forward to tonights dinner. It did not let me down however to be critical, i felt the taste of the skewers were a little rushed in grilling with little flavor. Maybe they are rushed with time to keep up with the orders but I felt the quality of the grilling and flavor could be better. More charcoal taste and a little slow grilled char taste would be great.

Comment: Full covid safety in place here-except maybe 6-foot option. tight quartered upstairs yakitori spot. Reminiscent of similar places I’ve seen photos of in Tokyo. Opens at 5:30 and those wanting to eat early or couldn’t get a reservation were lined up outside the front door and down the stairs waiting for them to open. The seating process appeared to be based on how many in your party and how soon the reservations of approximately the same size were scheduled. Those of us arriving at opening were informed of how long we could occupy the table for our meal. One hour no problem for the two of us. Started with our usual choice, edamame, which were done very well with just the right amount of salt. Our yakitori choices were as follows:Negima-Chicken breast with scallions-best of the bunch. Enjoyed 2Bacon wrapped asparagus-also delicious cooked perfectlyNegi Pon-pork with scallions & ponzu-this was very good ordered 3 of theseHarami-skirt steak-light on flavor except beefShitake Mushroom with sea salt-boring. Barely cooked. Needed sauce to enjoyUnagi-eel-just for me as wife won’t eat. Very well executed here.Friendly servers kept up with our desire for more without being intrusive. They know how to keep things moving but not disturb your dining enjoyment. That plus very good food adds up to a place I’d visit again. Recommended.

Comment: I almost dont want to give this place more positive reviews because I dont want anyone else to find out about this small gem in NYC. The food is just perfect. Every bite of it. There are loads and loads of vegetarian and vegan options. The food is always cooked perfectly and it comes out to you within a decent time. Its just small in here. Very small and tight. If you sit at the main bar area where you can see them grilling the food (which I recommend) you will be rubbing elbows with the person next to you.

Comment: Genuinely, the most authentic Japanese experience I have had in the states. Japanese staff, Japanese style of cooking, Japanese service... only caveat are the American prices. My friend and I had lunch, a la carte and chose various yakitori off the menu. We started with Jidori Karaage as an appetizer and continued with Japanese Premium Beef, Teba, Tsukune (in order of satiety). If youre a gluttonous person, then between two people this wont leave you stuffed, but it will leave you feeling satisfied craving just a tad bit more. In my opinion, that is the best way to end a lunch.

Comment: Great place for having one of the best yakitori experience you could ever taste! However, one thing you might want to know is that ‘limited’ menus aren’t always available and you may want to be the first one to arrive to at least get some of the limited parts from the menu. If my memory is correct, the waitress advised me that they bring in their limited parts on Wednesday where you may have the highest chance to get your hands on them!👏

Comment: I arrived at 5:30 PM with a friend and was seated right away, but there was also a long line behind us. This place gets busy and fast. I recommend sitting at the counter in any yakitori establishment. Watching the meats grilled to perfection by the staff is always a sight and will make your mouth water, making everything taste better. The menu offers various choices from chicken knees (tastier than expected) to regular shrimp. Go with what sounds appealing to you. Everything comes off the grill when its at its best taste. Just stay mindful that prices represent one skewer. This place would be five stars if it didnt feel overly expensive to get a meal that fills you without overspending.

Comment: Second floor Yakitori restaurant that’ll make you feel like you’re in Japan. Came here on a Thursday night after seeing Betrayal on Broadway (which side note, was excellent) and sat at the bar area where you could see the chefs grilling the meats. I had the chicken bun, the chicken bowl, and the chicken dango (allot 15 min for cook time). The bun was a good appetizer - the chicken was a tad dry but the bun was very soft. The bowl was filling and I liked mixing the egg with the rice. The rice was super soft and it was a good proportion to the chicken. The service was really nice and I liked how it’s a good spot for solo eating. There were tables in the back of the restaurant too however for bigger groups. They do take credit cards. Note that you need to take the stairs up to the second floor and the restaurant is a bit narrow. Overall a nice place to enjoy a solo meal and eat some grilled meats.

Comment: This is my favorite of favorites in nyc. The stuff I recommend most is the LIMITED category. Normally, you can order only one for each entry in that category for one person. I have tried neck, tail, heart and heart source. I love the heart source and the chicken neck the most. I heard the others in LIMITED are also good. I also like the pork neck and premium beef. Premium beef is a little fatty, I personally taste it with a little wasabi. Not a big fan of his thick beef tongue.I usually ordered the Takana Jako, which is delicious but does not easily make you feel full like eel bowl.

Comment: One of my favorite yakitori places outside of Japan. The selection is generous though limited compared to what you get in the mainland but tasty nevertheless. Prices are reasonable with each skewer going between $3.50 and $8 (if you count things like a single lamb chop as a skewer.) It gets plenty crowded even during the week so come prepared to wait - it is definitely worth the wait. One quick gripe - the plum wine (梅酒) was decidedly worse than expected. There wasnt really a selection and what was available wasnt really anything to write home about.

Comment: We had a great time at Yakitori Totto! I recommend getting a reservation ahead of time, as they dont accept them same day. We waited about 30 minutes for a party of 3 on a Friday - not bad at all for NYC.The hostess, waitress, and staff were all very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The ambiance was great and not too loud. They have seats along the entrance way so you can sit down and wait until youre called. We ordered a bunch of different yakitori and some appetizers. Everything tasted amazing and the service was fairly quick. They have a variety of options, including yakitori with beef, seafood, pork, or vegetables instead of chicken. My favorites were definitely the chicken neck skewers, chicken heart skewers, and the roasted garlic. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the skirt steak skewers was perfectly seasoned. We will definitely come back and/or recommend to friends!

Comment: Pretty good yakitori place on the second floor. This place is pretty small so you may have to wait for a table or spot at the bar. Go early because they have special skewers that run out; for example, the chicken oysters (muscle in the thigh) was amazing but they didnt have it this time I went.I also enjoyed the grilled eggplant dish (under hot appetizers); it had a lot of depth of flavor. The grilled smelt was also flavorful. You can eat the whole thing, bones and all. There was really good roe on the inside.Sake / wine list has some good selections. Comment: The shop is small: maybe space for a dozen people at the counter and perhaps another dozen at tables. As a party of one coming at lunch time, I waited 15 min foot a spot at the counter. Yakitori is one of my favorite Japanese dishes, and this was a great representation of that. You can order sticks dry with salt or wet with sauce. I preferred the sauce in most cases. The atmosphere is totally Yakitori restaurant or Izakaya(Basically both restaurant have quite similar atmosphere in Japan.). I had deep fried eggplant and mochi with soy sauce dashi soup and grated Daikon radish and Nameko mushroom. That was fantastic!! Yes. OMG! All stuffs are super kind and table and seats are clean. My brain got confused like Am I in Japan now? :) I can definitely recommend this restaurant to those who is looking for authentic Japanese food or Japanese restaurant atmosphere. The tables are cozy and close together, so get comfortable with your neighbors conversations. There was a steep set of stairs to climb to get to the restaurant.

Comment: Came around 7pm ~ had to wait 30 minutes for a table. Would recommend the eel on rice, seems to be their signature dish. And if you get the totto salad, I would recommend the green sauce - tastes very refreshing. Kind of on the expensive side though

Comment: Lunch is probably not the best time to judge but felt like it had lost some of its charm. Food wasnt that tremendous although the chicken yakitori was still exceptional as a singular item. The server was impatient even though we didnt take long to decide. They told us they were closing in order to have us leave at just after 2:30.

Comment: I came here for lunch with some coworkers and the food is pretty good. Seats are limited so you do have to get here early to get seats, or else theres a longer wait time. I got different rice bowls to share with my coworkers and theyre good.

Comment: Fabulous Japanese food made on the grill at decent prices. We got there as soon as they opened, but it looks like they also take reservations. Dont expect to walk in unless its early or really late. The place is very popular and always busy.

Comment: We enjoyed everything we tried, but our favorites were the bacon asparagus and the scallion pork. Portions are small.

Comment: This place is amazing. Some of the best food Ive had. But be warned: Every time I arrive, I see many people leave upset simply because they didnt realize the wait. A line forms outside before it opens, and its quite a small restaurant. If you show up on a Friday or Saturday night, you may have to wait an hour or more (Go to the bar across the street if you need to kill some time). They only take a few reservations per night, and you usually have to call ahead a week or two in order to get one.

Comment: Great place for bbq skewers. It gets pricey though when you find that you will need many orders to fill up.

Comment: One the best hidden gems in midtown. Go early, no reservations, so youll be waiting a while. Grab a seat next to the grill. Dark, but quiet in spite of the crowded seating. Excellent grilled items - try the monk fish liver steamed as an appetizer.

Comment: Tucked away on the first floor on an unassuming street this place is small and seems like a hidden secret. Best for couples or very small groups. Bookings are impossible so its first come first serve. Come early or try another day. Space is a little tight but not too bad. Seats surround a grill from which all yakitori will be cooked. The menu is actually extensive but stick to the Yakitori as that is what they do best. Each stick was glazed with a umami filled sauce. This is excellent and hits the spot when you are looking for something a bit different and comforting.

Comment: Had dinner there last night with a friend.Absolutely fantastic. I would never have suspected this little spot would be so good. The place was packed on a Wednesday evening at 8pm but we managed to get a spot at the counter in under five minutes. So many great choices on the menu there is something for everyone. For desert, try the frozen banana. You will NOT be disappointed.

Comment: What a lovely find while on holiday in NY, if you fancy something a bit different this is the place, I really cannot fault it, our waiter shoe (probably the wrong spelling) was excellent, took us through the menu and helped us order every step of the way.Highly recommended.Get lots of small dishes and try as much as possible.

Comment: I am grateful Yakitori Totto is so close to my work so I can go there often. Lunch traffic is definitely much better than the dinner crowd! I really like their BBQ skewers as well as their lunch menu only ramen. You cant go wrong with the cow tongue, bacon with asparagus and pretty much anything! I plan on coming back every week!

Comment: The food here is great. I had a chicken skewer meal and it was delicious; the chicken was cooked just right. A friend had a savory pork dish which I couldnt resist trying. Except for the sign outside luring you in, the place is very easy to miss, and once inside you may feel a bit crammed....And so this brings me to the reason for a 4 star rating as opposed to the 5: We came here during lunch and felt rushed from the onset. We expected mediocre service based on other reviews, and so werent surprised when we explained to the waitress we needed a few more minutes to look at the menu and she simply walked away without even as much as a nod. Despite the poor service, Id still recommend Yakitori Totto for the food alone.

Comment: Best yakitori in the city! Highly recommended. Id suggest making a reservation. They usually only take reservations before 7 pm. Small place. Get their fresh tofu. Their chicken meatball skewer with sauce is delicious.

Comment: This is by far my favorite restaurant in the city. Get there early to get the special chicken parts like the chicken oyster (a rare part of the chicken thigh), and bonchiri (chicken tail). The Asparagus wrapped in bacon and negitoro (pork belly) are some of the best things youll ever put into your mouth. Fantastic service every time I have been there, they are fast, attentive, and always so friendly. A Japanese gem in midtown.

Comment: Do yourself a favor - make a reservation well in advance, eat lightly that day, and show up on time with an open mind. Make sure you get there before 7 or else some of the good stuff will be gone. Some of their skewers arent for the feint hearted. But everything was nicely marinated and juicy. The carafe of hot sake washes everything down nicely. Definitely a place that you will want to come back to over and over again.
